[Q] Recovery missing ? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am totally new to custom Rom's so please be kind!
I purchased a used Desire with Cyanogenmod-7.0.3 already in place. I wanted to use the ROM manager to install the new version, so i took the option to 'Flash Clockworkmod recovery 2.5.0.7' from ROM manager.
From ROM manager again it did a Backup of current ROM.. When i try view the 'Manage and restore backups' i can see nothing.
If i try access recovery from ROM manager, i get phone image with question mark and it reboots straight away.
If i use manual method using volume down - power and select 'recovery', i get screen with phone and exclamation mark? It have to select 'volume up' and power to reboot ok.(Android System recovery menu 2e) There is also a warning in yellow 'E:Cant open /cache/recovery/command'
Is this the recovery menu for me ? I noticed there is an option to ' Apply Sd card:update.zip' but no back up option
Everything works ok at the moment, so i am reluctant to flash the update from ROM manager as i suspect the Clockworkmod recovery is either not accessible or missing??
Details of phone are:
Bravo Unknown Ship S-ON
HBOOT- 0.75.0000
MI Crop-031d
Touch Panel--Synt0101
Radio-5.17.05.23
Mar 5 2010,21;12:15
Current software details are:
Cyanogen Mod 7.0.3
Baseband version 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23
Kernel version 2.6.37.4-cyanogenmod-82245-g7f230e8
Some help would be appreciated. I've tried searching but find the various responses a little confusing.
Also, i realise that modding may be more than i need/want. Is it easy enough to restore back to Stock (was T-Mobile originally)
All I want a nice stable daily use phone.
Thanks in advance for replies.

All you need to do is flash a new recovery since yours is non-existent or ill-functioning.
The best way of flashing recovery is through fastboot. In order for this to work your device needs to be S-OFF. You can do this by using the new Alpharev/Unrevoked tool.
Once you have S-OFF, you can use fastboot commander, to flash the recovery.
If you get into any trouble or need any further help just holla
EDIT: Sorry that won't work, I just noticed that you HBOOT Version is really old. You'd have to run a RUU to update it.. but for an inexperienced user I'd leave it for now, unless you really want to - PM me if you want help with it.

That's fantastic. I'll have a try this evening. Thanks

because your hboot is too old for revolutionary to work:
create a goldcard (THIS WILL FORMAT YOUR SDCARD), then put the attatched PB99IMG.zip in the root of your sd-card, and boot into Bootloader (power off, then hold volume down & power), it will prompt you if you'd like to update, press volume up, and it should go.
This *should* work, I tried it and it did.. might give it a go again to confirm it 100% lol.
If it doesn't work for some reason because you're S-ON, although it should since this is an official HTC Hboot (if it doesn't work because of a CID error, your goldcard doesn't work, and you need to try the goldcard process again just in case [some SD-cards don't work as a goldcard]) then you will need to run a RUU, either the correct one for your phone, or the latest WWE RUU (if your goldcard works)
Once you've done that just follow the process I posted above

