Long press on the file you want to move and the options come up to move, copy, paste...etc. There will be tabs at the bottom that say paste after you do this. Then go to the directory you want to paste it and hit the tab. If the directory isn't writable it will tell you then change it at the top.

Long-press the apk. It will give a list of options. You can move or copy. You'll get paste or cancel at the bottom of your screen. When you get to system/app press r/w at the top of screen to go into write mode and then paste. Click r/o at the top to go back into read mode. Back out of root explorer and turn your phone off and then on to let the magic happen.

Question...can I open a rar file on my phone? I tried renaming it to a zip but when I extracted it there was nothing in the file
You should be able to with most file manager apps like astro or androzip.
Astro has the option but rarely works for me... maybe it's just my phone XD
That happened to me once. But on my nexus and I was playing around with ninja morph. Anywho I was running cm so I just reflashed it without wiping or anything with the same rom I was using and it put the browser back for me and didn't messing with the settings or apps. Maybe you could give that a try if worst comes to worse. Just if you have a theme you will prolly have to reflash the theme also. Hope you get it working though!

If I long press on the files I get an option for permissions. I can then select read-write options and then ok. But when I go back into permissions, they have reverted to their original state.
EDIT: Ok, I finally saw what you meant and installed the files, but no app in app drawer. I have rebooted just to be sure.
Go to were the browser Is downloaded to and longpress then select copy. Then navigate to /system and at the top of the screen toggle the button that says R/O to R/W, then select app dir and hit menu then paste.

How do I get an app off my phone?

I am trying to change certain images for my XDA premium app but I cannot seem to get my version to install...
I am backing up via "My Backup Root", then placing the modified images in the drawable-hdpi folder inside the app WHILE my SD card is mounted on my computer. I am overwriting all of them (using the same names and keeping the sizes the same). And then I tried installing the modified version through ES file explorer in the my backup root folder, no dice. Then I tried installing it by restoring a backup via my Backup root, but no matter what, my XDA App will not install with the modified images. I am using 7zip to replace images.
So you need to find a way to backup a non-system application while still being able to edit it?
Have you tried going straight into data and pulling the app with ADB? Using Super Manager, Root Explorer or ES?
Hell maybe you have resign it!
If you want to send over the files I'd love to play with it.
How would I pull it using adb pull? I've got ES File Explorer, but it's a non system app.
Using root explorer goto data/app and copy the apk to sdcard. Put sdcard in your pc and pull the apk and modifie. Then install
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
In ES there is a root explorer right?
Go into settings and at the bottom are root options. Enable them.
Then click the SD button at the top left hand corner and you should see your phones root folder. Then data -> app and find the XDA application. Long press and select copy, then paste it to your SD card. it will be named something like com.somethingXDA.apk, or net.somethingXDA.apk, or even org.somethingXDA.apk.
Also try renaming your MyBackup modifyed file to its actual filename. So for example "SetCPU" to "com.mhuang.overclocking.apk" or "XDAPremiumApp" to "com.somethingXDA.apk". I know for some Swype mods you had to do that.
This is my first time using ES File explorer! And I really like it!
I don't understand, I did exactly as Mystery said, and app still not installed. For some odd reason, my edited .png files are smaller less kbs than the original APK. Does changing colors only alter data size?

You have to put it in /system/app now, because modifying the APK's contents in any way will invalidate the signature. You could also resign it, but it won't update.
Ok, I'm getting farther and farther, but how do I fix the permissions to paste it in System/App? It's a non system app, shouldn't it be copied into Data/app?

Im not sure how to do it in es , but in root explorer you long press the app and click permissions and put checks in all three of the first column and just the top one in the 2nd column and leve the rest unchecked. Its ok to put it in system/app.

I'll give Root Explorer a try.
Are you decompiling it or just opening it via 7zip and swapping images?? If you aren't decompiling then the signature is fine to run, but not install.. just put it in /data/app.. permissions won't matter.. if you are decompiling, that's a different story.

[How to] copy and paste in CM file manager

I have seen a lot of people asking how to copy and paste in the CM file manager. It is done like this...
Select the files you want to copy by using the check boxes.
Navigate to the directory you want to copy to (your selection follows you)
Press the 'double menu' button at the bottom left of the app
Press paste selection.
Selection follows you. So if you select files in /sdcard/downloads and select 2 things, then go to /sdcard/ringtones/ and select 2 things they are all selected together. You will have 4 files in your selection and any actions you take on one you do to them all.
That's pretty much it. Hope this helped some of you.
it helped,..thank you very much,..was about to ditch the app!

