[SOLVED] [Q] Market download - insufficient space, no idea why - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have just installed CyanogenMod 7.0.3 onto my HTC Desire, and updated the market to the new/latest.
When trying to download apps through the market, I get the error message
Insufficient space on the device.
Under 'storage' settings, I have just under 7GB on SD card available and 127MB available on Internal storage.
Under Applications > Storage Use, it tells me also about 130MB free on Interal Storage (18MB used).
I have just used Rom Manager to Partition the SD card thinking that would help, but no difference.
I ultimately want to be able to use the SD for app installs, but at stuck at the first hurdle...
Was all working on when I was using Stock Sense Rom...!
Thanks!
PS I can install small applications, like 100K ish work fine...

fixed...
installed s2e, and ticked all the boxes of s2e and boom

I guess you run out of room even on /data since the /cache/download its binded to /data/local/download when /cache is under 20MB.

You and I should both be trying to help everyone we can - that's how a fantastic community such as XDA works, and why it works so well.
We can recommend, or even suggest, that rules be followed, but in the end, it is the responsibility of moderators to enforce the rule, not us members.
Josh.
OP, If you found a solution, I suggest changing the title of the thread so that it says "[SOLVED]". This way users having the same issue will see your solution.

No matter how hard I try, I don't see a point in your post.

I tried. I really did. But amount of spam in dev section is way beyond acceptable level. I was trying to help new users that created threads in wrong threads from time to time. But the moments it started to happening several times in a week, I resigned. My patience is not unlimited and it was depleted in less than month. If you still find strength to continue to "helping" stu..., er, I mean new users that obviously can't or won't (but most probably both) read, be my guest.
I WILL NOT!

Moderators? Here? Don't be ridiculous. If mods were doing their job, we wouldn't have to deal with kind of situations in the first place. The fact is they don't give a crap about it. They don't even allow you to report misplaced thread. So how can you expect from them to give even stupid warning?!

A simple "you put this in the wrong thread" would have sufficed, no?

You, just like many others before and after you, are proof that it stopped being enough long time ago.

First post here! Yipee! And a couple of questions on removal of a few apps.

I will start by sayign I checked over the first 5 pages of the forum and used the search feature on the site but could still not find the answer I was looking for.
2nd I have OCD And I really want to clear out as much of the preinstalled crap that came on the phone that I don't use. I have already gotten rid of about 10 items and the phone is still running fine but I am unsure of how to tackle the rest.
Can I...
1) Get rid of friendstream and still have facebook sync working after mainly for syncing my facebook phone contacs? (I would/could disable my facebook sync account before the uninstall and add it back after but will this work?)
2) If I remove footprints can I also remove the CAR PANEL app? I (probably like most here) only use maps but have not seen anyone mention the removal of car panel. Also what would the command line be? /system/bin/rm /system/app/CarPanel.apk ???
3) Final question if I remove the voice dialer would that have any impact on any other services?
Thanks in advance guys.

Well, I'll put you on the right path, but you'll have to find your own way. You need root to remove system apps, which are stored in /system/apps/ I believe. You will need to research where such apps are stored, and how to root your phone. I recommend looking at the subforum specific to your phone.
^^^ I have the Incredible phone and I am on the General Incredible forums. Also I am rooted otherwise how would I already removed a bunch of apps? (Which I stated in the original post)
I am just asking about these 3 apps in particular.
This is like the most unhelpful forum I have ever been to.

I don't think anyone really knows the answer to your three questions. Why don't you just make a nandroid backup then experiment? Post your results here when your done so others can learn from it.

Thanks for all the lulz, bro. Although I'll warn you that deleting Footprints can break Facebook syncing. I'm pretty sure there's a "list of apps that are safe to delete" thread in this good forum. Not to be "unhelpful" or anything, Mr. Entitlement.
Yea I tried to remove friendstream and the sync problems start up right after so I just did a Nandroid backup and all is well.
I also tried to remove the car panel app but it wasn't going through.
If anyone else is reading this can someone tell me what the command line might be for that? I was trying all different variations with a capital C & P and nothing was working.