[Q] What should I do? Needs Help with radio, h-boot, and s-off/s-on

I do have a working phone, rooted and running just fine. I think I may have a screwy configuration though. I'm not sure how I ended up this way, besides just being a little too careless last time I was messing with my phone. Nonetheless, I'd like to get to the latest radio, h-boot, and s-off so that I can once again start flashing new roms. I'm just not sure in what order to do these steps without bricking my phone. I don't need a detailed walk-through, just a little guidance will go a long way. I've tried to unroot my phone and just start from scratch, but I get the error "Main version is older," and I haven't been able to find out how to get past that. I tried searching the forums and tried a few things, but nothing worked and it just made me more paranoid that I'd screw my phone up completely. Sorry for all the uncertainty that follows.
Current configuration:
rooted with unrevoked* (3, I think)
s-on
hboot - 0.77.0000
radio - 2.05.00.06.11
SkyRaider Sense Rom (3.0 RC3 I believe)
Clockwork recovery* (older version, about 3-4 months ago)
Custom kernel (don't remember which)
*I rooted when the leaked OTA came out, if that gives anymore indications.
Thanks and my bad for being an idiot...
As long as you didn't load the latest OTA patch(NOV2010) you should have no problem updating your phone. Remember I can't be held responsible if something goes wrong, as always doing these steps are risky and the liability is on you.
DO A NANDROID BEFORE YOU DO ANY OF THESE STEPS, just in case..
1. Run Unrevoked Forever. Follow steps here.
You should now have S-Off
2. Go to the Market and download ROM Manager.
3. In ROM Manager click "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
This will update ClockworkMod to the latest version.
4. Download HBOOT 0.92 here.
5.Place the PB31IMG.zip file in the base of your SD card.
6. Power off phone. Hold DOWN volume and press power. HBOOT should see the file and ask if you want to update, choose update and let it do its thing.
HBOOT .92 should be installed now.
7. Delete the PB31IMG.zip from your SD card and your computer
8. Download the 2.15.00.09.01 radio here.
9. Put the new PB31IMG.zip file in the base of your SD card.
10. Power off phone. Hold DOWN volume and press power. HBOOT should see the file and ask if you want to update, choose update and let it do its thing.
You should now be fully updated and be able to install any custom ROM you want.
When ever you flash to a NEW ROM your kernel will be updated.
Hope this helps.
Thanks
Thanks ctinsley. I'll give those directions a shot and let you know when I have a fully updated phone again.
And after 1 problem, explained below, my phone is back to its kick-butt asewome self. Thanks again.
Encountered 1 Problem:
So everything ran smoothly except for the HBOOT update. It updated, but then was stuck in a HBOOT loop, and wouldn't start up. Doing my research, I came across a similar situation. Someone recommended going to advanced restore and restoring the HBOOT. I did this, and it worked for me. Rebooting in HBOOT verified that I had HBOOT 0.92 working on my phone. The original poster said that didn't work for him though, and that he "did a complete nandroid backup and everything is fine. When I boot to hboot it says it is 92." Not sure if he meant backup or restore though.
if you want an easier way to update h-boot and radio then download this fine and load throught hboot. no other steps needed

[Q] Phone possibly bricked but it might be saveable!

Hi,
My first phone was rooted and I rooted my second too so I am confident rooting them however my second phone which had been rooted for a while had a space issue on SD card so I cleared out a few things which unfourtunatley included all the backup files ....
It worked fine afterwards but didnt let me change rom (using rom manager) so I just left it in working order for a few months until I wanted to reflash a new rom (as I am sure most people do every few months)
When it didnt let me, I tried to unroot and root options using superoneclick and unrevoked3 however, unrevoked 3 just stayed on "running root" and superoneclick got so far and crashed. When I go into the bootloader, it says something about some filed missing (think might be some nbh files).
At the moment, when normally turning the phone on, it stays on the screen with the pink circle, the first boot screen.
I have tried updating it using the RUU but it takes a long time and then says "use the correct rom for your device" which I am, this method just boots my phone and goes to a htc logo.
I can also get into the bootloader but when I apply update.zip, it says it has failed and something about files not existing/step 7 failure.
The thing is, I can get to fast boot and I am sure there is a way via ADB to force a new image (such as a cyanogen recovery image) on to the device.
Can anyone tell me how to push an image to the phone without using the RUU (as this didnt work for me)??
Maybe my phone is just bricked
Thank you very much!!
It. Is. Not. Bricked.
You can only push files onto the phone through fastboot if you are S-OFF (are you?)
Have you tried to enter recovery? boot into Bootloader (vol down + power) and then select recovery. Does it work?
no?
Then you need a goldcard. Make one with your working Desire, stick it in your misbehaving one, and then run the latest WWE RUU (link on my guide, check #resources)
Thanks but I do not have another Desire...
Any card reader
yeah, I got a card reader laying around somewhere, if not ill go get one in Tesco, what where you thinking?

