Hi!
I am searching for an app which automatic enables the mobile data connection if I eg. open internet, looking for emails... The APP data on demand does not really work.
Any sugestions?

Thanks, but I already use the htc widget to turn mobile data on/off, but I want it automaticly, jusr like in windows mobile 6.x...
Check Juice Defender app.
It lists the following as it's features.
- Mobile Data toggle automation
- 2G/3G toggle automation**
- WiFi toggle automation + Auto-Disabling option

Hi,
Coming from an HTC HD1 and HD2, I've just bought my HTC Desire yesterday. And wooow, it's amazing ! Really faster than the HD2 !
It seems that my Desire is always connected to the 3G/EDGE network. How can I see if I'm connected or not ? I've set "enable always on mobile" to OFF, and "Auto Sync" to OFF. But I still see the E icon with grey up and down arrows.
Is there an app to disconnect data after x minutes, if the device is not used ? On windows mobile, I was using WM Long Life to do that trick. I don't know if there is something similar, because I'm very new to Android.
Thanks
Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks toggle to turn it off. Alternatively, you can use the mobile network toggle widget, from HTC, on one of your homescreens.
About turning off the data after x amount of MB - I use 3G Watchdog. Search for it in the market, it's really good, plus comes with a useful homescreen widget etc etc. lol
Hope that helps.

Grey means they're not doing anything. They turn white when transmitting/receiving.

Thx for the answer. I went through Settings -> Wireless & Networks and turned off the connection. But this option totally prevents the phone from being connected to the 3G network. When I turn it back ON, then the phone automatically connects to the network.
What I want is the phone being able to connect but not permanently.
For example, I check my mails, the phone connects, retrieves the emails, and when no more data is being downloaded, disconnects after xx seconds.
It would drain less battery than being always connected.
I've searched for watchdog, but it isn't what I'm looking for.

If its not transmitting data, it does not use any more power then if disconnected. Don't worry about it.

would highly recommend juice defender. managers disconnection of data at set times to conserve battery.
I have found APNDroid widget to work quite nice. Click to network on, check mail, update everything, then click off. Still not quite what you are looking for, but perhaps a solution. I am currently on 6 month contract in India & the mobile data rates here is ridiculously expensive. 1mb = 40min phone call in price. So it works quite well for the battery drain & cost saving here.
Why use APNdroid when there is a native widget, which does the exact same thing? (add widget, settings, mobile network)

thanks. Didn't see that far.

thanks, didn't know that
anyway I use apndroid also, because when I click the Htc gadged, the apn connection is estabilished.
Apndroid adds a suffix to the apn name, thus it's impossible to connect (and pay fees ) if I don't want to
Hi,
been wondering about this: how does switchpro widget disable data connections?
It seems to work fine on my desire but when I go to settings I see data connection is still enabled and apn's haven't been renamed
Does it do anything in the background or am I missing a parameter?
Cheers
B
I have been trying to work out exactly what it does as well.
It certainly is not an APN re-namer like most, as this is something you can enable in switch pro's settings if you need too.
However like you said it also does not tap into the official HTC version like the sense widget, or CM6's modified power control widget.
Anybody ? I switch data connections off when I go to bed but when I unlock my phone in the morning I notice a 3g icon active (though it disables immediatly after)

i cant even enable data connection using switchpro widget - the icon lights up but nothing happens
i have to manually turn on the connection in settings
i am only able to deactivate data connection using this widget

long press screen > widget > settings > mobile network
Then it put a widget on my screen to turn it on or off
Also there is a widget 3G hotspot, airplane mode, bluetooth, GPS, sound profile, rintone, and wifi.

I just bought the Defy for my younger sister and was just wondering if there is a way to turn off the data since I only want her on wi-fi. I know there's apps out there like extended control but is there anything I can change in the settings? I did some searching but found nothing on the forum if I missed it can you guys point me the right direction? Thanks a bunch!
When in Europe I use an app called APNdroid from the market. It kills edge & 3G but leaves wifi and voice/text running. If you want to kill EVERYTHING but wifi, hit airplane mode then wifi.
I suppose it depends on your service provider, but if you set up nonsense information in your APN (i.e. it can't find a server) then it won't be able to access 3G data. I've set up 2 APNs on my phone, one to allow and one to turn it 'off'. Works like a charm.
Well, for me, anyhow.
+1 for APN renaming.

Go to market, find this--> APNdroid
Install it & put on desktop.
This will help stop the Defy from using GPRS.
Edmond.
there are dialog in settings that allow to disable all mobile data transfers over gsm/umts networks

Yeah I looked for that too but didn't find it so I'm just using the app. Thanks for all the help!
You can use the app"Droidwall",you can disable 2G,3G, and use only WIFI
You can try a battery saving app called "juicedefender".
The original function of it is turning off data when the screen is off, but you can use its widget to turn off data completely.
hi is there an app that can do the following
turn wifi on when at home, off when not
turn sync off when at home, on when not

An alternative would be Llama... It's free and relies on cell towers instead of location data.

Can't you just do all that if you put the setting widgets on a screen?? that's how I turn mine off and on? or have I missed the point?
