I finally got srf 1.2 to work really good. I have a few questions about voltage control.
1. Is it safe to overclock and undervolt?
2. What advantages will I see from undervolting, longer battery life?
3. Does overclocking really make that much difference, and is it safe?
4. Is there a how to, or a guide that can show me how to do it?

Yes its safe just don't use the set on boot feature. As for battery improvement some people notice a difference and others don't I personally do undervolt. As for the guide just mess around with it for a while everyone Has different Preferences so results will always be different. I don't undervolt below 75 cause when I do I get lock ups. If you lock up just pull the battery and you'll be fine. I also recommend to use journaling ON cause if you lock up and pull the battery with journaling off you might get data corruption.

What kernel are you on?
I'm on Twilight and can overclock to 1.3ghz with full stability. I don't undervolt. Combination of my phone doesn't like it and I'm not looking to save that little battery to get wakelocks (phone doesn't come out of sleep mode because the processor speed is too slow or doesn't have enough juice to make that push.)
If you're using a kernel that can go to 1.4 or 1.5 test it for a while before you save your settings. Also consider buying the paid version. It allows over volting which may allow you to supply enough power if 1.4 or 1.5 causes freezes.
The app is pretty basic. The top bar on the first screen is how low you allow the processor to go in speed. The bottom is how fast. Lower than 100 mhz causes wakelock for me. Or used to. Haven't tried since. My settings are 200-1300 mhz. Second page is voltages. They start at default. If you have extreme, moving them to the right will overvolt and give those speeds extra power. Moving the slider to the left undervolts. Some people can only undervolt at the lowest speeds of say 100-400 mhz. It's a lot of trial and error. Have fun though!
So on the main page my settings are 200-1300, then I press apply settings. How can I tell If it is working, it does not seem that much faster? Do I have to set this every time I turn my phone on? Do I want to save thos for boot up?

When you turn your phone off then on, does it show those same settings? The speed boost will be slight. It's not like we're resurrecting Jesus here.

I need educated on a few things, I'm concerned with the performance of my phone so I have it rooted and I have installed system panel to monitor things, autokill memory optimizer for ram of course as well as watchdog to alert me if any apps are outta control. Am I crazy for having these or is it a good idea? Also is there anything better I should use rather then what I already have? I just want my phone to run smooth and my battery to last bc I use my phone all day long

A lot of that is unneeded. I have System Panel, but only use it if I'm having problems with an app. Rarely is there a use for watchdog. On stable ROMs, I've never seen an app get out of control, and rarely on betas. So it justs sits in the background eating battery itself. Also try, using a stock speed, undervolted battery with SetCPU. If I'm trying to make mine last, I have a screen off profile of powersave 384/245, and regular of 700-800ish (I forget)/245 conservative.

ok thanks, i installed setcpu and have two profiles set, one for when screen is off with settings similar to yours and another set to when my battery is >30%. could you please tell me what the governor options of on demand, userspace, or performance mean ?? also should i set priority's to anything other then the default 50 % ? thanks for the help
Recently i've ventured into kernel threads wondering how i can get better battery life on my G2. I consider myself pretty well versed in roms but Kernels are a whole new animal for me.
I have read so many threads im becoming dizzy. If i have to flash a kernel for better battery, which one? I dont have demands for a faster phone. Most of the threads about kernels i have read are all about getting a faster clock. Im fine with the speed of my G2. I just want better battery.
Can some one provide me with some literature on the subject, point me in the right direction, or even better, answer some questions for a noob in this particular subject??
What Kernel to use?
Can i flash over CM 6.1 Stable?
Do i need to wipe before flash?
Any assistance will surely allow me to sleep better at night.

I can tell you im running virtuous 7.2 i find pershoots kernel the best for battery.

If you want great battery life, don't use a sense rom. They're battery hogs as it is. Stay on CM 6.1 and flash pershoots latest kernel. Get setcpu and set a profile to 245/245 when the screen is off.
With these settings I get awesome battery life and I'm overclocked to 1497.

