I'm personally desperate to have a tablet that can print to any of the major-brand WiFi capable printers out there. My HTC Evo 3D phone already does, so it doesn 't seem like an impossible feat for any android version 2.3 and up.
Samsung's Touchwiz update added a Print option to many apps (email/browser/etc..) but limited it to support for Samsung WiFi printers.
So I went looking for a Samsung printer and ended up with the ML-1865W laser printer. It has WiFi, and although I can print to it from my PC or any notebook in the house, the Tab doesn't see it.
If anyone has a Samsung printer that the Tab can print to, please post the model number here.
If anyone finds a list of the supported printers, please post it here.
Thanks!
[I don't have a Samsung printer but wanted to note that I am using the PrinterShare app from the market with success as long as I use it with Google's Cloud Print. It's not the solution but it's a good patch if you do not have supported printer that does comes up on this post]

Thanks, clebanc. I've know about the PrinterShare app for a long time, but what I'm looking for is a system-wide printing capability that doesn't require opening a seperate app, and doesn't require anything other than a wireless connection straight to the WiFi printer. Still looking.
Printing capability was the "killer app" that made PCs so popular, especially in businesses. IMO the first tablet OS to have system-wide printing like Windows or the MAC OS does will be the winner, at least until the other side catches up.
easiest way is to get the app that loads the driver from an external server -> http://www.androidsim.net/2011/08/how-to-34-printing-from-android-devices.html

Not a fan of sending my printer job to outside servers either. The easiest way would be for Samsung to have supported all Samsung wifi printers to start, and then throw in the other brands in the next update.

well i dont think you really send out the print job, only the printer info so it knows which driver to send back.
Isn't it possible to modify the printer files in Touchwiz and make it work on non Samsung printers?

Sure, if you're a programming genius and have access to the technical manuals for all the printers you want to print to. I used to write plotter drivers for a CAD program I'd written 25 years ago, and at least then every printer/plotter came with a thick technical/programming manual. Today printers are plug&play, and all the driver work is handled by Windows or OSx.

printing is working for me to my wifi hp colour laser...... i am using the samsung mobile print app, manually conigured the ip address of the printer, and just chose a samsung model driver with similar capabilities and it is working fine
Does it need to be a wifi capable printer or can you print to a network printer on a windows pc? I have this situation and it can't see my samsung laser printer.
printing works on my samsung 2525w, but i would not say its smooth especially when not using the samsung mobile print app. The option to print is not always available after you copy or highlight an item, more to do with the tablet than the printer i guess.
Look in the market for your printer brand. I found an app made by brother that works with my printer for most items. Abutting else and I use printer share. I have the brother MFC 9840cdw, which is wireless, so I do t need any cloud features.
I noticed cannon and hp have apps in the market .......

Same with you. Only show the MFT and need password.
Try 1234, it is for Omnia...
Awesome. Things are starting to look good!
That is really good.
Tethering FTW
works for me!
[As I posted at PocketNow.com]
I used Samsung Focus. This post is such a life saver! My only gripe against Windows Phone 7 was lack of tethering (I rarely used copy/paste in Win Mo 6.5 and I can live without 3rd party multi-tasking for a while at least). I was spoiled by using WMWifiRouter to connect my netbook to the internet.
Now I can thanks to this hidden feature! I was just able to connect my netbook running Windows 7 Starter and I got Dial up Networking just fine (its been a LONG time since I had to see DUN!). My setup was slightly different: I could not see the Samsung Focus in the ‘adapters’ list and so I ran the DUN wizard and, voila!, I have broadband. I tested speed at Speakeasy.net: I am on east coast. Download speed at Los Angeles was 2.54 mbps. Download at Atlanta was 3.84 mbps. Pretty good!
Now I truly love my Samsung Focus!
Can anyone confirm if the LG and Samsung diagnostic app is the same or just similar?
I have a HTC and am curious if this app is a MS one or if it manufacturer dependent (hopfully MS as that would give HTC folks a better chance of seeing it soon!!!).
Gordon.
Just started using this and I think it is awesome. You can use you're phone as a mouse and keyboard what is really cool is on the glide the hardware keyboard works well. You just have to instal a software on you're computer then gmote from google play. For a media center PC this rocks!

