[Q] Modems and ping questions - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a few questions about modems. I am using srf 1.2 and the genocide kernal. After I flashed I compared my wifes stock epic with mine.
I used speed test and it seems like mine is worse than stock for ping and dl and ul speeds. I thought mine would be bettsr, just seems kind of odd.
Sometimes my ping can reach up to 1600. I know that is really crappy. So my question is if I flash a new modem would this help me? It seems like alot of people are using eeo3. Is that a good one?
Also people claim that there batteries die fast after a modem flash. Why is that? Do you just have to use voltage controll to calibrate your battery?
Thanks

Our Epics are strange that way. Each one seems to have a mind of its own. When changing modems and/or ROMs its good to wipe the battery stats after you charge it to full. You do that in the "Advanced" settings in your Clockwork recocery. It takes a day or two for your battery to settle in after a change. Its best to try out all of the modems and see which one works best for your phone. Also, run the test multiple times.

Ok so flash a modem, wipe batt after full charge, then run multiple speed tests untill I find a modem I like?
I am on srf1.2 and genocide. I think my modem is eco5. Will all the modems work on the download page in the forums with my current setup?
I thought I read somewhere that some modems don't like eco5? Like dk18. Is there any modems I should stay away from?
Thanks

I am on ec03 and it works well

I ran that same combo for a while and IMO the battery did what it does best: SUUUUUUUUCK%$#^& ! .......that been said it's been like that pretty much all the time, if you really use the phone that is, not complaining at all, just saying. That's why I always carry a spare one. There are way too many variables and setup preferences that might differ from one user to the next and if you overclock the thing uses even more juice. Really love the 3.3 Rom but the lack of 3G deal in my case forced me to reflash in a different direction........Good Luck !
What do you mean by lack of 3G ?

Exactly that......no 3G, very very poor signal if any, I thought it was just me but after reviewing the ongoing 3.3 thread I found out that some people are experiencing this issue too, very small % though. In my case I was with T-Mobile for quite a while, fantastic service but poor signal-coverage at my business location so I switched to Verizon which really rocks signal-coverage-wise until now......sooooo......I really love the ROM and really hope for a feasible fix to get back to it.
it has to be a downed tower or old prl the rom/kernel dont control the phone calls so id say to check with vzw and run the appropriate updates, hope it gets fixed for ya
I'm using KK BFS #5 and the latest SkyRaider and I've got no such issues. No 3G troubles, no battery suckage, no weird stability issues...
Seems all ok for me. I'm happy with the combination. Sedio 1750 battery, BTW.
I do have SetCPU installed, interactive governor, and a profile to lower the clock speed to 612MHz when the screen is off. When awake, the phone is overclocked one notch to 1036MHz.

Not too sure where you heard this from. Could you post a link? I've used nothing but KingXKernel's on various Sense-based ROM's, and I've used SetCPU to tweak each and every one of them.

I've been running KK#5-BFS on SR 3.3, and my battery life (stock battery) has been pretty fantastic. Of course, that's completely relative, and I'm not a super heavy user, but with all other variables being constant, my battery life has definitely improved since going with this combo. You just have to be intelligent with your SetCPU settings, profiles, and phone settings.

I initially had the same 3G issues with SR 3.3, but ihtfp69 has since fixed these problems with 3.3.1, and my 3G has been flawless ever since.
I use king kernel BFS #5 with setcpu and i get some pretty amazing battery life
I am running the same combo with ROM and kernal minus the SetCpu and forget to charge my phone overnight. So for over 24hrs I was at 29% battery life. This is the best combo I've experienced so far for great battery life. Make sure you do a full system wipe, once you Flash the ROM..
does anyone find that charge times have increased after installing king's kernel 5? It may be just my imagination but I wanted to see if anyone has seen the same

[Q] Best modem for EH17?

I know there's not really any answer, but anyone know what the best modem is for battery life on the Hurricane ROM? I've tried EG22 and EH17, and both really suck. I've heard that EC05 is good, but I'm not sure. Any suggestions?
modem rarely seems to impact my battery, it's all about the rom/kernel/config..
For me, EH17 has increased my data speeds and my reception. I now get 4G where I didn't with any modem after EB13, 1 more bar on 3G and faster speeds over WiFi.
GPS is the about same as all other leaked GB modems, but slightly less accurate than EH06; I'd get as close as 3m with EH06 but 6m with EH17. Sitting in the same spot.
On a suggestion I tried the EE03 modem on EH17 to stop the random reboots but still get 1 a day at home on WIFI. I do get 5 out of 9 satellite lock with this though. None seem to affect my battery life. Battery life will be affected by modem if you are primarily in a low signal area. Then you would have to try each one to see if any give you better signal and don't make the phone hot when losing signal. Heat is an indication of battery drain.
Alright, thanks guys. I just knew it was my modem that was causing some things because I was on the EG22 one, and battery life sucked. Then when I had EH17, I could see it was draining the battery even more.
Strangely, though, the EH17 modem now seems to be really good. In my house, I'm getting 4-5 bars where I usually get 2 and no time without signal. I've had it on its charger though so I'm not sure if the battery will be any better, but I'd assume it would be.
Thanks for the help everyone!
edit: okay, so when I leave the phone alone it has good signal. Then I use it for something and it goes to none or 2 back and forth. wtf?

