(Q) EXT4 recovery defaulting to CWM on reboot? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just flashed Leedroid over Cyanogen 7 had ETX4 recovery on this rom,the recovery has defaulted back to CWM when booting Leedroid,i've used android flasher to re-install EXT4 onto Leedroid, yet each time i boot into recovery it defaults back to CWM?
Incidentally i've also lost the ability with Leedroid to boot into recovery via power and vol-,i can only access recovery on this rom via rom manager.
Solutions greatly appreciated,i've also searched and found nothing conclusive?

This is because Rom manager is using fake flash recovery on reboot. Power down your phone and start bootloader with volume down and power button. Then select recovery and voila you are in the right recovery

Right installed fake flash as instructions.........delete updates.zip in all CWM files and sd card.
Then ran update.zip and get EXT4 recovery, reboot fone and try recovery again and am returned to CWM.

[SOLVED] Can't access Custor Recovery Image from HBOOT

I'm having a issue where I can't access ClockworkMod Recovery (or any other recovery, to be fair) when booting in HBOOT and selecting Recovery.
If I boot throught ROM Manager, I can go into CM like everybody else. If I try to go manually, I end up in the stock Recovery with exclamation mark.
The thing is that I made a tutorial to install CM in Desire and shared with some friends and all of them, following the same steps I made, can go into CM just by selecting Recovery in HBOOT.
Installed thru Unrevoked succefully but got the same issue.
I've tried to flash CM again thru ROM Manager several times with no luck. I can only go to CM if I use the option in ROM Manager.
I've searched a lot but I don't think I'm finding the correct key words.
Anyone has any ideas?
This is important because if I have problems with flashing some ROM and can't get into Android and ROM Manager, I won't be able to do anything without a PC.
I'm using Official SenseFroyo 1.0c from Open Desire.

You will have to flash a RUU Rom to restore recovery
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
You have forgotten one simple step.
When you choose recovery and get the red exclamation mark with a triangle, as described, you then need to press the volume down key and power at the same time. You will then have a blue text menu, choose apply update.zip to load CW recovery ( assuming you have CW recovery stored on your SD card root folder, renamed to update.zip )

Do you mean flash a RUU Rom and then flash a Custom Recovery back thru ROM Manager?
If so, is there any explanation why out of about 5 Desires rooted and with custom recovery flashed the same way, only 1 can't go into CM Recovery strait from HBOOT?
I'll try that as a last resource... If I can avoid flashing a 2.1 ROM and then a Froyo ROM back this would be nice.
Anyway, thanks for the quick help.

Sorry guys, you were right.
It turns out that dispite having using Unrevoked until it said "done", I though it would install CW directly...
Anyway, I just had to push VolUp + Power properly and managed to go into stock recovery and then flash CW.
Thanks atomfix and gekkonz for your help. I would never figure this out myself...
And that ROM Manager thing pointing out I had CW installed is really misleading, by the way...
Doh, yes vol up not vol down

cannot flash the another recovery

I have tried to flash the recovery by using unreovked and choose the custom recovery, after desire rebooted, and go into the recovery mode again, it's still is the clockmod recovery, wt happened? are there another way to flash the recovery? becuz i need to partition my sd card, thx~~
You can use rom manager for that. You'll find it in the market.

Another way to partition your SD card is to use Gparted Live. That is Gparted from Linux. But as a bootable CD (or USB etc) making it runable on almost every system.

Hello everybody,

But I don't know how to reboot into recovery mode.
I searched a lot but I can't find the key combination for rebooting into fastboot/bootloader

Turn device off. When off, press the power button, and start tapping the back button untill device boots into recovery.

I see you posted in the CWM thread, did you boot the recoveryPLAY.img? if so you dont have CWM installed, thats a temp image, your ment to boot from fastboot every time you want to use recovery. You need to flash a kernel with recovery embedded, if your using a r800i with the latest firmware, try doomlords kernel.

