Uhhh...wtf guys?!
How come there is no setting in Gmail App to change the sound when you get a new e-mail?
Looks like they have split up the "Settings" area in to "General" and "@gmail.com".
But when I go to each of these sections, there is nothing to change the sound of when I get a new e-mail.
This is highly annoying!!!! Please help me out!!
Thanks, th3gh05t
menu.more.settings.under account settings.touch [email protected] to bottom.touch labels to notify.touch inbox.
Wow, why did they make it so hard to find now?
I guess it's better since it lets you have different sounds for Labels, and accounts...

Hi guys just wondering if its possible to have different tones for various notifications like sms, emal etc or is it just one tone for everything.Thanks.
If you already have some music on your phone that you want to turn into tones/notifications etc, download Ringdroid from the market. Worked well for me!
thanks mate will give it a try
I've got the unbranded Desire from Carphone Warehouse.
On this device, if you go into gmail app, you can change the notification sound for just that app in the settings. The default choice is "use default [notification] sound", but you can chose others.
You can use any sound they just have to be in the right place.
On SD cards root make folders. Then they will show up when looking.
Alarms - For alarms obviously.
Notifications - For message tones.

I'm not sure if your question has been fully answered; but I was wondering the same thing. How to have a different tone for sms, emails, facebook etc.
I know some apps allow for this in their settings but I can only see one place for 'general notifications' and this applies to all types of notifications.

For facebook open the app press menu then settings. You can choose a sound in here.
I think sms and email has to be the same. Someone prove me wrong please.

OK, got ChompSMS and now can uninstall SMSPopup as Chomp pretty much does the same thing. Great app.
Hi, I've got my Galaxy S for 3 days now and can't figure out how to change the notification tone for calendar reminders.
Searching the net and this forum did not bring me really further (there is supposed to be a "more" under settings but it is just not shown for me).
Thank you for your help and sorry if it's a dumb question it is my first Android after years of HTC WM.

1) On SDkard make a new map called; media.
2) Open media and make a new map called; audio.
3) Open audio and make two maps, notifications and ringtones
Inside the map of notifications attach your personal mp3.
Finished
thank you for your instructions. which i followed. but still can't choose a tone from the menu options in the calendar just the overall notification tone.
I have the same problem (I have started another thread for this a few days ago)...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714948
Yeah I was interested in changing some of the default tones as well, such as the battery low tone.
The program Calendar Snooze lets me choose an alternative tone for reminders BUT additionally to the original tone (but still better than nothing).
There is a hint screen in Calendar Snooze saying that one should disable the default alert in the calendar to exclusively use the one chosen by yourself - what of course I can't do.
My friend's HTC Legend shows (within the calendar app) the option to change the reminder tone.
And yes I read something about reaching the "more" option in the calendar by using hw keyboard or trackball both not available for us.
Any further hints on this highly appreciated
Looking in settings I can't seem to set a different sound for different notifications. IE email sounds different than SMS.
Really? Clearly Android is in need of some 'Mobile Phone' settings.
This was one of my 1st gripes and the way round for me is to use 3rd part apps
1. Disable notifications in Settings
2. Install Handscent SMS and set it to play what ever sound when you get a SMS
3. Install Gmail Popup and set this to play a different sound for Emails received
Works for me and makes my Desire more desirable
removed
Try looking in the apps themself rather than in settings!
i.e. change Gmail notifications in GMail, SMS notifications in your messaging app etc et.

Dave
Yikes... Every mobile phone since like 1982 has been able to change this in one place. I knew I was going to have a few problems with android but wow.
Is there an official place to submit enhancement (20 years ago) requests to the android development team?

You rather miss the point. Since Android allows all sorts of new applications, with all sorts of potentially new notifications, there is no way you can have a "one stop shop" for notifications.
I have 4 email accounts setup in Gmail, and each of them has a different notification sound. It would be very hard to achieve this if notification sounds were handled centrally.

Dave
And if you don't change the sound in an app it uses the default one as set in the 'Sound' settings in the menu, under 'Notification sound'
I was wondering if someone could tell me where the menu choice is to assign a ringtone to my incoming gmail mails? I don't see it where I normally do. I have assigned custom ringtones to my text messages, Google Voice, RINGTONE, calendar events and email without a problem -- I just don't see the same setting choice in Gmail. I'm problably looking right at it and missing it, but... if someone could help, I'd sure appreciate it.
Thanks in advance
Wingmann
I just want it to be silent haha.
I don't think there is an option for a custom ringtone. Not in my version of Gmail anyways. I think it falls under the Notification Ringtone in the Sound settings.
You can change it by going into your Gmail then click on menu/more/settings/"youremail" then scroll down to " Labels to notify" choose "Inbox" you will see Ringtone - My Gmail then you can choose what ever ringtone you like.. Hope that helps
or by settings in noled in accessability

Your directions were perfect, jmares! Thank you so much for the info. I knew it was there somewhere, but I guess I didn't click further into that particular box's setting. I now have a custom ringtone for gmail again. It was much easier to get to/change when I used gmail on my HD2! Anyway, I hope this helps others, too!

I installed K9 Mail. wow am I impressed with this. I mean really impressed.
I have 5 issues. I am wondering if there is a FORUM anywhere for K9 ??
#1 Sound notifications. it plays one for EVERY single message that comes in. is there a setting anywhere (I looked did not find one) to make it only announce ONCE until I check the mail like gmail does?
#2 When I click the icon to open K9 it goes to the menu with 3 options.
Unified Inbox
All Message
gmail (my account)
I never EVER want to see this screen. now it has an option to check for "goto unified" when you starup but it appears to have no effect.
when I click the "notification" in the status bar it goes directly to unified.
but when I click a shortcut to the k9 application 100% of the time it loads that menu first and I have to then click Unified Inbox to goto mail.
anyway to fix this?
#3
I have mine set for VERY TINY text. I LOVE that I get so much info on the screen really love it.
problem is I can not tell the difference between "read" and "not read" messages. is there anyway to differenciate it more?
I am using the dark theme.
there is a difference. read is offwhite unread is bright white but its VERY hard to make this distinction on the screen at this font size.
#4 some message have a "gray" highlight over the entire message entry on the list. What does this mean?
in relation to #3 this would be PERFECT for distinguishing read and unread. ie grey highlight for unread no grey highlight for read (this is now how its being used now)
#5 There is a BLUE BAR at the top that says Unified Inbox # etc.. etc..
is there anyway to remove this? its useless info I just don't need and would rather it goaway (I could see it being useful if you had multiple mail boxes but I don't)
any help would be greatly appreciated.
besides these quirks (and they are rather minor quirks for the most part) I and FLAT OUT impressed. Hard core. with this program.
