Will it waste my battery more if I have 3g and wifi on at the same time? Even though only wifi shows up.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Wifi and 3g are never on at the same time. When you turn wifi on, it automatically disables 3g.
Okay, but does that mean it is better for me to leave both on just in case I leave the house and forget to turn off wifi. Or does that drain more battery?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Depends on what your wifi sleep policy setting it set to. If its set to never, then your wifi would never turn off.
But generally, yes, it uses less battery on wifi than 3g, so use that whenever possible.
What I'm trying to say is: if I have both toggles on does it use more battery? Even though wifi overrides.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
If your WiFi is on but not connected to a network then yes it would drain more battery.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
That makes sense. But I meant the opposite lol. Like if I have wifi and 3g on. Is 3g draining any battery? And sorry I suck at explaining.

I am getting a new phone, and I want to get the Xperia Arc!
So what I want to know is, will I be able to experience it to it's fullest without a data plan? I do have wifi at my home so I can use all the data plan features there correct? And also, are there many apps available for this device?
Thanks!

Smartphones without data plan don't make sense imo.
You use them to be online everywhere.
But of course you can do that, but data isn't expensive these days.
Sent from my LT15i using XDA Premium App
It depends what you want to do with the phone, and how often you're likely to want to use it when you're out of wifi range!
And I don't know what's wrong with poker gypsy's phone but my battery life is great and I'm on the very latest firmware.. 4.0.A....
Sent from my LT15i using XDA Premium App
I've reflashed to 3.0.1 yesterday (Nordic Generic with Wotanserver) and then did the upgrade to 4.0 with SEUS and I must say the battery percentage indicator is more accurate (it doesn't stay at 100% for a few hours anymore) but the battery life is not that much worse actually. Maybe it'll result in one or two hours less per charge but it's still sufficient for me to get through the day without ever disabling data or WiFi, and I have full sync on for a lot of stuff.

I don't agree with that. You are saying that getting new car with out driver makes no sense?
You can use driver to drive you anywhere you want (and can drink when you have a driver )?
Lot's of countries have free wi-fi this day and age all over the place, so you can still benefit from having smart phone.
The only thing that you miss on is the advertisement in apps that are "free" IMO.
We also have a lot of free Wi-Fi hotspots here in Germany.
But they aren't that save and not everywhere like in school etc so I'm one of the guys who want mobile data.

Agree with that, also switched from iPhone and didn't look back.
Just get a Neo and invest the difference in a proper data plan. You'll be much better off than hopping from WiFi to WiFi with an Arc.
I'm going to get my daughter an android phone for her birthday, without a data plan (as it happens).. and the reason I'm doing that is because she asked for an iPod touch.. I figured she'd be better getting an android phone and having access to all the free apps that you can't get on itunes!.. She doesn't need a phone really.. she's only 9!
So basically an Andropod with phone capabilities.
use wifi for internet downloading and its fine without a data plan. I very rarely use mine, always have about 80% data allowance left.
Also, the battery issues i had were linked to running apps, once i rooted it and got rid of some of the preinstalled garbage, the battery life was good. Been running all day since 6am connected to hsdpa/edge and done a tiny bit of browsing, playing gangstar, listening to music for a little while (<30mins), its 7:30pm now and i have 58% left, so not so terrible

I have a Neo without data plan, at work I can't use my phone, so it doesn't matter, on my bike I just listen music on my phone, and you can cache maps i.e. with the Google maps app to use them outdoors.
Only con is you don't have the latest social media and news updates outdoors, but that's it. If you're not used to internet everywhere, you won't mind not having it I think.
It saves me €10 a month, I use prepaid, and I can have 200mb a month for €10 if I want, just for a single month (no contract). I have prepaid with Hi in The Netherlands(www.hi.nl).
I'd say:buy it simlock free, try it, you can always decide to take a data plan.

Yeah what above said. I get 2 bars avg in my house and get about 800kbps, 4 bars I get 1mbps, They may be working on the towers out there also
Any chance you might have given them reason to throttle you data connection down?
I also experience dramatic drops in data speeds at peak times and it is location specific where I live. At 2300 in my neighborhood I get great speeds, but at the same time at work (which is full of people still awake and likely using their network) I get really bogged down.
Either a possible factor?

I think the reason why people get horrible speeds at work is because there is probably too much electronic interference.
But then again, when someone says "work" I imagine someone sitting in a cubicle.

besides the "3G hack" is there anyway to prevent from being throttled on a non rooted 2.3.3 dinc2?
I was under the impression that even with the hack you can get throttled
But I also understand you need to be using GBs/month to make that happen. Most people would have a hard time getting there.
I stream Pandora ALL the time, and I usually get between 1 and 2 GBs of useage. I'm also using my phone for most of my internet browsing.

There's a lot of things that will influence your throughput. Signal strength is only one of a few. Signal quality and available bandwidth will also influence it. A strong signal with a bit of noise will cause problems.
Try *228 option 2, then reboot, and see if it helps.

Verizon is cracking the whip on "free" tethering. I read in an article that it can be tracked if your phone is on gingerbread. I'm not sure, maybe one of the devs could weigh in, but I read there was code written into GB to help them track it. If I can find the article, I'll link it.

While I do believe your seemingly knee-jerk complaint (that LTE chugs juice - which is well known), you really need to cycle the battery 2-3 times before complaining.
A fresh first ever charge on a brand new battery is never stellar.

At this stage LTE is something better left turned off unless you need it. Emails being pushed over LTE is a waste of battery. I find LTE to be too power inefficient at present so I don't even consider LTE phones, hence why I have the gsm version of the Nexus..and my battery life is just fine.

Yep. Unless LTE drastically reduces latency then it's like 99% useless to most of us.
If it operates on 700 MHz or some other low frequency like I think I've read then that would be a real saviour to the Verizon folks since the high frequency they operate their current 3G on has serious issues inside buildings.

I've always said this myself. Unless you pay for tethering and need to download .iso images at breakneck speed, LTE on a cellphone is kind of silly.
OMG 32mbps on my phonez!!
I just don't get how 32mbps can "better" stream what 5mbps can do just fine?
But Verizon fans always have their safe ground to say "well, at the end of the day Verizon has better coverage" which is true, but I can count the number of times on one hand ATT had spotty coverage for me in the past 6 years...

My wifi minutes are unlimited. The benefit is that my house gets like .5 bars and voice calls can't be answered made here. It's also good because wifi calling shuts off the cell antenna.

It depends on your calling plan. If you have at least a "value" plan, and I'm guessing a classic one as well, then minutes don't come out of your bucket. If you have an older grandfathered plan it comes out of your bucket.
The feature is free for any plan, even for prepaid ones.
