Just wondering if you guys can tell me what's the best method of rooting my phone with hardware 003 Hboot 2.10 ? Sprint sent me a refurbished phone because my other EVO died.
Unrevoked, I think it works for all evos. Google it or search xda. I can't post the link
We're comin from a pure power source.
Search feature ftw...Anyway as of today, EVERY Evo can be rooted with unrevoked 3 don't let anyone tell you otherwise
The last time I tried unrevoked I got a error saying something was missing and didn't work. I'll download and give a try again, Thanks for the responses

Just follow those instructions, and you'll be good. Just be sure to have the hboot drivers installed correctly.
I used unrevoked, worked great for me. I'm new to flashing roms and it was easy. Just google it and download it from their site. Happy rooting!

Hmm. So you installed the hboot drivers successfully? You have USB Debugging checked, right? There are a number of things that can interfere with the Unrevoked process, such as HTC Sync, Anti Virus Programs, PDAnet, doubletwist, etc etc. Basically, you want to be sure that there are no programs running that can communicate with your phone or interfere with it when it's plugged in, other than the Unrevoked program. Be sure all other things are disabled. Also, which version of Unrevoked are you using? Just to be sure, it's the newest one, correct? Version 3.32, right? ( http://downloads.unrevoked.com/recovery/3.32/reflash_package.exe ) Once you've confirmed all of those things, try running Unrevoked a second time, and see if you have success. I've used unrevoked a number of times, and it's succeeded for me every time, it should definitely work.
Edit: And I just double checked the links in the thread I linked you to earlier, and the download links are current and up to date. So if you downloaded from that link, then you are on the current Unrevoked version of 3.32. So that answers that question. I would temporarily disable your anti virus, be sure that no other programs that can interfere are running, and try running Unrevoked again.
~~~ HTC EVO - Universal Auto Root ~~~ v2.4 (works with all US EVOs)(3/12/11)
I believe autoroot works with ALL evos. I've used it to flash several evos flawlessly. Make sure you have htc sync and the android SDK installed before you do to ensure you have all the necessary drivers.
I was using z4root. I stupidly installed the OTA. I've got GingerBreak running now. I'm not optimistic. It's been cranking for almost 10 minutes. I checked the bootloader, and I'm S-OFF. USB-debugging is on. Fingers crossed.
No dice. Ran for 20 minutes. Closed and never rebooted. I rebooted it myself. No superuser app. No root. Guess we continue to wait.
if im not mistaken u said u s-off? just put a RA pc36img.zip on ur sdcard n update from bootloader. i read that in another post. then u can install another rom.
that is correct. that'll get u a recovery. then just flash a rom.
but does gingerbreak give temp root? if it does, a root method should be easy enough to create.
If you're S off dude, as the other guys told ya, all you need to do is flash a recovery image. Once you flash recovery, you can then flash a rom of your choice. You don't need to wait for anything. as fast as you can download the recovery image is as long as you need to wait! Put a PC36IMG of Amon RA 2.3 on your sd card, then boot to the bootloader. Accept the update. Then choose to boot to recovery. Good luck
EDIT: The pc36img.zip that's attatched is Amon Ra V2.3 recovery.
Can someone point us to a gingerbreak app we can try? All I've found are the compile files.
Whoops, I just checked the bootloader again, and it says "SUPERSONIC EVT3 SHIP S-ON" at the top, so I guess I'm S-ON. Could have sworn it said S-OFF last time I checked.
Nope, nothing you can. You just accidentally screwed yourself. Gingerbreak won't work. You don't think it was tried? The exploit that was used was patched days before HTC released our 2.3.3 update. Coincidence?
I'm trying to unroot my phone. I downloaded the correct the RUU for my hboot version and download s-on tool. When I go to flash the s-on tool, I get the error that says "unsupported radio version." Any ideas? I need to unroot this guys Evo ASAP!!!
Damn. No help???
make sure there are no other images that might be blocking this. or simply re-download and try again if you are sure there are no other files that bootloader might be looking at.
Maybe try to downgrade the radios first? Just a thought. I don't really know.
Had to do it the long way. Run a RUU through hboot, then 2.3 software update to lock the hboot to s-on. Omg!!!
okay, first off im gonna start out saying i am a samsung user and know nothing about htc. my buddy got an evo 4g for free and he wants me to root and install a rom, so i figured out i need s-on but have no idea how to do it. i tried the revolutionary thing but i entered the beta code and it always says invalid. please help! how do i do this?
Check your Hboot version first, if you haven't already done so. You can check the version by going into the bootloader (volume down+power). If it's 2.18 you'll have to use the Htcdev method to unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery and root the phone. Revolutionary won't work with the newest Hboot. Incidentally, you don't have to have S-OFF to install a ROM or flash kernels, for that matter. So long as the bootloader is unlocked and the phone is rooted with a custom recovery, you're good to go.
Okay, dumb question. When you entered the serial number of the phone to get the key, did you make sure you didn't use O for 0 (zero)? Not sure that could be part of the issue but worth looking at. I honestly can't think of anything else at this point. I remember when Revolutionary first came out last year, people were having a lot of issues with getting the beta key accepted. I for one didn't have this issue so I'm at a loss at this point.
ok so i check for the boot loader version then what? i then install a custom made one from my computer? then i make a backup onto my sd card or comp? i have titanium but it says i need to be rooted...also...when do i instal the kernal? and where the heck do i find this stuff?:banghead:
HTC EVO 4G PC36100 ~ XDA Premium
If I recall correctly, there is a su binary file that you have to flash from recovery once you've run Revolutionary. It's a zip file that's in the Revolutionary guide. Running the su binary is what actually gives you root. You'll need to make sure that you have the app Superuser or SuperSU installed, as it will actually give permission for root apps (such as Titanium Backup) to operate. As far as kernels and such, look under the development section there, as there is a ton of great info there
Also, once you get rooted, I'd suggest going into Recovery and making a full Nandroid backup, especially if you plan on flashing a ROM or kernel. It'll come in handy if you get in a tight spot down the road.
HI everyone, I need some help. My micro USB port went on my phone and VW sent me a replacement. I used the tacoroot temp root methond and the Revolutionary to gain s- off and flashed the newest radio etc. All seemed fine. Fastboot screen say S- off and shows newest radio, I thought great! time to root. Nope..here is what I get:
first of all I have to use adb shell to boot the phone into Revolutionary/CWM recovery. It will not let me do it by holding the power and vol down button.
second when I go into recovery and pick a rom to flash I get this error: E:Can't open /sdcard/xxxx_ rom.zip.
makes no sense to me. Any Ideas?
You didn't receive any errors when using revolutionary? When you boot up your ROM go into settings and look under the power option and make sure fast boot is disabled.
I would go through the whole process again. It sounds like something went wrong in rooting.
