[Q] Steps to root ? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

1)Can I use Revolutionary.io tool to s-off then run unrevoked normally to root my phone ?
2)And when I change my rom how will i know whether something is meant for the HTC Desire GSM or the HTC Desire CDMA ?
Thanks,
3)BTW what is the latest 'version' of HBOOT and can it be rooted using revolutionary ?
4)What are all the different types of HTC Desires out there as I heard something about the HTC Desire being manufactured different after like 6 months of official release?
I am going to buy a HTC Desire but i am just waiting on these questions to be cleared from my mind =]

1. first run unrevoked than do s-off
2.every rom which is meant to be for CDMA has in name "CDMA"
3. you can see that @ alpharev.nl
4. pvt1 was amoled, and now they manufacture pvt4 which has slcd display

What's better amoled or slcd?
I thought that the alpharev x is the way forward as its easier and if I buy a desire running the latest hboot how can I root ?

Its not that I dont understand. Ive already rooted and customized the HTC Wildfire and the HTC Incredible s (for a friend) successfully but the HTC Desire confuzes me as I think the latest HBOOT cannot be rooted yet (am I right? Ive heard this as a mere rumour). Also Ive heard that using revolutionary io is much simpler as it does not involve any isos and what I am asking now is that if I buy a rootable HTC Desire and I use revolutionary io to s-off, can I get the pci49.img (or something that has a file name like that) to flash my recovery via hboot like I have done previously on my htc wildfire and the htc incredible s

Both display types have their advandtages and disadvantages. I would not say one is better, it's just another one and depens on personal preferences.

[Q]Which guide I need to follow to root my desire with S lcd

I just bought my new desire and I find out that the screen is Slcd and my SPL is HBOOT 0.83. Which guide I must follow to root this device?
thx
Use the one called 'root method for hboot 0.83 slcd'. Obviously that is what you want. It's in desire Android development section. Search is your friend...

UnrEVOked woes

Okay here is the situation. I'm trying to root a HTC Desire using unrevoked on my laptop that I've used to successfully rooted another desire in the past. It get so far into the sequence then it says "error getting root, is your software too new"
The phone is a 'new' generic replacement from t-mobile but is showing as being s-off even though it hasn't been touched!?!?
Can any please give me advice on what to try next?

Try flashing a recovery via fastboot.
If it works you should be s-off. Was it s-off before you touched it?

I can see this thread may get a lot of views if your phone came from the factory s-off

I had this problem trying to change the recovery program from clockwork to RA 2.0on my rooted desire. I was using unrevoke to flash the RA 2.0 recovery image file. I had to roll back from 2.3.3 to 2.2 and do a factory reset. As you are on 2.2 all you can try is the reset option.
Being already rooted wasn't the problem and if you Google your error message will find known issues with unrevoked.
Hope this helps.

Yes it was s-off before I touched anything.
I've been reading this thread from the stickies though.

I had the same problem with my phone.
Start with a downgrade to original 2.1 and then run unrevoked and then alfarev to s-off,
I followed a very nice video guide i found on the development forum,
It was the only thing that worked for me.
Hope it works for you to.

The mention of S-OFF on that thread just means that it can be done. Not that every PVT4 model has S-OFF out the box. Seems like you might be lucky in that you have factory S-OFF. I take it it doesn't have the pink AlphaRev banner at the top above where it says S-OFF?

Go to alpha rev irc see if they can help

i got a t-mobile branded desire that was s-off from factory, i had problems using unrevoked on my pc, tried it on a friends and it worked fine
try a different pc and make sure you have the drivers installed and htc sync uninstalled
if you have an eng hboot you can try fastboot flashing the recovery then using the recovery to flash a rooted rom
failing that you can try the old fake flash method of having cwm as an update.zip
booting to recovery the flashing the update.zip which will take you to cwm
it doesnt actually install a new recovery as its fake flash
does the device look slightly different? like brushed aluminium?
i had one of these old s-off eng devices to play with last year.

[Q] Info on root of DHD

Hi hope some kind people can help, i want to root and s-off my DHD. I have spent loads of time looking but just want a simple guide or something. i have an unbranded DHD, ACE PVT SHIP S-ON RL, HBOOT - 0.85.0024, I have got the lastest htc stock 2.3.3 rom version number 2.50.405.2. Can i use revalonary? Do i have to downgrade and stuff. Is root even possible?
You have to downgrade just follow
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
It's not to hard
Sent from my HTC Desire HD A9191 using xda premium
So that is the easiest and only way. I guest I could wait for HTC to unlock hboot or say revolutionary to break it.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I supose but revelutionary won't be able to root your dhd unless there's been a break through to s-off dhd like that.
I'm affraid that is currently your best way to root, I had the latest ota update when I decided to root I tried twice and it worked

After downgrading you can follow this guide to root:

S-OFF needed?

Hi all.
I'm all new to custom roms, rooting etc.
I just rooted my HTC Desire using unrevoked, and I want to flash the RunnyMede 4.5
Is it necessary to have S-OFF? I tried using alpharev hboot reflash utility, but it failed saying my phone wasn't supported or not recognized.
Best regards,
Yorba
Read the thread post, it will tell you what the requirements are
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
All important information are mostly written in the rom's thread.

I wouldn't bother as 4.5 has a few issues noted in the rom thread. I'd wait for 4.6
Okay, thank you for the heads-up.
I can't seem to find any information regarding S-Off in the rom thread though. In addition, I can post a reply on the thread because I'm new to this forum.
Also I was new to rooting and flashing until this summer. But I can strongly recommend alpharev's "AlphaRevX". This tool was extremly easy and quick to use. Have done S-off on 2 desire's with this tool without any promblems .
Wasn't alpharevX replaced by revolutionary?
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
Would say so.
SwiftKeyed from dGB with Transparent XDA App
I actually had to use revolutionary before I could even root my phone. My hboot wasn't supported by unrevoked (1.06 I think). Revolutionary is a great tool.

My bad rootSU, Your'e right. It was!
asaik you do not need to be s-off to use runnymed. But you need the right partition table to run this rom right. If your are still at stock you need to use Bravo CM7 r2 - see alpharev[dot]nl/ (not allowed for me to post links yet)
You just contradicted yourself. In order to change to the cm7r2 partition table you must be s-off.
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App
Thanks for correcting me - just forget the fact that s-off is required when changing partition table
You dont need to s-off if you dont want to. Just run chaqmols rom converter script after you flash the rom.
edit: i justed flashed v4.9 without the rom converter and on stock hboot. runs perfectly. about 1.4gb internal memory.
It would be alot easier just to s-off though.
Sent from my HTC Desire CDMA using XDA App
I got S-OFF which was very very easy and painless using Revolutionary!
I then flashed cm7r2 hboot and then Runnymede4.9, and everything is running smoothly!

Runnymede AIO V2.2 Xd2sdX for this you need to be s-off and using CM7/r2
Alex-V1.7 GB Sense HD ODEXED A2SD/DATA2EXT/Sense2.1+3.0+Mod/bravia Same again you need to be s-off
Droidzone has a 2.1 sense rom that work with stock Hboot.
Is there any way I can s-off except via linux?
What are the restrictions with s-on?
I'm still new to android world so please bear with me.

See my sig I used http://revolutionary.io/ 40 seconds to s-off, make sure htc sync isn't installed and you will need htc fastboot drivers http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
S-off gives you full root, so you can change Hboot to say cm7/r2 http://alpharev.nl/ witch give you more data, but allowing you to install data2ext and keeping dalvik cache on nand memory.
Just make sure you read into it.......you can brick your phone if you mess up.
