So I'm interested in getting started with development on android, but not really apps for now. I would really like to make my own ROM, and learn more about rooting and finding exploits for rooting. I've looked around, but really haven't been able to find anything on these subjects, especially rooting. I would love to get involved on working towards a root for the evo but I have no clue where to begin. Can someone point me in the right direction?
you can start by posting in the correct forums
just a heads up

I dont know about rooting, but for development, you can start by reading up on java, and learn to use Dsixda's kitchen for basic development, also try to learn from other roms.
Dsixda's kitchen does not make you a developer. It makes you someone who can push buttons and repackage HTC's hardwork.
And yes, there's a forum for this, and this isn't it.

I tried the Q&A and didnt get responses, and I'd really like to work specifically with the EVO because that's the phone i have for testing, so i was trying to find someone else who works with the EVO. Thanks for all the help though
/sarcasm
I don't know where to start about developing but i found this amazing guide to theming. It kinda opened the doors for me.

the funniest part, is that he actually created a new thread for this to try.
Christ, are there any mods left keeping an eye on this forum? The repetition of inane and redundant questions combined with all of the trolls in here lately is growing very tiresome. Commenting in this type of thread is normally against my ways, but if someone starts a thread in the wrong section and someone has already told the OP where the appropriate place for their topic is, ignore the thread and move on. Ragging out a newbie for doing newbie things just makes the XDA community as a whole look like a bunch of asshats. Offer some useful information with a little courtesy so the newest members learn something. Help our community grow by teaching, rather than shrink it by tearing people down. And no, sarcasm and criticism are not effective teaching methods.

Hello proud SGS-owners!
(Beware, wall-of-text)
I've been lurking around the xda forums since I got my first Android phone (Hero). Now that I've gotten myself an SGS I've "moved" from the Hero forums to the SGS forums. My first impression was that the SGS forum community is far behind that of the Hero community, which is understandable considering that SGS is a much newer phone and doesn't have as many users (yet).
I never felt that I had anything to contribute to the Hero community because it was already flourishing when I came there. I'd like to help the SGS community to move forward and reach that same level, and hopefully beyond. The SGS have the potential to be the real (iPhone?!) kick-ass phone we've all been waiting for, so why not have a kick-ass community?
It took me hours, scouring the threads, to learn how to safely flash and root my phone, but it was well worth it. The problem is, most people don't have the same patience or time to do so. So, for starters. How about we combine our shared knowledge and put up a post that will hold all the necessary info on all current FWs, basic info on how you flash, root, what odin is, how-to's and not-to-do's, and so forth.
All of this can and should also be put in the wiki, but I believe we also need a thread for it here or many people will miss out on the info. Perhaps something in between, the best of two worlds? Right now the SGS wiki is really lacking...
Any ideas or opinions? I'm all ears and open for discussion
To the mods: You can move this thread to general if you think it's out of context. However, this is first and foremost targeted at the dev-community so I think it should be left here.
Best regards,
Marcus

Great idea to collect as many information as possible. But there's a already a thread for this: the big faq thread.
I like your intiative though. And yes, it would be very nice to have an updated wiki.
BTW, for the general section it would be nice to have a sticky tips and tricks thread, like the one tboy2000 created for the HTC HD2. We need someone though that will maintain that post.

I surely does ... But i don't believe it can be done.
BTW that would be a nice tip for XDA-dev forum developers: create an option to let multiple (selected?) users colaborate and edit one opening post. But then again, that would be almost be the same functionality as a wiki
I agree with the op, the faq thread is good but this forum could really use a 'getting started' thread for people that just got their phone. And it should be in the general forum instead of development.
Can we make one thread of all the mods to the stock 3.70.651.1 ? I would like to try my hand at making a kick ass rom but it seems that with all the updates and leaks and ports, Half the time of building it will be figuring out what will work. Please give credit to the DEV that created the mod. I'll try to keep this post updated at the top if this turn out to be a good idea. If you don't think its a good idea please tell me in a PM. No need in cluttering this thread up.

honestly if you need help locating all the things that are "broke" because "Half the time of building [your rom] will be figuring out what will work," it's not a development of a rom at all.. it's just "thinking" about it. probably more suited for q/a or general
you basically want people to do half your work, which you haven't even started yet

We don't really know what you're trying to do...but my question would be why do you need a thread with all the mods and roms and whatever for 3.70, when you could just find them yourself...Not trying to hate, but I'm just saying...
WOW first 3 post all about how its a bad idea. no wonder this place is so dis organized. **** IT!
All I wanted was one thread with all the mods that are built on the 3.70 build. Is there one organized thread like this? NO. Why do yall give everybody such a hard time everytime someone comes up with an idea? If a dev (I"M no DEV) wanted to build a kick ass rom, wouldn't it be nice to have one thread to goto to get the different pieces? Wouldn't it be nice to have a stock ROM to start with and mod it like you want to without having to flash a ROM that may not have everything you wish for or has stuff you dont like?
Want animations? flash this? Want this cool rosie? flash this?....
We did this with the moment and I loved it.
I'm not going to build the Rom, I was just going to maintain the thread by keeping the stuff at the top.
wrong section
The point is, if you want to create a thread to do this, create a thread to do this, not a thread asking people to do this for you. That is why people are being uppity about it.
And yeah, something like this should go into the Themes/Apps or General section. It'll get lost in here.
As far as the thread, I'd definitely like to see something like this come out. It'd be really handy. Once you start the list, like-minded people will be drawn in and will definitely help you out!

