AM I INSANE??? Okay, att advertises being the only carrier to make a call and browse the web at the same time. But I noticed while tethering with 4g, I can make a call at the same time!!! Is it just me?? I dont remember Sprint ever saying anything about this...
Its for 3g only. Its a cdma thing. All gsm phones can use 3g while talking on the phone. 4g and wifi work for cdma to be able to for that.

Just kinda made me wonder...I've never noticed it before.
Yeah it does suck cause sometimes im out and on the phone and I can't use the internet without hanging up on 3g. At home when Im on wifi though I can do it.

Hehe...I wish i had wifi. I use 4g for most of my internet needs (even tho i get <1 bar of signal)
I thought that those commercials were an advertising scam because I have always had 4G with this phone. I just recently found out that it doesn't work the same for people on 4G

A CDMA limitation, if I'm not mistaken.

That's correct; GSM phones [AT&T as an example] use a different radio for 3G and voice. CDMA [sprint, verizon] use the same radio for data and voice. You can surf and talk if you are using wifi or 4G though.
Because Sprint sucks. :-D. and CDMA sucks too. :-D There are A BUNCH OF limitations on CDMA. Wonder if anyone has a link to all the limitations of it. then also compares GSM and other american based networks. :-D

You can do the following:
Install grove Ip, set it to use 3g/4g enter ur google voice info, and make phone calls over data, then u can surf and talk same time. Now if u get a real phone call ur call will drop though, unless u set ur phone to ignore calls while using data.
It amazes me what peoplbash on somethinge
They know nothing about. gsm sucks so bad they had to come up with different technology just to get 3g speeds... Which is why they can surf and talk at same time gsm for talk. And a completely different technology for data

I wasn't. Talking bout up lol sorry if u thought I was but to clear up at& t uses gsm for talk and text and w-cdma for data which is why they can do both at same time two different radios where as sprint and vzw use Cdma for both talk and data
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Cant we use 4g while talking on the phone? Its a different antenna for both.
3g uses the same antenna as phone calls and can not share the antenna at the same time.
How many times have you made a phone call and needed to surf the internet?
Lol all the time I'm not sure how wimax works with cdma but i kno u can with lte
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
so can the photon 4g be able to be on the phone and internet in the same time?
If you are on 4g you can browse and make a call at the same time. When I am on 4g I can actually be on the phone while I run WIFI tether to 2 laptops.
If you can actually connect to 4g, service sucks here in Metro Atlanta.
Well thanks for the responses guys. That's all I wanted to know

I just recently purchased an epic 4g touch on sprint with their unlimited plan and every where I go I usually get full bars but still can't go faster than 9kb/s once I hit around 30 but over been hearing people get around 200-300 anyone know what I can do to increase my speeds. Also note I don't have 4g in my area so that's not an option
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
That is normal Sprint speed....
But seriously, try going to a Sprint store. Checking your phone side by side with their model Epic 4G Touch.
Thanks I might try that gotta revert to a stock rom tho. Also my parents had crappy Samsung intercepts and i saw about 100-150 KB/s so it might be my phone

I think the signal bars prioritize 1x (aka 2G) for phone signal, rather than actual data speeds. I also heard signal strength isn't as big of a concern with CDMA as it is with GSM. (Meaning CDMA can reach farther, I think.)
Well is there anything I can do cause phone calls and texting work great its the data connection that slows down it took 2 solid days downloading to get grand theft auto 3 lol I really want this to work better for tethering I don't have wifi

Has Sprint's signal always been...lacking there? Or has it suddenly gotten that bad? My guess if it you used to have good speeds, then there must be an outage somewhere. You can try all of the 3G and 4G modifications to see if they work better. Also flashing each modem 1 by 1 and testing each one can help some. But overall, you wont see much of an improvement because signal usually has to do with Sprint's end.
Haven't tried flashing each modem but ive done modifications to my 3g settings ive even tried going into data programming and changing the port it connects to. Sprints coverage might have degraded out here it wasn't too great to begin with I get stuck in roaming alot lately

Yep that's sprint for ya. They will tell you its because they have so many customers and all of them are abusing the network.
So I wonder how att and Verizon manage to have better speeds.

