[N2E][1.1] TouchNooter 2.1.31

This Nooter is officially supported by The Nooter Project for Nook Simple Touch
I'm not adding certain things because I don't believe they should be available as part of a rooting kit designed to give users more control of their devices. Things such as additional readers or CPU Clocks are up to the user to install themselves and needlessly putting them in Nooter creates app bloat that a user may or may not want. You can always drop Apps you want into \nooter\data\app and they will install automatically when you root the device. This Nooter is designed with the sole purpose of opening up the possibilities of the device by giving users Root, Google Apps, and other Apps which make the device more usable as an android device than just an e-reader.
What it does:
Enables ADB via uRamdisk
Installs adbWireless
Installs Button Savior
Installs NookTouch Tools
Installs Amazon Marketplace
Installs su and Superuser.apk
Installs ADW + E-ink Friendly Theme
Installs Busybox & Busybox Installer/Uninstaller
Installs Gapps (Gmail, Market, Youtube, Others)
Installs NookColor Tools (To Enable Non-Market Installs)
System Files that get Modified:
/system/build.prop - Enabling Google Check In
packages.xml - Allows Gapps to install properly.
framework.jar - Should allow a proper Android ID to generate.
Changes:
January 26, 2012 -
Tested Fix: ADW not installing - Caused by spaces in ADW's Filename in 2.1.26
Added: Amazon Marketplace, Opera Mini
January 26, 2012 -
Added: adbWireless, SuperManager (Root File Manager, APK Manager, other useful tools), Busybox Installer/Uninstaller
Untested Fix: Market 1 Day wait
Updated: busybox, ButtonSavior.apk, su & SuperUser.apk
November 20, 2011 -
Removed: GoLauncher, LiveWallPaper Picker, maybe some other stuff.
Added: New Market, ADW with Black Minimalist Theme, NookTouchTools.
New: Rooting Image
June 24, 2011 -
Removed: Multitouch Permission
Added: Modified framework.jar
June 22, 2011 - Fixed: Script not running at boot.
June 20, 2011 - Initial Release
Before you begin:
You must already have a registered Nook Simple Touch
You must have a Gmail/Youtube linked Account. IF you used a Gmail account for B&N Registration you should use that one for this process.
You must either have dd (Linux) or WinImage (Windows) software.
You must have an external microSDCard reader or this will not work. Using the Nook Simple Touch can result in it becoming unusable (bricked).
You must have enough intelligence to follow instructions.
Let's get started:
Download TouchNooter from here: touchnooter-2-1-31.zip - Uploaded
Linux: Unzip and use dd if=touchnooter-xx-xx-xx.img of=/dev/sdcard (where xx-xx-xx is the version number)
Windows: Unzip and use WinImage to "Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image" to your SDcard.
Windows Alternative: https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download
If you wish to use Underclocking follow these steps
Download Underclock.zip from uploaded attachments
Unzip it and place the data folder in /nooter/
Check that the com.antutu.CpuMasterFree folder is in the /nooter/data/data folder
Check that com.antutu.CpuMasterFree.apk is in /nooter/data/app
Power off your Nook Simple Touch.
Insert TouchNooter SDcard into your Nook Simple Touch.
Power on your Nook Simple Touch.
You should see the new TouchNooter boot screen, follow all instructions.
That was the hard part, now to the simple stuff.
Upon boot unlock your screen.
At the Android Welcome Screen skip Sign In.
Enable Location Services when given the option.
Connect to Wifi and launch Youtube from ADW's App Drawer (Or the App Drawer of your Choice).
Click the Menu button (The right one in the middle of the status bar).
Select "My Channel" and Login using your Gmail Account.
Exit Youtube and Launch Gmail from ADW's App Drawer.
Sync your Gmail Account and Exit. (If it fails to sync that is fine.)
At this time Market fails and you must wait up to a day. Just check it every so often. Future updates should fix this.
Open up Market and Accept Terms and Service.
If you made it this far your nook should be successfully Rooted. Go Download an App to make sure.
Enable Non-Market Installs by running the NookColor Tools App.
If your Youtube fails to launch Uninstall and Reinstall Youtube from /data/app
Go to Settings > Device Info > SdCard > UnMount > Format

Works great
Hi
It works great, thanks.
Beside the full GApps do you know if there's a way today to get the Market working on a firmware 1.1 with TouchNooter 1.11.11 ?

