I could use a lil help =/ - Defy General

Hi fellow xda members! I am currently experiencing a small issue and was hoping for a little help. I an currently running the 7-23-11 CM7 Nightly. Ive had this issue since using CM7. No matter what baseband I try, or names, model numbers, manufactures etc I'm build prop I can still not get all the apps in the android market. Even some of the ones I've paid for. Any insight would be awesome. Thx in advance

Let's verify a few things:
Did you flash a leaked sbf to install cm7 or did you use a stock froyo sbf? And which one did you use?
Did you follow the following procedure to the letter? What did you do different?
Code:
I First flash any Froyo leak of your choice (from here SBF - Service Flash - all files + fixed sbf + Bootloaders - xda-developers)
II Turn USB Debugging ON
III Root via SuperOneClick
IV Reboot
V Install 2nd Init Recovery Installer 1.4 (from here [APP] 2ndInit Recovery Installer v1.4 [Updated: 7-May-2011] - xda-developers)
VI Turn USB Debugging OFF
VII Reboot your device 2 times
VIII Copy CM7 , Google Apps 20110613 (market, gtalk, etc.)
IX Reboot your device, when the blue led lights at Motorola logo, press Volume Down to enter Bootmenu
X Go to "Set Default Bootmode" then select [2ND INIT BOOT]
XI Go to "[Custom Recovery] start"
XII Select "wipe cache partition" then "wipe data/factory reset"
XIII Select "install zip from sdcard", "choose zip from sdcard", then select the CM7 zip
XIV Select "choose zip from sdcard" then select "gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip"
XV Select "+++++Go Back++++++" then "reboot your system now"
thx to St.John from techenclave.com
did you try this gapps version? It should work because the defy uses a ARMv7 cpu
It could you also be a problem with the permissions wich were set after the install of the gapps package ...

@zorofroozo As for the SBF I flashed the Nordic SBF recomended for use with CM7. As for how I installed i followed the FAQ to the letter and have recently performed another full wipe(Wipe Cache, Wipe Data, Wipe Dalvik, Wipe Battery STats) then installed cm7-110723-1251-BOOT179-4-Jordan.zip along with gapps-gb-20110613-signed.zip. Other than that im not running anything special aside from my own setting for Clock speeds. Should i redo the whole procedure?

well, I was just curious if there were any differences in the installation procedure.
Some sidenotes
*To run a nightly you should use the unstable recovery. To run a normal release, you should use stable recovery.
*You need to install gapps AFTER you've installed CM.
When you flash CM7 on an install which already runs CM7, I believe you are doing an upgrade. Possibly even after you've wiped all caches you're still stuck with the upgrade. Now, you could try to go back to your stock rom and do an official sbf upgrade through "motorola software update". Make sure all google apps work correctly, if not, try installing them. Only when they are working, then try installing CM7. You will not need to flash another sbf (nordic, etc.) before flashing CM7, the official froyo is enough.

@zorofroozo Yea ill do the whole process again. I'll post the results when I'm finished. Thx for the input.

To upgrade to nightly or from rc1 to rc1.5:
1. Download update and copy to sd

To downgrade to Stock rom it is very simple:
1.Download RSD lite and Motorola usb drivers to flash SBF file.
2.Download Stock froyo SBF for your region(Search xda forum)
3.Check USB debugging on your phone and connect to the pc and wait until all motorola drivers install.
4.Open RSD lite(right click and open as a administrator). It will show connected. Now select the sbf file you located on the system and click start and wait till it completes 100% process. thats it. it will flash your phone to stock froyo and it will automatically restart and boot.
Note: Some times when rebooting after RSD lite flash your phone stuck in bootloop(M logo or it continously loading in Android menu). It is better to go to stock recovery(Hold the vol - button and then power button and then release it. you will get android logo with exclamatory symbol. Press vol - and vol + button at the same time to get in to stock recovery). Select wipe data/factory and wipe cache.