Unified remote (pro). Does everything gmote does along with support for dragging and it keeps the connection alive in the status bar. Also it as like a billion other remotes included (notably file manager and vlc remote).
gmote allows for dragging simply press the mouse button top right then drag. Guess their are many of these out there. First 1 I try that I like is gmote but I am sure others are just as good.
Oh right. Forgot about that button. Don't get me wrong, gmotes decent. I used it for the better part of two years. I just got sick of having to reconnect to the server all the time, especially when switching from phone to tablet and back.
Good to know. I'll give it a try with my xbmc box. Sometimes I do need to go back into windows for some stuff. Otherwise I'm happy with the xbmc remote on android .

Phone My PC and Advanced TouchPad are good as well.
They auto connect to the ip address given, and the both have mouse and keyboard. Plus Phone My PC let's you see the desktop from anywhere in your home(good for keeping an eye on your kids).
Unified Remote (free) - no remotes to try, gmote - no bluetooth. Other favs?

Tried Unified Remote based on this recommendation, but despite showing many free remotes to try in the description, no remotes are present except for buy now.
Looked at gmote, but no bluetooth.
From what I see in the description, Phone My PC doesn't do bluetooth.
Advanced TouchPad also doesn't appear to be bluetooth, and really does appear to be touchpad focused, with only a few very plain looking keys beside it. Which is fine, just not what I'm looking for.
(First driving reason for search - Impress remote. And if one is going to go down the 'remote' path, it may as well be as flexible / capable as whatever is out there. i.e. Given the other similar apps out there, no point going for something that only does Impress.)
UPDATE CORRECTION: Free remotes are present. But if portable version loaded from a network drive, Windows won't load the .dll's - which appears to the Android user as though no remote controls are present. [Serves me right for remote controlling a machine via VNC - missed the quick .dll load failed message!]
Tried unified remote and I like it.I have infrared on my computer from a uirt and am thinking of getting the pros to control my surround sound.anyone tested that? I read it was supposed to support it but I could not find the app to learn the it codes.

Its play link is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Relmtech.Remote and contains a support pointer to http://www.unifiedremote.com/.
On their page is a Hardware link along the top, going to http://www.unifiedremote.com/hardware, at the bottom of which they show a USB-UIRT and more information. $50 + $8 S/H.
So, it would seem to be confirmed that it supports it. It talks about a forum being at http://65.36.202.170/phpBB2/. And also points to http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=26 and http://www.avsforum.com/ for additional information.
'UIRT' - Universal Infrared Receiver Transmitter, so there must be an emitter in the works. The page talks about Girder (http://www.promixis.com/), $50 / $100 / $150, Standard / Pro / WHT - all Windows only.
I would guess you use Unified Remote to tell the pc to emit the codes to your equipment. I'll bet it will take time to train yourself to pick up the glide and not the remote. (Or hide them on yourself. Not sure this would help with a problem I have - perpetually picking up the wrong remote and wondering why it's not working. Only to get blasted by the radio station when I thought I was changing channels!)
HTH.
Has anyone out there heard of any apps for WinRT that enable you to use the Surface or other RT tab as a second monitor via wifi? I'm thinking along the lines of DiplayLink, Air Display, MaxiVista, etc. for iPad.
I really need something like this, and if no one else is doing it, I'm going to have to put my dev shoes back on and write one. I can't beleive that this hasn't been done yet, but maybe there are some barriers on the WinRT OS side that make this tougher than I'm assuming?
Cheers.