I just remembered. Sprint offers airaves to people with bad signal at home. An airave hooks up to your riuter or modem and broadcasts sprint signal within a few hundred feet. I'd suggest asking Sprint for one. I also heard you can use them as an upgrade line when you want a new phone. Lol

I can tell you why your getting terrible speeds... Its the people who tether their phones to play call of duty and for their daily internet connection on the computer.
Nothing we can do about it until sprint terminates some contracts early for violating the terms of service and refusal to comply.

You can check the following thread, see if tweaking your system settings can help you out :

You can just download the file to SD Card and flash it in CWM ... very easy.

Lol seems like everyone's having a bad time with them ill try asking for one of those airave things but will they charge me out the ass for it?
EDIT: Just tried that flashable cwm file and it helped a little combined with a proxy tweak I'm getting around 20-50kb now

Well I don't see how they can play call of duty with 3g lmao but I do see the point about using it as a permanent internet connection I guess I have to wait for sprint to get 4g out here but that probly wont be for a while

Hello,
I have been around for a while, since my htc hero. And I've trusted xda to fix the many issues that manufacturers leave in. However the are a few issues with my new Galaxy S III that are driving me mad and if I can't fix them I may have to return it.
So far my speed is terrible. My 3g speed is half that of my wife's Epic touch. My 4g speeds are fine but will randomly switch to 3g (and with lte there is no refresh button like wimax, so I have to use airplane mode). And 4g is slower than 3g when I try to download from the play store but fine in the browser.
If anyone can help that would be great. I can't search all that well from the app and I am on stock tw 4.1 just rooted. I already fix all of the prl updates and stuff.
Also sometimes a green checkmark appears in my notification bar and says preparing network.
Other than this annoying network issue I really like this phone. I would hate to have to return it for the lg optimus G

I had that same problem....I was averaging .8-1.3mbps. Its not the phone its the location your in. Finally sprint turned on lte tower 14 in roanoke tx. Data faster than home internet.

Your wife's phone us on wimax yours is on lte. What you explained sounds like lte towers are being worked on and upgraded near you. Lack of signal going into and out I went through that for about 4 weeks then lte lite up perfectly after that.

I recently rooted my GS3 and i have been trying to figure out how to force 3g service on it any help? since i can only pick up 4g in certain areas im tired of the EDGE 2G.
Im pretty sure you cant, seeing as hspa+ is still technically 3G or WCDMA. So I think your stuck with Edge for now... Until T-Mobile does more service upgrades in your area... Don't worry, I get crappy service wherever I go, and I have the worst service here at home... Should have went with Sprint...

You could try, but AT&T uses the same thing "HSPA+" which is really 3G, but they still call it 4G, and that's what would show up on your status bar (it would still say 4G), so I don't know if that'll work... You can give it a try though. I'm actually going try it our right now, and see how it works. I'll keep you posted. :good:
Have that issue too and don't count on them upgrading anything anytime soon. Just wait till your contract is up and make that switch

I guess you can take the 4G plan off your phone and be throttled down to 3G speed... That's it.
Anyone what phone seems to not want to perform well with anything that requires the use of data when 3G kicks in. Either it's incredibly slow or stalls
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
It could just be bad signal. Is this something new or has it always does that. You where very vague in your question.

I guess I can say 3G seems to not work when active. As if my phone rejects usage of it unless it's on Wi-Fi or 4G
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
It may just be that when you are on 3G, it is poor signal. You can try updating PRL / Profile to see if it helps. Also the data speed difference between 3G, or 4G LTE / WiFi is usually fairly extreme. Which makes it seem like it is not working properly, if at all.