hi,
nice Guide
If you come from 2.51 and want to keep the downgradeability like me,
you can do the following:
-Do Step 1 and 2 of the initial Guide
-Download the fixed SBF and the CM Backup from here
-Copy CM Backup to your SDCard
-Root your Phone via Oneklick
-Install Defy Recovery and install the Recovery System
-Boot in Recovery Mode (pwr+vol_down)
-Install the copied .zip file
-Boot into bootloader (pwr+vol_up)
-flash the fixed sbf
-reboot
-proceed with step 5 of the initial Guide

So I can't use T-Mobile USA official 2.2 as my firmware? Then root and flash recovery, then flash cm7? No?
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
great work, but 8. step is not necessary, 2ndInit has alredy been installed in the 5. step.
some 2.51 defys have sd card mounting problem in recovery 2.5.1.8
mine is one of them
i have to flash a rom above 2.51 and recovery works fine
Lol, if I had read this post I shouldn't pass all the morning trying to flash to CM7. At least I did it, hehehe. Thanks to all the posts here.

I'm afraid not. The linked ROM is a full (i.e. not fixed) ROM. However, according to Quarx you can use fixed SBF (which preserves downgradibility). You can find one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537.

Yeah I know step 8 isn't really needed but people might think u simply install the app and leave it.
As for the question about the t-mobile ROM You should be able to use it, I just prefer to use the same base as the dev to avoid any potential problems

If you're using the Aussie ROM then the fixed UK ROM doesn't seem to work unfortunately. I really want to give this a try to, but I'm afraid if I flash up to 2.2 and something goes wrong I'll never get my phone back to working order >.<
Fellow Aussie here, but got my phone outright off eBay. Lost downgradability ages ago. Anyhoo there's a thread on installing cm7 on a Telstra ROM So u might wanna check that out

Installing CM7

So, I've decided to upgrade my Defy since I'm still using Eclair, CM7 seems to be the best option now so if anyone can help me out here.
Does Titanium Backup saves the backups on the SD ? Also, I'm doing a backup on my apps, what else should I ? And how do I backup my contacts ?
Where do I get the last stable CM7 version ?
Is this guide and faq up-to-date ?

Thanks.
ps: for brazilian users:
CM7 funciona de boa na Claro ? 3G etc ?
Titanium on sd-yes, backup your apps using titanium. As for contacts, if you have look out app, you can use it or you can use google sync . Settings>accounts> google accouny>sync contacts. Or you can export it to sd card. Or search the market for that

-new bootmenu doesn't need reboot two times.
Thanks, to both of you
Update:
Installed it yesterday without any issues, thanks for the guide marhensa
So far the only problems I'm having is:
Can't run Plants vs Zombies, it shows the hourglass loading then goes to the home screen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15302341#post15302341
And for some reason it didn't saved my contacts on my google account, not that much of a problem since I wasn't using it much, but I thought I'd be able to get the contacts from the SIM card but for some reason it just says it's empty, I've been using this SIM card for about 7 years now, shouldn't it have all the contacts ?
um...
i always use google contacs, it's more efficient,
and you don't loose your contacts when you change the rom, or lost your phone.
but i don't know,
if google turns ugly and evil,
it's seems we have give them lots of our friends' phone number and email.
about plants vs zombie,
i don't know, i'm not install it yet.
but other game runs more smooth and good, because new 3d drivers.

what you have to do right now,
you go and search edited leaked gingerbread 2.3.4 sbf for that.
the edited sbf gingerbread 2.3.4 automatically rooted.
but the problem is i don't have the link for that.
but i'm sure i ever see that in this forum.
why you have to search that edited 2.3.4 sbf?
because normal leaked gingerbread 2.3.4 can't be rooted!
if you cannot root, you can't install custom recovery..
if you cannot install recovery, you cannot restore froyo nandroid backup!
and froyo nandroid backup + froyo fixed sbf is the only hope right now.
sorry mate..
next time be prepared and be careful to read the warnings.
hey astroblasto,