If you do a simple google search, you'll find this forum HERE , and will see that you have to manually tell android to stop the sync for this app
I also found the answer to removing car panel HERE

Moving ANY app to SD on FroYo (or how to Enable all grayed out 'Move to SD' buttons)'

Well after reading the forums I found a lot op people complained about not beeing able to push an app to the SD card. And you don't have to root your phone for it. it will give you access to the 'Move to SD' button regardless if the programmer adapted his program for 2.2 yet.
With ADB you can do so very easy !, and there is no root required.
Perform the following steps :
1. Install HTC Sync (see : http://www.htc.com/ (select your device, download, and install ))
2. Install Android developers kit. (See http://htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-install-android-sdk-and-adb-drivers-for-htc-evo-4g/ for a detailed how to.)
Start ADB.
Use : adb shell pm setInstallLocation [option]
Where option is one of:
0 [auto] Let the system decide.
1 [internal only]
2 [external]
And you are ready to go.
Maybe you should have a read of the official documentation from google : http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/install-location.html
to understand what you are doing. And what you should not do (Like moving apps that run as a service to the SD card....)
I did this on my Phone and went to the settings and moved every app to SD. On this moment I have 70 MB free where previously i would have the ugly notification saying I needed to free up space. So this trick really seems to work.
Not everything is moved to the SD card, but about 50% to 70% of an app can be moved. The only app that left a substantial footprint on the device is Navigon. This one dropped from 20 MB to about 18 MB.
Everything is still functional and i have not noticed any negative effects so far.....
Reserved for future use
Just an FYI, but it does appear that there are still some apps that can't be moved to SD card using this method.
Skies of Glory is one that I've found that doesn't give you the option to install to sd, regardless of what you've set the install location to be.
Regards,
Dave
So can you confirm what option you chose? Did you choose option 2? If so, does this set the default, so any new app you install automatically goes to the SD card?

yes I put it to 2.
This will do two things....
1. This will give you the abillity to move ANY application to SD. Not completely, but for a big part. (some files remain in phone rom).
2. Any NEW app you install will automatically install on SD.
For sure there are exceptions, and for sure there will be apps that cannot be moved. But it freed up about 80 MB on my phone, so now i have room for more apps.
Fantastic! Exactly what I was looking for, thanks!
I'll try this with Google Earth tonight. Thank you.
I talked to HTC today about this and they said if I do that what u told here that the 2 year-guarantee will be screwed. So thx but no thx! They also said that in future, when other app-makers will make an new app, it will be the only way to make them via FroYo and then all new ones will be able to move to SD-card. So have patiance before U screw up the guarantee.
ill try it out tonite
hey is there any list of apps and games available online which would tell me the list of apps which support sd card save option.
i tried searching the market for "sd" "froyo" yet i dont think this shows the complete list

If you mean google maps, sorry cannot be done, this is part of OS and cannot be moved.
however :
Google sky map drops from 1.78 MB to 320 KB
Layar drops from 2.76 to 1.06
Systempanel drops from 1.07 MB to 556 KB
etc

Well i don't know who you talked to at HTC, but there is nothig illegal and it is IMPOSSIBLE to break your phone with this.
It could only void warranty if HTC could prove it was not their fault.
Since this is just a system setting invented by google and exposed by google, and documented by google, made possible thanks to HTC's own sync program, it seems very unlikely that HTC can revoke their warranty.
Before they can do such a thing they have to prove that what you did broke the phone. I doubt that they can EVER make it stick.
They also said that rooting would void warranty. But that's no longer the case either !. rooting is legal !.

