Basically, I love the black, glossy Sense framework look (although I use launcherpro). I love the HTC dialer, the USB connection menu, the copy-and-paste and wifi router and the HTC camera from Froyo ROMs.
However, official Facebook/Twitter apps will not sync with Sense ROMs. I even pushed the default contacts app to the device, but the sync is still not working well. Also, voice search, chrome to phone etc is missing from the market in many Sense ROMs. I also prefer the stock Android contacts and messaging apps over HTCs.
I want to build a hybrid rom, probably based on the vanilla Opendesire ROM. I can skin the framework to black myself. My question is, does anyone know how to get the HTC camera / dialer /copy and paste / wifi / USB type apps onto a vanilla desire ROM?
I tried pushing the .apks myself through cmd but most just force close.
I'd really appreciate the help - I know a lot of users who are after these features.
Cheers,
Mike
Good idea! Also count HTC mail app with full exchange support.
I am not sure if there would be easier to start the other side - from the froyo sense rom and remove all unnecessary stuff...

This is the angle that I'm currently working. However, there is SO much junk in there, and I cannot for the life of me get Facebook / Twitter sync to work. I stripped out the Sense apps and installed the default Android contacts .apk. If I manually sync every contact through HTC 'People' / Facebook for Sense, it does somehow link the default Facebook app to the contact, but loads of bits don't work properly.
It's very annoying as integration of contacts between apps is one of the nicest features in Android (coming from a Moto Milestone), but doesn't exist on Sense Roms.
So nobody knows if it's possible to get the htc camera onto a rom without sense?
It's almost impossible as the Sense apps rely almost intirely on the Sense frameworks. You would need to port the Sense stuff from the frameworks.
One thing is cirtan: It will be hard or someone would've already done it.
I would however love this if it was possible
Juste remove the .apk you don't need in the /system/app folder, and then install the Sense ROM you want, download LauncherPro on the Market, and you will forget Sense but keep all Sense app and widgets !
but, very good IDEA
For sure _start_ with the Sense ROM, and remove stuff you don't want to get as close as possible to the ROM you want. This is what Team Villain did with their SuperHero roms.
Basicly all the Sense apps _rely_ on the HTC Framework. Pushing just a few .apk's to an AOSP rom will _never_ work. Without taking the needed stuff from the framework, which is basicly everything.
Facebook sync has little to nothing to do with the facebook app and / or the contacts app. Specially the contacts app does nothing with that. It are the dedicated sync providers that do the work and modify the contact-store. But (AFAIK this is widely known) getting facebook sync to work with the stock facebook app is about modifying your build.prop. If the facebook app detects a sense-model phone it won't present the sync options! On the hero with a clean compiled AOSP rom, changing the build.prop to report it as a Sapphire instead of a Hero and 'tadaah', facebook sync works.
The same with the desire: make sure the build.prop reports itself as a nexus one, and not a desire or any other phone model that came stock with sense, and it should work.
Once again, if you want a hybrid: Take a look at SuperHero rom for the Hero, and more importantly: Start with the Sense ROM of your choice and strip everything you don't want / like, retheme what you want to look stock and keep going. Getting the stock calendar / messaging apps in might be as simple as pushing the .apk's. Things like browser / people (contacts) / phone (dialer) I'm not so sure about, but it doesn't hurt to try!

