Hi guys,
I'm new to the Samsung Epic 4g and looking for the most stable ROM that's available. Here's why:
This phone does not belong to me. I dated this girl for a few months and before I broke up with her, I told her she should let me root her phone. She did (we put on the ACS Frozen ROM) and she loved it, until a few weeks later it started giving her "Google Services Frameworks" Force closing errors.
Problem was, we had broken up. Because she doesn't know anyone else that knows how to root phones and put on ROMs, she has very awkwardly called me up every few weeks and asked me to fix her phone—because her phone is my responsibility now!
What I'm looking for is the ROM that won't have any FC's and that I won't have to touch for at least another six months. Her stock ROM was no good either (which is why she wanted me to root the phone), fwiw.
I have a Mac and tried the Heimdall method but that didn't seem to work. Basically, I want to be done messing with her phone so I don't have to hang see her again! It was a bad breakup.
Any advice greatly appreciated! I need to flash by tonight.
Re flash and turn journaling on. Should keep her away for a while

Honestly if you broke up and don't want to deal with it just go to stock. Otherwise you are on the hook forever. When gb goes ota guess who she calls. Just put it back to stock.

This^^^^^^^^ and go to settings>applications>manage applications>all and scroll to Google Services Framework, click it and hit clear data. Show this to her and tell her any app that FCs can be fixed this way and walk away. Unless you want to also teach her how to do a nand backup and restore to really be able to walk away.

Thanks guys. I actually ended up bricking the phone with Heimdall-the USB port on my IMac couldn't recognize the phone and all hell broke loose after that-so she and I are splitting the cost of a Nexus S.
At least I have her off my back now. Thanks again for the advice.

I am 50/50 between Urban Regeneration with Bionix Black theme and SRF 1.2 with Honeycomb Fusion Explosion. I have a nandroid of each to switch back and forth. Both have been very stable, great battery, and fast. Any errors I have had were my own fault from adding/deleting things.

Hi, everyone please dont flame me if this answer is somewhere else but i tried searching and using keywords to find an answer but no dice! feel free to move this to the where ever it needs to be!
ok ive been having tons of fun with my epic and this site has been a god send ever since i found it! great community guys! but now to the prob...
i never had a problem with rooting my epic and adding roms, themes, dk28, etc. but last night i decided to flash a hulu zip but i was careless and realized it wasnt "edify" and flashed it, yea i know epic fail :/...ever since then my epic hasnt been the same. i tried going back to dk27 and from playing with it for 10mins it seemed stable and fine. so i decided to odin to dk28 and it seemed alright but maybe its because im used to the faster roms ive been using for the past months. now the real problem is when im running on dk28 and try to flash midnight rom or bonsai (the only 2 i tested so far) it never works..after i run cwm3 and flash midnight i try to reboot and i get stuck at the samsung screen. so i pull the battery out and try again...now when it boots up, it does the reg sprint start up but the word "android" is flashing in the middle of the screen at the same time!? and doesnt perforom right if i touch any of the dock buttons it just restarts. so as of right now im just running a stock epic and it works fine but i really wanna root my epic again and have fun!
Well....
That flashing android sign may have just been some sort of file corruption...possibly in the odin flash, possibly from pulling the battery.
You said you went back to dk27 first...did you mean dG 27? Just for clarification.
I would try odining to di18 and THEN going to dk28 and then to a ROM (if you haven't already tried that going from di18)
And retrying until successful isn't such a bad idea...did you purchase a better USB cable, or are you using the stock one? the stock one has been known to cause problems when flashing
Sent from my baked and emotionless SPH-D700
hey, thnx for the reply. yea i mean dg27 sorry. hmm yea ive been having a lot of problems with this cable, my cpu recognizes it about 50% of the time i always have to keep trying diff ports...ill try to find another cable around the house. will any mini usb cable do? oh yea and u said the "flashing android" could be from odin, so could it be the pit or the tar file?
btw is di18 still floating around on the forums? ill try to look..thanks again bro
Flash it again when your getting that android symbol in the middle of sprints boot screen. Right over it. Works for me and I get that problem every once in a while
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
thnx coke32 ill keep trying to flash it..keeping my fingers crossed
I would use Odin and the DI18 release then use the update.zip for DK28. Then use the Clockworkmod 3.0 root. Then use one of those Roms you like so much. I use midNIGHT and love it. There are some great walk throughs in the Development Section.
If you run into problems just start over. Only takes about 20 minutes. The cable is a biggie though. Any USB mini works...as long as it "works". I never use the stock cable unless I'm charging only.