Thanks Jason, Tell ya what. I don't think that themes and apps has anything to do with it but I'll give your idea a shot. Judging by the people that have posted so far I'll probably get the same response. Hope I can be proven wrong. By the way,,, for all the wrong forum post,,, Im pretty sure i said PM me and my inbox is empty. kettle meet pot.
I do agree with people being a little uptight about everything and flaming any person they possibly can. I do see what you are trying to do. I had an experience with a ROM made by someone in the g1 thread like a year ago, it was a stock ROM with a modded spare parts to install the mods you want and only the ones you want. but what you are saying is a good idea. Like in other forums they are calling it a directory with everything all in one place, for example http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=771111
edit: maybe people are like this because of their learning experience when they got started? they got flamed for asking a noob question so now any time people ask the same question they do it? I think this is the main reason people are staying away from XDA or simply not saying thanks or anything at all. XDA is an awesome place to get info but defiantly not the place to ask for help or get an answer to a question.

So knowing those three things is going to make you a dev?
1. http://bit.ly/dGelUt
2. http://bit.ly/fWKXcB
3. http://bit.ly/eTznEb
All of which a google search would have helped you out. This is development section so I understand why you posted this here. But I think you should take a step back since given those three questions could have been found out on your own, shows you have no self motivation yet. Development is a community effort I agree, but there isn't much hand holding. Posting this only showed that your looking for someone to do it for you. That isn't the way to go.

And yes, this should have been posted in Q&A

Then maybe he will next time direct his "lazy" questions to the Q&A. Sorry I'm a blunt person. If you want you can look through the 3000 pages on the compile GB thread I posted and look at the tons of advice I give. You can also see me tell people the truth, some people don't like it. good luck.
I see people using different kernels with different roms. Why so many kernels and whats their use?
Kernels basically run the back end of your phone. A lot of people make different/ update the kernels because they find a different way to improve battery life and make the phone run smoother and faster. Also, SBC kernels implement trickle charging which makes it so your phone is at or near a 100% when you take it off the charger
This question belongs in the Q&A section, not in the development section.
it posts in the correct section for starters....or does some research as this question has been asked a million times already
Looks like XDA needs to make a 20 post min now.

Hey all,
Just curious - are there any tutorials anywhere that walk you through building your own ROM for the EVO from the AOSP project? I'd like to get into building my own so that I don't have to rely on other's updates, etc.

I continue to come up with bull**** posts about building AOSP for other phones. I've searched all morning and haven't come up with anything, hence, the creation of the thread. Thanks for attempting to be a smartass, though.

Seriously? Does everyone need to include the line, "I've already tried searching." in the original post so that an absolutely unnecessary and obvious answer isn't the first one posted? If so, then..
I've already tried searching.

Actually yes, it would help that we know you've already searched. Forgive me for seeing that the vast majority of people who post questions do so without searching and not knowing that you, miraculously, were not amongst said majority. Thanks for succeeding at being an ungrateful prick.
And just an FYI, seeing as how you apparently have no experience on the topic, at least that's what your poorly specified post implied, you would be able to learn a lot about the process of creating your own ROM from the search results I posted. Just because it doesn't say "HTC Evo" on it doesn't mean there is no experience or wisdom to be gained from it. Try doing what the rest of us do. Read what resources are available and then start experimenting with it until you can find someone who can give more specific direction. There will be difference between phones but you can still get the basis for working with Android based systems. Otherwise, we'll be seeing another thread like this from you when you get a new phone. I tried to help as best I could. I'm sorry it wasn't to your satisfaction.

It was actually far from being satisfactory. Forgive me, but why in the holy hell would I learn to develop for a phone that I don't have? Honestly. Once the source is built and created, what am I going to do with said source? Not a damn thing. I have no phone to install it to. Building for a phone that I own would be more help to me then building for a phone that I do not own.
Maybe if most of the people around here took a second to actually help someone, there wouldn't be a problem with the vast majority of smart asses replying with a search link. Don't try and convince yourself that you're being helpful and expect me to say "thank you." You're far from it.
Search for dsixda rom kitchen. That will help you get started.

You're right. All Android phones run on the Linux based Android operating system. So what on earth could you possibly learn from a thread about a phone that uses the same operating system? Like I said, the phones each have some differences but the overall basis of how the system works is the same. So yes, the threads I posted are helpful. They contain enough information to get you started in the right direction until you can find information that reviews the specific differences that you can then apply to the Evo. If you could get over yourself for a minute or two in order to open your mind you'd be able to realize that. You're the one that came here with questions. Seems kind of naive to pick and choose which answer you want to hear and then whine about the ones you don't understand.
Either way, I gave you something helpful. It's up to you whether or not you choose to use it. Best of luck to you.
Edit: People on this site, myself included, do nothing but help each other. If you can't see that then the problem is not with this site. The problem is with you.

I have been wondering this same question as I pondered to develop my own ROM, this link was actually helpful. Sometimes people overlook things and its helpful to get a second opinion, which is why I believe this entire Q&A thread exists. So it is puzzling to me why would come here to get a second opinion and then ***** out the first person to try to help.
I just can't understand why you ask for help and then criticize help... And this is why XDA needs a "Negative Thanks" button.

The only problem with a negative thanks button is that people like UndeadCircus would be pressing negative thanks all the time because they didn't like, or don't understand, the answer they were given. People are a lot more willing to toss out negativity than they are optimism and gratitude. In the end I see it like this; My responsibility here is to help others to the best of my ability. People can either be open minded to the help given here and see all the opportunities laid before them or they can remain closed minded and in the end not gain as much knowledge as they otherwise would have. Either way, I've done my job and the decision on whether or not to take advantage of it is on them.
@OP
There are two threads in evo development about your question.
