WP7 Will the email folders ever be implemented - Windows Phone 7 General

I'm raving and raving about WP7 and my friend who is also in IT can't stand it because of it not having folders sync with exchange.

Not sure what you mean. On my WP7 (admittedly running the latest Mango drop, so that *may* be a factor), if I go into my mail account, select "Folders", then "show all folders", I see all of my custom folders in a tree view, and I can go into any of them. I'm not sure if they auto-sync, since I don't generally use the custom folders on a daily basis, but I can manually sync & search.

Syncing folders did always work. Even before NoDo. Just like you said, select an e-mail account, slide up the bottom bar, choose "folders", choose "show all folders" and then select one. There should then be an option "sync folder". Tap it and it will always be synced automatically.

I saw the same thing

Our company server is exchange 2010. And it's working absolutely flawlessly.

Trophy with NoDo and Exchange 2010... folders sync without any issues.

I am sending him the url to this
Thanks for confirmation, I know you have to go to folders and tell them to sync maybe he wasn't doing that? Again thanks

You can tell it to sync other folders.. it will update automatically as items arrive into that folder, too. You can also pin particular folders to your start screen if there's a certain one you want to keep better tabs on.

Problems: Google Exchange Server (Activesync)

Hey guys, since a few days I have massive problems with syncing my device with google (contacts, calendar, emails). I used activesync with the snyc settings to m.google.com and suddenly it tries to sync always the entire content from new, every time stating that there are changes done on the server side which requires entire resync. does anybody have the same issues and a solution to that?
I could never get it working right. I use goosync (payservice).
I use this for contacts and calendar but couldn't get the email portion to work reliably. I use IMAP for gmail.
mine syncs fine.

same, works perfectly for me.
Although i only use google for calender and e-mail, i use dashwire to back up my contacts.
You have probably already tried it, but have you disabled all but one and checked it to see if you still have the same issue?
If it works properly with just e-mail for example, then add in calender and try it again. If it works then add contacts back in or if it breaks remove calender and try contacts instead.
Might help you track down whats causing the issue.
Just an idea.
Mine syncs fine as well. At first I had problems with syncing because I never set up a Calendar or Contacts with Google, so I unchecked everything except Mail. Try that.
Check this out from wmexperts.com:
Has anyone else noticed that they can't sync Google Gmail via Activesync over the past few days? At first I thought it was just me but soon came to find that the "Error Synchronization" message was being displayed on other Windows phones.
The official error code is 0x8600050c (Communications Error) and in looking over at Google Mobile's Help Forum, there are a few solutions available.
The first suggestion is to delete the current Exchange Server relationship and re-create it. Another solution suggests to un-check the email option in Activesync, reboot the phone, re-check the email option and sync. The latter seems to have the most success.
We couldn't find anything official from Google on the cause of these errors or of a "official" solution. If we hear of anything we'll pass it on.

Yes I agree, but to Google's defense, they say this is in Beta, but we are spoiled with great Google products so we are expecting too much. I do wish they would put more effort to it though, it has been like this since November when I tried it and I haven't seen anything improved in 3-4 months.

Oh don't think I am bagging google & all their great products & freebies.
But it just seem they set expectations so high, that they use the excuse of "beta" forever before releasing anything (witness gmail was an invite forever!).

I had the same problem a few days ago. I deleted the Exchange Server relationship and re-created it, and it's worked fine since. I've had similar problems periodically in the past - I chalk it up to it being a free service.
I got google sync to work, just got my touch pro2 on sunday. works with my main google calendar, saw a user around here recommend ActiveGCSync for additional google calendars, will try that tonight. The only problem I had is i initially synced all my gmail contacts to my phone (most without names or phone numbers), so then I unchecked 'contacts' thinking it would take them out, but instead it removed ALL the contacts from my phone But now all my phone contacts are backed up in my gmail I guess I will have to clean up the mess manually and sync them back up...
I spent a good part of my day so far editing all my gmail contacts and merging duplicates and the last tihng I did was set up a bunch of new 'groups' under the contacts in gmail. I was hoping that after I sync'd back up that I would be able to use the google created contact groups as a means of filtering my contact list, but this seems not to be the case.
From searching around here I ran across a program called 'Seven' and others, which I will explore if there isn't another way. But I was hoping someone could give me some ideas other than individually editing the "Category" of each contact, which seems to be the field which it looks at for "Filter" under the menu soft key.
Thanks
I use Seven Beta to sync all my mail accs. On creation gives me the option for sync of contacts and calendar as well. Everything works great.