Hi Bortak, I am having similair problems with my phone sticking on the pink circle screen. I cant seem to load a recovery file from Bootloader. Will I need to make a Gold Card, my phone is s-off.
thanks mate
if phone is S-OFF go to my guide, look at advanced boot problems S-OFF.
SOLVED WOOHOO!
Thank you to all who helped but I managed to fix it my own way.
For anyone still having trouble...
I still had the cyanogen mod bootloader soo all I did was download the latest cyanogen mod rom and apply it (you can mount sd card from cm bootloader) and after a hairy minute, it finally booted up!

[Q] Clockwork Mod - select with Power Button?!

Hi guys, i'm very new in custom ROMs and all this exciting stuff - exactly i'm a noob.
so, i got my HTC Desire HD from the repair back and want to have MIUI on it.
first, i had to unlocked my bootloader via htcdev, which worked perfectly without any problems.
then i put ClockworkMod as recovery on it, and tried to upload the MIUI image via adb on the SD Card.
but when i try to select one point in cwmod it does nothing.
i know that i have to navigate with the volume buttons and have to select with power button, but that doesn't work, and i don't know why...
maybe anyone has an idea... i have none.
Phone: HTC Desire HD
OS: Android 2.3.5 with Sense 3.0 (already unlocked the bootloader)
ps. excuse my bad english
I'm not sure why that isn't working, but you can also control CWM with the hardware touch buttons at the bottom of your screen. I think it's "Home" for up, "Menu" for down, "Back" for back, and "Search" for select.

Thank you.
But i tried them also, and the CWMod logo just gets more opacity and the menu fades out.. nothin more happens.
can i also install MIUI via adb? without navigating through CWMod?
Hmm, sounds odd, I'm not sure why CWM isn't working. How did you install it?
I've never tried flashing a ROM via adb, it depends on whether you can issue CWM commands via adb shell. A quick Google suggests that works for some recoveries, but I wouldn't know for sure.
I've seen a few posts about people having trouble after unlocking with the official HTC tool. It doesn't unlock security to the same extent as the S-OFF methods. I've not tried it myself, did it say anything about allowing you to re-lock the phone? If you can, it might be better to re-lock then try the Advanced Hack Kit method... although again, I'm not 100% sure how that would work and it might be worth asking for advice in the AAHK IRC channel before starting.
again, thank you!
i tried some older versions of cwmod, but they don't even start... the htc logo just fades out, and the display light is on, but nothin else.
is it the right way to just flash a recovery or do i have to uninstall it correctly?
oh and btw.. i installed it via fastboot flash recovery xyz.img
oh i got it
//edit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1118865
this one works!
I can assume you have done it but it doesnt cost asking:
Cant you use the power(select) button in any options on Clockwork or just the option to flash it from SD?
My suggestion is to try to take it back to stock recovery and then rooting it in the old fashion way. As preacher said many people coming from the HTC unlocked bootloader are having problems.
I will comeback here as soon as I have a better answer for your problem but for now try to go all the way back to stock!
oh i guess i made obviously a dumb mistake.
i flashed with miui and miui doesn't start and guess what i forgot?...
the backup. will it work, if i try to flash with an 2.2.1 stock rom?
Yes, should be able to flash a stock ROM. I would try to get a stock ROM back on there and re-lock the bootloader - apparently you can do that from the command line. Then use the Advanced Ace Hack Kit from the Dev forum to unlock it, instead of the HTC method.
The AAHK is at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1259821 and if you read the last few pages of the thread, it talks about re-locking the bootloader. The AAHK now detects if your bootloader has been re-locked and will work - but you must re-lock before you use it.
Then you should be able to flash any custom ROM just fine.
Ok here is an update about my problem...
Yesterday i installed cwm and opened the bootloader via HTCDev, HTC SuperTool V3 also said that my device is rooted as i did their rooting-method. So i tried to flash a lightly old version of MIUI because it has shipped languagepacks within.
then i rebooted, and my phone freezes at HTC Logo. Now i tried so much ROMs and even tried to go back to a STOCK Rom, i also tried Super Wipe + Rev HD, which worked neither. now i relocked my bootloader and wanna ask if AAHK is a possibility to rescue my phone?
i don't get any ROM to work... so is it even possible to run aahk?
I started a thread in General here about problems with the HTC unlock:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1456749
There might be some help there.
How did you try to get the stock ROM back on? I would first try flashing an RUU as explained here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20068991&postcount=5
This will hopefully get a working ROM back on your phone. Then if your bootloader has been re-locked, you should be able to use the AAHK - but remember that you'll need to follow the manual carefully. If the AAHK is successful you're good to go.
i have no real solution for everyone...
but attn1 from aahk rescued my phone like a boss.
he flashed a new recovery, flashed piece of cyanogenmod via cwm, and flashed the boot.img via fastboot - cyanogenmod was running!
then he flashed with RUU and made my phone completely free with aahk.