Does anyone have the new sprint security app as a .apk? I am currently running Myn's z port and sprint will not recognize my phone as an Evo. I do know I could just flash back to a different Evo rom and download it, back it up, and nandroid back to where I was at but that is a pain in the ***! I am sure if some one where to post it, there would be many appreciative people!
I do not believe this to be a repeat post for I did search before posting but you never know.....you know!

Thanks So much. It is really appreciated!
Will this work for people without the Total Equipment Protection service? I doubt it, but I have Where's My Droid to help me find my phone and it lets you set a pass code on it.
According to the web site it will not. But i believe they give you a month free trial if you want to give it a shot!
For those who came into this thread that don't have TEP, be sure to check out Plan B. It's an easy way to locate your phone without ever installing any software before you lose your phone. It essentially pushes the app to your phone and upon install it notifies you of its location.
Sounds like a good alternative.....is this available on the market?

What does this app do?
It has some basic security features such as remote wipe, find phone, and force alarm on full volume. It also had a contact backup feature and web service to find closest repair center. You can also start tep claim...
Which doesn't make sense....if you are trying to start a claim your phone is probably already boned
Remember it free if you have tep. If not, be aware.

Hello all I have been using RandomRom hawk eg22 v2 it is smooth except the gps. The gps works for about 10 minutes , after that it goes to searching for gps. The only way to get the gps back is to restart the gps navigation app. I am sure it is something that I haven't done, like reset cache for the gps or something. I am coming from randomrom hawk eg22 v1

No I can try that. Thanks for the response. Last time I tried to flash a different modem my phone was almost bricked. It was the eg22 modem. The modem went through with no problem but my phone would not turn back on. Which odin do you recommend to use? I figured out where I went wrong last time I flashed a new modem , I put the modem file in the pda instead of the phone spot. I flashed eh06 and will try. Thanks

Have you checked out this thread:
How to clear Modem Memory(nvram). (fixes gps and many modem issues like slow speed)

Make sure you read everything to understand what it does and the ramifications of trying that procedure.
Course you can always go back to EC05, GB is still in beta so everything isn't perfect quite yet (though Random has done a fantastic job with it so far!!)

Have you tried running superfreeze??
Try to limit the apps in memory while using GPS; perhaps turn off blue tooth, stop all sync'g. Just to see if maybe something running is hammering GPS after a while.
That is the line I would take; to make sure there is as much memory as possible for it to run.
I know that has to be really frustrating.

Awesome !!
note: while running superfreeze, if you go into settings, about phone, then try to open system updates, it will FC. that is normal because superfreeze has stopped the updates checker from running.
simply run superdefrost, do your update check (PRL or Profile) and then refreeze.
happy GPS'g

I am using RandomROM Hawk v2. I don't use my GPS that much really; I work from home and mainly drive my chair from room to room so its hard to get lost that way ... hehe
GB leaks have memory leaks, just no getting around it right now.
My fav EC05 ROM was midNight 5.3; there is a ERA Rom based off midNight (I haven't used it; I was looking at it but my battery life has improved a great deal this weekend to where it is liveable)
If you want to use midNight 5.3 I can give you a special GPS fix that was done for it that REALLY worked well; I was a tester for it and man it made a huge difference.
Just PM me if you'd like to go that route.
I'd like to know if it's safe to start breaking into it. I know rooting won't hurt it, but what about custom ROMs, or even updating to Gingerbread? I don't want to mess up the current settings that have been applied for the phone to work on nTelos.
Running Froyo 2.2.1 EC05
Baseband version S700.0.55.EC05
Actually if you stay on stock modded roms meaning you stay away from CM7 or any other AOSP ROM then you'll be fine I however have no idea to prove this but have only seen people on cricket and boost mobile have problems only on aosp roms never any stock roms
If you need the latest stock rom ill be happy to help you odin it and root it as well let me know if you have any other questions.