Well I have heard the other side of the coin as well. Even if I gave u a name of the person I spoked with (it was swedish support) it wouldn't give u any kind of clue at all. But he has spoken with HTC-technicians and they all said that if u root it or as much as change something in the cmd-prompt, it will be f-cked up and 2 year-warranty will be screwed. I talked with him today, maybe an hour ago and I doubt that he talked bs.
So if the day comes and u have to send ure phone for repair, I think they can see what u have done with ure phone. I'm just saying that this thing that u wrote and tell everyone, maybe u shall speak with HTC first and get their approval BEFORE u tell everyone here what to do? It's kind of risky u know.. I have paid 470 EUR for the phone in april, so what makes u think that I will root it or change something in cmd-prompt?
And btw, HTC did also told me that in the future all app-makers will make their apps for FroYo, wich means that in the upcomming future every app will be removable to the SD-card. Kind of stupid to rush things up, don't u think? But okay, it's ure phone do whatever u want...

Sorry but this is utter hogwash! As long as you haven't changed your HBOOT from what it was at the time you got your phone, and can find the ROM which takes your phone back to what it was, there is NO WAY HTC can tell you've done anything whatsoever. Apart from maybe use a SIM Unlock code (which I bought).

Don't know what country you are from. But I know here in holland we consumers do have rights. And I will always win if we went to court !
Furthermore i think the person you spoke with really doesn't know what he is talking about. This is not only a HTC issue but will work on any Froyo phone.... It's just part of the android OS.
If they would not allow it they could have taken it out. HTC froyo is not stock froyo. Some things are modified in the OS to make Sense behave like it does. They could have taken this out but they didn't.
Would be like toyota saying their warranty is lost if you drive with the boot open. Your statement and claims are utter NONSE.
That the person you spoke with doesn't like this setting is totally clear to me. Cause now they cannot sell that 'new phone exactly like the desire but this time with 8 GB internal memory allowing for enough apps to be installed' they were thinking of.

Could anyone point me to the correct tutorial to root your HTC Touch Pro 2 ?
I'v been reading up on the android builds past few days. I'm totally new to this.
I got android to work with the project android build. And i want to use Whatsapp.
But it won't let me open Whatsapp. 3rd party task manager is killing it. So i guess its ATK ? But i can't just uninstall it trough settings>applications etc. Same trough android market. I read somewhere you'd have to root it then. But i don't know how. Any help would be appreciated alot !!!.
If i'm not suppose to post this, because i haven't looked or w/e, fine delete this. But i did look. And if been reading alot of topics and iv seen alot of flaming just because of asking a question. might have been a stupid one, but still, people just want some help. Why not help out ? We all start somewhere. And im starting right here. haha.
Oh and if im totally off map by saying rooting, let me know how i can get whatsapp to work. Iv seen it works for others so im just waiting to fix mine. haha.
Anyway, great job on the forum and great builds for TP2.

Hey,
first of all welcome to the xda-developers forum...
like u and i guess everyone i hate answers like some of the ones you got..
i think a froum is made to ask questiuons however that might be about...
and it took me month back in my old htc kaiser days to get the whole android thing.
so when you want to install apps that are not from the store then u have to check one checkbox first.
ull find it under settings->applications-> and there should be a checkbox that says unsigned apps or untrusted apps...something like that.
normally this page should pop up if u click on a app that u have on the sd card...
i hope that is what u asked for...
and the phone is already rooted whatever build u are using
and if u have any questions but dont want to ask them in the forum cuz u might think that u get answers that dont suit ure question just pm me

Your right, i don't know, that's why im asking... smh at the ignorance at this forum.
hey,
ok now i got what ure asking...
so then it is important what method u are using? do you have a system.ext2 file that you load with haret?
or do you have a partioned sd card with the android system on a ext2 partition.
when you have the whole system in a system.ext2 file you would need to unpack it, delete the .apk of the app, and then pack it into a .ext2 file again...
when you have the second method that just browse into the folder system/apps/ and delete the file...
that should work for every normal app but it is not easy to do it...

Well you certainly answered my questions with a confidence only stupidity can be responsible for.
FYI, there's a difference between ignorance & stupidity. Ignorant people just don't know. Stupid people know, but are willingly ignorant. You have all the information available to, yet you insist on being ignorant.
It's OK to ask questions - but if it has been answered before, answering the same questions over and over again gets old. So some of us will respond a little less amicably than others - 9 times out of 10, this was because the OP didn't do their due diligence.

when you have the second method that just browse into the folder system/apps/ and delete the file...
that should work for every normal app but it is not easy to do it...

