[Q] Buying a Good MicroSD - General Accessories

I live in China and I'm having some trouble to find a good microsd.
First thing, prices vary wildly, it might be because some are counterfeits and or lower speed (something about the class).
So does one go about buying a good microsd card?
Which class is faster?
Is branded better? How to make sure it's not a counterfeit?

I would order one online if you can. There are different classes for Micro SD cards. The higher the class, the faster the read/write speeds are. I believe the classes go as follows : 2, 4, 6, 10

I'm live in Silicon Valley in Northern California, home to SanDisk, Patriot, and other big makers of SD cards. I come across tons of real and fake SD cards all the time.
First thing I look for is the brand name. The packing that the SD card usually displayed the brand name as well as it's labeled on the SD card itself. Also, brands like SanDisk have the model number of each card on the packaging, which you can reference online prior to purchase.
I have a Patriot 16 GB Class 10 Micro SD card that I purchased from Amazon.com. - They have a policy against counterfeit items and you can get a refund if one is sold to you. Another website to look at to find good deals on SD cards is NewEgg.com.
Class 10 is the fastest and the most beneficial to devices like phones or high-speed digital SLR cameras. I suggest class 10 SD cards should you want to run programs right off from the card itself.
Hope this helps! Cheers!

I ordered a lexar 16gb class 6 from ebay and get 9.1 write/30.2 read speeds.Sandisk is the best brand but I haven't seen a class 6 by them. I paid 35$ for my Lexar

I just picked up a 16Gb, class 6 Kingston. I'm running my smartphone apps off it and it is WAY faster than the stock 8Gb, class 2 card that came with the phone.

sometimes the brand are affecting very much.. and also maybe you can try to buy in large store, so you can believe the seller, that it is not a fake one..
from the information, class 10 is the best (idk if this is real, since my class 10 card hasn't come), to find out if it was the right card and not a fake one, search in google on how to test a microSD card..

Thanks for that link very informative.

This is probably a massive noob question, when you install a new SD card, do you just copy and paste the content of the old one onto the new one or is there anything special that needs to be done?

I would first format the new SD card in the device, then copy and paste the content of the old card to it.

Transcend 16GB class 10

Why don't ya choose class 10?
is it unavailable for yours?

The 64 GB Micro sd are coming!

I have a class 2, never tried anything faster so I wouldn't know the difference anyway, but it runs any program just fine.

Which micro sd card do you suggest to buy?

hey
Which card should i buy?
Which class is the internal memory?
Do i need class 10 card?
thnks.
I have a 16 gig class ten and it made no difference on my N1 compared to the stock class 4 card as far as performance goes with apps2sd and the like during operation. It also made no difference transferring files to or from the sd while in the phone. It is much faster if you take it out and plug it into the laptop though. I'm not sure if that limitation applied to the N1 alone or is common with this one. I was thinking of getting a 32 gig because then I could carry all my music and wouldnt have to hassle with it as the internal storage is enough for all my other uses. Knowing what I know now I will likely go with a name brand class 4 card. Too many horror stories with fake cards and my own experience is that the extra speed from class 10s doesnt do much of anything in my usage.
If you do a search you will find several recent threads on SD cards....
You don't need class 10! because this is not a super professional camera. Class 4 is enough (in some case even class 2 is enough 'cause some people say that class 2 speed of some manufacturers is faster then class 4 of other ones).
I have ordered SanDisk class 4 32gb and still wating for delivery...
Choose only good manufacturers, such as: SanDisk/Trancerd/Kingston/A-Data (and before doing an order, check on their official website (and google a lil' bit) if the particular class exist - for example if you will see class 2, 6 or 8 of Kingston on ebay, know that it's a fake since kingston has only 4 and 10 classes according to their website)
I don't know if this is only in the Netherlands but here its possible to get a 8GB micro sd for FREE from Samsung when you registrate your purchase on the samsung site. (only condition is that you buy your device before the end of may)
On my camera I've had issues when recording hd quality movies in anything less than a class 6.
So I'm going for class 6 or above on phone

Which card did you get? Im looking for the cheapest sandsik 32 gb right now, sandisk's are underrated. a class 2 can be faster than a other brand class 4 or 6.
if you google "SD class speeds " the second link down (this is applicable to micro sd as well gents)
it will show you what class you will need for what application eg recording 1080p on your phone will require a class 4 minimum however class 6 is "moar" recommended
however as stated above class 10 isnt needed and if you read a few reviews some class 6 in the case of sandisk e.g. the sandisk extreme class 6 III is faster than some cheapo class 10.