Id pay at least 10$ for this app- and im sure that a lot of others would be willing to do the same. Allow me to use my ipad as a 2nd monitor with my Surface - Id pay 20$
You should be able to install a virtual graphics card (similar to http://www.zoneos.com/zonescreen.htm) and then extend the virtual display it gives you over VNC to the VNC client on Windows RT.
I haven't tried/played with that, though.

This looks intriguing - but the warnings about windows 7 blue screen have me a little worried to even attempt to use it using windows 8. Id love to hear if this works - Im not willing to be the guinea pig - I had enough problems getting windows 8 to work on my Thinkpad with unsupported AMD ATI graphics drivers. As it is - I lost all of my power settings, and have no idea how to get them back - Ive seen a forum post recommend a repair installation of windows 8, but I am not confident. I have everything working, all of my software works, my RDP works, I just don't want to screw it up now.

I would love to have this option as well. Is there a way to do it via the hdmi? My pc has hdmi and vga out. I have a monitor hooked up through vga. So would I be able to put the surface in the hdmi spot or is the mini on the surface just out not in?

Seriously need this. I would pay good $$ for an app like this. Please let us know if you make one or find one.
Hello all
I'm still looking for a good app (and likely a paid one) to print from my S3.
I've tried so many and started with the free trials and had a paid app here and there but most are woefully under performing and leave a lot to be desired.
So please tell me which app(s) you use for printing. And hopefully one that is not printer model specific. So, can print to any networked or wireless home printer. Good interface and easy to use and hopefully let's you print anything you want from your phone...ie. browser web pages, personal notes or docs, even screen shots if possible(like print screen) and print from most other apps on phone.
So what's out there? How much? What's your daily?
Thanks

For those of you with the 2014 edition who have used a bluetooth mouse, what does the right click do?
Hey all,
I posted the following question on another thread about a specific bluetooth mouse, and didn't get a response so I figured I'd give it another try with a general post.
I use my samsung devices (Galaxy S1, Tab 10 v1, Note 10 2012 edition, and lately an S4) for connecting to work using the citrix thin client. (In addition to all the other things that make the samsung devices great)
One of the problems I've had since samsung moved to jellybean and beyond is the mouse support. Ice cream and prior, when using a bt mouse, the right click seemed to be ignored by the os, or didn't do anything different than the left click unless you were in a app that supported it. Specifically, passing on a right click command in remote desktop to the session.
After JB, the right click on a mouse seems to have been mapped at the OS level to the 'back' function. This makes using a samsung android device as my thin terminal very difficult, as you still need right click on a lot of standard desktop apps. When I'm connected to my remote desktop, and use the right-click the applications prompts to exit. I don't think the right click ever even gets passed along.
(If you want to know irony, pre JB the mouse worked fine, but CTRL and ALT keypresses were ignored by the Os. try going without easy cut and paste for a day when you work with spreadsheets a lot. )
Anyway, my question is, for those of you with the 2014 edition who have used a bluetooth mouse, what does the right click do?
I'm sending in my 2012 edition to amazon for a trade in, and I'm seriously thinking about getting the 2014 10 or the new 12.2 monster, but if the 12.2 is going to be $1k, I might as well go with a surface pro device for now.
If you're still reading, thanks, I know I've gone on a bit. I've struggled with this issue for a while and it makes it very difficult for me to travel lightly. I can use my android devices in a pinch, but man does it drive me nuts when I need to right click on something and can't Try it sometime. You'll throw your mouse across the godderned room. If you happen to know of any other workarounds for this issue, feel free to make my day.
Right click brings me back, it is annoying when I'm browsing the Web and I want to open a link in a new tab.
I do use "jump" for rdp and it does pass the right click through the session. I have "pocket cloud" as well if you would like me to check that as well.

Thank you, unfortunately I don't have a choice for my remote desktop client as it's a corporate thing. So it appears that the jump client you are using is blocking that default function and forcing the right click.. interesting. I would be interested to know if pocket cloud does the same, but only anecdotally.
I hate the 'back' functionality of google's mouse support. I cannot find any way to adjust it. Heck, turning it off would be an improvement.