I just sent you a pm. i don't load anything, i start winmo, open up, project android, hit boot, android starts... that's all i do. i don't have a system.ext2 file on my sd. if this method is "wrong" or dated, let me know where to get the newest build. seems like that is the problem ?
hm...so you have to have some files that are behind that...
and i would think that you have a system.ext2 file somewhere...
should be in the andboot folder on your sd card.
but in builds that are used now here that task manager you want to get rid of isnt used anymore...so i would suggest just try the xdandroid build and kernels or the neopeek version which is very fast and you have all files on a spare partition on your sd card.
if you want to get started with the neopeek build just check neopeek.com and then the forum. there are all the build he has developed and instructions how to install. if u have any questions about that just let me know...
i guess art your point it would be the easiest to switch to another build

Well you certainly answered my questions with a confidence only stupidity can be responsible for.
FYI, there's a difference between ignorance & stupidity. Ignorant people just don't know. Stupid people know, but are willingly ignorant. You have all the information available to, yet you insist on being ignorant.
It's OK to ask questions - but if it has been answered before, answering the same questions over and over again gets old. So some of us will respond a little less amicably than others - 9 times out of 10, this was because the OP didn't do their due diligence.

Listen, i understand your point of view. Iv been reading up on alot of threads in the Touch Pro 2 section. And i saw alot of normal questions being asked. And there was alot of flaming just because of those questions. That's disrespect in my opinion. Because you guys now, just point a newb to the right place. I mean it's not that hard... or is it ? Believe i do understand it though. But it doesnt hurt to be a bit more helpfull. Im willing to learn. I signed up because i wanted to participate and learn. That might not have been in my OP but im sure you understand by now, i do want to learn. And to be honest, alot of those frequently asked questions aren't in the provided tutorials or aren't easy findable. Wich makes it totally legit to ask a question. Forgive me for not reading 1000 pages of a thread. I only wanted a quick response to my question. A url to the right place to continue to search for a fix. and to learn. not to piss you guys off. Because it's allready been done about a million times. Again, i do understand your attitude, but give a new guy a chance to learn.

Thanks nick, you the man
I guess if your whole issue is ATK, then just use a newer build. I don't think ATK has been included in any of the 2.2 builds, but it hasn't been in a build for a while. So I'm guessing your build is old if you still have ATK on there.

its a double-edged sword this kinda thing, because its easy for both sides it is just tedious and requires an abnormal amount of patience which some of us (like myself) have little of to begin with
also there are times, like this, that a noob cant simply be pointed in the right direction
all that said i agree with nick, just use xdandroid for tp2 especially since that is what the people around here are most accustomed to
So I am new with the Android world.
I got Blazn up and running, but that's all where I am at lol.
So i see all those extra information that I am not knowledgeable about (not ignorant so people don't start flaming) , so I am going to call myself a NOOB when it comes to Android and learning bit by bit everyday.
So long story short, You guys got WhatsApp up and running properly?
Because I heard back in the 2.1 eclair , WhatsApp was not working correctly.
If working, what alterations have you guys done to make it run (if any needed).

Ok, after a quick google search I see what it is... why not just use Google Voice? Seems like a much better alternative IMHO.