Oh ya i learned through trial and error to stay away from sense roms.
Can i ask you why you overclock? I dont find myself in any moments where i think the phone should be going faster.
I can flash pershoots over cm with no problems?

Well i lpike sense but only when its ocd sense too sluggish on stock g2 speeds. Also even with ocing and runing sense my bat last just about all day. It sometimes needs a shot a juice if im useing gps or playing a lot of games but thats it.

Decent battery life on my G2.
I'm running htc sence on mine with the pershoot kernal and cpu tuner.I have tweaked profiles and my battery life is better than b4.Example, i took it off the charger(ac) yesterday morning @ about 9:20am & today Thur, i checked the [email protected] 11:50am and my battery is only @ 40%.(1 day,3hrs & 31min's later)not bad.That's WITH moderate use.

When I went into SetCPU, it always kinda confused me. That could be why I was never interested in overclocking.

@dangabob13...Don't worry about all the questions i'd want to b super carefull as well.First, cpu tuner is a free app in the market much like set cpu except u get more options as far as customizing your profiles.Second you can find the pershoot kernel right with in rom manager.Just go to the download rom section & its the 3rd one down.I didn't wipe and i haven't had any problems.The reason i switched to the pershoot kernel was because i was having problems waking up the screen with HTC sense and the kernel it came with.This fixed the issue for me.No need to b confused it's actually pretty simple.My profiles for cpu tuner are as follows:
Under the "Current" tab: i have the governor set to "conservative" i have the cpu o.c to 1094 MHZ.No need to go crazy over clocking i find this to b fast enough for now. The rest of my profiles:under the "profiles"tab,
Performance:Ondemand-Max:1094 Ghz,Min:768Mhz.
Good:Conservative-Max:1094Ghz,Min:768Mhz.

Quick question....doesn't CM6.1 Stable have the pershoot kernel already? Also does the Pershoot kernel the one that goes to 1.8Mhz?

I OC for games mainly, but also to watch tv and movies, the extra umph really helps. My setup on SetCPU are:

Screen Off 245 / 245 Powersave Priority 90
Charging/full 1497 / 245 Interactive Priority 85
Battery<10% 268 / 245 Conservative Priority 80
Battery<30% 806 / 245 Conservative Priority 70

I dont have a conservative option under the Governor dropdown. is that important. Otherwise i duplicated your settings. Boasting 27 hours of up time and 40% left is bound to make me jealous ill test it out. Thanks again.
That's strange is your cpu tuner app up to date? I also wanted to mention that my screen brightness is set to 20%,heptic feed back is turned off and so is vibration. Along with a few other battery saving options you should see a difference in battery life.Obviously results will vary.

Ha its so funny. I have the same exact settings. i took a look around and turned off all that stuff. I keep my GPS on because it only uses battery when its being used. But i turn off wireless locations so that its not always trying to centralize my location.
I froze all of the DRM services as shown in the picture below, yet it is still hogging battery resources as shown below.
Does anyone know how this is possible and how to fix this?
I'm using SleeperRom 1.0.11 and Shadow Kernel 1.03+.

That doesn't help. Percentages don't mean anything. ALL your applications have to run through android system. Take off android from your phone and you can't run anything. To see what is using your battery check Betterbatterystats. What files have the most time on them? Check processes and partial wakes if your battery drains while your phone is in standby. Also get CPUSpy and make sure your phone goes into deep sleep when in standby and not on charge.
Just because it lists DRM in the android system does not mean it is using more than a second or two of quick checking services. This is why some apps screw up if it is removed instead of just frozen. It has to check if the files are still on your phone.
Thanks, i'll try that app. I assumed that since it was at the top, it was using the most. Since updating to SleeperRom 1.0.11 and Shadow Kernel 1.03+, my battery does not seem to be as good even though I have not changed the way I use my phone. This is why I was investigating.
after checking betterbatterystats, I don't even see the DRM service anywhere within the app, so I guess that is good.
I guess my phone just doesn't agree with the update to sleeper 1.0.11 and shadow 1.03+

I have not tried that combo but is there a default overclocking setting? I tried SleeperROM before and it defaulted to 1100 Mhz overclock. If you came from a ROM with no OC set then that would explain it.