[Q] Latest radio on Wildfire but GPS still do not work :(

Hello.
Well, i have read NOW WORKING - Alpharevx + Clockwork + CM7 + Radio/GPS Fix.
Did that - nothing happen.
I have:
HTC Wildfire
Android Verison: 2.3.7
Mod version: CyanogenMod 7.1.0.1-buzz
Radio Version: 3.35.20.10
I have tried all - but GPS icon doesn't appear, try GPS Essenstials (all the time just: no fix, network location disabled).
Nothing happens in Google maps or iGO.
Help needed!!!
Thanks in advance for all the help!
Take a nandroid backup of your cm7, then flash a sense rom which has gps working download google maps turn on gps and let it get a fix. Don't touch any settings after this..
Leave it for a few minutes and then restore your nandroid backup.
I haven't personally tested this way myself so don't know if it'll work but have read of others doing it this way with success.
Confirmed. It worked for me + this is the safest way to fix it, no messing with the radios, terminal emulator etc.

Does anyone have suggestion which sense?
Any. It can be your stock ROM nandroid backup also. (Assuming you had taken one). If not, the Stock Sense ROM is a good idea:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877977
Sorry for late response.
Well i have try to load:
multiupload.com/JSAWVUC88O
but all i get is Installation aborted. I did signature toogle etc but everytime unable to install. It has just wiped out my contacts and sms messages.
Any other ideas? =)
Are you sure you are using Clockworkmod 2.x to flash that? Also try a redownload. If it didn't flash, it can't erase anything on your phone (Unless you did a Wipe data / Factory Reset, THAT will erase contacts / messages. Not a failed ROM flash)
Well i have Rom Manager v4.5.0.1 (Flash clockworkMod Recovery 5.0.2.0)
Well i can find in All clockworkmod Recoveries versions like:
* 3.0.0.6
* 2.5.1.4
* 2.5.1.3
etc
* 5.0.0.8
* 5.0.1.0
Thats all =)
Guide me please =)
Anything starting with 2.x will work. Here's another way:
- Download this attachment (update1.zip) and place on your SDCard
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=662193&d=1311319218
- Then reboot in Clockworkmod Recovery (5.0.2.0) or any version you are having at the moment
- Choose Install Zip from SDCard, then, Choose Zip from SDCard, then select the update1.zip file, it will flash it (Just like a ROM flash)
- It will reboot your phone and will give you temporary Clockworkmod 2.5.0.7 (Green Text)
- Here, now select 'Wipe Data / Factory Reset', and again select 'Install Zip from SDCard' > 'Choose Zip', and select the Froyo ROM Zip file. It should install now.
BTW, Try reflashing the radio before doing this. I doubt you reflashed the Radio if you are not aware of this. Radio's also need Clockworkmod 2.x. If reflashing the radio doesn't work, then you can follow what I wrote above.
Well i have downloaded from wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Wildfire:_Support_Downloads last version .31 and install it so i think a have latest one.
But ok - i will try later also your way and we will see.
What will it happen if i will try to downgrade radio to 3.35.19.25? Will be the same or it will damage something?
No, there shouldn't be any issues downgrading a radio.
@3xeno - ok, now i have Froyo ROM running. OK, GPS works. =)
Now, how can i go back to CyanogenMod? Or can't go back? Because I do like CyanogenMod but i hate that GPS doesn't work.
Thanks for all your help.
Keep GPS running after it gets a fix, and upgrade to Cyanogenmod again, as you had done previously (Don't turn off GPS/change any settings). This time, GPS should work on Cyanogenmod. Refer the 2nd post in this thread.
hm... strange.. - had the same issue after reinstalling CM. reflashing new radio (actually the same 3.35.20.10 from the CM official page like is in installation package) helped and everything works now. So, I repeat, - install CM7, and after that download latest radio from the CM webpage and flash it like 3xeno wrote in the beginning. Restart and whuollah..) -works in my case... No need to install Froyo, stock HTC and blablabla
Uff, finally!!!
Thanks @3xeno and for all the help! I have started in Froyo iGO, load backup in ROM Manager and now GPS signal is working!
Thanks for all the help again!
And thanks @doofos for reply.
Wuiiii =)
- take my congratulations. And, may be it'll help somebody else, (it is not a new thing - like read the FAQ, but anyway) - don't forget to perform those things before flashing new CM :
- wipe data/factory
- wipe cache partition
- mounts and storage -> format system -especially(realized it on my experience, -in that case GPS started work from-the-box