[Q] Stuck on cyanogenmod boot loop and no clockwork recovery...

Ok so here's the deal I have been working on this STUPID Incredible for a buddy of mine for like the last 4 hours trying to fix his boot loop issue. I have scoured the internet looking for a way to fix this problem and downloaded countless *.img and *.zip files and who knows what else...
[EDIT] Also if I reboot to bootloader (either through adb fastboot or through the phone (VOL (-) + POWER) adb can't find the phone I can only access the phone when it's actually trying to boot up
[THE ISSUE]
The phone boots up shows the white htc incredible screen than proceeds to boot into cyanogenmod 7.blah.blah.blah (don't know the exact version it's from a couple months ago) and than just continuously shows the skateboard dude and doesn't proceed past that point.
When I reboot the phone and load up the bootloader it runs fine and than when I try to do the recovery option it will vibrate for a second show the htc incredible screen and than show the fastboot usb options (bootloader, reboot, reboot bootloader, power down) and if I select reboot it just reboots to the same problem.
If I choose Factory Reset it goes to the fastboot usb menu but I can't choose any of the options and it just sits there, I actually have to do a battery pull in order to do anything.
I know that clockword mod was installed on this phone but I can't access it by any means.
I hooked the phone up to my computer and loaded up adb (which is installed correctly as I've used it on my phone and the htc drivers are installed correctly) if I try to access my internal sd card through an adb shell it doesn't list anything and I have root in the shell (#) and if I try to cd to sd-ext it says "can't cd to sd-ext) so I can put something on the cards and load them up (as far as I know) to get the recovery working or anything...
adb does see the phone sees the files on the phone I can do a adb reboot it and that works fine.
Here's some info from the bootloader:

Ok so that got longer than I thought it would be (whoops) I hope I explained this well enough for everyone and didn't make it to confusing. I don't care if I have to go back to stock or what I just need to get this phone up and running again...
Thanks for reading this horribly long thread and for any feedback you have!
Sounds like something is borked with your install, and your recovery has vamooshed. Yes, those are the technical terms for it. Try an RUU.
http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=22
That will give you stock everything, including recovery, you just have to flash CWM, then in CWM wipe everything (wipe data/factory reset, wipe boot, wipe system), then flash a ROM.
Edit: try Pons' method first.
First, the phone isn't stupid...it's Incredible. I mean seriously /s
Can you reformat the sd card, download CWM to the root of your sd card, then install CWM through hboot that way?
CWM is available from pvillecomp.com, download the file under the heading "Recoveries" and rename it to: PB31IMG.zip
Couple questions:
What started the bootloop issue? What steps have you taken to try resolving this issue?

Have you tried to reflash cwm recovery thru hboot? http://dinc.does-it.net/Recoveries/CWM_5.0.2.0/PB31IMG.zip Then ser if you can access it. If you can wipe everything and flash a rom of your choosing. If that dosent work try an ruu thru hboot. http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/3.26.605.1/PB31IMG.zip
WIN!