micro SDHC class
so, can somebody please confirm that class 4 micro SDHC card (good brand) is enough for taking videos on GS2? I am looking at 32GB and it seems there is a shortage of class 10 cards in my country, should I buy class 4?
I believe the semi official numbers for 1080P recording on the SGSII is 17Mbps? That means a bit more than 2MB per second. 'Class' refers to how many MB's the card can write each second, so class 4 should be fine for 1080P, as well as many class 2 cards. But of course faster is always better
I bought a class 2 32 gb from amazon.it...
Can you suggest me a program / tool to test its speed?
Anyway, I used it to record a full hd video for 15 mins. I watched it entirely and I didn't notice any skipped frame or stucks etc.. It runs fine
Just plug in to a pc and copy a large file. That will show you the speed.

Have a look for h2testw Version 1.4. It's a free utility that will test capacity and speed. As you may know, the problem with lots of card on sale is that they have been hacked to make it appear that they have a greater capacity than they actually have. It can be sometimes hard to spot but h2testw (and, no doubt, others like it) will do proper checks.
im after a good 32gb card anyone has any trusted sellers (internationally shipping) would like to share

32 GB Class 4 $55.00 from Amazon itself

If you're looking for a decently priced 32GB class 4 Microsd card backed by one of the biggest and most respected retailers in the world, you can do much worse than this:
http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-Class-microSDHC-Memory-TS32GUSDHC4/dp/B004R7P28W/ref=pd_cp_e_1
This is sold by Amazon... not "fulfilled by Amazon" but actually sold by them. So $55.00 buys you the peace of mind of knowing that if there's anything wrong with the card, you can always get your money back. Plus, this is about as cheap as I, personally, have seen legitimate 32GB cards sold for.
Also, buy with Amazon's Super Saver shipping and shipping is free (does take a bit longer, though.)
In any case, this is probably what I'll do when I get around to upgrading my 16GB card for a 32.

The higher the number, the faster the write speed. Class 10 is the fastest I have seen in a 32GB MicroSD card. Here is a link on the class differences:

I ordered mine last night and can't wait for it to get here!
I bought a Patriot 32gb Class 4 for $39 + 1.99 shipping from Frys.com. It was a weekend only sale and I ordered mine like 30 minutes prior to the sale ending that Sunday night (so I didn't have time to mass post the deal here). I've since received it and it works great. I'm using it in my Acer Iconia A500 tablet instead of my Evo though. You'd think that watching hi-res movies on the larger screen of the A500 would put the read speed of this Class 4 card to the test, but the whole experience has been flawless.
If you're in the market for a 32gb card, I'd keep an eye on the usual websites (Amazon, Buy.com, Newegg, Frys, etc.) because they Class 4 cards are starting to get rather affordable. The Class 10 cards are still a bit too pricey for my wallet.

My understanding is that the read speed on most of these cards is going to be fine. It's the write speed that varies most and which is dependent on the Class rating of the card. I've got a 16GB class 2 card in my Nook Color and there's no lag watching movies.

The read speed varies significantly between the card classes as well. The big question is whether or not the hardware (which typically trails behind the media) can take advantage of a card with faster access/read times. I haven't found a utility that can speed test the external SD card in my Tegra2 based Acer A500 tablet, but in a thread on another Android forum, the Evo hardware was shown to take advantage of the significantly faster read times in Class 6 & 10 cards.
All that being said, how fast a read time does anyone really need? I've never felt the need to date to go faster than Class 4 card in any of my devices, for both read and even write times.

I wouldn't mind faster write times on my Nook Color if only to be able to copy movies on and off faster (on my current card it takes between 3 and 5 minutes per 1.5 GB title.) Other than that, yeah... not much reason. I've made lots of videos on my Evo and never noiticed any issues with write speed on my Class 4 card.

I've got a class 10 16GB card in my evo. AND I CORRECTLY did speed tests through my computer and through the phone. and with the class then, there was a huge improvement on speeds even while it was installed in the evo. Professionally speaking.. I think they should install class 10 in all mobile phones. :-D it will only go as fast as its slowest connection.