I have the same problem which is being discussed above..
Can I reflash the radio using CWM 5.x.x.??
My radio is 3.35.15.31
It was the default radio which came when put CM7 in my wildfire..
Or do u recommend upgrading the radio to 3.35.20.10
Pls help..
You can't flash radios on anything that's 3.0+
You can use the .zip I attached in the attachment to gain a "temporary" 2.5 recovery, that goes away once you reboot.
N what about updating my radio..??
what do u suggest..?? Should i update from 3.35.15.31 to 3.35.20.10..??
N also do i need to do a complete wipe before flashing a new radio..??
Can u guide me to a link which completely describes "how to flash a new radio"..??
Thnxx in advance..!!

Best 2.2 roms?

I just rooted my phone and am currently running (2.3.7 MIUI) and love it. A buddy of mine is jealous and wants me to do his. He is running 2.2, what are the most polished roms out there for that android version and could you please give me a link for the download?
Thanks for any help, Im new to this and just want to make sure I don't flash a crap rom for the guy.
Thanks

edit: just an observation, the NANDroid backup is optional, i didn't do it and my phone works fine.
and try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353146&highlight=icsmiuidsj
i use it on my defy, its a miui version of ICS with GoLauncherEx as launcher, its very nice
note: i didn't know if you want other sbf of 2.2 froyo, but thats my interpretation
The first two links aren't even for 2.2? Or am I missing something?
let me see if i got this, you want CM7 for 2.2? or do you want some 2.2 versions?
Any good Roms for android 2.2 whether its cm7, miui etc.
CM7 is 2.3 (Gingerbread). CM6 is 2.2 (Froyo), but I don't think that the Defy is supported. You better switch to Gingerbread .
Or, if you are referring to the kernel used, then yes, CM7 works fine with 2.2 and it's a good choice.

Why not flash up to 2.3? That's like saying you want to stay on Windows 2000...
and what's the big difference between flashing a 2.2 rom and flashing a 2.3 rom?
I just wanted to do less work and stay with 2.2 lol, but if your saying 2.3 is better I might as well just upgrade to 2.3 and then flash a custom 2.3 rom. This would require using rsdlite and then flash an official 2.3 stock rom correct?(where can I find the links for these again)
If I do that, which 2.3 roms would you guys recommend?
Like I said, this is still all very new to me.
Thanks again for the help.
Hello,
I read the discution and I can say you that upgrade in 2.3 (or more) is as easy as instal 2.2.
My defy was like yours in MIUI 2.3.7 and the installation will be the same for your friend. You can install CM7 or Miui for your friend.
And if you want to change, you can install zip from recovery with full wipe.
Sorry for VERY bad english.
So I have to flash a stock 2.3 ROM and then I can flash a 2.3.x custom rom? Is that correct?
If so, can someone post a link of the "stock" rom I need to flash?
Thanks
I thought the only stock ROMs for defy were 2.2? I have a RAZR too & now I'm getting very confused going back & forth between forums!

