I've spend some time searching for a modded apk, but I've been unable to find one. From what I've read it's possible to do. (h**p://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-themes/42629-how-invert-colors-gmail-apk-message-display-screen-3.html)
I just think it will be much more easy on the eyes and battery life with a nice black screen like the default email app.
I second this - I'm sure many devs would include this in their ROMs if it is ever created.
I think a customized version matching the black/blue touchwiz colors would be nice!
Black base with blue details. I'd use it! I can't wait for Froyo for the new Gmail though.
i really like this idea, devs we need this!!pretty please
+6 !
I'm going to have to second this one too... Black GMail sounds awesome especially on these AMOLED screens

not it!
Agreed, that would be awesome.
I'll give this a shot this week. APK manager will make it easier but not guaranteeing any results.
Anyone feels like assisting on this pm me, two heads are better!

I've found some xml files already that probably control it all but it might be simpler than that I'm checking tonight

Good luck!
If I had any clue how to edit the XMLs I'd offer to assist.
I guess some of these xmls weren't supposed to be touched. First attempt and I have no Epic for the time being. I'm doing what I can on the phone itself to avoid Odin, but that's next. I have to try another route that is showing promise. It might require a theme to work though because one way is to edit the colors in the framework that is inherited by Gmail. Once I'm back up and running I can see where I can push this.
Back up one nandroid was corrupt, the older one worked. Now I can see where I went wrong, don't expect any results tonight lol.
Here's where my two errors happened. I deleted gmail.apk with root explorer, phone did not like that. Bootlooped. I restored the nandroid backup that was corrupt. It didn't work fc everything once booted so I did a factory data reset. That fixed it to boot and run. Next I applied the modified gmail with an update zip. This crashed the phone worse. I am back up to where I was earlier today, I'm going to try a different signing method as well as making it's own update zip. If that doesn't work, the xmls won't allow me to edit so it will be up to me changing colors in the android framework.
http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...olors-gmail-apk-message-display-screen-3.html Link from first post if you missed it
This may help.
Are you working odex or deodex BTW?
Care to fill us in which framework files you are editing? I will play with this some tonight to, off work in 1 1/2 hours.

And which xmls won't let you edit them?
is there a way to edit it? This must have been asked a million times, but i don't mean with widget locker or lockbot or something like that. I find the clock tacky, since the notification bar is right there and i want to remove it. i'd imagine it would require rooting. thanks
yes
yes requires rooting because you would have to modify a theme zip like a stock theme then modify the .PNG then flash ....atleast thats the only way i know about it
You need to be rooted and running a deodexed rom. You then would have to do some xml edits to remove the clock

ok thanks guys. while i've rooted before, my epic still has the new phone smell and i'm still babying it. but could you help with this? is there a locking app that either:
1. overwrites that xml file or w.e. so that it is not active at the same time. (so they aren't fighting for domination?)
2. keeps the functionality of being able to swipe to missed texts, calls, e.t.c.
thanks.

Those two are pretty much it as far as lockscreens that work on the epic. You can get the rotary lockscreen if you use the cm6 beta, which I have found to be quite stable. Other than that you are going to need an app rather than a flashable zip.

I would recommend GOTO. Its in the market. Its a paid app, but as you unlock you can choose between messages, phone and gmail. You can change which apps it opens if you don't use the stock programs. I have been using it for a month or so. Just make sure you run through the setup twice to make sure the settings are set correctly. Initial setup is kind of tricky i though. Just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.
I change themes quite often, but only one theme that I've come across for the Samsung Epic that uses AOSP messaging as opposed the the default "Samsung messaging" (I guess you could call it), is Engraved Blues. I've used that theme for the longest, mostly because it has AOSP messaging. It comes with WAY more user functionality than the limited "Samsung Messaging." Is there anyone that could put AOSP Messaging into a flashable zip? That way, I can use whatever theme I chose, and still have AOSP Messaging. I would really appreciate it if this could be done!
I'd even be willing to learn how to do it. I usually don't request, and tinker with things on my own, but I'd need some help with this one. If someone wants to walk me through the process, I'd be even more appreciative, because I wouldn't have to ask for these kinds of things!
I don't know what you mean by AOSP messaging but Impaler's transparent MMS are flashable zips. They both look and run very well. Give one of them a try. Just download and flash in CWM.

