[Q] Please help a noob - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. I am in the process of trying to get root back on my evo and would like to ask for confirmation on what I am planning to do before I go down the wrong path.
History- My phone was rooted with Warm 2.2 on it and my speaker went bad. I needed to return it to Sprint for warranty, so needed to go back to stock. Because I wanted to make sure that I had everything backed up properly (especially contacts), I asked a guy to help me get back to stock, which he did. Speaker was replaced and now I am trying to get back to where I was before the speaker went out.
I currently have s-off, but not root. I tried to use UR3, and it wouldn't work because my radio version was not supported.
Firmware- 2.1-update1
h-boot 0.79.0000
radio- 1.39.00.05.31
I have done a ton of research, but with SO much info avail. on xda, I want to make sure I am about to take the right steps.
Here's what I think I need to do:
1- Place PC36IMG.zip of Anon Ra 2.3 recovery on root of SD and then boot into h-boot and let it update.
2- Run UR3 to get root back.
3- nandroid backup
4- place .zip of ROM on root of SD card
5- Boot into recovery and install ROM zip from SD
Does this sound correct? Am I doing any wrong or useless steps? Any additional steps I should be doing? Different order?
Similar but different topic- I love how clean/ stable and functional Warm 2.2 is. Any other similar ROM recommendations?
Thanks in advance for the help- sorry for the extreme noob-ism.

Check for software updates and get to 2.2. Then use Unr3voked to root.

Software updates will probably take hmi to 2.3, which is bad.
You need to run unrevoked, first.
If you don't have the drivers on your computer now, reinstall htc synch, then uninstall it.
THEN flash the Amon Ra PC36IMG.zip to get recovery on there.

I have the drivers. Unrevoked won't work because my radio version Isn't supported. I was thinking the pc36img.zip file would bring me to a version that would be supported by Unrevoked. Is there a better way?

It seems to me you would need to get to a place to update the radios. Which would either be NAND unlocked, or into a sense rom and update your firmware and profile?
Maybe this will work? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747319

Bought An Evo that was rooted already but don't know which one? Please help

I bought an Evo from Cragslist and Installed on it was the android-wifi-tether. I neaver asked the seller what root he had put on the Evo is there any way to check? I wanted to but the new update on Evo not really sure what to do I don't really use/abuse the teathering thing it is nice to know you can do it though.
Settings-About Phone-Software. It should be listed in the version number. If the bootup is the typical Spring 4G splash, then it's probably just stock with wifi tether.
If you ever want to keep root or unroot in the future, do not install the OTA update. You'll lose the ability to root.
You can install just about any ROM you want, read around the forums for information on each one and how to install them. You may also want to read the "how to root" threads to see how it was done, as it's very instructional.

Thanks for your help its sounds like I may want anthor rom idk the battery life and SD cards are major issues for me and i'm hoping that with a diffrent rom they would be able to fix them. I read that formating the SD card might fix the sd card bug but i'm afraid i'lll lose my root do you know if thats the case? Thanks
Formatting the SD card will not make you lose root. Although, it sounds like you may want to try flashing another Rom or even trying to redo toasts rooting guide

If all else fails just re-root. That way to can make sure of the root type
Simple Root
Thanks for your reply I'll try re-formatting the SD card tonight i'm kind of scared to put anther rom on the phone it seems so complicated....
But since I bought the phone used I really have no idea whats on this thing since I didn't ask the seller the right questions when i bought it
I have never used Craigslist before, but you can't email him just to ask? Worst case is he doesn't reply to your email.
good call I wrote the person I bought it from I didn't even think to search email and send him a message thanks for the advise!!
when i follow these steps i get the option to see versions of many diff things. android version, baseband version, kernel version, pri version, prl version... which one tells me the root? i also bought a rooted evo off someone and need to update gingerbread and beed this info i am told

If you're rooted and s-off, all you need to do is download the stock rooted rom (or if you'd like, a custom rom with updated software) and flash it through recovery. If you don't know how to flash roms, there are guides available here and on other sites.
You don't really need to know how it was rooted unless you are wanting to unroot. If you boot into hboot, then your hboot version will most likely tell how it was rooted. If it's 6.16, then it was rooted with revolutionary. If it's 2.10 or below, it was most likely rooted with unrevoked... but it could've been rooted with Toast's method or something else. If it's still on 2.2, then most likely unrevoked was used unless someone rooted with revolutionary and then flashed a 2.2 rom, but that's unlikely.
If you don't want it to be rooted, find out which root method was used and unroot with the proper method. You can RUU to the latest firmware during the unroot process.

All you need to do is research flashing roms. Once you understand that, go to the Evo 4G Development forum and find the stock rooted rom (grab the odexed version unless you plan to theme or modify it). Backup your apps and data with Titanium Backup and texts with SMS Backup & Restore if you'd like. Boot into recovery, nandroid backup, then wipe and flash as directed in one of the many guides.
If you have ClockworkMod recovery, I suggest switching to Amon Ra. Download the PC36IMG for AR and put it on the root of your SD card (not in any folders), then boot into hboot. The phone will scan for the file and ask you to update, hit volume up for yes.
You can get a properly named version of Amon Ra from here: http://db.tt/WP0beNa
But before doing anything, read as much as you can. Good luck!