THIS is what I need to do! Any guidance on this build.prop?
Hi,
I'm currently running CM6 and loving it, but I'm torn on what to try next... EViO, Baked Snack and VaelPak are all possibilities.
None of the ROM's really have the exact thing I want. Ideally, I'd like a ROM that has the following:
- Sense E-mail App
- Sense Calendar App
- Sense Lock Screen
- Sense Status Bar (with Custom Battery Icon)
- AOSP Contacts & Dialer
- AOSP Messaging (SMS/MMS)
- AOSP Gallery
- 4G Support
- FM Radio
- WiFi/Wired Tether
- Sprint Bloatware Removed (apart from Sprint TV)
- ADK Laucher (easy to add after the fact)
Any ideas on how to get this? I wish I was a Dev... I would build my own
I have been really happy with my testing of Evio. I have installed just about every rom in an attempt to find the perfect rom for me. The 2 i ussually come back to are Damage Control and Evio.
Some are upset that Dc hasnt had an update in a while but in my opinion it works well and is stable and there arent a lot of reasons they need a big update unles they have something to actually improve it.
As for evio VERY very solid rom. My suggestion if you like CM is to try one of these 2 (since evio is on your list i would go witht hat one) Remove all the sense ui crap and then search the forum for ASOP phone/contacts and messaging apks that were modded to work with sense roms. I know i have seen galelry and am pretty sure i ahve seen phone/contacts. the only one i dont think i have seen is messagin. (i am a handcent fan so havent really watched for ASOP messaging).
once you find the apks of the modded apps you can simply remove the Sense versions and replace with the ASOP version. This would give you pretty much what you are looking for at least for the hard parts. the bloat ware and launcher you can easily adapt to any rom. evio also comes with wired and wifi tether apps preinstalled.
anyway of the 3 i would try Evio next and good luck getting everything for your perfect rom set up.

I looked but couldn't find the AOSP apk's that I need. Do you think it will work if I just extract the apk's that I like from CM6, by copying them to my SD card and then moving them to my laptop? I can see MMS.apk, phone.apk, contacts.apk, and Gallery3D.apk in /system/app. Are there any other files that need to be copied with these?
Any help would be much appreciated.
As a developer myself, just no in the tech field, I find it helpful to know what other want so that I can produce the best. I'm sure that most of you do this because it's something that YOU personally want and or like. I deeply appreciate the work that has gone into such wonderful ROM's and I can't wait to see more.
As for me, I've tried out RR, CM, SR, Frank, Jager, ASOP, and a few other odds and ends.
It seems to me there should be a blend. A blend between Sense and well....nonsense.
Currently, I'm on the Ultimate ASOP. This ROM has been amazing because of the ability to customize. Like every ROM, there are quirks or just small things that bother me, but it's SOOOO close to greatness, IMHO. I like a lot about a lot of ROMS but if they're lacking Sense then I miss that. If they have Sense, I miss the customizing of the Non Sense. My question is, can the two be made to be CommonSense?
What I'm talking about is a ROM that combines a little bit of the HTC Sense side with the applications and setting and customization of the Non HTC Sense ROMs. For instance, the email application in the Driod root IMHO opinion is much better then the Sense one. You can easily check multiple emails and the default background is back. What if you could have Sense, but change the lock screen to something different and be able to add different themes easily? There are several instances where the two could be combined to make CommonSense. And, if you have some ideas please share!
I guess i'm just looking for ideas from others that I can take a pitch to a Chef along with a few $$$ to make a ROM that'll do just that. Is there anyone else that thinks the same or I am the only one riding the HellaNoSense boat?
check out IncDoes AOSP. but you should have posted in q/a or general for future reference

we have great phones and we havent taken full advantage imo from what i have seen so far
i prefer a sense based rom with virtually every sense component gutted aside from dialer and contacts (and other key vital stuff). most users use launcher pro, yet most devs seem to focus their [sense] work around modified rosie. Which doesnt seem to make a ton of sense to me. im sure the launcher pro dev would allow the use of his work cooked into roms with his permission right?

actually no. LP isnt open source. thats also whay CM uses ADW rather than LP
How about a JD froyo MASH-UP! That wud b hot! You know, cause a phone that won't boot gets the best battery life
Edit: I LOVED SR vanilla, but it's a little long in the tooth... at least for now. I still have issues with AOSP stability. But I haven't flashed anything new in a month so maybe I'm full of it.

Yeap. This.
Minimalism.
Bare bones, minimal special effects, no clutter.
Basically a tiling WM or Openbox layout with basic text menus or no menus with touch commands.
Hopefully I'll be able to get into cooking whenever I get my machine in order. I've been wanting to actually contribute to some coding/hacking projects but I've never found anything of interest that would motivate me... until now :3

Want. I just wish android took more looks from webOS. It is so beautiful!
The look & feel of the new Sense UI (The Desire Z ROM specifically), the fastest and most optimized speed possible, working camera w/ 720p video (only thing wrong with Desire Z ROM, imo), lots of free memory, clear of all the bloatware apps, aaaaaaaaaaaaand.... Ability to quickly change theme settings (transparency, selection colors, etc).
Oh, and great dev support.