AOSP messaging is I guess stock Android messaging. At least that's what someone told me a while back. There are noticeable differences. Probably one of the most important is the fact that with default Sammy messaging, when messages come in while I'm roaming, they are 4 hours in advance. For some reason, this isn't the case with AOSP messaging. It's really weird. There are also options for vibration types, and you're also able to change the font size of the messages. None of these options are present in Sammy messaging, AND, there are no chat balloons; just color backgrounds.
The MOST important reason I prefer AOSP is because for whatever reason, I cannot pinpoint, whenever I run a ROM with Samsung's messaging app, the phone tends to randomly restart. Ever since I've been using Engraved Blues with AOSP messaging, the random restarts are nonexistent. No reboots whatsoever! My phone has been super stable with SRF 1.1.1 and Engraved Blues. I don't know why it causes those reboots, and I don't have my messaging set to keep a lot of messages. Maybe 50 at the most.
Impaler's transparent messaging is based off of Samsung's Android messaging app and while it looks awesomely sweet, I've had the same unfortunate reboots as it seems to be based off of Sammy messaging.
EDIT: Ok, just noticed this in his thread.
These apps are the 2.2 MMS app, only about 50 times better than Samsung could have ever made it...

Maybe I should give it a try again? I know when he first started posting the transparent messaging app series, I could've sworn it was simply themed Samsung messaging?

I haven't really had any problems with what you mentioned. I would say give it a try. I think you will be pretty happy. His messaging app is always the first mod I flash after flashing a new ROM or theme. If it doesn't work for you, sorry.
I have that same problem with Swype where when I'm roaming all my messages read 4 hours ahead of time. Gets really bothersome. I can't live without swype anymore though.

Funny thing is that before I installed the Engraved Blues theme, I thought that the Samsung messaging app was standard Android. If I hadn't come across the theme, I wouldn't have known a thing about AOSP messaging. And what's with that roaming problem? Man, that's so annoying! How'd Samsung let that one out of the gate with that glaring problem???

From what I was told/read it is a Sprint problem with how their devices communicate with the towers used for roaming. So blame Sprint for the problem

I had a ton o' problems! I couldn't get the menu colors to change and **** kept force closing... And you just sat there!
Kidding.
OP: Use the stock or simply blue as a template. Adding specific files would be an annoying process. Theme/add the files that you would normally be changing and whip them in with the template.
Off-topic: to Mystery, eccoce, and other themers, I am having trouble getting application icons to stick. And now my wallpaper is not sticking. Some that look good on stock don't show up on SRF. The wallpaper shows up on stock but doesn't on Frankenstein... Any idea what is causing this?
There are also xml files in the framework. What I did was build the theme just how I wanted it. After that I copied the jar file, all of the unlock images and all of the unlock xml files from simply blue. I modified some of the unlock images and that was it. Granted my theme is simple so that made it easier.

you realize I got it to work on my rom and I also got it to work on my theme. The amount if work I had to do to get it to work is alot to type.
I had to transfere xmls &pngs to a 100% stock framework-res.apk. I also had to modify other xmls and then I had to android.policy.jar.
If I am to go into details it would take me hours to write one post and it wouldn't be 100% gurante it would work for him cause then there is going to be changes he is going have to make to work with his theme cause my edits may contradict some of his.
So unless you know the full story you can just keep your mouth shut or tell him your self how you did it

And this is exactly the kind of answer I would say we are all looking for. It's not important how hard it is, what matters is getting pointed in the right direction on what had to be done, and to pick up from where you left it. THAT is what Open Source is all about!

Can do like I normally do when porting to a new firmware (ie EC05 to EF02). Decompile the jar and dex, then do a directory diff between maddoggins and your jar. I use winmerge. Then start figuring out what are the differences for the firmware, and the differences for the mod... and just copy mod differences over...
Thx. I'm busy trying to muddle through facebook documentation, atm. Not sure when I'll pick this back up, but I was planning on doing a diff on th jar.

Hello,
I just updated my SGS2 to 2.3.4 today and unfortunately, I seem to have lost the part that I liked the most about the messaging app: the ability to change themes. I really hate the way it looks now and would really like the plain look of one of the themes back.
Is it possible to push the older themable messaging app. to this new firmware and get the theme functionality back?
If anyone has the messaging app that supports themes, could you please pull it and attach it here so I can give it a try?
Many thanks.
+1 I miss the black theme as it goes sooo much better with my current rom. I'd be interested to know if this can be done
True. Let's see if someone can help with this
I use GoSmsPro and it has a few themes
I understand that there are alternatives available but I wish to have the stock messaging app back which supports themes I would really appreciate it if someone could pull it from their phone.
I'd like to have the stock messaging app with themes too (I wa addicted to the "funny" style..., I'm a dumbass I know...)
There should be SOMEONE with the older app
Here's what I tried:
I tried downloading an older KE7 firmware from 18th May and extracted the Mms.apk/odex and MmsProvisioning.apk/odex files and pushed them to /system/app and tried rebooting but that didn't change anything
If I try INSTALLING the new Mms.apk file it says Application not installed even if I try remounting the system as rw
Discussed before in this thread, no joy so far:
