Problem with USB connection - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone is always loosing connection USB connection to my PC after 3 or 4 times...then I need to reinstall the drivers. My PC finds the phone but the "USB connection" pop up on the phone doesn't appear...it's like that for a few weeks now, before that it always workd fine...
PC is Windows 7. Phone is HTC desire. "Question" is enabled, standard is "just loading". I changed the USUB cable already, that was not the fault. PC is recognizing the HTC Desire as "Android Phone", that works ALWAYS. I just can't access the SD-Card from my phone because the phone pop up is missing. Setting the "mount as HDD" doesn't help either. The phone is loading though.

In Windows 7 have you tried locating the SD Card (usually F:/ Drive) in Windows Explorer? Sometimes, depending on settings, the pop up window may not appear (you may have accidentally selected a default action for it, for example).
EDITED: I'm guessing you have debugging selected if the PC is recognising the phone so, just a thought, have you tried putting the SD Card in a reader to see if the PC can recognise it at all?

No, debugging is not activated. With "pop up" I was referring to the missing "pop up" (in the status bar) on the phone, not in the PC, sorry for that. I just found something out however: Plugged in the phone, same as ever, it's loading but no USB connection detected on the phone side. Restarted the phone WHILE it's still plugged in and directly after the restart the "ask me" notification pops up. Mounted the SD card and it works...

Activate usb debugging.
Swyped from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App

I did. Currently it's working, but that's just a workaround, not a fix, isn't it?

There is no disadvantage in activating usb debugging (At least, I do not know anyone), so I think one could call it a "fix".

It's not a fix because it's not working anymore...again! It shows USB DEBUGGING CONNECTED in the status bar but the "ask me" notification isn't coming so I can't mount it as HDD. Man, that's getting real annyoing...
After a restart of the phone while it's connected it's working again..."ask me" popping up right after launch. -.-

Cannot charge and play music at the same time

This can't be right.
I am playing music and plug the desire into my work pc to charge at the same time and it tells me it can't because the SD card is being used for data storage. I have checked the connection type. The flag comes up offering options and I chose Charge Only. It even says that on the statusbar. But it refuses to play. Can someone try on theirs?
PS
Same happens via my laptop. Play music, then insert USB; flag comes up "choose a connection type" - choose "charge only"; it shows on status bar; the music stops message says "SD Card is unavailable because it is being used as USB storage." No SD/USB management app is installed to interfere unless Astro does.
PPS
Astro uninstalled, makes no difference. Please someone try to do the same and let me know what happens.
PPPS Manual says
Disk drive
This mode is available only when you have installed a microSD card on your phone. Select this mode when you want to use your storage card as a USB thumb drive, and copy files between your phone’s storage card and your computer. When Disk Drive mode is enabled while your phone is connected to the computer, you will not be able to run applications that use the storage card, such as Music or Photos.
But it isn't enabled!!!!
PPPPS
Is it because the PC recognises the connection as data regardless of the setting on the phone? eg the standard flag comes up on the PC and laptop. Even if I hit "no action" on it, it still refuses
Damn it. Factory reset? It also refuses to do anything if music is playing, eg won't download an app ("download paused")
What OS are you running on your PC's?
Now I am incandescent.
I backed up the apps, factory reset, and the apps I downloaded are all gone, including the ones I paid for. What gives????
Windows XP on both.
OK, I get it, apps back by installing Astro again.
Bastard is now fixed! Plugged in and plays music. But what happens when I unplug and plug in again? Here goes...
It works!
What a palaver
Got all the apps back except the one that cleans caches - can anyone remind me of the name please?
You can set up your Desire on how to act when you plug it into the USB port:
- Charge only
- HTC Sync
- Disk drive
- Internet sharing
I guess yours was set to be Disk drive by default...
No it wasn't. I checked, had selected charge only when offered the option and the status bar said charge only. Just a weird glitch I guess.
I am on T-Mobile UK and ever since an update was sent out about a month ago each time I plug my phone into the computer using USB it automatically connects as a hard disk. The default setting is for Charge Only.
The only way in which I can get it back to charge only is to move in the menu to something else and then move back to charge only....I then get the preparing SD card message.
Anyone else had the same issue....Anyone got a fix?
Cheers
Aidan
This happens to me all the time, just swipe down the notification bar and press the connection type option, choose Charge Only again and tap Done from the list and it will make the SD card available. For some reason even if you select charge only when you're first asked the SD card automatically becomes locked out.
Glad someone else is having the issue. Really looking to find out how to fix this. It causes me issues as it makes the SD card inaccessible and if the phone rings then my ringtone changes back to a default one...
I tend to use my laptop to charge my phone and each time I the phone use it I need to remember to click down though the usb menu.