Ok...got another question. I keep randomly getting the "Error 67: Registration error. Your Sprint data service username and/or password may be incorrect. Please try again"
Since I'm not on a Sprint plan, is there an apk or file I can delete to get rid of this thing? It's driving me freakin' insane!
Also, I was flipping through the phone and found this: W_RF_AUTH. What the hell is it? The permissions on it are sketchy as hell, do not want. OK to delete???
Ususal rule of thumb, if you don't know what it is don't delete it... freeze it with titanium backup and if strange things begin to happen then unfreeze... iif not its probably safe to delete...

Have you googled anything to get rid of it? What is error 67 anyways?
For error 67, and this applies to most sprint phones that use Vision, Powervision, EVDO, Etc. Error 67 indicates that the username or password stored in your phone is incorrect. this condition is very rarely related to the coverage in an area, usually occurs after recent device swap, or attempting to use modem/hotspot while your account does not have a valid modem/hotspot plan.
Before going through too much effort, you should power your phone off, then back on, update your profile (this varies by model support.sprint.com has guides for most phones) and determine that the feature that you are attempting to use should work ( for example to use hotspot, you must be subscribed to hotspot. to use phone's web browser the web service should not be blocked, Etc.) if you still have trouble with error 67 after following this information please feel free to send me a private message.
When I odined el30 I don't think I had you flash the latest el30 modem delta so flash this : http://db.tt/oL0nSl3s
Then do the profile update as well as the prl update and reboot and see if your phone stops displaying the error 67

So I have issues with my GPS.
Not that this is surprising, but I am trying to plan my next step.
I am running Calk's EL29 ROM, and have pretty much gone though every fix I can find in the ET4G section, all to no avail.
So, I was planning to wipe everything back to stock, see if worked, and when it didnt, take it in for repair/replacement
I have a jig to reset the ODIN count
I also have all I need to reset it back to EL29, but I wanted to know if anyone had a "best guess" as how much longer I would have to wait for the next OTA.
My GF loves her current setup, and has "agreed" to let me wipe and redo everything once the ICS OTA comes out, so I was was gonna try to time the wipe and submit for service around that time frame, but couldnt get a real idea of how much longer the wait will be. I really dont want to have to redo everything twice if I can avoid it. (once for the replacement, and again for the ICS OTA upgrade)
Any guesses? Weeks? Months?
If it is looking to be a matter of weeks, I might as well wait, if it is gonna be a matter of months, I will just go ahead and reset back to EL29 and take it in.
So, any advice from the the group???
Honestly, I don't think anyone here knows for sure and if they did it would of been posted already. Now you can get speculation but an exact date I don't think is happening. You can try and call Sprint or check every blog out there in hopes of finding some info.
If your phone is acting up just take it right in and try and replace it. I have heard of plenty of members bringing their phone into Sprint and exchanging it. Make a couple of customer service calls complaining and go for it

Have you tried a full reset and reprogramming of the phone yet? This procedure is independent of the rom and flashing a new rom will not affect it. I just posted it here:

It probably wouldn't hurt to one-click odin back on stock EL29 Gingerbread so you can't blame the rom or modem you're on at the moment too!

Perhaps I am just gonna have to bite the bullet, reset back to stock EL29, and go from there, again, though I just am leaning more and more towards hardware over software being the issue.

I was having GPS issues too, until a found a video on youtube called "How to get working GPS on any ICS Rom." by qbking77. U have to be on a GB-based Rom to start it, so I don't think it'll be a problem for u. It's a lil time-consuming, but it works & I'm on Blu Kuban ICS Rom! Good luck