[FIX] ICS Media Server Battery Issue

Since the release of ICS on our phone I'd been having the issue of Media Server eating up 50-60% of my battery at all times and none of my pictures, ringtones or music showing up in any of the stock google apps. I know a number of people were having the same problem. I assumed it was kernel issue (it still might be) but i wanted to figure out if it's user fixable. To figure out what the problem was I pulled every last audio file off my SD cards and re-added them one at a time.
The problem seems to be with the m4a scanner/decoder in the media server. m4as use a different algorithm than mp3s so the 2 file types are scanned/decoded separately. The problem seems to be in my case that the ringtone for the facebook app pop which resided on my internal SD was hanging the scanner and blocking all the other media files on both SDs. Other m4as were causing problems too, none of which seem to be corrupt or dysfunctional. It seems that m4as scan before mp3s and m4as are more prone to catastrophic failure so they are the biggest offender.
tl;dr
The fix:
Step 1: Remove all m4as from your sd cards to a folder on your desktop via usb storage; ringtones and all. I dont have any AAC files (itunes format) but they are m4as as well so I recommend removing them as well.
Step 2: Add them back one at a time, each time disconnecting from your computer and checking battery stats. If the file is ok you will see media server fall off the list within a minute. If media server hangs at 50% then that audio file is your culprit.
Step 3: If the offending file doesn't show itself, remove all audio files from your sd; mp3, wav, aiff, whatever. Use a mp3 repair app (I use http://www.triq.net/articles/mp3-validator-mac-os-x for mac, theres eleventy-seven of them for pc. I dont claim to know which is best) to check and repair them and re-add them one at a time in the same procedure as step 2. Hopefully it wont come to this.
If none of these steps work start checking other media files. Corrupt video or image files might cause the same problem as they are all scanned by the media server.
Hope this helps
Not pulling 1.8k songs from my phone lol

No one told you that you have to.
That is definitely a WORKaround....LOL!!!
Think i will just stick to the GB ROM's for now. I have 26gb of AAC (m4a) music on my phone right now. I do appreciate you taking the time to figure this out!!!!
It took me about 3 hrs to get it working properly and most of that time was spent getting all the 20GB of music off my phone onto my computer. The troubleshooting aspect went pretty quick.
I have no empirical proof that the issue is caused only by m4as but i have an inkling that it is, just based on what i went through during the fix. So unless you only use m4a and aac audio files it actually is pretty easy. You can actually use the mp3 repair programs while the files are still on your phone to cut out a large portion of the initial time consuming dump.
Thanks for the tip, but this definitely isnt a fix btw for the record. And here is my little rant. Not towards anybody though. Just to google actually since there is no answer from them whatsoever regarding this issue.
Whatever media files you might have "mediaserver" thing shouldn't happen. We could be downloading some new ringtones and wallpapers that are "corrupted"...(how the hell are we supposed to know if the files aren't corrupted. And what the hell does it mean by corrupted? Was something supposed to really even care that files are so called corrupted? )
Does your 3 year old mp3 player drain battery by just having a corrupted music file?
Google should step into this and fix it....
I had the same issue, in fact I posted about it 2 days ago in the Q&A section trying to find a solution. In searching, and I did a lot of it, I'm sure I ran across your thread in a Google search and started doing what you suggested.
In doing that, and then checking to see if it would still run after reboot, even after having very little media left on my cards, that stupid media server would not stop running. So it got old pulling of little by little so I finally just took everything off and reformatted both my internal and external SD cards. Now I never see the Media Server running in the battery stats.
I've been slowly adding stuff back in, paying attention to the server and it doesn't show it running constantly anymore.
I know it was a corrupt file that ICS didn't like somewhere, a MP3 or ringtone...something it was scanning and getting stuck on.
It's nice having a clean SD card again. After many flashes and different ROM's, I had so much crap on there, who knows what it could of been. But it solved my problem; and thanks for the heads-up because I was at a loss as to why I was having this issue and others not! Very happy now
Did help on my phone.
Thanks alot!
Is there any way to get Media Server to ignore directories? I think I am having issues with it hitting a WebM file.
TBH, I don't know why I want it to scan my files. I keep them in a fairly organised way and would probably be fine if it never bothered to scan for them.
add a blank file named ".nomedia" in whatever directory you wish it to ignore. all subdirectories will be excluded as well.

What exactly does media server do, is it necessary to certain functions of ics, and could we just block it or remove it?

U resurrected an old thread why?..
MediaServer is the media scanner, you can remove, but your libraries wont be refreshed, there ARE apps online that can be used to replace, and offer 1-click scan, & scheduled scan. But as of official release, (for me anyways) this is a non-issue.
Plz don't resurrect old threads.. thx
If he had a question about the thread then there's no reason why he shouldn't all the question in it. What do you want him to do, start a new one?
Thanks for the media tip. I didn't even know this could be a problem. But know I know how to trouble shoot it if it occurs.

