[Q] Recovery not working - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What causes recovery's not to work?
When i go from one ROM to another I lose my back up 3 backups back work but not current
If i do three or four back ups one somtimes works

Your recovery could be glitched. You could try reflashing it via PC36IMG file in the bootloader. Also make sure you have $500mb free storage for the backup, otherwis that could cause it to fail as well, causing it to be corrupted.

Backup problems with DInc 2 and CMR

I have s-off and am permanently rooted. I am able to flash and run such roms as CM7.1 and RMK Gingersense from the original .zip file without a problem. However I have been unable to restore a single backup made with ClockworkMod Recovery.
For example, once I flash Gingersense I am unable to restore a backup to CM7.1. If I flash CM7.1 I am unable to restore a backup to Gingersense. In fact, I can't even successfully restore a previous backup of the same rom. I have reloaded CMR several times.
Every time I try to restore a backup, when I reboot I freeze on the white HTC screen. I have tried wiping everything before restoring, but that doesn't help.
It's a pain not being able to play with new roms and variations without being able to painlessly restore from a backup.
Any ideas?

Here are a couple of thoughts.
1 - Is your SD Card full? I had been flashing ROMs and doing back ups a lot recently. As I flashed a ROM to give it a try, I noticed that my back up went very quick. I thought nothing of it, but when I restored that back up, it did not work and caused problems. Looking into things, their was not enough room on the SD Card for the back up to complete all partitions, so it did what it could and finished. You may have several back ups that are incomplete.
2 - You are not waiting long enough for the phone to boot. I have had my phone stuck on the HTC screen for a minute or more before it finally starts the boot animation. If the HTC animation keeps starting over, you have a boot loop, but if it is just on the screen, it may just be taking longer to boot.
I hope this helps.
I had some similar issues at one point. I would try deleting the entire clockwork folder from your SD card and let it recreate when you go back into cwr. That's what worked for me. I believe it was due to some older files that were left behind from prior versions of cwr.

Sounds like the same problem I had. Which was a bad SD card format. You can try to format your SD card via Windows and start all over. One thing to note is when you hook your phone up to your computer and mount it that you must use the safely remove device icon in the system tray. This will cause many problems for you if you don't. Trust me, I learned the hard way!
Thanks for suggestions, but I don't think we've got it yet.
Plenty of room for backups (more than 7 GB) on SD card. Have looked at backup files and am pretty sure they are complete. Backups take the usual amount of time, but I notice the failed restores go more quickly than full new installs.
Always use safely disconnect to disconnect from computer (rarely mount to computer anyway - files are usually sent to phone through Dropbox).
Suppose I can reformat SD card, but what a hassle to copy/paste everything back on.
Will try deleting CMR folder, but don't think there could be vestiges from previous versions since this is the first/only version installed since root.
Any other ideas from the incredibly bright and helpful people on this forum?
Have you tried reflashing recovery?

Yeah, even tried using an earlier version. No joy.

This is your best solution. If it doesn't work then you might have a bad SD card. It is a hassle to format the card but if you want it to work then it's the best solution.
Just a follow-up for anyone who lands on this thread because they have a similar problem.
Following the advice of spizzo03, I completely deleted ClockworkMod Recovery -- the app, the paid license app and the folder on the SD card. I then reinstalled just the free app of CMR from the Market.
Testing by trying to restore one of my backups ... IT NOW WORKS. Goes through the entire restore process -- system, data, cache, etc. -- whereas before it used to stop while restoring system.
Thanks to all who offered suggestions.

Another one here. I was having issues as well restoring backups and simply wiping the sdcard's clockworkmod folder was enough for me.

[Q] Recent backups missing from restore menu in CWM?

I have done a quick search on this but didn't come up with anything that refers to my specific problem.
I did two backups tonight.. one before I went back to stock w/root and one about ten minutes ago once I got back to almost where I was before going back to stock.
Neither one of them are showing up in the menu on CWM recovery?!? I did a Titanium Backup as well as the nandroid bu so I was at least able to get my data back but I really wanted to restore the first backup I made this evening before I had issues and had to restore an older backup... what I'm wondering is where are the backups? I looked in the clockworkmod/backup folder on the sd card and nothing from tonight shows up.. just my previous bu I made before flashing a ROM. Any help?
No ideas huh?
I just did two Nandroids in Rouges custom recovery based on CWM. It's CWM based so I assume this is going to be the same.
OK! Now I would assume they would/should end up the clockworkmod folder but my phone keeps putting them in /emmc/emmc/bmmc/*
I went into that folder, found the two I just did and moved them over to clockworkmod/backup/* and my recovery instantly saw them and I was able to restore to them.
Not sure why this is the way it is, maybe someone else can shed some light?
Like the previous poster mentioned, sometimes different versions/builds of CWM store their backups in different directories. When backups don't show up, usually the backups are all there, just CWM isn't looking for them there.
You may have gotten different versions of CWM inadvertently by installing a ROM that included a kernel with a different version/build of CWM.
If you manually move the backup directory to the place where your current CWM is expecting them, they'll be seen again.