I have seen this also; it doesn't seem to effect the performance any, at least that I have seen.
I hope EI05 is better; EH17 modem seems better but the ROM reboots way more (for me anyway) I'm back on EG22 w/EH17 modem.

Yeah, I do too. I'm not going back to EG22 so I'll just live with it.
I think I found w00t with the ERA FatFree, no reboots and I'm using the EH17 modem.
I get much better signal since eh17. Ec05 was dropping my bars constantly.

EH 17 sux for wimax
The EC05 out performs EH17 in the wimax arena. Ifn I were able to get my head in the codez I would look into why that is.
I was able to hold a steady weak connection with ec05. When I tried the eh17 on RAE hurricane 1.6 it would never hold a connection in a weak area.

[Q] Whats the Best SETCPU settings and profile for my Epic Touch?

I got rooted using Odin and LostKernel. Trying to get the best SETCPU setup and profiles. Can anybody Share there setting and profiles. How much battery life are you getting? I just got this phone Tuesday. Help!!!
Another Thing is anybody having Bad Wifi reception? my phone can be right next to the router and still wont get all wifi bars. i go to my kitchen or room and forget about it and barely connects to my wifi.
Ok 80 views and no responses so I'll bite. There are so many variables here that I could type a page or two but I will start at the end. You may need to try out a few different kernels to see which works best for you. People are having the best stability/battery life and least issues on the stock based kernels. If you use one of the overclock kernels, you may end up having LOS issues. You really have to try them. Wifi no good, try another. I am grabbing Wifi signal from the tenant who lives in the apartment below me (I am the manager so its ok..lol) I don't have any profiles set up. I let the phone do its thing. I am using the EG30 Rev 5 kernel since I am on EG31 modem. Since you are currently on LoSt, try EG30 stock w/CWM5 or Rogue stock w/ recovery. If you want to overclock try the Rogue overclockable kernel

I have always been of the position that Samsung has probably already put a lot of thought into the clock speed, and you probably should juat leave it be. Setcpu came into being a few years ago when phones handled the comprimise between battery life and clock speed poorly, it really is not need is anymore.

Yeah, if you want to overclock or undervolt then its useful but for profiles I just leave those be. I mean if I am not using my phone its in deep sleep or running at 200. The scaling seems really dialed in to me

This is the first phone I have not used SetCPU on. The Samsung kernel seems to do every thing on its own. I would recommend not using it at all.

No oc or uving, this is complete stock KL1 kernel they way it came with the phone. I actually had great battery life (about 17 hours) on stock, but I switched to other custom kernels and didnt have so great battery life. So, I was looking for a stock kernel and in the end made this one and flashed today. So battery life should be like stock.

Thanks. I am getting ****ty battery life also. I have tried everything, faux's, bullet, synergy's different versions, Gideon's UV scripts, underclocking, undervolting, with complete wipe, different roms, you name it. I still I lose 20+% battery per hour while I read on my phone. 10-11% if its idle. Completely ridiculous. Just tonight I thought of trying the stock kernel. Plus anytime my phone is awake, the top portion of my phone gets hot. I'm hoping its a kernel issue.

That sounds really bad. I was getting horrible battery life on other kernels but not that bad (i got around an average of 7-8 hours on custom kernels). However, one thing about stock kernel is that once you flash it, you have to give it 2-3 days -sometimes more- to get full capacity battery life (around 17 hours heavy use for me).
I'll test it out. My only concern was that the phone would warm up for no reason. The only time my phone can save battery is in flight mode. 7 hours in flight mode take about 5-8% battery. So the issue is most likely radio/kernel related IMO. Even having sync/data off didn't help much. I also average 7-8 hours. It's just that when I have the phone on to a dark screen with white text on it (opera mini, it has no fancy stuff, good reader browser) I would lose at least 15% in about 45 minutes. This is with no music, no data activity at the lowest brightness setting.
So this is my battery life after the first day. I would say today was lots of heavy use for me. Usually around this time im charging from dead, but with this kernel I still have 30 percent left to go. So about 15-16 hours on one charge with heavy use .I've tried all the custom kernels and this is the best I've ever gotten....
This one helped lots. I unplugged my phone at 1AM (100% charged) and then put it in flight mode. At 7AM I turned off flight mode and had used up 1% in 6 hours. From then till 3:30 I went down to 50%.
shehrammajid,
Thanks for the stock kernel. I am also trying to learn how to build a stock kernel. I have made a post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22845175
Can you please take a look at my steps and see where I am going wrong? Also can you post the guide you followed by bubby323?
Thanks.

