This is because your PS3 will only find wifi that is infastructure. The wifi tether from your phone is ad-hoc. There is a way to tether infastructure, but i'm just not quite familiar with it right now cause i never need to do it; but running a search for "how to wifi tether infastructure" should easily populate some good results.
You need to use the hotspot hack for infrastructure mode. If you are on a stock odexed ROM you need to make sure you flash the odexed mod and flash the deodexed mod if you're on a deodexed ROM.
Try different wifi tether there is like beta 6 through 10 or put a ROM on phone with hacked wifi hot spot

thankx for the help bros
Hey guys..is there any way to tether without rooting? I see that we have a bluetooth tether option, but that doesn't seem to be working. If rooting is the only way, what apps actually work to get tethering on the S3? Thanks.

Wireless Tether for Root works with stock ICS rom without issue. Just download latest version off the Market. If you are on JB then nothing currently works.
Also...this should be in Q&A section not General.

Hello,
I did a search, but the only reference to tethering seem to involve custom ROMs. I have rooted the stock phone and need to use wifi tethering for my Win8 tablet. Is this possible? I tried turning on tethering in the phone settings, but it says to contact AT&T. So I downloaded a wifi tethering program, but no wifi hot spots show up on my tablet.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

there are touchwiz-based roms (if you prefer that look/style) in the Android Development section and AOSP-based roms in the Original Android section. look over both sections to see what you might like. read up. most touchwiz roms have been modified and have native tethering. tethering is also standard on the AOSP roms.
installing a custom recovery and rom are covered in the attached directions. cheers

Yes, I'd like to stay on stock, so I'll look for barnacle. Thanks!
Keep in mind to some providers can track it and will charge u or shut off data till u add feathering to ur plan. I have been doing it on ATT with no issue but I have had friends on provider like straight talk that have experienced this

Got Barnacle but it's not working. Says "Wifi: Could not set ad-hoc mode of wlan0: Operation not supported on transport endpoint". I suspect it's some monkeying around by AT&T...
I already told you that you can find a stock based rom in the Android development section that has tethering established on it. That feature will be listed among the other features in the rom OP. Do some reading/research for yourself if you truly want tethering instead of leaning on a half-baked app supplied by someone who's intel comes from straight talk friends. These developers are on this site for a reason...they're the best. Cheers
What's the ROM version on your phone? Flashable mods have been made for all the stock ROMs...
Assuming you're on the stock AT&T 4.1.1 release, you'll need to flash a modified framework-res.apk in order to tether.

Im also on a rooted but stock ATT rom. Foxfi worked until the jellybean update. What changes when you flash the modified framework?

I'm looking man... The search is trash with broad topics like this, it just reorganizes the threads... So far I've found flashable mods for LEM and LG1... I thought someone made it for LK3...

Wow... XDA search is absolute trash... all it did was reorganize the threads... Would you have a problem with flashing a stock ROM with the mods you need?
Thanks for the help. Ive been running up against a brick wall on this.

Well people built flashbale mods to enable it for I thought was all the SW versions, I only found older sw versions... Are you opposed to flashing a whole ROM?
No, Im not opposed to flashing a new rom.
I wont loose anything by doing that right?

I live in sweden and i recently got a t-mobile galaxy s2. i am trying to usb tether and wifi tether, but when I check the box it get unchecked again, and the wifi tether slider refuses to toggle state to on. I installed kies on windows 7 which can recognize the device as a storage device but i can not use the device as a modem. My guess is that the application on the phone that allow me to tether is some what locked or work with T-mobile and not with providersin sweden and thus I might need to install a custom android Rom from. I looked for solutions over the internet and I could not find much, I even reinstalled android via kies, but that did not help. Please help, what should I do, and if I need to install a rom which is the best one that support viper and other popular applications, because I installed one time xdaandroid on my old HTC, but viper application said that their team does not support custom made Roms. Thanks

Hi guys,
I've ben reading on the forums for a lot of different version for Wifi tether on 4.3 but all of the available ones are based on TW Roms. Is there any free full Wifi tether app if you have the original 4.3 from tmobile. I already have root, just can't find one that works.
Thanks!

Have you tried this one? I think you can get it working if you mess with the settings right...