Which class 10 32GB microSD card?

so, which would be the best, most stable class 10 micro sdhc card? i can't seem to find a definitive answer, as everyone seems to complain about the cards not being a "true class 10", etc. there are only a few reviews on newegg,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ... 600006235 600082443&IsNodeId=1&name=Class 10
and amazon, a bunch of people complain about the speed ratings mot being true.
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_s...32gb+micro+sd+class+10&ie=UTF8&qid=1318260310
which one do you guys have experience with, and would recommend? the kingstons are just out of the question, as i doubt that they'd be worth twice the coin.
It would be nice if you narrow it down to specific cards.
Although there is to note that most people do not need anything past a class 4 which is more than enough to handle day to day transfer between phone and card.
Sandisk seems to be a darkhorse here since they don't really show you a class number and it ranges from 2 - 6 mbps. The best way is to simply test it out with a SD card testing program.
thanks for the response. specifically, i like the PNY and SanDisk, but like you said, sandisk is secretive about their speeds. i don't want to buy, test the speeds, and return if i'm not happy with it. and is class 10 not required for recording HD video on our phones? thanks again
nah, class 10 is not required to record HD video. besides if i remember correctly, the dz only records up to 720p. you should still be fine unless you're shooting a 20 minute video.
There are some reports from people with various issues with Class 10 cards. Its not widespread by any means (plenty of people here seem fine with their Class 10), but it seems that Class 10 have more issues than lower Classes. So some here will recommend Class 4 or 6 (can't remember which) as the highest you should get.
I'd stay far away from PNY if I were you. I've owned 2 PNY products. Not Micro-SD, but an SD card and a USB thumb drive. On the thumb drive, the USB port and memory chip pulled/broke right out of the plastic casing with regular use (not damaged in any way). The thing just looked and felt flimsy. But I needed one in a hurry for a business trip, and I bought what the store had. I figured, its a USB thumb drive, you can get these things for free. How bad can it be? And I was shocked when the thing actually broke apart after a few weeks.
Similarly, the PNY SD card I have split into 2 pieces (along its seams). In both cases (PNY thumb drive and SD card), the memory chip itself still worked fine, and it was just a matter of using some super glue to hold together the plastic casing that failed. But it just displays shoddy and cheap build quality. I own 3 Sandisk Micro-SD cards, and a couple Sandisk SD cards and thumb drives. Never had an issue with any of them, and build quality is much better than PNY.
There is a long thread in accessories with SD recommendations:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1042324
DUDE! I had the same problem with the PNY thumb-drive! It was the attache series I think. Anyways yea stick to well known brands that are consistently rated high, sandisk, kingston, adata, etc. Honestly though, class 6 would probably be the fastest you'd need unless your gonna be taking extremely high quality pictures at a very fast speed lol aka multi-shot. But then again I'm not sure our phone is even up too that anyways lol.
I have an ADATA 16GB Class 10 from newegg. Has given me zero issues. I would imagine this is probably the same for the 32gb version.
Not sure if the 32GB would hold up. I found out that I'm not that big of a packrat on the size of the SDcard, so I went with a 16gb instead of paying more for space I'd never use, or take years to accumulate.
h2testw 1.4 log after testing it out when I received it:
Warning: Only 15786 of 15787 MByte tested.
Writing speed: 15.1 MByte/s
Reading speed: 18.5 MByte/s
It was definitely a step up from the 4GB class 4 kingston I was previously using, which was getting write speeds of around 5-6mb/sec. After moving onto the Adata, I noticed speedier loading in the photo gallery like night and day. It used to take 2-3 seconds to load the gallery, especially if it was a big picture folder. Now it takes literally milliseconds to load the content. Of course, this may just be anecdotal and placebo effect, but my general experience with android and sdcards for the last 3 years is on the line about it.
actually i retract the kingston comment, i think they had problems with 32gb class 10 cards specifically now that i recall...

I'm thinking of getting a class 4 myself, don't feel like paying almost +100% for class 10. I'll probably get an A-Data, as it gives a decent price per GB. I'm just torn between 16 and 32 GB

If you look through the thread I linked on my previous response, you will see there are some folks that claim more data corruption issues with 32 Gb cards versus smaller capacities. It seems purely anecdotal. But my point is, don't assume.