[Q] Why is my battery so bad on ICS? Can I downgrade to GB?

I'll try to make this as simple as possible.
On VeNuM's GB ROM, I was getting at least a day on my battery, it was fantastic. Modem was EL29 (I believe, possibly 26 though). I could use the phone a lot and it still got good battery life. With the verizon PRL, forcing roaming 24/7, I could almost get two days on it since there was less time it was "Searching for service"
Now on ICS (have done stock, calk, venum), I have been getting dreadful battery life. Take it off the charger at 9 and by 3, after using the phone during my hour commute, it's dead. The place that I work has pretty bad service for sprint, barely hovers at 1 bar if I even have service at all. One thing I have also noticed is that even on stock (and stock PRL), my phone does not seem to roam, at all.
Here was day one on FE22 stock: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mwjr5j3nd5vgody/2012-06-06 15.36.08.png
Day one calk FE22: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0lroppsxl1bzbup/2012-06-07 18.14.04.png
Battery 2nd: https://www.dropbox.com/s/pttz5fla4us8evk/2012-06-07 18.14.08.png
You'll notice that there are a few bumps at the end. I did have it charging on the comp for a little bit before I left work, those are the two spikes. HOWEVER, it also rose on its own. It went down to 5% and then went UP to 6%, staying there for a bit and then going down.
There seems to be something funky going on, but I just dont know what. I'm currently testing what the difference is with the verizon PRL, I have that on there now.
Are there some battery logs I can post to perhaps decode this puzzle?
-----------------------------
Second question. How do I go about downgrading from ICS to GB?
Thanks a lot.
You should try calibrating your battery and wiping the battery stats at 100%. That would speed up the settling in.
I suggest using sfhubs Odin one click package to revert back to GB.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Something is keeping your phone awake. Download badass battery monitor and check whats using up your battery.!
I'll do that right now. I just took it off the charger an hour ago and it's down to 85, just sitting in my pocket. I'll let it charge back up to 100 and then clear battery stats. I'll use it today and if it's still bad, revert to GB.
You look at the pics? They're depressing.
i definitely think you have apps causing wakelocks. try disabling dropbox, facebook and other random programs that sync, same goes for other stuff u may have polling for updates. with exchange syncing every 15 minutes i think i get better battery life vs push. Kobridge tweaks helped a ton.
white signal bars- cm9, the other is stock fe22 w/kobridge
id defintely search the forums for better battery stats (the dev made it available for free to xda users) or badass battery monitor in the market (also free)
I'm on Kobridge aggressive! I tried moderate as well.
Can anyone else confirm the first reply as to how to downgrade to GB? A direct link would be nice as well.

Battery life is not as good on ics and I too had the same the same problem. System monitor wouldn't pick up any program eating up CPU. Took me for a few day to realize I had a bad install. I had to Odin back to el26 and re install. That seemed to fix my problems. Which is my understanding is the procedure one is supposed to take when flashing from ics. So regardless your flashing back GB everytime you flash roms. but might want to give ics another shot when you flash correctly.

Must say it took me several weeks to find the right combination of parts to get my battery right.
I found that several of the newer modems were overheating my phone and draining my battery in a couple hours. Right now I'm running wicked ff02 rom, agats ff02 kernel and fe21 modem. Battery never get above 90 degrees; and yesterday I got an 8 hour day of work with heavy use (no mid day charge).
Edit: I tried venums boa rom, with very good results too. He included badass battery monitor, which seems to be one of the best of the bunch.

I did downgrade back to GB, running Blazer's EL29 rom with verizon PRL right now and from what I saw it was decent, even through the first battery cycle with the ROM. I'll see how it runs this weekend.
If I want to go back to ICS, can I flash straight from EL29 or should I flash the EL26 kernel first and then upgrade?

ICS Battery life
I have been running "Wicked Sensations" now for 4 days, with the FF09 Modem. I also added the FF11 Kobridge Tweaks to the mix using the aggressive zip. I have been getting roughly 15 to 18 hours out of my battery. I keep my screen about 15% on the slider for brightness. I am heavy user and this seems to be the best combination for my SII. I came from Calkulin's 3.0 GB... If you decide to go back to ICS, this combination. Good luck.
