Hi all,
I've recently bought a DEFY. It works quite brilliantly and very fast.
I've noticed that the USB rubber cover of my DEFY is not very firm when closed. There is a little seam between it and the phone body, and the seam grows a bit thicker as it approaches the USB port side. I've included some pics of it.

I've also spilled some water onto it under a water tap. When I opened it I could see some water drops on the edge of the inner side of the rubber closer to the back.
I don't know whether this is normal or defect and I'm not sure whether it will stay up against water which is one of its great and practical feature.
Can anyone compare it with yours? Are all DEFYs like this?

When I close mine I am careful to press it in firmly as otherwise it looks "not quite shut." It has to squeeze in there. I presume this what's suppose to keep water out and as I have dunked my phone countless times without incident. However, if you think yours is twisted or bulging when seated, I don't think that's right.
Mine doesn't have that small hump when in place. I think there is some extra rubber under the clip.

yeah mines got that, you get the bump when the cover gets bent the other way when you move it to get the usb cable in
After charging mine looks like it will stay with the bulge like that when I put the cover back in place, but even so, I can press it firmly, and it actually snaps into place. Sort of even has a clicking sound. I only started noticing this as before I would press it in even, and the bulge would stay there for a while and slowly smooth itself out, but now if I press it in, and then press my thumb/finger all the way around the cover, it snaps into place very tightly.
EDIT - After looking closely at mine I see the hole is actually at an angle, so pressing it in straight would leave it with the bulge. You need to press it against the angle of the phone for it to snap into place.

I did get a slight feel of "snap in". Just dunked it shortly into water, and it still lives!
So I guess it's all right.
I get some moisture around the USB plug hole even when the cover is in place as well. Probably not a big deal. You can try using some grease to improve the seal as well.

One review notes a small amount of "O-ring" sealant or grease around the battery cover rim. I supposed you could add a little. Just don't use vasoline, that's a pertroleum product and will degrade certain types of real and synthetic rubber.
For those that already have the phone, is there any place on the device to attach a wrist strap or lanyard?

yes it has, a lanyard eyelet. mean u can attach a thread there. i have seen it in many youtube vedios and also in gsmarena preview

Yep it's definitely there but it does stop the battery cover from popping back down unless you get it coming back out in exactly the right place.

?? i fitted one to mine, can't see any issue with the back cover!... simply remove cover, slip strap in through the hole in the side above the volume rocker, slip it over the catch/noggin thing, and replace the cover...
are u sure u didnt bring it out through the cover release slit??

my bad, however where do i get a small lanyard from. one for holding round the wrist, not round my neck>?
I know this phone is light but is it light enough to leave hanging around your neck? I haven't done that since I had a phone like a Nokia 8210!

I recently picked up a cheap, generic lanyard for use with the Note and have found that it completely changed the way I hold and use the phone. It makes holding the phone a lot more comfortable and allows for full single hand usage of the phone. Also, I have done some drop tests and it pretty much drop-proofs the phone (linked below is a video of a drop test I did). I HIGHLY recommend getting one of these, if only for the increased flexibility it gives you when using it single-handed.
How it Helps Single-Handed Use
Because the lanyard I got has a clip on it I am able to detach the lanyard part of it and just have a little “tail” of sorts on the phone. I almost always have this tucked between my middle and ring finger when holding the phone, as it allows me to comfortably hold the phone without needed to support it from the bottom of the phone with a finger. It is hard to explain, so I took a video of it (linked below). This manner of holding the phone means that the ONLY part of the hand that needs touch the phone is the middle and ring fingers on the center of the back plate of the phone. The traction from the skin on the back plate keeps it from moving left/right, gravity keeps it from moving up, and the string connecting the bottom of the back plate to the tips of my middle/ring fingers keeps it from falling. It basically feels like the phone is floating in your hand when holding it like this. It allows you not only to comfortably hold it and use your thumb, but use both your thumb and index finger for zooming and panning as well! And, if you tilt the phone in your hand, you can reach ANY part of the screen with your thumb. You can manipulate the phone however you like, by doing this, without fear of dropping it because the string is firmly between the two fingers.

Drop-Proofing
The video shows it the best but you can drop the phone however you want and it will be caught by the lanyard every time. The back plate is fit so securely into the phone that it does not budge, not a single clip of the back plate has come undone in any of my tests (and in one of my tests I flung it around in a circle on the end of the lanyard). Quite amazing really, defeats the need for an OtterBox for me.

Hopefully the linked photo below illustrates it more clearly. I simply tuck the lanyard attachment between my middle and ring finger and it holds the phone.

I too use a lanyard, but have mine attached to the flip case back (also at the speaker hole).
Firmly pulling the flap away from the lanyard, and nothing happens. It's not coming off by accident.
BTW... I have a much smaller lanyard with nice leather detailing. Without ever consciously thinking about it, I have gotten into the havit of leaving the lanyard dangling out of my pocket, and my hand subconsciously goes through the lanyard every time I take the phone out of my pocket.
I plan on using a Nillkin TPU case which has strap holes and an SGP Asturias leather handstrap on my imaginary Note. I say imaginary because it's all just an idea, I might get one, I might not. The dev community is so good for the SGS2 that I'll just miss having so many options and tweaks.

I did this exactly, sturdy at first but I kind of have the feeling that plastic grill will break some day.
Still better than having the whole phone break after a fall tho.
Not having included a proper lanyard hook like in SGS2 was a huge shortcoming for note designers. SGS2 had the con of an unproperly placed lanyard in the top part of the phone, but still!
I'm finding it rather difficult to get my lanyard's string through my speaker phone grill.
It is in fact hard, the typical lanyard end-cords are thicker than the space avaialble in the grill, but if you push attentively enough, or use the help of a tiny object like a de-tipped needle, to push the loop in the middle for you, it is then pretty easy to do the job.