You also want to test the speed if you get get one. I had one marked as a class 6 but wasn't even a class 2. Made the phone freeze up.
I remember reading about a delay when unlocking the screen whenever an SD card was installed. Can't seem to find anything about it now though. Anybody know what I'm talking about?
I get the slight delay but the thing with mine is i get the delay whether my sd card is in or not.

as stated in the op, im a new sd card buyer, so dont bash me lol.... what programs are used to check the speed? ive read on how to see if its legit but not the programs that check them
I remember back in the day on the G1 when you had to run apps to sd and partition your card. I bought a supposed class 6 8gb card on eBay for cheap. It was definitely slower than my Sandisk class 2. I'm using a 32gb class 4 SanDisk I conned my buddy out of his Thunderbolt. Must say so far I like it. Try craigslist. I know I picked up a 16gb for cheap a while ago...
I bought this one from ebay.

I like it so far, when phone boots up it takes about 4-5 seconds to finish scanning the internal and external storage.
I'm rocking a Lexar 32gb class 10 card. No problems so far and I've been using it for close to a year now.
I personally have bought 2 32GB micro sd cards I bought this one http://www.bestbuy.com/site/PNY+Tec...6197.p?id=1218372338726&skuId=3026197&st=32gb micro sd card&cp=1&lp=6 and its good but some phones cant write at a class 10 speed (this was designed for tablets) and it causes some errors so i bought this one too http://www.bestbuy.com/site/PNY+-+3...9077.p?id=1218318857031&skuId=2299077&st=32gb micro sd card&cp=1&lp=2 this one rocks no issues works great in my S2 e4gt and i have the the other in my 3vo BUT I just found this for an awesome price http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Kingsto...3545.p?id=1218354912613&skuId=2603545&st=32gb micro sd card&cp=1&lp=1 so there are some options and if you need any help ask

so then you got errors using a class 10?
I recently purchased a PNY 32GB Class Ten MicroSD card with SD adapter for about $65. Pretty damn good deal considering the class speed of the card and the SD adapter being thrown in. Been rockin' it for about two weeks and haven't had any problems whatsoever

higher class number means higher write speeds, but that doesn't always mean better read speeds.
IMO higher class cards are better when your doing photography and video stuff
I read my card more often than write to it so a lower class card with better read speeds is better for me.

I got a sandisk 32GB class 4. It is plenty fast enough. I record pics/video to onboard phone storage anyways. I store vids, music, etc on the sd card and it reads very fast. I haven't move any apps to sd card because we have plenty onboard memory.
what's a good price for a 32GB class 4 microSDHC? i've been waiting for about 2 weeks for a deal to be posted on SD, but haven't seen one yet.
amazon is selling a sandisk for $37. i'm wondering is i should just buy this?
Bestbuy has the Kingston class 4 32gb for 42.99? Do you all think that's a good deal? I know amazon has the Sandisk 32gb class 4 for 37, but i has mixed reviews.

you can't go wrong with any of them, both offers stability, reliability and speed.
whichever is the cheapest my lad, both pretty solid brands.
I use Samsung, happy with it. Not sure if this will help but.
Get whatever is cheaper. Both appear to be good cards based on the reviews. Keep in mind that most if not all phones will not be able to take advantage of the Ultra-High Speed (UHS) capabilities of the latest UHS-1 cards (50+MB/s read) as seen in jasvncnt1 SD Card Tester results. I get similar results with my Class 10 cards.
A while back, a lot of people were recommending the Sandisk 32GB Class 4 microSDHC cards over just about anyone elses regardless of class rating. While this may have been true back then, most manufacturers are now producing pretty decent memory. I've got a Sandisk 32GB Class 4 in my Fascinate, a PNY 32GB Class 10 in my Lenovo K1, and a G.SKILL 32GB Class 10 in my Galaxy S3 and have had no issues with any of these cards.
Come to think of it, the only card that I've had issues with is the Samsung 16GB Class 2 card that came with my Fascinate. After about about a year and a half, it became permanently write protected. I can still read from the card, but can no longer write to it.
Hope this helps.
Samsung.
I got that Samsung and its perfect. But would have gotten either one at the time...found the samsung locally at frys first and it was cheaper so it won...no issues what so ever
Samsung phone plus Samsung SD Card
I chose sandisk. Never had an issue with them

that test was done on the internal sd card....not the removeable external sd card.

i have had 2 of those sandisk uhs-1 cards identical to the op's choice. they worked great for about a week, then i had all sorts of reliability issues with them. bummed me out, but i sent them back and went with the samsung. haven't had 1 issue since and performance is great.

Dam your right, sorry I'm an idiot. Maybe this one...
Just as a point of reference, I've attached the SDCardTester results from the PNY 32GB Class 10 card that I use in my Lenovo K1 tablet running JB AOSP.