Oh man thanks guys for the feedback I thought it would be something easy enough. I officially have cwm recovery working and am currently install cyanogenmod 9 as we speak! You guys are lifesavers seriously thank you!
CWM Boot Loop - Unable to access via Odin/ADB
I have the boot loader problem too... Last night, for no apparent reason, my phone turned off and didn't want to come back on again. I didn't change anything, plug it into anything, or do anything fancy, it just turned itself off and now it's stuck in a boot loop.
It boots into download mode okay, but I can't get it into recovery.
Win here too!
i bricked my phone running cm7 also and had the exact same problems right down to the T. ...SO!, that program that i installed on my computer took complete control of the phone and reset the rom. this is a wonderful piece of software. if you have an incredible download this program and dont worry about bricking your phone again.
how to obtain s-on now?
After I used the program from the website in the previous post, it brought me back to stock Rom and everything. Now it's still s-off, but I can't get into cwm, just hboot. My main goal is just to get this back to stock (unrooted and s-on). Can someone please explain how I go about doing this? I can get.any info needed ie. Radio etc.
Problem right now is in order to get into the phone I have to do the entire setup which includes activating it,which I cannot do.
Thank you guys much for this useful info.

Why do you want it unrooted and s-on? All you need to do is flash cwm recovery http://dinc.does-it.net/Recoveries/CWM_5.0.2.0/PB31IMG.zip thru hboot. From there you can flash superuser http://dinc.does-it.net/Superuser/SuperUser_3.1.1.zip and be rooted if so desired. If you really want s-on and stock you need to flash cwm http://dinc.does-it.net/Recoveries/CWM_5.0.2.0/PB31IMG.zip thru hboot, flash the 2.15.00.07.28 radio http://dinc.does-it.net/Radios/2.15.00.07.28/PB31IMG.zip thru hboot, and then flash the unrevoked s-on patch http://dinc.does-it.net/Unrevoked/unrevoked-forever-son.zip thru recovery. Once s-on flash a official ruu http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/4.08.605.15/PB31IMG.zip thru hboot and you will be stock s-on. Also if you want to bypass the activation just cancel it 3 or 4 times and it will let you skip it.

Tapping each corner going clockwise, starting in the top left, is an easier way to skip the setup.
thanks
Thanks guys. I ended up calling customer service and they got me past the activate screen. From there I re rooted the phone so I could use cwm recovery again and flash s-on then unrooted it and all is good now. Thanks

Desire Hd stuck on htc logo after bad radio flash

Make sure you have USB Cable and a Memory card before doing this. ** WARNING ** Flash At Your Own Risk.
This will take 1 hour or maybe more, just make sure you follow the steps carefully and do it carefully. This thread is for people who have no access to their rom and have only access to bootloader.
If you tried to return to stock rom via Advanced Ace Hack Kit and you tried to flash the stockrom back on and it just crashed during the process and you just pulled it out the usb cable out of the phone, So you pull the battery out the phone and restart it. All you see is the htc screen which it is just stuck on. Well I have the solution how to fix this. You might think it is bricked and have buy a new phone well you dont! All the problem is that the Advanced Ace Hack kit the radio RUU they provided you with is either a old version or a corrupted one so the phone cant boot up properly. This thread I am going to tell you how to flash the RUU and put a custom rom on which is ten times better than the android 2.3.5.
You have to concentrate while doing this or you will end up with a dead phone.
So step one - Go to google search and copy and paste RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.72.405.3_R2_Radio_12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17_M2_SF_release_163262_signed. go to the second link which says hotfile and download it.
Download the RUU_Signed File Via Hotfile, This will take sometime if you have a slow internet connection.
Step Two - It will say Welcome to the ROM Update Utility for your Android Phone also it will have a image on the left of the Desire HD. So click I Understand and click next so take the battery out of your phone and hold the volume down button and the power button, you will see a white screen with other selections so click bootloader to click it you have to click the power button to select it. So when you click bootloader it will go red and say FASTBOOT, So make sure the usb is in the computer/laptop during this process it will only go into fastboot if you have the usb connected to the computer first.
Step Three - Agree to all of the conditions and click next. Note: This process Will take sometime.
Step four- It will say Congratulations! your phone has been successfully been flashed! Now your phone is fully working and rooted so now your phone will reboot, If it doesnt power it on your self!
So it will boot up in android 2.3.5 because that was the rom that you were trying to flash via AAHK.
Step five - Open Advanced Ace Hack kit and make sure USB Debugging Mode is on.
Step six - There will be a option saying Hack Ace, This will root and install clockwork mod on your device, So type 1 and hit enter.
Note: this process will take sometime. Grab a cup of juice and crisps.
Step seven - The phone will reboot and will still be on android 2.3.5 so now you have superuser access and clockwork mod.
Step eight - Power off the phone and hold the volume down button and the power button, You will be in bootloader so now go down using the volume buttons and select recovery, to select this option you will have to click the power button to enter recovery mode.
Now your phone will be in recovery mode and will say Ace hack kit across the recovery screen, So now select wipe data/factory reset when it has wiped the phone select wipe cache partition, after that has wiped go to advanced option and select wipe dalvik cache.
Step nine - Your phone has nothing on it exept from bootloader and recovery! So now connect your mobile device to the computer and click mounts and storage, make sure your USB is connected. To complete this process make sure you have a 8GB Or 4GB Memory card in. So click mount USB storage, it will mount your memory card so you can access it through the computer to drag and drop files to flash on your mobile. You can download a Jellytime ROM on the XDA Forums So just choose which one you want and download it and drag and drop to the memory card while your phone is mounted to the computer via USB, Make sure you download a Google apps Package and flash it with it if it doesnt have the Google Playstore on the Rom. To Flash any zip files follow this - click unmount, go back to the main recovery options using the volume buttons and power button to select, go to install zip from sd card - select the zip file you want to flash then flash the Google apps Package after you flashed the ROM you want to have on your phone.
Last and final step! - Click reboot system now, your HTC DESIRE HD should reboot to the ROM you have flashed.
Congratulations! You have flashed and rooted your mobile device after being stuck in bootloader/fastboot mode.
If any problems just mail me or mail me via XDA Developers site.
I will help as much as I can to fix any problems.
Thank you for reading this thread and hope it helps.