Do you sync google contacts that you have put into groups, and then can you use the TouchFlo contact list to filter them by those groups?

Additional Google "Other Calendars" will not sync to phone

I'm having problems synching multiple Google calendars to my phone...
Under "My Calendars" in Google calendar (when viewing Calendar Settings via the desktop) I have my own named calendar. Under "Other Calendars" I have my wife's calendar, "Contacts' birthdays and Events", "UK Holidays" and I've just added a Google calendar called "England" which contains the upcomming World Cup Fixtures.
Everything in my original four calendars syncs fine - and if I use the "Create New Calendar" button to add another calendar under "My Calendars" that too appears on the phone, but try as I might I can do nothing to make the "England" calendar appear.
I actually had a similar problem just after getting the phone - but then it was with the "Contacts' birthdays and Events" calendar which I'd just added. It seems to me that whatever calendars are there when the phone first syncs will appear just fine, but if you add any extra "Other Calendars" they never show up.
I fixed the previous issue by doing a full system reset and starting over. That was fine then, because I'd had the phone less than a day, so hadn't set much up, but I don't want to keep doing this every time I want to add another calendar!
I found another discussion on the Google forums with a link to a solution that involved the following...
Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications
com.android.providers.calendar -> clear data
Forced a Calendar Sync and got all my Calendars
Trouble is, that was for a HTC hero, and there doesn't appear to be a com.android.providers.calendar app on the Desire!
I have tried...
Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications
Calendar storage -> Clear data
...That did clear everything and force a re-sync, but still the "England" calendar does not appear.
I've also checked it's not listed on the phone's calendar app under Calendars, and I've tried the "Add calendars" option there too, but that does nothing.
Has anyone got any ideas how I can resove this? I realise I could copy all the events from another calendar to my own one, but I'd rather be able to sync things automatically.
Thanks,
Matt
I've seen a few similar issues posted on various boards, without any concrete solutions, so I'm guessing it may well be affecting others too - although admittedly, it's probably not a major issue, as how often do people chop and change their calendars?
Would someone be prepared to try adding another calendar (via their Desktop) and seeing if they can see it on their Desire? (i.e. From Google Calendar, select Other Calendar's, Add, Browse Interesting Calendars, then pick one to try - you can always remove it later.)
I also tried...
Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications
Calendar -> Clear data
...but this didn't help either.
My only other thought was that perhaps I'd hit a limit on the number of calendars, but I'd be surprised if that was the case already?
If I go into the calendars option on the phone I see...
My Calendar
<My named calendar>
Contact's birthdays and events
UK Holidays
<Wife's calendar>
PC Sync
If this is an issue for other people too, then perhaps it could be added to the "Flaws & annoyances with the HTC Desire..." thread.
Any assistance appreciated.
Instead of clearing the calendars data, look for 'Calendar Storage' and clear the data for that, followed by a reboot.

Also, whats the difference between My Calendar, My Named Calendar and PC Sync?
Thanks Rusty, but I tried that the first time around with no luck.
Just to be sure, I just did so again and then immediately rebooted, but I still only get my original set of calendars back - no sign of the England world cup fixtures.