What is it, unlike other android device, on the play recovery is held on /boot partition. This is the same partition as the kernel. So if you was to just flash a recovery, this would overwrite /boot partiton, and because there would be no kernel, the device wouldnt boot. So kernel and recovery have to be combined into one boot.img.
That recoveryPLAY.img, NEVER FLASH IT, alway boot it. If you flash it, it will corrupt your /boot partition.

I can't flash Clockworkmod recovery with ROM manager.
It says me that I have to install a Clockworkmod based recovery manually.

As they said u should boot custom kernel (like eg. Doomkernel) to have recovery. I think there is no cwm for play working with stock kernel, or maybe is but it cant be booted.

Hi, I've just rooted my Play and installed CWM using this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5wdnkuQ1dNaW5zdGFsZXIiXQ..
I've installed CWM with no issues (or so the app says) but I can't boot into Recovery. There's an option in the app to reboot into recovery; but all that does it reboot the device normally (except that there's no boot animation). Also tried tapping back continuously during boot and volume down but still nothing.
Is this going to be a kernel issue? If so how should I go about getting the appropriate kernel on my phone?
As the says in description: reboot phone and when it shows sony ericsson logo u should wait for blue led and than start pressing any key an it should boot to recovery

Kernel is a part of phone system which is connecting rom with hardware (i think) there is some custom kernels which is usually (always?) prerooted and has builtin recovery. With custom one u can eg. Overclock and/or undervolt ur cpu
U need to find one here on xda and than boot it using fastboot - in kernel's thread should be said how to do it.

[Q] Try fastbooting a recovery on?

Hi, I have this (noob) question when reading the description of CWM in Android Market:
"HTC Users: Flash recovery not working? Try fastbooting a recovery on."
May I know what does "Try fastbooting a recovery on."
Is that meant booting into recovery with Fast Booting setting ticked?
Thanks.
If I was to interpret that remark literally it would mean that you would have to use fastboot and push a Rom to your phone via fastboot. This requires eng s off and is not noob friendly.
I assume it means that you need to manually enter recovery by powering off phone and holding vol down and power to get into hboot. You must have fastboot unchecked in power settings on a sense Rom if just powering down to enter recovery. If you are using a program to reboot into recovery it doesn't matter.
I would recommend if you have issues with cwm to just use 4ext recovery instead.
4ext recovery is better imo and now has a touch screen UI.
Thanks for answering. I think I understand it now.
I have another (noob) question:
What are the differences between the Market version CWM and this (link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1003723 )?
Which one shall I use?
Thanks again.
Its the same. Just a way for people to get newer versions before cwm releases them. Just use the market to download rom manager and flash your recovery with rom manager.

Hi, Gizmoe. It's me again.
May I know will the partition be formatted to EXT4 in CWM?
Thanks.
You will have to use 4ext recovery if you want ext4 partitions. There is a program in market called 4ext updater that will install it on your phone. This is the version of recovery that I use, because it has more options and ext4 support. Backups you have made with cwm will not work with 4ext and vice versa, just keep that in mind.

Problem with fastboot
Hi. I have padfone2. I have rooted it and all was fine. i removed some stock apps and before installing recovery and backing up the phone i did factory reset. Now the phone shows asus logo then shows android logo with progress bar and few seconds later it reboots and does it again and again. I want to flash a custom rom so i started the phone in fastboot with power/volume buttons. All the screen shows is "Fastboot!!!" at the top of the screen and asus logo somewhere in the middle. I flashed suggested twrp with "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" from the cmd and it looked ok. When I rebooted the phone it went straight into the loop again. When I start it in fastboot mode there is no menu or anything else to start the recovery. What do I need to do to open it. Please help. Thanks.
This is the one V forum so I don't know what you can flash, but when your phone restarts (boot loop) you must have flashed a wrong kernel. To reboot into recovery connect the pad to the pc and type in cmd "adb reboot recovery" then just flash the right kernel, you have to find that on your own, check the thread of the rom you are trying to use
