My wife dropped her EVO and shattered the glass. Has anyone had any experience replacing the screen/digitizer? I found a tear down thread on ifixit now I'm wondering about "OEM" screens/digitizers and tools on ebay or elsewhere. Seems to be a lot. Are they junk or really OEM? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Same question here. Are those ebay screens any good or are they cheap junk? I'd rather tear it down my self and replace the glass for $60.
A friend of mine dropped her Defy on to a stone floor from a few feet.
The screen broke with several cracks from the impact point. Strangely, the phone still works fine although it's a little uncomfortable swiping across the cracks!
I thought these phones used gorilla glass? Is that not the case?
Wasn't there a vid of a Defy being run over on Youtube?
Very disappointing and worrying seeing as I got my GF one for Christmas based on its ruggedness.
Regards,
Richard
PS It was a T-Mob UK version that broke if that makes any difference.
I've seen such a video which featured the Defy being run over and still working, although the screen was pretty smashed...
I've read a few reports elsewhere of screens breaking from relatively small drops. I guess they are ruggeder than most, but not all that...
Gorilla Glass isn't indestructible, just more resistant to it than regular glass. Even in this marketing video the screen was cracked (although still intact enough to resist the water attack afterwards)
You can probably get a replacement glass facing from Motorola. Well they must have quite a few spares around given the hubbub with the failed earpieces (that needs a full glass replacement)
So... any one got an idea as to how difficult it is to swap the glass?

Personally I wouldn't try to change the glass myself due to the water tight seal.
Take it to your dealer and let them deal with it. Even if they charge you for the work it might be worth it not voiding the warranty.

Good point!
Hope my friend has got some good phone insurance!
Replace broken glass
Here is a video clip of me trying to replace a broken glass. The first part is only the disassemble. Check youtube for more.
Good effort!
It looks like getting the glass out of the front cover is quite hard. I was sure you were going to cut yourself...
Where did you source the replacement glass from? Did it come in a kit with the glue etc.?
R.
Gorilla glass is scratch resistant not shatter proof, there is a massive difference.
Well it wasn't that hard. I found the replacement glass on ebay, search for defy digitizer. Unfortunately there was no adhesive included so the final result was not so very nice. The new glass got a bit dirty from the adhesive I used. Here you can se the final result and the assemble:
The OEM adhesive is available from globaldirectparts, however you have to buy 5pcs minimum. At $5, it's affordable, but not cheap considering it's only a really thin piece of sticky foam. On other forums, people have used silicone-based glue, still maintaining waterproofness.
Many Broken screens
I've broken my motorola defy screen a few times, and collected experiences on www.motoroladefy.eu
vids for how to fix and links to the parts I ordered that worked.
If you go for display with front cover, don't forget to move the earpiece!
Is there some place I can buy a near OEM replacement glass screen?
I ran into a table with my phone in my pocket and the glass is destroyed, the Digitizer and LCD still work at all locations though so I guess that's good. I have since gotten the S4 (Free thanks to Best Buy on black Friday) but I would still like to fix the S3 in case my mom/sister ever want it.
I have found parts on ebay/Amazon but I don't think they are authentic enough, and I'm a stickler for having it as close to original as possible.
I wouldn't be opposed to paying more for something better quality. $10 - $40
I think you should buy the ebay one's, you wont find a glass only oem replacement because samsung only repairs the whole screen(digitizer, amoled, touch) not only the glass. I've repaired mine with a glass bought on ebay and it's been good for 8 months or more now.
Hi guys my brother just recently bought a Zenfone 2 ... it's just 2 weeks old and he dropped it on asphalt from about 1m.... well even if it's gorilla glass 3 it shattered really badly. He's quite busy and asked me to find him a replacement glass but i have failed to do so, here is where you guys come in - does anybody have any exp with glass replacement? I mean where to buy it from. I found a really clear guide and video how to do it - now i just need to find a place to buy the replacement. It's only the top screen - touch works just fine - no problems wish the image either. So there you have it, we're in the UK by the way if that matters (so i guess no US shops...)
Thanks guys!

I purchased an actual Asus replacement on ebay for $25 shipped, took my about 45 minutes to replace it. You will have to purchase the double sided tape to stick it back in.
A $2 tempered glass screen protector from eBay or Aliexpress is also a worthy investment if your brother does not mind a submillimeter extra layer on the display.
Dear XDA users!
I have bought this phone 2 weeks ago, with the Huawei hard case. I was using my phone with the case installed, with the pre-installed screen protector, as my hardened glass did not arrive yet.
Today I dropped my phone for the first time and the screen got cracked on the top right corner. I guess, no warranty for this, I have to replace the screen by myself. I found several replacement on aliexpress around 80 euros, but I am a bit sceptic on the quality..
Any recommendations, experiences?
Thank you!