Don't know what ROM you are on... your knowledge of pushing apps to /system (ie., via adb), etc., so I'm attaching the stock samsung keyboard (plain grey) with auto-correct functionality. You need to be rooted at least. Copy the attached apk to your phone... then, using your favorite root file manager (like Root Explorer, etc) copy to /system folder first... fix permissions to rw.r..r.. then, MOVE to /system/app. It will ask if you want to replace the current "SamsungIME.apk", answer yes. You should be good to go.

Those are folders/files in the flashable zip. Let's try the simpliest approach first.
1. Download "Root Explorer (File Manager) from the PlayStore, and install
2. From my post #6 above, save the attached file (SamsungIME.apk)... on your phone's sdcard
3. Open Root Explorer, and navigate to the folder on your phone (sdcard) where you put the SamsungIME.apk... long press it, then select "Copy"
4. now while still within Root Explorer, navigate to /system folder, and hit "Paste" (make sure you mount as R/W.. it's the button at the top. If you are mounted as Read Only, you'll get an error message "You cannot past here because the file system is read only". Just hit the "Mount R/W" toggle at the top of screen.
5. Now, "SamsungIME.apk" is in your /system folder. You need to fix permissions. Long press "SamsungIME.apk" and select "Permissions". There are boxes with green check marks. toggle the boxes so that you only have green check marks in: Owner: R W ; Group: R ; Others: R. Hit "OK"
6. Now, long press "SamsungIME.apk" file again, and select "Move"
7. Navigate to /system/app (you should already be in /system, so just tap the "app" folder
8. Make sure you are still mounted as "R/W", if so, tap the "Paste" key at bottom. this will put "SamsungIME.apk" in the /system/app folder
9. if you did all this correctly, you should be good to go...
Okay I tried finall got it in the right system folder like u explained I attach a picture. Its still not working. Do I just need to reboot or flash? I use goo manager.
Hope I didnt do anything wrong while moving it to app system

It appears you are not understanding some of the android basics...and that can be extremely dangerous... especially since you are rooted. From you screenshot, you show zip files in your /system folder. Per my previous post, I stated to copy "SamsungIME.apk" to /system... fix permissions... then MOVE to /system/app. Your screenshot shows zip files in your /system folder (i.e., "SamsungIME.zip"). My attachment is the apk file itself. So apparently when you downloaded, it zipped it for compression purposes. YOU NEED THE APK. I suspect it is inside that zip file.. so you'll need to know how to unzip that zip.. and get the ".apk" The APKs goes into the /system/app folder (Not /system). Try again, and get the SamsungIME.apk out of that zip... copy that apk to /system.. fix permissions... then move (not copy) to /system/app (it's a sub folder within /system). If this didn't work, you have done something wrong.
Damn I had the feeling some was wrong. So should I get that out of the system folder? How do I do that ? I cant delete or move them. Does it harm if I leave them there? Ya im trying that now how yiu explained the apk I get it . Thanks alot tho for ur patients

I use Root Explorer... if you long press the file, you get the option to delete file. Delete the ".zip" files in /system folder. Your screenshot looks like ES File Explorer (or something similar). You should be able to "select" that zip file, then delete. Go back to my Post#6 and download the APK file (SamsumgIME.apk)... do not zip it... you should be able to download file as apk. Then follow my previous instructions. Again, get the APK file (not .zip) to /system folder.... then fix permissions... then MOVE (don't copy or you will leave a copy of the apk behind in /system) to /system/app folder. System apk files belong in the app subfolder of system (/system/app). When you go to paste the apk in /system/app, you will be asked to replace existing file... replace it. Try again... report back.
Ok thanks will do that tomorow . I use es explorer yes. When I try to delete it says file cannot be deleted. Cant see any apk file I use windows 8 maybe tahts why?

Nice idea. I don't mean to be a spoil-sport, or a smart-ass.... But here goes...
Either that, or you can wear your geek glasses and do the following (root required).
1. Get Root Explorer or a similar app.
2. Browse to /data or /system or the root / or any other folder you like. But make sure you have got some free space left.
3. Mount R/W
4. Create a folder in any name you like. Let's say rktcool.
5. Put your contents in there.
6. ta da! You are done.
Now, your data is relatively more secure
If you want further security, backup Root Explorer using appSaver, or something similar, and then uninstall it. Now, the stock file managers can only browse your sdcard, and you have to install it (Root Explorer) again to be able to view your hidden files...
Pardon me OP, but I just happened to think about this one. Sorry for messing up your thread

I think the data being lost during a firmware flash is not much of an issue. It is same as an sdcard - you will always have a backup when you are going to format it.
I meant /system as an example. If that causes any problem, there are always other folders out there like /data where applications you install on your internal memory go. You could keep your files there and install apps on sdcard always.
Better still, you could partition your sdcard, and store your secret files in the second partition, so that they are not even accessible by the normal file managers!
