Tutorial or guide for upgrading MicroSD card?? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wondering if there is a guide out there for the proper way to upgrade your MicroSD card without losing settings and programs? My card is currently partitioned and I am running MidNight ROM 5.5. I have the latest Bonsai as my recovery tool.
As I recall, there is more to it than just copying the data from one card to another because of the hidden partitions or whatnot. Maybe I'm wrong though. TIA for your help.

no? You don't need to do anything special...copying the data over should be good enough. If your really that paranoid you could dd the old card to the new one.

Format the new one on your pc. The phone doesn't always do a great job.

Don't forget to show hidden files on your windows machine. I think the mount points your partition will be hidden. Not sure if you will have to repartition or not. Best advice I can think of is to ask the dev of your kernel. I could wrong.

Outgrowing SD card, need help ...

I'm outgrowing my 8GB class 2 micro SD ... growing to 16GB.
How do I migrate to a new card?
How do I preserve everything on present SD? app, pics, music etc.
Is it a FAT32 format or ext3 formatted card?
What folders & folder structures are extraneous (ie. left over from previously removed apps) which DO NOT need to move to the new SD?
All ideas, suggestions & previous experiences & best practices welcomed!
Thanks!
Dan
Just copy all the files over to your computer using windows explorer, swap the cards in your phone, then copy it all back.

Sure... do that if you don't mind wondoze corrupting everything on both cards and loading them with virii.
I suggest using the "dd" command under linux. Much stronger.

Never have had this happen to me when switching SD cards and moving data in between them.

I doubt that someone who doesn't even know how to duplicate an SD card has Linux installed.
Just use windows, it works fine.

"corrupting everything on both cards and loading them with virii"
LOLLL
Ya ok, he'll get right on that. Even hypothetically if his machine was full of "virii", they wouldn't have any affect on android. It's just as risky as mounting your sdcard through your usb. (which most users do on a daily basis) Honestly dhkr123, that would be like the most unnecessary route of action for such a simple task.

Agreed, just be sure to format your 16 gig card, while it's in the phone, through settings. Then mount it and copy over the contents of the 8 gig.

My experience root and flash : Leedroid 2.3c amazing

Finally after lots of deliberating I rooted my desire and flashed with Leedroid 2.3c.
It is such an easy process and took less than 2 hours including restoring backup apps.
A2sd+ works like a dream and setcpu has appeared to increase my battery life by about 60%.
Best thing is I am no longer facing that stupid low space notification and I have retained use of HTC sense.
I urge all HTC Desire owners who constantly battle with that low space notification to root and flash.

Exactly what i was thinking of doing! how do you partition your SD card?
Yes done this not so long ago, its what the phone should of been like out the box. loving A2SD+ works great, setcpu only just installed it today. am also using LeeDroid superb rom.
I found the easy way was through windows insert your sd card into your PC and download and install EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition, you can get this from download.com. hope this helps

I've been thinking about doing this myself for quite some time now. After your post here, I might finally give it a go in a few hours... after midnight is best for such things
After doing this, do you still lose access to all apps on SD while connected via USB to your laptop? Or is this issue gone due to SD card partitioning? I would like to force-move quite a lot of stuff onto my class 10 Kingston
You will lose everythink sadly, make sure befor you format you backup your photos, vids, contacts stuff like that. apps you have paid for from market can be downloaded again without paying.

Or your other option is to root your phone first, and then used a backup manager.
Thanks for the help
ext3 best? and also can you set any size?
will the ROM automatically use the ext3 partition when it runs out of space?
I use ext3 am not sure witch is better tho I just went with that. the rom use the partition all the time, like befor I rooted and installed a custom rom my memory was always low, now I have over 100 apps and still have 63MB and 800MB ext3.
I wouldn't go over 1.5GB well thats what Ive been told and read, I just done mine to 1GB 1024mb=1GB

Well done guys for thinking about it. You will surely not regret it. Root and then back up using titanium. Copy backup to pc and then clean flash a rom. Copy back from pc and restore what you need.

It won't work on Windows Professional machines, which is a bummer as it's a great tool.
I use an Ubuntu Live USB boot and use Gparted. Also lets you easily mess with Windows partitions in ways that make Microsoft feel violated
Also gives you a nice little portable OS and since they made an installer to easily create a persistent state Live USB, it's just a handy tool to carry with you if you fiddle with PCs alot.
Well, it seems like I have to drop this issue for now; I've been trying for more than two hours and I did not succeed using unrevoked 3.3 on Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit, Ubuntu 10.4 and Windows 7 x64. I followed all steps, but it only killed some apps on my SD, nothing more.
32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27 (Baseband), 2.6.32.15-gf5a401c [email protected] #1 (Kernel), 2.29.405.5 CL293415 release-keys (Build), 2.29.405.5 (Software), HBOOT 0.93.
One time unrevoked wrote: "Is your firmware too new?"
What am I missing? Can this be done?
I had all sorts of troubled using unrevoked until I finally tried it using a goldcard and it went through first time.

Where exactly are you getting stuck. I used win 7 x64. I also was running the you tube video of how to root with unrevoked simultaneously.