I think My Calendar is local to the phone (i.e. not synched to a Google account, so you won't see stuff in there if you look online), and <My Named Calendar> is the Google one.
PC Sync is presumably one used if your using HTC Sync or some other program to sync with a calendar stored locally on your own PC. (I don't use HTC Sync though, as I've no need for it.)
I've got 2 calendars showing on the phone, my one and the UK Holidays one I picked out from the interesting list a while ago.
Just tried adding Englands WC fixtures and it's not showing in the list, but working fine on the desktop. Forced it to sync up and it made no difference.
Thanks for trying this Rusty - it seems to confirm that this is an issue, and not just me...
As far as I can tell it seems to be a problem adding ANY additional calendars, as I also tried adding ones that had events today - just in case it was something to do with nothing being in the calendar for a few weeks ahead (as is the case with the World Cup Fixtures).
As mentioned in my original post, it looks like this problem may not be Desire specific, but it looks like we could do with a Desire specific solution/workaround, as the Hero one's not appropriate for us.
I may look into an alternative calendar app.
As far as I can see the built in one doesn't allow adding a new event and having it set to private?
It doesn't sync tasks either
I'm just worrying about having 3 different push connections (google for contacts, k-9 email for email and whatever calendar app for calendar) and its affect on battery life.
Had the same problem,it didnt sync right away, the next day it did though... weird.

I also read of possible delays syncing, and thought that may be the case here. I've had these extra calendar(s) on for several days now and despite reboots, clearing data and re-syncing, still nothing's appeared.

Another issue I noticed was that events added before a certain date would not get synced. Simply opening an event on the pc and editing it, saving, then undoing the changes would get it synced. Luckily I only started using Google Calendar a couple months ago, so I didnt have that many events saved before this certain date and went through each one of them editing, saving then undoing the changes. Afterwards, all events synced ok.

I had a similar issue with some repeating events that began many months/years ago. In that case what I did was stop the repeating event then re-add them as new ones going forward. That wasn't such a pain as I only have about four of these for specific days, but at least there was an easy workaround!
A workaround for adding additional calendars that does not involve completely resetting everything on the phone would be nice.

[Q] Exchange folder sync

For Exchange mail accounts, I'm assuming you can select which folders you want to sync (have pushed to the phone) - correct?
And for multiple accounts, can you set different notification (vibrate, sound) types per account?
Go to the folders of the Exchange Account and show all folders. You will then be presented your folders. Select the folder you want to sync and tap on that folder. It will then sync and bring it up one level and you will see that folder below your main inbox.
You can't set custom ring tones to each account.
1. yes (at first only inbox will, but you can view the folder and say syncronise this folder)
2. no, not at present
My company just migrated me to Exchange last night. I'm able to sync my in box and the folders I want to sync but I have rules on Exchange that move some emails into certain folders. Once this happens I'm not getting notified that I have a new email from that person who the rule is set for.
Any suggestions?
It doesn't support alerting when items appear in subfolders of the inbox. A workaround would be to turn those rules off so messages arrive in your inbox. Then run the rules manually periodically to clean it up.
Does it at least update the Hotmail/Outlook Live Tile when a new mail comes to the sub-folder?
Without any sort of notification to the user that a message is there, it's pretty damn useless to use. Mind as well just use POP3 or IMAP on a 30 minute poll or something instead...

No it doesn't update the tile, you can sync the sub folders but if you don't select all folders to see if there is anything new there.
The only work around I could find was to create a rule to just move a copy to the folder and leave the original in the inbox. It is a terrible solution but at least it kind of works.
I don't think this is a WP7 issue since a co-worker has an iPhone and he has the same issue.