[Q] Original stock rom update.zip file

Hey I need some help. I have been trying to reformat my phone with the original stock ROM but I cannot get the RUU to work. Every time that I try to use the RUU executable file to reinstall the original ROM it can't detect my phone. I really need help with this my phone is incapacitated right now. If someone could help me find a rom that I could use here that would be fantastic. Thanks
what happened that your phone is not working? are you rooted, s-off? what rom where u on b4?

It is S-Off and I am not sure if it is still rooted. I have been switching back and forth from the cyanogen mod and the stock rom, and I tried doing a system restore on the stock rom and it didn't really change anything but I don't think it can do root things anymore. It has been asking me to do a system update but every time I try to install it it fails.

Your failed update is probably due to your still having a modified recovery.
Something that could work for you:
>run the .exe for the RUU, then minimize it.
>start/run/type "%temp%" in the dialog box.
>search the output for rom.zip
>move the rom.zip to your sdcard and run it from hboot.
this should go through the rom installation and restore your rom. it's worked a couple times for me when I messed up recoveries.
Good luck!
BTW do you have HTC sync installed on your computer? not having that might be missing the driver for your phone.....just a thought
I tried extracting rom.zip out of the temp directory but the file was corrupted. Maybe the RUU doesn't work at all? I don't know. If you can get me a rom.zip that isn't corrupted that would be fantastic. Thanks!

Make sure SD card is formatted to fat32. Rename it so it is PB31IMG.zip(If on Windows and have fileextensions turned off rename it PB31IMG. The .zip will already be added.)
Put on root of SD card meaning not in any folders and boot into hboot. The phone will ask you to update, select yes and wait for it to ask you if you want to reboot.

To get s-on you need to have CW recovery. Wish you would have mentioned this before. You need to flash clockwork recovery again then apply the s-on. Then re run the previous PB31IMG.
Wow this is so freaking nuts. Ok so I tried running the S-ON .zip file that they provide using CW Recovery. Problem is now unrEVOked forever doesn't support my radio, radio-1.00.00.02.09. I will try to contact them unless you all have another idea. Thanks for your help so far!
If your still s-off you can flash a supported radio through Hboot much like the get back to stock PB31IMG you just ran. But if you ran the one I provided earlier you should be on a .92 hboot and a 2.15.00.07.28 radio, which is supported for s-on.
Here, download one of the ones that S-ON if compatible with and put it on the root of your sd card, and boot into hboot. Be sure its called PB31IMG.zip, or else it won't work.

Ok so I tried updating to a radio compatible with the unrEVOked S-ON update. When I try to run the file the recovery screen blacks out and then goes back to the main menu. It doesn't give me any output as to why that happened or if it even did anything.
You should flash RUUs from within HBOOT, not Recovery. An RUU includes everything from radio, to ROM, to recovery.
You can still do this with S-ON, since it is signed.
I'm not on the RUU I know how to install that. I need to use the S-ON .zip file that i got from unrevoked.com

You don't flash radios in recovery you flash radios in HBOOT. Make sure you rename the file to the proper filename then it should automatically detect it and install it.
Again like I said before, if you simply install the RUU from within HBOOT that would revert everything back to stock including the radio. Then you could run S-ON from within the stock recovery. But if you want to do it the other way so that you run the S-ON patch from within ClockWork that's fine too.
Haha well i have not explained things properly so let me explain where I am at right now very clearly.
Right now I have HBOOT updated using an RUU with a radio that unrEVOked forever works with. I have rooted and installed Clockwork Recovery. Now, I go to install the S-ON using Clockwork and then the screen blacks out and it returns to the Clockwork main menu without giving me any output.
Hopefully that clears things up
Ok sorry I thought you had trouble flashing the radio.
Yes I do believe the S-ON patch is installed within recovery, I just did it a few days ago and it worked fine. I was using the 7.28 radio. I believe I just did a normal .zip install in clockwork.
This sounds stupid, but make sure you're not pushing the power button. In ClockWork you have to push the optical pad to make selections, it's unlike HBOOT. I can't think of anything else.