Go through all the steps manually with something like noogie. The reason TouchNooter can't do it is because to get the script to run requires the the system to boot, replacing the files while the system is active will cause the system to crash when you go to reboot it to complete the steps for Market. Because of this to install Gapps you have to use a method that doesn't require the system to be active like Noogie.
Another method which would allow us to add Gapps, is if someone completed a version of CWM for Nook Touch.
Dear Gabriel,
somehow i gained working market on my Nook with 1.1. I used the older touchnooter with subplanted framework.jar and uRamdisk (wifi one). Then i've done all steps as in guide. Market however didn't saw any applications. I removed youtube app, and it started working! Then updated market to that one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15084704&postcount=51 using adb.
"adb install -r Vending.apk"
And right now i'm cool.
I've done the root for 1.1 manually, and it was a bit of a pain, so everybody should be thanking Gabrial here for streamlining the process a bit and not having to hunt down all the elements necessary to make a rooted Nook useful. (It's not actually difficult, but nobody has centralized *all* of the info even if much of it can be found in the Knowledge Base thread, including e.g. that you need Busybox even for something as simple as the cp command.)
domi.nos-
Is the -r switch for reinstallations any different than removing the old Vending.apk and then installing the new one? I still have not got market 100%; search won't work. Is it working for you? It's not really that big a deal because I only need a few apps but all the same it'd be nice...
Is it necessary to revert to original Nook ROM (the backup I've made before rooting the Nook Touch)?
No as a see it does not search. ;/ But in my opinion it is more important to find out why did my nook (any everyone elses' as i presume) disappear from pc market website.
But as i remember in the previous 1.01 software market couldn't do true way of searching, it was only showing most used searches.
This may sound dump, but I don't have a lot of knowledge with android yet.
This root is without any google apps, Can I download the google apps apks and install them on my device?
Dark_hawk,
From what I read from Gabrial, the only way to install Gapps if when nook is booting, and there is no safe way as from now. I'm still checking, though.
My experience so far? 1.1, touchnootered with 1.11.11, backup recovered with titanium backup pro (which worked quite well, I might add), and besides market, everything else is working?
I'm looking for info on how to install Gapps, or market at least, but no luck yet. Gabrial mentioned something about using noogie, but I don't even know where to look for Gapps version that may work on Nook STR>

How can I install Side-loaded APK?
I think, its dumb NB question... but I can not figure out, how I can install side-loaded APKs... I copied APKs to Nook but just not find a way to install them on nook... Is this something simple ? or not that simple as I think?
WORKS WITH 1.1.0 and gapps!

The Easy method above worked perfectly with my new nook running 1.1.0.
all I would add is that I got search working in the market by toggling "allow non market apps" in Nook Tools app, then installing the vending.apk file from my sd card with ES file explorer as an application. just select yes when it asks you to replace system app.
To get ES file explorer to begin with, I scrolled thru the whole list of top free apps, which took awhile.
Apps that I was able to install and work:
ES file explorer, Facebook, Google reader, Google voice, XDA app, Opera mobile, Opera mini, Google+, Quickpic and Paint easy.
Thanks to everyone for all the hard work that made it easy for a N00b like me to root and customize my NST!

+1 It seems ES File Explorer is not installed!
Well, I followed the recipe:
- Restored
- Resetted
- Updated to 1.1.0
- Touchnootered with 1.6.24 and framework and uramdisk for 1.1.0
- Three locked boots (at least 5 minutes each)
- When tried without SD, got back to regular nook!!!!
I did register, though, after reset. Would that make a difference???
Gotta try.
I've tried to install ESFile Explorer through browser but with no results. Besides, browser crashes when, for instance, I try to write something on google.
One way to side-load apk's

The way I did it was to copy apk's to my SD card, then download a file explorer/manager app from the market (my personal favorite is ES file explorer), which allows you to view the contents of your SD card, and select apk's to install.

It sounds like you did it the exact same way I did. Just to make sure did you delete the old Framework and uramdisk files, then copy/rename their replacements to match the original files? i.e. framework.jar and uRamdisk