Windows Live sync massacre

Ok so I used apparently easy and nice way to sync contacts and calendar
WM 6.5 -> Windows Live -> WP7 through ActiveSync on WM.
The result? All calendar entries got synced.
Contacts?
ALL EMPTY!!!!!!
Only some of them have home phone.
Nothing else. No phones, emails, address, nothing.
1500 contacts.
Solution? If this is the only result I can get, I say WindowsLive sucks big time!
P.S. contacts in Hotmail server/online are FINE
umm since when did activesync work with wp7?

errm, again:
On WM6.5 I used ActiveSync to sync with WindowsLive.
Contacts were correctly synced with Hotmail.
Than I just synced my WP7 with my Live account.
Result is email works like it did from the beginning, Calendar fine BUT no past
Items were synced.
Contacts result is most of them is empty, and not even all are on the device.
Any clue? Currently it TOTALLY pisses me off!!!!
Make sure you've checked all boxes that need checking and then do all your editing on windows live. Do something that makes Live interact with your phone like find it and ring it.
After I made sure Live was interacting with my phone, all my contacts synced and whenever I made changes on Live, they were made on my phone too.
Hope this helps.
Okay, what BOXES you mean?
Guys I would love to know if there is any extra setting regarding this Sync.
I'm in deep **** with this. Annoying.
Ok so apparently nobody here uses WMLive.
I thought all of you do it..
Pity. Looks like "working out of the box" here is just another myth.
And the problem is touching one of the BASIC things on any phone and WP7 especially.
MS products don't speak to themsleves correctly again.
What pisses me off even more, is that People Hub has no problem with updating ************* Facebook news,
but cannot correctly sync basic contact data.
Now I see it makes multiple contacts with separate data. And some of the contacts are missing.

You've probably already done this, but, just in case...
If you go to Settings>email & accounts you will see a list of accounts you've set up already. Under each account name the content that is currently set to sync for that account is displayed. Make sure that you see "contacts" under your "Windows Live" account. If not, select that account and you'll see a box to check under "content to sync" called "contacts." Check it.

I dunno, you've got something crazy going on. It's worth a try. I don't know if I'd consider a hard reset a hassle, a phone is pretty useless without contacts.
I've managed to sync my contacts from Windows Live twice with no issues. I doubt you made any mistakes, from Windows Live -> Windows Phone is as simple as adding that primary account.
How are you verifying that that the ActiveSync -> Windows Live worked correctly?

Well because all 1500 contacts are sitting nicely on my Hotmail with all details preserved, incl. notes.
Checked it on many of them.
THIS IS A ****ING DISASTER. I have a huge disappointment with WP7 now.
Microsoft you suck big time!!
I resetted my phone.
Now the ****er is syncing endlessly all the contacts from the beginning.
My Hotmail has 2600 contacts in total but the phone does sync 5600 contacts and doesn't stop!!!
What the hell is that. What a crap!!!!!
Anybody experienced such thing? This is ridiculous!!!
I have no bloody idea what to do!!!
Currently it synced 18000 contacts.
It's the biggest crap I've ever seen on any smartphone in my life.
I start to think just the opposite about this device.
After every reset is the same!
Massacre!
This is the first time I've heard about a contacts sync issue this severe.
Maybe it's some sort of hardware issue affecting the phone's performance..
While you still have your sanity, try this...setup a new Live account and sync that to the phone. Then delete the account from the phone and try synching your primary account again.

[Q] Gmail - Unable to Delete email? It's only Archiving (to All Mail)

I've done my due diligence (searching for HOURS on end), so I know this has been discussed many times but I still have not seen any sort of solution or progress on how to fix the issue.
Here is the issue: Gmail/Google accounts in WP7, when you press the Trash-can icon to delete your email(s), it does not actually move the email to the 'Trash' folder (or how Gmail understands it, the 'Trash' label). It simply removes the 'Inbox' label but still keeps the message under 'All Mail'.
I've tried everything - set up my email account as an ActiveSync account and tried deleting, going to my Gmail (or any other of my email accounts that resides on Google Apps) account settings via the web browser and try fiddling with the Advanced IMAP options, but nothing.
Does anyone have any solution for this? Unfortunately, this is pretty much a dealbreaker for me with WP7 - I just purchased the HTC Trophy. I want to really love the OS/device (and I do love the OS) but being able to properly delete my Google/Gmail emails is crucial.
I've heard some people, as a temporary stop-gap, to just use the "Move to Folder" and move the email message to [Gmail]\Trash, but I don't see that folder in WP7. Any ideas on this?
Any help or insight in this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
There is no solution (as in setting you can change in WP7 or on google.com) that changes this behavior. The only real option is to occasionally log in to your email account on the website and purge old mail from all mail. That's what I do about once every couple of months.
Thanks for the response. That's a real bummer. Do you or anyone know if this is something Microsoft plans on fixing? Basically it just entails making the Delete/Trash Can -> Remove Inbox Label + Add Trash Label to the message.
Also, do you know how I could view the [Gmail]\Trash folder/label? When I try to browse All Folders, it doesn't show up. Any ideas?
Thanks.