Connect To Pc

Hi all. Have recently discovered my "Connect to PC" function has stopped working on my Desire. The default connection type is set to "disk drive" and the "ask me" (everytime I connect phone to PC) is selected. When I now connect I dont get asked, and the disk drive function doesnt work. In fact, it doesnt matter what dafault setting I use as they all do the same thing, i.e only charge the phone. Have tried to connect on both my laptops (that both had previously worked), but neither now work. Tried power cycling the device but this hasnt had the "desired" effect.
Anyone else had this problem or am I just being/doing stupid. Its my first post so go easy chaps .
thanks
I have exactly the same problem, I cannot connect to PC. The PC must register it connecting and disconnecting as it 'pings' but nothing showing under My Comp and nothing appearing on the Desire; tried all the Connect to PC options but no joy. It charges okay via the PC but nothing else..
Help anyone?? Huge thanks,
Gareth
I had the same problem but I managed to fix it by uninstalling the drives for desire in device manager.
hope this works for u.

How to plug and pray with desktop

Is there a way to ply the TP2 into a desktop USB running XP and have the ability to access the storage card or the device? Do not want to Install Active Sync. Maybe just want to copy some files or something without having to remove the storage card.
If you plug the device into your computer, you should see a selection screen that gives you the option for ActiveSync, Disk Drive, and Internet Sharing. Simply choose the second option and the MicroSD card will be mounted in Windows as a removable disk. If this dialog does not pop up, go to Start>Settings>Connections>USB to PC and choose the Disk Drive mode. The only limitation of this is that your PC can only access the MicroSD (not the internal NAND), and the device cannot access the MicroSD while it is mounted in Windows. However, file transfers will be noticably faster than with ActiveSync, and ActiveSync will not actually be needed to access the device. HTH
......Amen
Thanks. I had forgotten about the USB Connections settings and I had it set to always ActiveSync. Changed it to "ask" and I can access the storage card. Would love to look at the file on the device, but guess you need activesync or some software on the desktop for that. thanks again.

You meant to say "Plug and Pray" instead of "Plug and Play"?
I've tried checking and unchecking the ask option, but I do not get the popup when I plug in my usb cable. I can't activeSync. The only hints that the computer even recognizes it is the ding of plugging it in/out and "PocketPC USB Sync" shows up under Mobile Devices in device manager.
EDIT: I can get it to work as Disk Drive, just not as ActiveSync.

do you have activesync (windows mobile device center?? for vista) software installed on you desktop?
i run xp and have activesync 4.5 on my desktop. i had problems but then noticed my mini usb cable was not secure. i have my device set to charge when connected usb and the charge light was not always amber. found a better cable and used a different usb on my computer (the problem was with the connection to the desktop). that has fixed all my activesync problems.
but i have had problems in the past with the dialog box not popping upasking if i want active sync or disk drive. some people say there tp2 has a third option os internet sharing, mine does not. try a soft reset, check the cable, uninstallin and reinstall the desktop software and see what happens. oh yeah, what are your setting under activesync on your device, in programs?

Which OS are you using?
Also, there is a setting in the communications setup - USB to make the Activesync connection slow or fast. Try the slow setting.

at some point when you plugged in your device, did you happen to select the option that says "never ask again" if so, you will get no notification that it's plugged in. Active sync page wont even open. That's how I got mine set up 'cause I got tired of always having to select whether I want to do Active sync or disk drive.