I usually don't touch the overclock settings and I always to do clean wipe when installing my roms, so whatever is default should stay.
voltage control is set to conservative, min 100, max 1000 Mhz.

If you set that as apply on boot after the wipes if you mean data wipe, and install then it should be 1000 max. Easiest way is just check CPUspy. Have you changed brightness on your display? Did the ROM add any apps like Gtalk with video that you didn't have before that may need to be frozen? Definitely get Betterbatterystats and check what's running.

I think the major difference is the shadow kernel and the use of voodoo color. I was previously on samurai 2.0.6 or 2.0.8 i think.
I have always had auto brightness on. Betterbatterystats did not reveal anything out of the ordinary.
I guess i'll just try a new rom/kernel combo and see if I can get better results. Thanks for your help Kenny. Betterbatterystats is a nice tool i had not known about.
No problem. I did find that voodoo color and the voodoo control app use a little extra battery plus having to increase brightness a little with voodoo color used up a little more battery.

Hi all I'm fairly new to these forums, although I have been watching from afar for quite some while now!
I have been trying out custom roms and various kernels and was wondering how do I go about overclocking my device? Only reason I am asking is because I was checking out benckmark results for other devices and noticed some can be particularly high.
Any insight would be most appreciated!
I wouldnt try any overclocking on the HOX because of the heat issues. A more safe and stable way of doing it is changing the govenor of the kernel or forcing cores online. I think you can use core control (in the apps and themes section) to change core behaviour and system tuner to change govenor.

you can download an app called tegrastats to find out more but all you should know is this. once you activate the corecontrol and depending what app you use you should be fine. if i was you i would also use no-frills cpu app. that way you can underclock and would save you more juice

Fantastic! Many thanks for the advice. I have now installed no-frills cpu, and started to tinker around with the settings. Could I ask as I am still fairly new to some of this, when I first went on to the settings both maximum and minimum were set to 1.5 GHz (Not sure if it was just saying this on the app or not or if these are the actual settings) but I would guess this would use a lot more power am I right?

yes you are right. put the min frequency to say 200 or 300 mhz and then press apply on boot and then reboot and you should be fine

I was going to post a link to a setCPU guide, but its no longer available
Id only push the CPU a little. In order to gain real gaming perfomance increases you need to push the GPU, but in order to do that you will need a kernel that supports it.
I only received my tablet last night and wont be rooting it until the weekend so cant say what settings ill be using yet. my aim is to attempt to overclock slightly and undervolt where I can...
You're not going to break it with SetCPU. If you overclock too much, the system will become unstable, then just back off. Also, the system will shut itself off well before any temperature possible of causing permanent damage was reached.
SetCPU has an option to create a recovery-flashable zip file, which resets the CPU settings to default. I would absolutely take this precaution, as I've had to resort to it on my old HTC Flyer tablet (became unstable, and bootlooped). As long as you select this option, you're pretty safe.
Other than that, just follow the basic rule of overclocking any computer, and push the clock up one or 2 increments at a time, then test for a few hours to see if the tablet is stable under various usage conditions. Repeat until you've either reached a desirable clock speed, or encounter instabilities.
Also, as you may already be aware, higher than "stock" CPU clock steps are normally not available unless you flash a custom kernel.
The trickster app supports GPU overclock on Civato's kernel.
If you're looking to push the GPU that's the way to go.

Does the Trickster app allow for senario clock settings. Ie. underclock the CPU on screen off or if battery is bellow a certain percentage?
I may have to switch from setCPU to it if it has the same settings and more...