I think the easiest way to get it would be from the market. if you haven't updated the vending.apk file to fix searching the market then you would have to use the category buttons at the top of the market to browse for it and install it.
Yes, I deleted the old version, installed uRamdisk usb 1.1 and framework 1.1.jar and renamed them properly (same name as erased files).
Did it all over again, no registering, and same result: after running for 3 times, went back to regular nook STR!!!
Forget about the restart the process three times, do it like this:
1) Use nookRestore to restore /system.
2) Erase and Deregistered to wipe /data
(If it dosnt let you, force it shutting down your nook, then starting it up, and when the screen flickers press right and left bottom buttons, hold for 5+ seconds).
3) Register, or not, as you preffer.
4) Apply 1.1 firmware update.
5) Open the TouchNooter 1.6.24 image and inside the nooter folder, search and substitude the uRamdisk for this one http://www.multiupload.com/CJ981FWPJG
and framework.jar for this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19201466&postcount=352.
6) Use the new TouchNooter 1.6.24 to root your device. Follow the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132693
If it dosnt work, try again until it works.
7) Continue with registering: Youtube (401 error) --> GMail --> Market.
8) Download adb, and unzip it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124160&page=6
download this vending apk:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124160&page=6
and sqlite3:
http://www.sqlite.org/sqlite-shell-win32-x86-3070900.zip
copy the apk and sqlite3 tothefolderyouunzippedadb/platform-tools , open cmd and then:
cd tothefolderyouunzippedadb/platform-tools
adb connect yournooktouchip
Now we are going to enable non market apps use my method, or what madmachinist said:
adb shell
mount -o rw,remount -t ext2 /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /system
adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db settings.db
sqlite3 settings.db "update secure set value=1 where name='install_non_market_apps';"
adb push settings.db /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
adb reboot
now when NST reboots:
cd tothefolderyouunzippedadb/platform-tools
adb connect yournooktouchip
adb install Vending.apk
adb reboot
You are done, everything should work now.

Just put in your email address, create a password, and when you click on the image verification box, just put in the number you see. They'll send an email to your address to verify it, then you can download the files.
edit: I've uploaded them to mediafire. Note - I HAVE NOT TESTED THESE YET, just put them up to make it easier for people here to download.
mediafire.com/?c42owizzedrkted

very nice!
This TOTALLY WORKS. Just did it on my Defy+ (tmobile - UK). It didn't boot after the first rom was flashed, but I just removed the battery when RSD said it was complete, and reinstalled it holding the up button to get into the bootloader. Flashed the 2nd rom, and I'm up and running. Installed Adfree to test it, and it worked perfectly. VERY happy with this. I want to go to the nearest Motorola office and wave it around
Edit: Update - I've installed Adfree, and RootBrowser, both requested superuser permissions and were granted them ok after hitting ok. I've tested the file access by deleting the default camera click ogg file, and that worked fine. Also used ESFileExplorer to backup and remove the bloatware that Motorola adds on (Media Share etc). Phone is VERY quick now.

[Q] Voodoo OTA will not give check in final "Protected copy available" box

As the subject states: Cannot get the final box (Protected su copy available) checked on Voodoo OTA RootKeeper (ver 2.0.3 - Most current available on Play Store). I have searched high and low for answers on this both on this site, as well as around the web. Lots of talk on Voodoo, but nothing on confirming protected copy exists.
I'm including a screenshot of Voodoo being granted Superuser rights and another shot of the message I get when I press "Protect root". While it does say "root su protected", the box does not check and I'm not given either options to "Delete su backup" or "Temp. un-root (keeps backup)".
I've rooted my Asus TF300T and Voodoo was seamless, including giving me a protected copy and the option to temporarily un-root. I've also Rooted several friends' tablets with the same success, so I'm familiar with the process. But I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what went wrong (or what I most certainly could have done wrong) here.
Here are the following steps I took to root this Iconia A100:
I used ZeroNull's "Full Root...Simple Method" listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531646
I followed every instruction to the letter. I installed my paid copies of Supersu, Superuser and Titanium Backup, and ran them. Then I installed Voodoo OTA and ran the app. It went through it's process and checked each box....except the last.
If there's anyone here that can help, I owe you a case of cold ones. If I've posted in the wrong forums, I apologize...I read the rules and to the best of my knowledge I'm posting in the right place.
Android Version is 4.0.3
Kernel is 2.6.39.4+
Again, I sincerely appreciate any assistance anyone can provide here. This site has been a lifesaver for me so many times; I'd be lost without it.
Thank you for your time.
Fuzy
My A500 was acting the same way. I used an app called A500 Remount and after tapping the /system that was displayed and going back to Voodoo OTA it gave me a check mark in the Protected copy available plus the boxes for "Delete su backup" and "Temp. un-root" after tapping "protect root"

Same here. Couldn't find a way to install Play Store yet >_<
The only way for now, is either to wait for a miracle on a root method on the tablet, or wait for the official international release for their ROM.
My N1 is back into its box, as it's pretty much useless now, since over 80% of the apps these days requires Google Service Framework.
It's fine to be a MP4 player now.Install MX player, some comics reader, and some China online games. Hope official GSF come out asap.