Unable to connect phone to computer

Hi everyone
For the last couple of days I've been having trouble with getting my computer to recognize my phone. When I connect it, the usual red/orange LED starts glowing, but there's no reaction from the computer. Neither does the phone show any signs of having connected. The usual "choose which connection type you want box" doesn't pop up, and there really aren't any signs of having connected, other than the charging LED.
I've tried reinstalling Windows Mobile Device Center, tried switching cables, I've checked the connection settings on the phone, but can't find any irregularities there, so I'm a bit lost here. Do you have any thoughts?
For the record, I have a Rhod100 and I'm using Win7 64-bit, as well as Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit.
Have you unchecked the faster connection?
Start > Settings > Connections > USB to PC. Uncheck the enable faster connection. My win7x64 didn't wanna connect until I did that.
By "the faster connection" you mean the Storage Card mode right? If that's what you mean, then yes, I have unchecked it.
I have chosen the ActiveSync option, and have also enabled the option to always ask which connection type I want upon connection, however the box never pops up :/
Thanks for your reply

Activesync is the one that uses faster data sync, not storage card.
I know that the USB has a problem of going out for some people, so it could be an issue with that....have you tried to connect via bluetooth??

If the box isn't popping up, there is a problem with the USB connection try a different cable; if that doesn't work, take a magnifying glass and examine the phone USB connector - them may be some bent pins in the connector. If so, GENTLY straighten them out.
ActiveSync is picky anyways even if you have a good usb connection. On my xp compuer, if I want to connect without doing the setup (which I usually do, if I dont then it forces a push email account onto my phone if I sync), I have to hit the connect button in the activesync window. It flashes roms flawlessly, but disconnects often while file browsing. On my dads vista pc, it browses files perfectly but I have tried everything possible but cannot flash from it using wmdc. I would definitely try it on a different computer if I were you, your computer might just be acting funny
I just had the same problem and i tried all the fancy things you people are talking about. Its a manufacturing fault and needs warranty replacement of the board.noting else will work.

start the phone up in bootloader mode (powering on the phone with the volume -down pushed). The tricolor screen should come up with the word "serial" in blue in the white area. Then plug in the USB connector, that will tell yuou if your port is really bad. If not it will change "serial" to "USB"
Still if you haven't flashed it then send the thing in now, HTC honors warranties based on serial numbers so you don't have to deal with tmobile, but only if your phone is NOT hardspl'd or flashed with a third party custom ROM
I had the same problem on an htc diamond. It needed to go back and have the board replaced.
The fault is caused by connecting the phone to an in car charger and then starting the engine.
Took a while to happen.

[Q] WMDC connection to Win 7 x64

I have a HTC Touch Pro 2 (US Cellular) and trying to connect via USB to Windows 7 Ultimate x64 OS. I have several times to install, uninstall, re-install and still no go. I found a few posting searching Google and nothing specific has help.
When plugging in cable, the phone is recharging. Unable to recognize or show up in Device Manager. I have successfully connect phone to PC by using Bluetooth but not able too at all with the USB cable. Tried several other cables and still same issues of not connecting.
I am sure it has something to do with drivers. however can't find any specific driver for the OS and Phone.
I have tried other combinations such as other USB ports, unchecking the box "Enable faster data synchronization" Reinstalling WMDC 6.1, uninstalling, rebooting, hard-reset, soft reset, etc.
So I am at the point of just throwing the phone across the room. I seem to recall about having problem another time and same issues, but was able to find solution. Unfortunately, not able to now. Please HELP!!

First, I edited your email out. That will surely get picked up by spambots, and you'll have a LOT of spam in your inbox.
Second, when you plug it in, you should see a popup on the phone in WinMo. Should give you a few choices, depending on ROM - choose "ActiveSync". If you don't get these choices, simply unplug-replug.
If you set it to "always" do something - like USB mass storage mode or something, you might have to modify the registry. I haven't used WinMo in so long, I don't even remember how to get it back to that menu which gives you the choices... I never check that box anyways, I always want to choose.
Thanks
Thanks for the email protection.

It's on the phone.
Did you unplug/replug? If it doesn't pop up for me at first, I do this and it ALWAYS pops up...
UNLESS of course you've told it to "always" do something like USB mass storage - this is the piece I cannot remember how to setup...
What ROM are you on?

Go to the Settings Tab in HTC Sense and click on the right softkey and select All Settings. Then select Communications and select USB to PC and check the box that says ask me what I want to do when I connect.
