[Q] Updating Rooted 2.3.2 to 2.3.3 - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just finished attempting to update to 2.3.3, and after the phone finishes rebooting, a prompt comes up saying "Could Not Update Software". My phone is rooted, bootloader not unlocked though. What's the problem here?

Did you modify the system?

After rooting your phone, did you remove any apps (bloatware)? If so, the OTA update won't work for you. You'll either need to use SEUS or flash 2.3.2 again and then the OTA update.
Cheers!

Unlocked bootloader and OTA Updates?

Hey guys had a few problems when modding my cousins Xperia play, I unlocked the bootloader and got it up and running no problems. But I also read if you have an unlocked bootloader you can't update with Over the air updates, is that true, if so, do I have to re-lock the bootloader in order to get them to work?
Yes,u have to re-lock it for OTAs,but using SEUS or PC companion is fine, but u might have to reset the phone.
Cheers
If you update using any method that isn't a manual flash, be prepared to brick the phone. Re-locking the bootloader is possible, but if I were you I would just flash newer firmware.

Thanks for the reply, I was thinking about flashing something newer manually, hopefully it will stop the "there are updates available "messages for my cousin. Wish I didn't bother rooting the phone for him now

Using root explorer or any program that can delete system apps I just delete the mobile care apk and run free

Awesome, I was hoping it was something that simple

If I check for updates without hooking up to pc. Will phone stay rooted?

From what I have read it will keep root if you use the ota update

Not true if you ota update. I guarantee you would lose root. Before you update OTA use an app called OTA Rootkeeper. It hides your root from OTA and make sure you enable the app to backup super user.
For R800i, you can choose OTA update and phone will stay rooted. That´s how i got .69 firmware with root because i didn´t want to unlock bootloader.
For R800x, R800a, R800at, I don´t know it, but i guess if you choose OTA, then you´ll lose it. Only way to get root is if you use OTA Rootkeeper (doesn´t work always) or you unlock bootloader.

Update w/o losing root?

hello.. my current fw is .431 and there is a new update 587
how to install new update w/o losing root?
I believe if you update OTA you can keep root.
For me, I just relocked my bootloader, flashed stock image, used pc companion to update to new firmware, then unlocked bootloader, flashed stock kernel with cwm from old firmware. Then used old root tutorials to get root then flashed my kernel of preference.
Easy right?
Sent from my LT15i using xda premium
it's Easy
if you're on locked bootloader
OTA update will keep your root..,
or if it didn't reach you OTA flash the firmware with flashtool
and it's the same root method for .431 ..,with .587 kernel of course
or if you are with an unlocked bootloader
flash the firmware with flashtool
then flash the advanced kernel .587 ..,you'll find it in the development section
after that flash superuser with CWM from here
hope i helped you =)
^^^^That guy was much more helpful you should thank him

Im sorry.. im newbie.. what is OTA?

OTA is the short form for Over The Air i.e. updating via WiFi or using data on your mobile.

But if you can update via OTA how?
lately on the .431 FW i tried to update it via wifi.. but still it ask me to update it via pc companion.
"You need to plug pc companion in order to update" it says something like that...
but take note that some countries don't have the the new base available via OTA. only method is PC companion.

I have problem updating OTA. When it finishes downloading and I tap install, it reboot the logo appear that is updating but when reboot to home screen it says that could not update. My phone is rooted. I didn't install cwm, only bisybox.
My status:
Code:
- .431 with wotanserver
- Unlocked bootloader using testpoint keeping trackid (Omnius)
- stock firmware + CWM
- Rooted using Superuser
- Some system apps uninstalled.
If I try to update through OTA it makes the first boot and says "Error updating"
What shall I do?
Relock the bootloader? (in this case shall I pay to unlock it again?)
Backup all with titanium, use wotanserver with new version and root again?
Restore all deleted apps and OTA?
Thanks, and sorry, I could not find the proper answer.
To arcuser,
I know what you mean.I tried it as well a couple of days before your first post.Didnt happen. But later in the evening there was a notification from Sony Ericsson via Update Centre on the device that an update was available via WiFi.Clicked on the notification and sweetas iam on build 4.1.B.0.587.
That's the only change that happened and yes the screen comes on faster when you are about to make calls.

Hi!, apart from what you mention, there are more improvements, some of them led notification works better than before, people say it's has less bugs than prior ones.
I've also same trouble, the upgrade is available by OTA but when you download and install it, it reboots and show you an icon and a message indicating it didn't upgraded. It looks that it consider prior installed version and when it upgrades it needs pure sony kernel and rom, otherwise you receive the message. And also, if you do in the other way.. this is upgrade with pc companion you loose your root, so the current solution seems to be going back to . A.0.562 -next to B.0.431 and the root and finally upgrade with OTA b.0.587. This is what people say that works, some guys did it and works, but it is a pain in your but doing all these steps.. so does anyone knows any other way of doing it?

[Q] OTA Update for Xperia S Failed

I have a rooted stock .45 xperia s and I just received the ota update for .55 last night.
When I try to install it, though, my phone keeps saying installation failed. It says "Could not install new software version. Try again."
I cannot unlock my bootloader so the new root kit won't be too helpful for me. I heard you won't lose root if you do ota update though. But how come mine kept on failing ? Do I need to delete something before I do ota update ?

Is it because I have superuser.apk in my system/app ?

is your rom rooted/deodexed ?
I found the solution.
I first went to recovery and flashed only the system portion of my old backup (almost vanilla android + root). The OTA update works fine after that.
I think the reason it didn't work the first time was because I had Secure Settings (for Tasker) installed directly in the system/app folder in order for it to toggle GPS.

[SOLVED] [Q] Why do I receive OTA updates after root and bootloader unlocked.

I still receive OTA updates after bootloader unlocked and rooting. Now SONY is prompt me up with a new system update available message, wich is Jelly Bean .211, but I already have that installed. Why? And how can I stop that updates to notify me.
If your on .211 and its saying that there is an update, then that's just a bug
You.can.simply disable or uninstall the update centre app

I'll try it. It worked, force stop and clear cache of Update Centre.