OUCH - Recovery issue

Something happened to my phone. I rebooted, and it just loads to a screen with the signal bars.. Nothing else. I have already wiped, installed my backup, etc. Same issue.
I believe that it has to do with something being deleted while cleaning up my storage, I subsequently backed up after doing this, so that is likely the issue.
I am running rogue's recovery and I cannot get the sd card to mount so that I can put another rom on and flash. It just does nothing what so ever.
Any help fixing the mount issue?
Couldn't you just take the sdcard out and use a reader/writer to put the ROM on?
You could also flash the appropriate "NoData" version of the stock ROM in the ODIN links in my signature. They will preserve your user data and get you booted so you can do more advanced repair work.
Do not delete your nandroid backups even if you think they are bad since you may need to recover portions of them.

Need serious help resetting phone

Ok so I used to have a Samsung Captivate and knew how to root and flash ROMs, was pretty used to it.
I tried to do the same on my HOX, but ran into a bootloop and subsequently I think I've deleted everything on my phone. I used Hasoon2000's All in one kit and unlocked my bootloader, flashed TWRP v 2.3.3.0, but my problem arose after I tried to flash the kernel. It stayed in bootloop so I figured I'd back out and just restore back to the backup I made before flashing the kernel. However, after "successfully" restoring back I was still stuck in bootloop somehow. I know this isn't supposed to happen, it's supposed to restore back to the exact state of your phone at the time.
Anyways, I thought maybe I just needed to wipe things. I looked around and found a source that said to wipe cache, dalvik, factory reset, and system. Wipe those 4, but not external storage or android secure. So I wiped those 4 and I intended to try the backup again but it turns out that cleared everything on my phone. Now when I hit "restore" there is nothing to select. I also used to have a custom rom on the virtual sdcard, but that's gone too.
When in TWRP and I go into "install" the only thing in /sdcard is now TWRP. After looking around, it looks like my only option is to mount the phone to my computer via TWRP and somehow download the standard OS for my One X again. Also in the Mount menu it lists "mount system, mount data, mount cache, mount sd card" I can only check the first 3 options and when I do my computer asks me if I want to format it. I guess I can't mount the sd card because I deleted everything?
If anyone has the time to help me out that would be AMAZING. Right now I don't even care about being able to flash my custom ROM, I just want to get my phone back to functionality. I would love a conversation and would be willing to gmail chat if willing.
Also my phone is the ATT version, 2.20 (or I guess it was before I deleted everything).
Thank you in advance for any help.
I guess the fastest way to get your phone working again is using RUU file, you ll find how to do it here (method 2) or here

Restoring backup doesnt restore kernel ( boot.img ), you have to flash it manually with fastboot.
Dude. U think htc offers same freedom as Samsung . U are WRONG. If u flash a rom or restore a backup. U also need to flash boot.img separately from pc. Use fastboot flash boot boot.img. i assume you know the basics. Htc don't have s-off , so writing to nand protected system storage is restricted. If u read a little you might have got this. This will solve boot loop prob

Thanks Yasounet. I managed to flash viper in the end.

Restore error

Played with too many ROMs today. Soft bricked the phone. Had to put 10g back on, root it and then in recovery do a restore. I did the backup with Phil but the restore with CWM but it says Philz. Said that it fail to mmap aboot. And there was an error loki-ifing the boot image.
It has now been restoring for over 4 hours, so I am not sure it is restoring correctly. Suggestions?
Just decided to pull the battery, install Bountyman's ROM and go from there.
Still can't see SD card, so I decided to load the restore. Can't get it to go past the logo screen. I can install several lollipop ROMs but none see the SD card. Other than going to restore the 10g to file and taking the upgrade to KK, are there any other things I can try?