My perfect rom would be:
Sense based Vanilla rom
htc keyboard
htc camera
htc gallery
htc contacts
either HTC facebook or contacts syncable with market facebook.
emmc working properly
adw built in
customizations avalable in cyanogen's latest rom
power widget built in to notification pull down.
figure out how to change the answer/silence to tabs
reboot option in power menu
6 signal bars
htc battery icon with %
keep the colored sense settings menu icons.
tab or rotary music controls (hidden when not in use)
thats all i can think of.
Having tried just about every ROM out there (and a couple of them a number of times) I think the problem I run into is there are little things here and there that I like about each.
All of our tastes are different, thus we like different things. Some people like the circle battery mod, some people like the rotary lock screen, etc etc...
What would be really cool is if there were a way to easily choose the specific mods you wanted... kinda like picking out options on a new car.
Ultimately, I think the answer is a dev that is willing to build you a custom ROM to your exact specifications. Of course, this would come with a price tag, but hey, it's exactly what you wanted (and it would be worth it IMO... any takers LOL).
In the meantime, I'm trying to figure out how to get what it is that I want and experiment. It's been fun, frustrating at times, and I still don't have everything I like, but at least we have lots of options to choose from, and I'm learning something new in the process
Is it not possible to build a Rom with a bunch of on off switches that allow you to select sense or no sense , or give you the option for circle battery vs stock ....
IMO.... this would be the ULTIMATE Rom .....

@ The OP: Maybe you should initiate a poll.
Hi all, looking for some advice before i root my Z (it's feeling a bit sluggish, so want to OC it)
I use HTC locations alot for the offline navigation. Do the stock (ish) sense ROMs have HTC locations enabled/working?
Also do any sense ROM's sync properly with HTC sense. I have paid a subscription for voice guided navigation (which i assume authenticates using the HTC sense interface - correct me if im wrong). If i flash a sense ROM will my subscription still be active once i sync my HTC sense account?
Lastly... i know HTC is planning to release a gingerbread update by the end of June. Will the devs (god bless them) get a rooted version of this out with HTC locations and sense syncing working soon after release.
Thanks for your time and advice
You can root and overclock, and still stay on the stock ROM. You don't need to go to a custom ROM, unless that is what you are looking to do. I've used the Godspeed kernel with the stock 1.34 ROM with good results. Everything on the stock ROM remains intact, it just opens up the CPU clock options.
As far as your question on Locations working on custom ROMs, every custom ROM is different, so that is too vague a question. What ROM in particular are you looking at? I've tried Virtuous (which is "stockish" as you mentioned), and Locations works fine.
Access to the Sense account is via email address and your Sense password, so that should be easy to migrate (if you switch ROMs). I haven't had any issues going between ROMs and being able to login to my Sense account. I don't use the paid navigation. But I would think that is linked to your Sense account the same way.
As far as a rooted version of the upcoming Gingerbread (with Sense) update, you'll have to wait and see what happens (like everybody else!). A rooted version will probably be available. And everything working is pretty likely too, but we won't know what the developers will run into until it actually happens. I think you would need a crystal ball to be able to know any more than that.
Thanks mate. I should have poked around the dev section more before posting this. Looks like everything is working on Virtuous Sense
Hello. I need help regarding the best ROM for my Desire Z. I need either sense 3.0 or sense 3.5 and need the best possible ram as i have already installed 4 ROMs and i have had problems with lags in messages and the lag in circle ring lock. overall homescreens as smooth but i need ram for reading msgs fast and applications launch quickly like on my default sense 2.1. i have tried runnydroid which is probably the fastest in homescreen scrolling but very weak in ram and opening apps. currently running desire HD rom with sense 3.0 v1.3 which is slightly better but i need something better in terms of RAM and with sense 3.0 or 3.5
help would be really appreciated
thanks
first of all, let's clear things out... sense 3.x was never meant to run on our desire z, i say HTC made a mistake when they released an official 3.x update
second, sense 3.x needs LOTS of ram to work. So, you don't have enough ram to run apps, solution? try the v6 supercharger script, set it as multitasking settings...
want more? make a SWAP partition on your sdcard, SWAP makes a part of your sdcard to work as ram...
want even more, you can bulletproof you messages app in order not to automatically kill it when in need of ram
i'll give you links if you want