How can I unroot with no computer and s-on

Recently I tried to unroot my EVO and now nothing is right with my phone anymore. I was running synergy rc1 when I tried to unroot. I searched how to unroot and came up with a file from a ruu which I renamed to pc36img and flashed in the bootloader. What that did was downgrade my baseband to 1.39.00.05.31 and turn s-on. However when my EVO turned on it was still PARTIALLY ROOTED. I can run apps that require root and I was still on Synergy but I have an old radio and s-on.
Now what I want to do is either turn s-off and keep root and my phone the way it is or unroot fully and put my phone to stock. What I've tried so far is flash the unrevoked forever and the latest radio updates, neither of which would flash because of E: errors. Unrevoked wouldn't work because of radio being outdated and radio updates require nand unlocked.
I really just want to unroot but I need help here because I cant get my usb port to work so I can't use the computer. Is there a file I can put on my sdcard to fully unroot, and does anyone have a file like this to provide me with? I don't care if its the latest OTA I just want to unroot. If anyone knows a fix to this it'd be great. Please don't say search or why can't you use the computer I just want people that can help me. Thanks
And if you want to know which pc36img I used its the one located in the thread titled "how can I unroot without computer" in the post where the user says I'll one up you just download this file and rename it to pc36img and flash

[Q] Evo, red triangle, s-on, won't unroot

Hi guys,
I hope I'm posting this in the right forum. So I am
familiar with rooting, and flashing etc etc but
this problem has me going nuts.
My Evo is rooted to metro, I need to flash back to
Sprint. I have done my best to follow the tuts on here.
This is what I have done so far- tried many RUU updates
and still have metro on the phone. I can't get into
recovery because I get the darn red triangle.
This is what I know about the phone-
I believe its an evo 2.3
Right now it says s-on
And the red triangle pops up when I try to go to recovery.
Here's what I don't know or have:
What the original RUU is- got this as a
Replacement from Sprint
Should I have s- off or s- on to unroot?
I also can't use the qpst cuz I can't figure out
What com my evo is on, it doesn't show up in my
devices.
Any help is gratefully appreciated,
You are already NAND Locked (S-ON) so the custom recovery may not be there or it may be of limited use. You should still be able to flash a stock unrooted RUU. I think what you need is here.
What hboot version do you have? You need to run an RUU with the same hboot version or higher.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
If you are s-on and not able to get to a recovery, you don't have root. Some how the root broke or something but still had Merto.
In order to flash anything you have to have a custom recovery and s-on, so you need to determine what root method you will need and run it to gain s-off.
What ROM and sense version are you on?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
It sounds like at this point ur set to flash a recovery, it i were u, I would do ra recovery flash, by putting pcimg36 on ur SD card, and install via boot loader, the flash a rooted Sprint OTA like 2.2, then flash s on, then download the official update from Sprint and apply it with ra recovery, that is the only way I found to flash a stock recovery, I am sure there are other ways
After flashing the latest update from Sprint u will be as stock as an off the shelf EVO, just make sure u get s on before flashing Sprint OTA.
This is a high level overview, i'll be happy to go into more detail of needed
Edit **red triangle is stock recovery**

You should be able to use Unrevoked:
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
make sure you have the droid incredible driver installed on your PC as well.

This process should root your phone, you'll then be able to flash other ROM's that may prove to be quicker, drain less battery, more stylish.

Not sure if unrevoked would work or not. But if your s-off you can just flash cwm or amon ra recovery thru hboot, and then flash the super user binary thru recovery. Bam your rooted.

See my post a couple up.
And for your info unrevoked gave the to new firmware error because you must be on the stock froyo radio for it to work, you are on the latest gingerbread radio. And there is also a newer version of gingerbread out, the official one 4.06.605.3 ruu you can get it in the dev section but if you do go from .2 to .3, do it before rooting as it will also un-root you.

I read your previous post and follow your instruction but with no luck. I tried several custom recovery and renamed it to PB31IMG.zip but always fail. Edit: Done! I get root again, thanks cmlusco. The problem is my SDCard which I used in Desire before. After reformatting the SDCard, everythings went well.

My gf finally wants me to root her Dinc and I noticed it's running 2.3.4 and dead stock. From reading here I guess it CANT be rooted now?

Not sure if unrevoked would work or not. But if your s-off you can just flash cwm or amon ra recovery thru hboot, and then flash the super user binary thru recovery. Bam your rooted.
Clockwork Recovery 5.0.2.0 --> Place on root of sd in no folders.
Super user binary -->
Place anywhere you like on your sd.

I have the exact same scenario but in the past I have never rooted a phone other than to get rid of software (that sprint forced on EVO) so I have never used recovery. I have been searching but maybe didn't go back far enough to be clear. Do I just copy the files as you stated and then select "recovery" while in the hboot screen???

Any further explanation would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

You take the PB31IMG.zip and the su.zip and place them on your sd card in no folders. Boot into hboot and wait a couple secs. It will find the PB31IMG.zip and prompt you to hit volume up to flash it. Once thats done then select recovery from hboot and select install zip from sd and select the su.zip. Answer yes when prompted to install. After it has finished reboot your phone and install thr superuser app from the market. Thats it then your fully rooted.
Thanks for your help again.
I hit volume up to flash and within about a second it shows update complete and asks to reboot device. I've tried both ways Yes and No, with No continuing on and doing the su.zip as instructed. It doesn't seem to do anything either way. How long should the PB31IMG take to flash?