I tried several times also. I noticed the model at GMC was had the chinese version info on the back of the device but was running Play Store. Tried a few versions but it exited after a breif pinwheel. The N1 device is listed on googles accepted device list pdf with no specific model information. Maybe the next version of Play store ? IDK how it works. Anyway device is not useless for me - I found most apps I require on Amazon Store or APKs. The Nokia zlaunch is excellent and waking up with screen double touch I like also. I owned apple ipad mini and prefer the build of this. Feels very sturdy - well built.

I also got my N1 yesterday. I tried to install the Play Store, yet no success. I also tried the method used to install it on Xiaomi devices, but the offered Play Store there is not compatible with 5.0 (permission READ_LOGS seems to be required, thus the apps crash)
I thought also about flashing the PA Gapps via the "stock" recovery. I tried following:
- Put gapps zip in /mnt/sdcard/ and renamed it to update.zip
- reboot into recovery using adb (adb works fine so far)
I hoped that the recovery would flash the zip as an update, but the error screen appeared. Knows somebody if the zip name and location are correct?

I think the GAPPS zip file is not signed officially. Unless 3rd party recovery is installed, the un-signed gapps is no way to get into N1.
How did you get adb working? It doesnt seem to work for me with the Google USB drivers
EDIT: Nvm I figured it out, I needed to manually install the Google USB driver

Has anyone of you checked if fastboot is available? Is the bootloader finally locked or not?

Okay, so I am far from an expert, here's what I found:
1. You can boot into fastboot by pressing power + vol. down when the device is off. See the attachment how it looks. I've tried a few oem commands: fastboot oem unlock, fastboot oem ?, fastboot oem command list, they don't work.
2. AFAIK there is no root method. I've tried Kingo root, others tried Root Genius, both fail to root it. Looking at chinese forums with Google translate looks like they're waiting for an international ROM with Google stuff to flash.
3. You can install Google play services. It will just crash each time something tries to use it. I've made a sample app that tries to use it, I see these exceptions in Logcat:
Code:
java.lang.SecurityException: attempting to read gservices without permission: Neither user 10060 nor current process has com.google.android.providers.gsf.permission.READ_GSERVICES.
java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to start activity ComponentInfo{com.google.android.gms/com.google.android.gms.app.settings.GoogleSettingsActivity}: java.lang.SecurityException: caller uid 10060 lacks any of android.permission.INTERACT_ACROSS_USERS
java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to create service com.google.android.gms.gcm.GcmService: java.lang.SecurityException: attempting to read gservices without permission: Neither user 10060 nor current process has com.google.android.providers.gsf.permission.READ_GSERVICES.
If you are interested in anything else I can try it (unless its some dangerous stuff)
Thanks syddd,
As you say i would not flash anything. I'm not an expert either.
In other ocassions a command useful to me was to boot (not flash) into custom recovery. For recovery I would try one working on similar hardware ... And from there, install superuser to root. If it is simply a clean android, that should do it.
As I said previously on other posts, I will start doing this works on mine once I got one by mid-april.
Remember, It is always important to backup current status!
As I first step I will test something like it appears on this guide for the nexus 7:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2415668
Adapting things to similar hardware ...
Trying fastboot boot with custom recovery to know if the device is locked. If it is it should not allow this operation.
Something like method 1 in this other guide