Hmm just remove the back plate first and then tuck it in and out?

My lanyard broke the little bar behind the speaker.
I personally don't think much force was used to make this happen.
It didn't break it off completely, just one side. So I pushed it back in, so that cosmetically it looks ok -but I certainly can't attach a lanyard on it again.
I'll have to find a case/shell with a lanyard loop.
Incidentally, does anyone know if it's possible to get a replacement back panel?

Nillkin has one. They're fairly easy to find on ebay. I think they have multiple colors, or something.
I was uncomfortable on how close the usb connector sat with the S3 installed in the Infuse car dock. You could actually scratch the S3 bezel if you weren't careful inserting the phone into the dock. This is because the bottom of the Infuse is flat and the S3 is rounded, it makes the S3 sit ever so slightly closer to the usb connector. I took apart the dock and lengthen the "channel", trimmed the retention plate, and removed the middle retention clip that holds the rear cover on. End result is it opens up about 1.0-1.5mm more then normal making ample clearance for the S3

How hard was it to remove the sliding part from the rest of the dock? I am planning to take it apart soon (after my microUSB extension cable comes in) but didnt want to try it until I knew the cable worked. It seems like it would just pop off, but I didnt want to apply too much force yet.
I just need the bottom part to maintain charging and audio out. I plan on hiding it under the dash and just using the extension cable.
Appreciate the info.

Getting the back cover off without breaking it is a bit tricky. There aren't any screws at all and is held in by only clips. I used two really small flay head screwdrivers and popped it up using the location of the Infuse speaker hole. I then wedged in a hobby knife it and used it to pry up all the edges until the rear popped off. Once off you'll need a #00 Philips screwdriver to remove the screws holding the retention plate on.
Here are some more pics of the modifications.

Good work, I've taken this apart before on the D710 mount I used previously for my Skyrocket and before I got an Infuse mount for the SIII since everyone was raving about them, but I also noticed that it was a little too close for comfort.... I've just been very careful putting it in, but as much as I drive, it's not something I'll be able to protect every time, so I know what my quick little Sunday project will be today!
I also flipped the Samsung logo around
Feel free to use any of these steps I made for the D710 dock modifications I did in order to get a Skyrocket to fit, it may help others with the disassembly of the back portion in order to get to the screws and the sliders:

I know what you mean...I had to go to the hardware store to buy a #00 screwdriver to get off the screws! I thought about doing exactly what you did, both will work.
happened to get mine moments ago.... anyone care to explain how to get the back part off exactly? I know you said two clips but where do I pry?
-also, how was the Samsung plate turned around? Already modding it, might as well do that!

Clip locations in attached pic.
To flip the Samsung logo around you have to get it off obviously. I used a single sided razor blade to pry it up. Then you have to trim two tabs off the back, you'll know which two when you try to put it back on.

The op mentioned to pry at the headphone jack but I pried it at the rectangle hole (not the usb hole).

yeah, i got that after pulling my head from my @&# and actually trying. Started from the sides and worked around. Not too bad. All I used was razor and screwdriver. Tried the Samsung plate and snapped the razor, lol.
So I just noticed your "dock" part doesn't have any writing on it. Mine says "LOCK" with a triangle showing to slide it up. odd...

haha...waiting for someone to notice that I scratched the front surface trying to pry open the back so I sanded down the front with 2,000 grit sandpaper. I was going to buffing it back to be polished but ended up liking the matte finish. The finish looks better in person than in the pic because a flash was used...the finish sort of matches the Pebble Blue's texture.
any chance of modding it to fit it with a slim case? someone mentioned heat gun in another thread to expand it a little. thoughts?

If I put my thumbs on the screen and my index fingers on each side of the "S" from the Nexus logo and apply a little pressure my phone makes little pop noise like the plastic may be loose. Does anyone else's do this? Could it just be that it is plastic that it makes this noise and there is nothing wrong with the phone?

If you apply pressure to plastic it's going to deform slightly which would cause a noise like that, yes.

Mine does it but only if I hold it a certain way and apply pressure in an exact location. Since I don't do this as I use the phone it's a non issue for me. I'd say if it does it when you hold the phone the way you normally would when using it and it bothers you then return it and try again? Mass produced electronic devices will always have inconsistencies and defects. You'll have to decide whether or not it's acceptable.

mine does that too. I returned it, thinking it may be a factory defect. But it appears that the new one does that too. Just plastic. Once you put that in a case, you wont' hear clicking
I fixed the clicking sound by applying a strip of insulation tape on the inside of the back cover. Be careful though, just apply one layer, two are too much and lead to a gap between fingerprint sensor and back cover.
For me the clicking sound almost disappeared after 2-3 weeks.

Good tip! This made me realize that it's easier to fix rather then go back to the store and return it for a new one (which probably will have the same issue). It look quite easy to remove the back cover in order to mount the tape, even though I'm not that inspired to dissemble a newly brought product. Did you mount the tape's sticky side against the inside of the back cover? Or did you mount it against the battery? I'm not sure it matters.

I mounted it against the back cover. But i guess it does not matter, as you only need to close the gap between battery and back cover, so there is no more space for the back cover to move.

Tried this and moved the tape several times but I realized that the squeaking and clicking sounds kept on coming back. So I cleared it for tape and sent it in for repair. It turned out that my main issue was just at the fingerprint sensor where the plastic back cover were to tight on to the right side of the metal ring around the sensor. Couldn't get rid of it after all, but it sure was a nice try! it might be a solution to other units depending on where the noise is generated.