First of all thanks for your kind replies. Riro Zizo thanks alot for these links. Can you tell me which ROM what work the best with these? the thing is that there must be a ROM which would be better in RAM performance. like my desire HD rom was better than runnydroid at least it was usable. now what do u mean by official sense 3.0 update? my last update was android 2.3.3 with 2.1 sense which is why i installed custom roms to get newer sense. thanks a lot
and blackknightavalon what do u mean by AOSP?
thanks a lot
oh one more thing. ive heard that with swap the sdcard gets a lower life and it dies quickly after a while

Same position as you on Desire Z and HAD to have Sense 3 - well after trying Unity and Affinity and another that wouldn't even boot and loads of crashes and mem issues I gave up. Yes I did the swap partition (for Leedroid/Ace but those never would install via CM recovery 5) didn't do the supercharger thing...but eventually went to G-Lite and really happy.
Sense is great but slow/laggy, even on Virtuous Sense or my stock rom...my OTA GB was slow too. Best to find or invest in a few apps or widgets and switch to a non Sense rom like G-Lite cos RAM is a real issue on the Z it seems (reason for rooting apart from the usual privacy/adware stuffs was speed, upset at seeing LOADING every time I opened my homescreen)

I agree... Sense-less ROMs are the best ones and they run the smoothest on Desire Z. I first took on CM7 and then moved to Bulletproof's MIUI which stopped me from selling my phone. However, even then the phone started to lag after a months use. Next step was to move to Elitemod244 which is basically based on CM7 but supercharged and ultra-fast. This stopped me from dumping my phone to get a Galaxy Nexus.
I would recommend that you try Elitemod244 (or the latest version if you want) and then modify it to your liking. It will take some time, but at least your phone will be fast and would work as it should instead of hanging or reloading the launcher time n time again.
thanks for your kind replies but the thing is i NEED sense 3.0 or 3.5 and i will run this desire HD rom if i dont get any other roms. ive already used cyangenmod already but i need sense. are there any roms which might be better than the desire HD rom? and im recently having an issue that i dont receive all text messages and some of these are lost in this particular rom. any way to fix this?

In that case i would go for Virtuous Sense, doesn't have to much bullsht in it..
And for the lost messages, there is standard an app installed in these roms that collects all your messages.
Btw.. I'm surfing xda for 2 years now daily, and today is the first time i made an account Really EVERYTHING about everything has been asked before i came here, so there was no need for it.
Just wanted to say this...
you can try any sense rom you want without any issues if you do all these tweaks i told you about... launcher reloads can be solved by making a file called "local.prop" in /data/ (if you already have the file, edit it) and put this inside it
Code:
ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1
and reboot... this WILL solve your problem, GUARANTEED
Why do you need Sense that bad? We're trying to get rid of it over on the MT4GS boards.

Just curious, what do you need Sense for?
I was losing text messages also, but I solved that by preventing the messaging apk from being closed. It's a simple setting in Cyanogenmod, but I believe that is what Riro Zizo is talking about when they say Bulletproof an app.

Blackout incredible has Sense 3.6 And when I apply the v6Supercharger it works pretty fine. But remember that you need to Format your SD card before you install it. It gives you extra performance. atleast it happened to me.
I fully understand why you might want a SENSE rom.
I have tried many roms since my DZ is out of warranty, the Mimicry one was nearly the best, except it had bad performances after some weeks of usage.
And this AOSP was a android 4 rom with nice custom features, but there was a LOT i missed from SENSE. Let's just talk about the weather/clock widget, the audio player, the FM radio app, the nice interface, the perfect virtual keyboard...
Sense really offers the best user experience on that phone.
A few days ago I finally the perfect rom, you should try it: TrickDroid 4.0.0
As told in the corresponding topic on xda, you just absolutely need to enable swap because it's a full Sense 4.
And if you want some specific tweaks from AOSP, of you want to remove some things from Sense, the TrickDroid Tweaks allows you to simply do that.