I was just able to root it using Ubuntu Netbook Edition and am currently repartitioning my SD card for ext-support. Here we go!
How long does this usually take? It won't stop and my phone won't charge... well I just aborted this and try with gparted.

No. The main difference between a2sd+ script and froyo's apps2sd is that froyo uses fat32 partition to store apps which have been coded accordingly. The script moves all the apps to the EXT partition which does not need to be mounted nor unmounted for it to be accessed by the PC, therefore it won't interfere with your apps in any way any longer.
Reporting in; I just flashed a ROM onto my HTC Desire for the very first time. Currently running device setup connecting to Wi-Fi. Thank you for convincing me!

[Q] Changing SD-Card

Hey,
I'm selling my HTC Desire so I want to change the SD card back to the original one. I'm using 8GB and want to switch to 4GB. My Desire is rooted with the SGBS Rom on top.
I tried to just copy the data from the 8GB card to the 4gig (deleted MP3s and stuff) and inserted the 4gig in the phone. But all I got was a bootloop. The 8gig is working fine still.
Can you guys tell me what to do now? Would be so nice.

make an ext partition on the 4gb one
How do I do that? Through the recovery?
easiest way is with a program - gparted

Or via 4ext recovery

Or via reading some of the plethora of available guides on how to do that.
Or simply run a RUU. Selling a phone in any other state than full stock is pure idiocy in my book.

+1 on that
Unless you already have a person lined up for buying the (rooted) phone off you already, why narrow the potential buyer range?
I'll avoid creating another topic and ask here. I just bought an 8gb card for my Desire (originally it has a 4gb one). I don't have a A2SD or anything like that currently, but I possible will in the future. The phone is rooted, S-OFFed and runs MIUI. What I did. Made a nandroid backup, copied it and titanium backup files to the desktop using SD adapter, the inserted the 8gig card into the phone, partitioned it with the help of CWR. So I' ve created a 256mb EXT4 partition, 32mb SWAP one, the rest is FAT32. Then I've put the nandroid backup to the new card, booted to recovery and tried to restore it. But the MD5 sum was wrong.. WTF? Am I doing something wrong? Cheers for any help?

Best way to format SD card

Hi I'm pretty sure this won't be an extremely popular topic but just wondering how people go about formatting there sd cards do u just wipe everything save ur backups? Ur photos music? Anything and also is there anything important I shouldn't delete?? Just curious to see how everyone else does it thanx for being nice

Well, you can use your phone to format it by going into settings and storage. You should back up anything you dont want to lose to your pc. I find that the most effective way is to connect the sd card to the pc either in your phone via usb or via a card reader. Then go to my computer, right click on it and hit format. It thould already be in the right file format(fat32) if im not mistaken. Then just place your pics and whatever else back on there and the android system will do the rest. Hope i helped!

If you are working with a removable SD card I'd recommend HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool - v2.1.8. (free)
I had an 8 Gb card sitting around for a while and I wanted to use in my daughter's new phone. I put the card in the PC and deleted everything. Then I thought just format the damn thing. It seemed to only think it had 40 Mb. Windows would not format it to anything over 40 Mb. I had to download the HP tool and it would allow formatting to the full 8 Gb.
Hi,
Not sure if this is the right place.. I just installed coredroid 1.2 and my sd card is not detected. Removed the sd card. Complete format then reinsert still doesnt solve the problem. I am able to use the card using a card reader. Any suggestions

It sounds like you are formatting an existing (previously used) card? Do you have some issue with the card? Or just switching between devices? Can't see it making much difference using the built-in Windows disk management tool to format, using the phone to do it, or some other method.
I think even switching between devices, I haven't bothered to re-format, just deleted the files manually and swapped the card into the new phone.
For new cards, I don't even bother to format. They are always pre-formatted to FAT32, AFAIK. So I just insert it in the device and go . . .

how do you move apps to external sd card ? before there used to be option to move to sd card now i don't see that .. i had this problem ever since i upgrade to cm10 and now on aokp....
I use SDformatter.
It's better than just with right click and select format.

if you have just one partition formated with fat32 on your sd-card, you can format it with windows-tools. if there is another partition (ext2/3/4) on your card, its not possible to format the sd-card completely with this tools and you need, as written above, an external tool like that from HP.
Beside this, i don't really understand why you want to do this, except you have a problem with your card...
i wiped my sd card with h.d.d low level format ! now i cant create right ext partition now . how can i do that ? i did everything with partition magic software . but not use .
If you have a Linux box and an SD card read use gparted. If you don't the best/fastest way is with a good recovery in an android phone

Backup Linux Deploy running on Ext4 (SD Card) Partition

Hi guys,
I've been using Linux Deploy on my Gaslaxy Tab (GT-P5220) for a while now, however have only just deviced to give it a go on an Ext4 partition on my SD card, which works great!
I'm wanting to back up EVERYTHING in this partition, so as, in the event something goes wrong, I can simply re-partition/format my SD card and transfer the data across, and hopefully start up my Linux without any fuss.
Anyone able to suggest the best way of doing this?
Cheers!