Thanks for the help but I no one is really answering my question. If running android 2.2 can I just root it and flash a CUSTOM 2.3 rom (CM7 or MIUI) or do I need to "uprgrade" to a stock 2.3 rom first THEN flash a custom 2.3 rom!?!?!?
thanks
You can flash directly.
Trimis de pe Defy CM7
Dude, please, just root your friends phone, than install 2ndint 2.0, than copy cm7 to defy's sd card, rebot it into recovery and flash cm7
1º : Root It, use SuperOneClick
2º : Install 2ndint 2.0 [ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212 ]
3º : Copy Cm7 to sd card
4º : Go to Recovery
5º : Then Custom Recovery
6º : Then Install from ZIP SDcard
7º : Select your cm7 zip
8º : At the end of the installation go to Go back
9º : Select "Wipe data / factory reset" and confirm
10º : Select "Wipe Cache" and confirm
11º : Then go to "Advanced"
12º : Select "Wipe Dalvik Cache"
13º and last one : reboot system, don't worry, it takes a little longer, just wait a few minuts and you should have cm7
@diogo65, o copy your tuto, too lazy to write all that down
Thanks guys...for some reason I was under the impression that I had to upgrade to android 2.3 before I could flash a custom 2.3 rom.
nah, cm7 can be flashed over froyo, or over Gingerbread, you choose
follow the steps that i write, and you should have cm7 with no problem.
i recommend Miui v4 or wait for cm9
Thanks MrNiick. I ended up flashing MIUI.US 2.1.20 (got the link off of the defy wiki page) onto this phone, the same rom Im running.
What is MIUI V4 and how does it differ from 2.1.20?
Thanks!
actualy, v4 is the new version with ICS.
2.1.20 have android 4.0.3?
in my first post here in this thread, you can find a custom version, with a different launcher, i don't like miui launcher.
but, you can find the same version in miui's site, [ http://miuiandroid.com/community/threads/miui-rom-2-2-17-gb-all-devices.15415/ ]
ps: sorry didn't answer before, i'm at school all day

Also all this people who are asking about how to activate HWA or discuss about governors...
Fot the umpteenth time, HWA is set by default in all latest Nightlies by Epsylon and Quarx. And Epsylon have also already included DroidX governors back in May. His so called BOOSTED is based on boostedASSv2. And boostedASSv2 is SMARTASSv2 with other values, working according to the same principle. Here you compare both.
So there is no need to ask for other governors or recommend the "old" DroidX ones. Just open bootmenu and choose your favourit one.
Because of such posts the thread really gets spammed.

Hopefully you have read thru all the material which was pretty exhaustive and might be in a position, confident enough to take a leap of faith or you waiting to die an old man filled with regret and froyo or even worse ecalir.. ugh!!
Right so off to it-

IF you reached this you must have messed up somewhere..No worries
Hopefully you heeded my warning for charging to 100%.If not pray your battery lasts the procedure( it should provided it had atleast 50-60% charge while starting your ordeal)
Now you might be wondering why I had asked you to install the RSDLite ?!
If you are getting Bootloops( though it should not happen)then do the following:
1- Remove and re-insert the battery
2- Hold down simultaneously both the Power and Volume UP for approx 5-10sec and release
3- The screen should display
"Bootloader
9.10
Ok To
Program
4-Open RSDlite on your PC >> Navigate to the froyo SBF file
5- Connect the phone and pc via USB cable
6- The rsd should display phone connected or connected
7- click on Start .. wait ... wait .. wait ..
8- it should say PASS >> only then do you remove the USB cable.
9- Repeat all the steps for installation of ICS all over again.. it should work though..
=============================================================================================
Note: Some users even after using the above mentioned method of reflashing to stock face Bootloops of the red Moto Logo.- Please check which version u have and only flash the sbf( red/green Lens)

Note:
Yet some others have found this a solution to the bootloops while trying to re flash Stock froyo

We are launching Stock Recovery and wiping cache and data.
Use below mentioned steps:
1. Remove battery from phone and then reinsert;
2. Press and hold Volume Down button along with Power button till you see Android icon with an exclamation mark (!);
3. Once you see android icon and exclamation mark release both buttons and now press volume up and volume down button together;
4. Above steps will launch Android System Recovery window (Stock Recovery);
5. Now “wipe data/factory reset” by pressing volume down key and to select press power key;
6. On the next screen it will prompt you to confirm this option by selecting “yes – delete all use data” select this option with power key again;
6. Also “wipe cache partition” from power key as mentioned above;
7. Now select “reboot system now”;
After above steps it will take around 3-5 minutes for first boot and your phone will now boot in normal state.
If the above steps does not resolves the issue then I would recommend you to use some other SBF depending on your region.
Hope this helps!