You should be able to change imap settings in gmail. There's a few articles I found, but they're a bit old, and I'm apparently too new of a member to link. I've gone ahead to write a few instructions.
1. Go to settings in your gmail
2. Go to the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab
3. In IMAP access, under "When I mark a message in IMAP as deleted:" select "Auto-expunge off"
4. In IMAP access, under "When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:" select "Move the message to the Trash" or "Immediately delete the message forever"
I'm still trying to figure out how exactly the behavior works on my own device. From my understanding, by doing this, you'll send deleted message to the trash rather than archive. It appears that you lose the "instant" server update (so you might have emails that you delete on your phone stay in your inbox as unread for a while).
**edit for further research - It appears that your message will only be deleted if there are no other labels for it. Apparently [gmail]all mail counts as a label. So what the heck did I tell you to do?
Thanks for the reply. I don't understand what your last part meant..the part about your edit for further research. Please clarify. Thanks.

This, and it's the same for IOS, not a WP7 issue.
I read numerous guides looking for a solution but there isn't one. If an email exists in another view, i.e. "All Mail" then it won't be deleted.
After using IOS and WP7 this was one of the main reasons for moving to Android. It may seem a bit extreme but I hate having email I don't need. Everything gets read and deleted.
What you say is true in a technical sense, but it misses the underlying issue. Gmail has one label, Gmail/Trash, that is special. Any email that is sent there automatically has all other labels removed. However, it is up to an email client to apply the label. For example, the Thunderbird email client on Windows does just that. If I read an email in my Inbox, and then click the Delete button, Thunderbird sends and IMAP notification to Gmail to apply the Gmail/Trash label to the message, and it is instantly gone from both my Inbox and All Mail. And the Gmail/Trash label is automatically purged after 30 days.
The problem with WP7 and iOS is that they don't (and possibly can't) send the same notification. All they currently do is notify Gmail to remove the Inbox label. And, as has already been noted, the fact that the email is still in All Mail causes it to be retained on the server.
Thanks for the info, guys. I realize and understand that the culprit is the WP7 mail client, not Gmail.
As a temporary workaround (I am seriously hoping they fix this.. you guys should visit http://windowsphone.uservoice.com/f...eting-email-in-gmail-really-delete-?ref=title to vote for adding this feature), I created a new label called "WP7 Trash". From now on, when I want to "delete" mail, I simply move to to that folder/label in the WP7 mail client, and then anytime down the road I can log into my accounts and just delete all the mail in that folder/label.
Kind of kludgy, but it's the only thing I can think of...
Let me know your thoughts.
After futzing around a bit more on the internet, i've found that some people are able to get the desired "trash button = delete" action if you add your gmail account as an Exchange account instead of as a "Google Account". I haven't tried it yet, but since it isn't dealing with Gmail's odd IMAP implementation, perhaps you will get better results.
Setting up your Gmail account as an Exchange/ActiveSync account doesn't work - I've tested it several times and nothing. I do have my accounts set up as Exchange/ActiveSync because I've heard that it uses less battery than using the "Add Google Email Account" option in WP7.
The only temp-solution I've found is the create a WP7-Trash label and move messages to that folder (for later deletion once you log into the Gmail web interface).
If anyone CAN get the Delete = Trash working on ActiveSync/Exchange setups, by all means let us know!