Wait, I am beyond confused. If you are going back to stock with AAHK you are already S-OFF. You can just flash a recovery (if you don't already have one) and use that to flash a custom ROM if you want, or use AAHK to unroot and return to stock.
And...what does a radio have to do with anything?
And...why would you disconnect your phone while running AAHK?
And...AAHK doesn't provide corrupted RUUs. Maybe your download is corrupted?
Again, confused...

You cant flash clockwork mod on if you dont have USB debugging mode on, when the phone is stuck on the htc logo the only way is to flash a radio that works with the phone through bootloader/fastboot.
also when you flash a radio it wipes clockwork mod off it so you cant flash a recovery.
The radio file either was corrupted or either the wrong one for the phone because most of the time when you flash it is going to go perfectly but there is a chance where it will crash the process.
Again.. I said the radio might not have been corrupted it might just of crashed but you cannot access AAHK through fastboot/bootloader.

Wrong. All you say is wrong and misleading. To flash a recovery you need fastboot drivers working...if you don't have fastboot drivers working, that means that you can not access hboot. Therefore, your phone is bricked.
Second, when you flash a radio it wipes nothing...a ruu wipes partitions not any other stuff. AAHK, does not flash radios but flashes partition to gain ENG S-OFF, but wipes nothing. If the radio was corrupted and you were flashing in PD98IMG.zip way, then it won't flash as it get parsed before doing it, as it is the case in the Hack Kit.
A corrupted radio is bricked device. There is no chance to flash a corrupted radio and have a working phone. Flashing a wrong partition is a insurance to get a paperweight. Maybe you should read and do some research instead of trolling the forum.

AAHK does flash radio's but most of the time when you flash radios via a toolkit it will go perfectly, but there will be a time where it will go wrong and you will end up with no clockwork mod recovery or a bad radio flash. When you go on the AAHK you can return to stockrom which flashes radios or whatever but when you have a bad radio on your phone you cant access USB debugging mode because you need that on so you can access the AAHK. Flashing a new and updated radio will work because if your phone was bricked it will not let you into HBOOT/FASTBOOT.

Obviously too many technical errors in the OP. This thread only misleads users with no or little knowledge. Next time you better research a bit more before posting anything. Additionally there are dozens of CORRECT tuts all over xda to solve that kind of problems.