There are several threads with lots of info. The target audience is your nOOB who doesnt have to feel frustrated not knowing where to look.
If you feel the sole purpose of this is was fishing for thanks dont you think there would be a slight lack to commitment to the thread
But then again to each his own.
Please look elsewhere.
Thank you
As a noob to Defy flashing but not android flashing I found this very helpful.

noob asking for help installing cm9
Hey guys, well i'm a noob when it comes to this, i had a lot of trouble even rooting my defy+ cuz it was 2.3.5 and when i finally got to root it and installed the 2init, well i thought i was good enough to install a cm9, i found yours and ur guide so easy that i tried it.
It all was going so good to the point where i choose the .zip to install the cm9 nightly, and i got an error: it can't open the .zip file, says it's bad, tho i've downloaded some other zips it keeps saying the same.
I'd really appreciate any help on this cuz atm my damn phone is nothing more than a dead weight in my pocket.
Thanks.
UPDATE: used another nightly and it appears to be ok so far.
Can i suggest an aditional step - create a back up before you wipe everything in clockwork mod recovery, test that back up, by selecting back up/restore and restoring the back up youve just made, then continuing with the wipe/factory re-set, should be done between steps 7 and 8.
It will add some extra time to things, but should you encounter problems youi wil have a tested working back up to go back to should everything go wrong - these emergency back ups have got me out of difficulty several times..
Also when updating a rom/nightly make a back up and save it else where - you dont need loads of back ups delte the older custom rom ones every now and agian- just keep your old stock one as a just in case.
At the moment i am runnig CM9 20120708-NIGHTLY-jordan
and i have a back up of the CM72-20120601-NIGHTLY-Defy as well as the old motorola stock froyo ready to go should i need them again.

I just took the screenshot
Thanks mate for the how to!
What an amazing screen shot!
One more noob question talking about backups : I am currently on GGL ROM (Gingerbread for Green Lens Defy), can I do a full backup, install CM9 and then only restore data once on CM9?
Thanks for the help!

please don't do that if i may suggest.
i have tried it and left stuck at moto logo.
i was using GGL ROM, so i just install the CM9 from epsylon3 zip, and got stuck.
( i was assuming that the GGL ROM is still using froyo kernel, but maybe i was wrong)
the best way is to flash sbf back to stock froyo first.
Wow! Thanks, I was about to mess it up!
I think I didn't get well the working of GGL...
But coming from GGL, did you follow all the steps of the first post of this thread?
And what about restoring GGL data after FroYo sbf flash, root, 2ndinit and CM9 installation?

what kind of data are you talking about exactly?
in my case, all my contacts, appointment, calendar data are already synced with my google account. So all of them were automatically restored the minute i logged into my account during initialization process.
as for applications, all apps that i have downloaded previously are also recorded by my google play account.
so basically for apps, i just make backups for their settings and store in SD.
After CM9 installation, i just reinstall everything, and restore settings from their backups on SD.
the other option you may try is using titanium backup for applications.
When update to a new nightly, no need to "Wipe Dalvik Cache"? but in some guide, i see this step, can you clarify this? thanks

There really isnt a need to wipe dalvik while you are doing a nightly.. Only while installing new roms.. then again.. why not go ahead with it and see the differnece with/without the dalvik clear ..

Good day... I'm running the 120705 Eppy Defy build...
My question is, do i need to wipe the Dalvik cache when upgrading a nightly? Cuz some of the stuff the changelog says is fixed is still broken, can the dalvik cache make a difference to this regard? I have never wiped it since that first time I swopped over to CM9.
Also what data will be lost when it's wiped?
I have defy red lens upgraded to CM7.1 & now i wanna upgrade it to cm9...so i'm confused how to do it..bcoz everywhere its shown from froyo to Cm9.. but meh got cm7.1 so plz tell meh wot i need to do? any small written steps will be sufficient coz meh know how to go through boot menu and stuff..