Yes actually, he could have simply made a response in Q&A section, considering this is a very old post for a very old bug that has been long since fixed
And considering all his questions, although are pertaining to posts topic, could have been answered with a google search, or even the lazy way (Q&A) would probably yeild results quicker, expecially since the topic doesn't actually suggest the presence of his question?,

because i followed a link from a different forum, i have previously googled this issue, a few months back, and asked in my devices forum and no one answered. There is no official ics for my device and it is still an issue for me. I found this link and asked a question. Isnt the point of forums to help others, also this thread isn't THAT old, and really, wouldn't you rather ppl post in an already existing thread rather than spamming the forum with multiple threads on the same topic, like they do in the GT2 forum, which is as annoying as ****.

Hi, I've been trying to find a fix for this issue and after reading all posts and doing several Google searches, I still have not found a satisfactory fix. Removing everything and putting it back one by one is a VERY time consuming work around, but no fix. Stopping the service and replacing it with 1-click or scheduled sync is also not a fix. I am using the latest 1.6 Paranoid Android ROM and this issue started all on its own without me doing any updates to the music or videos. Only changes are new photos and new or updated apps. I hope a proper fix is found sooner rather than later.

It really is the only fix, and it works. I too started removing things one by one until I got fed up and completely reformatted both internal & external sd cards a few months back, and the issue never returned.
I had one of the Devs tell me it's always good practice when making a OS change, like GB to ICS to start with fresh reformatted cards; because you don't know what junk is left behind on the cards, that the new OS is not going to like. It works, you don't need to stop any services, and its worth the time.

SMS fishing using some ROM's

Hi guy's,
there are some rom's floating around that are responsible for sms fishing.
Meaning in some cases an sms is send to top up some mobile number.
This also means there are some security issues going on and that information
is send to devious party's.
If you have experienced something like this, then please let us know when, how
and what rom are where running. Other information is also appreciated.
Maybe it's time to setup some kind of security check system here on the board.
Thank you.

These words sound like a stone, have you got any list of these "trojan" roms???
Where did you heard about it?
Maybe we can do a list...
Yes, I do understand your feeling.
But let's see what other comments come up before we start fingering the culprit.
Such a useless thread.
You just say somewhere are roms which are fishing SMS.
You don't give any examples, you don't even say how anybody can notice it if SMS are being phished.
Additionaly this is the wrong section, it would be more like general information, and not Desire General, instead Android General.
Edit:
Ever since I tested this rom I keep getting fishing SMS.
Asking to top up some mobile number. In this case number 0494296797.
Obviousquestion: why is my mobile phone being attacked?

This concerns [★★ SMS ★★ ]★ RSK TEAM ★ ORIOLA Xperia Z★
I think you should prove first that you don't lie and this is a discussion for this single rom.
You're saying that some roms are phishing SMS, you have to prove this
Look sunnyboy, don't call me a lier.
I tested it with three sim cards and now all of them get the same kind of sms messages.
Also use the same configuration with all the roms I test, same apps same conditions.
And to be fair, I did not name any specific rom, yet.
You have to admit this sounds very suspicious.
Perhaps it would be wise to put a screenshot of the SMS or at least the text of the message here so people can see it and maybe help.
This was the last one which arrived on an other test sim.

I was just thinking maybe there's some rouge app that's causing it as you said you're getting the same even on other sim cards. But also maybe you're very unlucky yo be constant victim of these attacks. Or who knows maybe you got some sort of virus that's causing it. Not sure if the ROM would be the cause as there would be loads of information on this issue.

Sorry, didn't say anything about being an victim. And so fare only one sms has been send
to each sim. But it is obvious that the sim card numbers have been send out using the last rom.
And to be clear, I use the same setup on any of the rom's I test. If it is an rogue app, then it is
one in the rom.
Let's wait an see if anyone else is experiencing this.

I have used most ROM's available on XDA (if not all), never had such issue ever.
Also AFAIK, the sms you posted is not any kind of phishing it's a SMS from your GSM operator.
