Hi,
I'm going to the states soon and wonder if I can just walk into a store and buy a prepaid SIM card that will work with my GSM TP2.
Or do I need "special" CDMA cards?
All I want is to have a number for emergencies, etc..
Thanks in advance!

If you have a GSM Rhodium, then you'll need to get a SIM from a GSM carrier here. AT&T and T-Mobile are the top two GSM carriers here. CDMA carriers do not offer SIM cards to anyone except for their own customers going overseas as far as I know. As long as your device is SIM unlocked, then yes, you can just put any SIM card in it, and it will work.
3G coverage will be based on your device model. European Rhodium models will not get US 3G service. AT&T 3G services work on the 850 & 1900 UMTS bands. T-Mobile 3G is on the 1700 & 2100 UMTS bands. The device needs both to work properly on one carrier's 3G service.

Will this phone have dual CDMA and GSM support?
I've read it will. Click the link below.

If so, I wonder if we purchased a Sprint one, could we unlock it and use it on a GSM Carrier like AT&T. This is a hypothetical question.
If it supports GSM, does this mean it would HAVE to support SIM cards?

No, because the GSM radio only supports international frequencies (not 1900). The purpose is for you to roam or use GSM networks overseas not in the U.S.
Example, i want to go visit my sister in the U.K. I land at Heathrow, buy a prepaid SIM from say O2 and pop it in the TP2. If i'm back in the States, i use Sprint's CDMA network.
The Sprint version is being advertised as an international phone, and comes with a Sprint SIM card pre-installed, and what appears to be a security strap, making it difficult to remove.
Before traveling internationally, you can call Sprint ahead of time to have them active their SIM card, and for the low low price of $1.99/minute, you can use overseas GSM networks to make phone calls, and in many cases, data access.
Of course I'd like to buy a pay-as-you-go SIM card and install that for much more reasonable rates while overseas, but I'm not sure if it's as simple as plugging in a different SIM card.
I had read that the Rogers version of the phone required...something to active the SIM slot, and even then seemed not to work for data via 3G.
Anybody else have the Sprint version? Played with GSM yet?
I'm a little apprehensive to start tearing into it to remove their SIM card just yet...
The GSM is 2G only, no 3G.
Well my buddy has a AT&T sim card that i put in my TP2 but it did not work. I switch the phone to GSM only but it did not pick up a network. I also put that sprint sim on his phone but it had no network either. According to the manual its lock from going to a gsm network on the USA.

Hopefully a custom ROM can unlock the ability to use GSM networks in the United States!

good to know.
I read in the manual that it was not usable on US GSM networks too, but I assumed that was because they never intended for you to remove the Sprint SIM card, so of course the Sprint SIM card wouldn't work domestically.
So it seems the Sprint phone can be unlocked for GSM just like the Telus phones, but I haven't read of any success getting GSM 3G to work w/ an unlock code.

d'oh, missed this....
What about EDGE?
Check the specs, if it said gsm 850,1900 it should be able to use with in the US. Just have to sim unlock it first in order to use.

EDGE is 2G
Many of the ROMs here are listed as GSM or WWE. However, elsewhere it is stated that this won't work on Sprint. I have a tp2 from sprint, and it is a quadband phone, and accepts sim cards and operates on CDMA. So will this work with WWE ROMs or will it not? Is CDMA precluded to just verizon roms?
WWE is just world wide english, the launguage of the rom. GSM vs CDMA is what you need to pay attention to.
Just from memory, but a quick google would show more...
GSM: AT&T, TMobile
CDMA: Verizon, Sprint
Obviously there are more carriers, but that should get ya going.
Right, but my TF2 is a quad band phone which appears to work on GSM and CDMA. I don't understand why it is one versus another and not both. Or does CDMA now mean sim cards?
Why it is one versus the other and not both? Because this world is not created equal.
Quadbands/2G are not the same as 3G networks. GSM and CDMA have been mutually exclusive and are not interchangeable. Before 3G, when I travelled to US/Can, I could only roam to GSM supported networks (which had very limited coverage at the time), e.g., Fido in Canada. The situation is worse if visiting to Japan - no roaming if you are on 2G network exclusively to this day.

I have an HTC TouchPro 2 that I bought from T-Mobile here in the US. While I now have an account with T-Mobile, I was able to get this with no contractual committment. I also happen to have an AT&T Fuze with an account at AT&T. Originally, I wanted to move my cell service to T-Mobile, as I can get the same service for about $30-$40 less per month from T-Mobile than I pay AT&T. However, I have discovered that T-Mobile does not have nearly the data network speed that AT&T does. I can get 3G from T-Mobile, but not nearly as widely as I can with my AT&T phone and service. Consequently, I would like to convert the phone to AT&T. I have unlocked the phone, and upon moving the SIM card from the Fuze to the TP2 I can make AT&T calls with my AT&T number, but moving the SIM card doesn't get me connected to the AT&T data network. I finally figured out how to connect, but I can't get 3G to work.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
AT&T and T-Mobile use different 3G frequencies. So your T-Mobile TP2 is not compatible with AT&T 3g frequencies. The best you will get with your AT&T sim in there is EDGE.
Same problem in Oz...
Telstra uses Next-g network - 850Mhz...
Everyone else uses 3G - 900Mhz...
We have the Touchpro 2 Model 7373 (3G) and the 7381 (Next-G)...
Telstra sim in a 7373 variant means edge service but another carrier uses 3G.
Vice Versa in a 7381 model...
Bloody annoying... Should use ALL frequencies, that would be easier, especially as it say 850 - 1800 Mhz on the band page...
Oh, well....
Not exactly what I had hoped to hear. Thanks for the answer. I guess my next step should be to see if there is any hope for T-Mobile to improve their data coverage.
Usually phones from Verizon is CDMA only and can not work under WCDMA like AT&T network.
Currently the only way to get a Nexus is to get from Verizon. Can I use it under other Carrier whose network is WCDMA ?
THanks a lot !
For the 1,000,000th time, no. The CDMA version will not work on a GSM carrier. Or vice versa. Not with a GSM SIM, or LTE SIM not provisioned by Verizon.
Even if you could, you'd have to buy it off contract from Verizon to use it on AT&T, which would cost you $650 + tax. If you're going to buy it that way you can just import from the UK for ~$690.