Thanks for the guide!
I tried to follow the clockworkmod recovery one, but could not dump the boot partition. I am thinking of extracting it from the official ROM, I just dont know where those are... We could find out by snooping on the connection while the device gets a new update.
EDIT: Also "fastboot boot test.img" results in:
C:\>fastboot boot test.img
creating boot image...
creating boot image - 2048 bytes
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 2.521s]
BUT the device does not reboot and I see the following for a split second:
"boot command stubbed in this platform!"
where test.img is just an emty file. Does this mean that the boolloader is locked?
EDIT2: I've managed to get 2 update files by clicking the "check for update" button and snooping with Wireshark what happens. It makes a POST request to http://www.fc811.com/OTA/GetOTAFirm...&fw_id=A5CN30B&serial_no=XXXXXXXX&version=1.0 , where serial_no is the serial of your device (found in the about menu) and fw_id is your current firmware. I could download 2 firmwares with this method A5CN30B and A5CN315B. Both are minor updates, if someone has the fw version from the initial release it would be useful because we could get the 5.0.2 update.
I've put these in my dropbox: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9186429/nokia_n1/A5CN30B_update.zip https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9186429/nokia_n1/A5CN315_update.zip
Both have a droidboot.img file inside them, which is a RAMdisk boot image.
Really really nice advances!!
Thanks! You`ve been able to download I think a valid ROM for the device! Now it should be explored ...
And yes, I suppose the boot is locked which means it will not be easy to make changes.
We will need more expert hands to guide on what's next ...
In my opinion I would try to open the Image you have downloaded.
I've opened it, as you can see they are simple .zip files. But they are not ROMs. Part of them are Android patchfiles which contain just binary diffs. The bootloader is a RAMDisk which can be opened and patched with the methods you linked. The big question is whether they can be installed or not.
EDIT: see my other post, one of the older updates contains a full system image
I've been using for about 2 months. And had it repaired once, 'coz of screen issues. They sent me a new one. Very nice! Just the color changed from silver, originally, to grey, otherwise is fine.
The battery is good. It could last longer, if very much, when compared with N7.2013.LTE. The new Intel Atom looks very promising. But as you all know, there's no google play store. So I left it sleeping in the drawer.
New Play Store APK available. Just in case can anyone test it on the device?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996995
Hope it now works ...
It does not work.
It installs normally, but closes when I open it, just like previous versions. The problem is that play store/Google play services need some special permissions that need root. So no root = no play store.
Just need to wait for the international ROM to leak for this thing. The problem is Nokia is taking it's sweet time to release this thing anywhere else....

Very helpfull post. I was very much helped from your post. i use the items described in "how to optimize LOLLIPOP". For me it was very good someone to let me know wich app to be safely removed and wich can be freezed so the phone can work faster but without problems, so thank you for that list.
Second, 3C Toobox that you suggest is very powerfull as i saw and does alot of thinks others dont.
The App you are suggesting( Google, camera, FB, MX player) i have to report this
YOUTUBE, MX, GOOGLE CAMERA very easy downloaded and istalled and as you say they are very nice too.
Chrome and FB, allthough downloaded, was not able to install. Chrome cause the phone to reboot and nothing was installed. FB run the process succefully no in the end it says' app was not installed"
for Google keybord and Instagram downloading link is not working.
But all the other thing work out and i think my phone is in better contition now. For all your knowledges and efford to share it with us i would like to thenk you very much

All the links workin properly !
Don't use Adblocker on these sites
Remove chrome updates and do "clear data " and try links (if it does work remove entire chrome by 3C tool and install new version normally (not recommended !!! you may lose connection checking ability ) )
For FB I think there s no enough DPI but you can try.
For Google keyboard and Instagram try new links

yes i just check out and all links are working as mention above.
With adblocker disabled, there is no problem in the links. FB is actually DPI problem
Finally it's here! I'm waiting for this for one year. I will give you my feedback in the next week.

i 've been busy(tax season in my work) so i was not able to respond so far, but i wiil do so in next two days, i promise....
my comments about suggestions you made
As i have posted before, you have done a very good work, collecting all these tips and trick that really make our phone to work more smooth and fast. I followed all your suggestion and these are my observetions.
When i unistalled and freese all the apps and services you are suggesting, I noticed that the tablet is working 15-20% faster than before, so this is the first + for your project!
downloaded and tried to install all that you suggest. All are working very well except:
FB is not installing at all no matter what you do.( uninstall, clear data, reinstall it, etc)
Chrome i was not able to install x86, so i downloaded from Play and install new version. I am not fun of Chrome and for once again a realized how heavy load is this browser, i cant see why people are using it. XDA start page did 3 minutes to load, since Mozilla 10 seconds. Any way this is personal opinion .......
Instagramm cause me black screen on phone in the end of installation. I had to hold down power so the phone closes and restarting it. When came back Instagram is working very well !!!!
So the main problems are FB and Chrome for me.
I am using an APP I found here in XDA that compines FB - messenger -Twitter in on screen without heavy load phone you can give it a try if you want. The name is Slidechat and you can take it from Play for free
[APP][4.0+][v2.0]Slidechat http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-slidechat-t3382662
I hope i helped someone with these thought of mine.
The big value though are to ADBLOCKER effords who collected and tested all these things for us to find ready.
THANKS MATE @adblocker !!!!
thanks a lot for the guide, I'm trying to follow your instructions to root the device, but in the first step
(fastboot flash fastboot fastboot.img) the only thing I get is a message
<waiting for device>
and nothing happens
when I start the device normally and connect it to PC it is detected fine and nothing is wrong.
any ideas?
