[Q] Whats happening? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I used to be able to leave my phone on standby overnight with 30% of battery with wifi on but whenever I do now it kills the battery and I mean kills it. Its dead to the point of me not being able to boot the phone on and have it shut down on me. I put my charger in and the LED flashes for a while and its only when it stays solid that the phone has enough charge for me to turn it on.
Is this a problem with the ROM or the firmware build its based on or am I missing a setting? WiFi is not on best performance mode and I have selected to turn off after 15mins inactivity?

It's likely to be due to the rom you are using. What rom is it?
It's not necessarily the wifi draining the battery.
The latest MIUI roms are terrible for battery drain relating to the mic not switching off. Post back and I will try and help.

Make sure you check under SETTINGS>>WIRELESS & NETWORKS>>WIRELES SETTINGS then press menu and then Advanced. Make sure the "Best Wifi Performance is unticked, and whilst your here may as well check the sleep timers.
If this doesn't work, then you may want to hunt down the app "Battery Historym for GB" which will allow you to see the battery history in GingerBread Sense based ROMS. this will allow you to look at what has been using the battery. What you are most interested here is the partial wake usage, or what has been stopping the phone from deep sleeping.
It might be the wifi or it might be an app you installed recently.
Make sure you do the usual, Check HTC Sync is not on, and other accounts which can get jammed in the sync process. I find google calendar can do that for me.
Also rememebr to check your radio is matched to your ROM and maybe get SetCPU (Search for it on here for the free for XDA subscribers version) and check your speed settings and governator. Im using Smoothass atm and it runs awesome for me.

Yeah I don't have anything but my Facebook/Twitter and Google accts setup to sync and thats even set to manual so as to avoid constant data drain. I know the HTC Sync and HTC Sense accounts draining battery and the fact that both Facebook and Twitter for HTC Sense along with Flickr cause the Calendar process to keep the phone awake.

Will have to double check on Lees thread but was under the impression the governor you mentioned runs on boot on Leedroid, I have setcpu installed but haven't given it root as I heard of setCPU causing issues with some Sense GB ROMS. I'll try everything else and look at that as a last resort.

Looked at using Spare Parts and the *#*#INFO#*#* but since GB it won't allow you to check the apps usage so gonna have to download that other app you suggested.

Battery life just terrible, need since help plz!!

As title says guys, I don't no why but my battery life is just really bad since I moved from stock 2.1 Rom to custom ROMs :-(
Is it my phone? I can't work pig wot it is. I checked the battery usage #*#*4636*#*#) and it seems the Android system is using A LOT of it. I tried charging with phone off, clearing battery stats, not overcharging, but just can't resolve this issue.
Also, I have sync set to update manually and have mobile internet off always, only on wen needed. Same with WiFi. Screen is on auto and time off screen lock set to 30 seconds
I am using OpenDesire sense Rom
Any help will be really appreciated.
Thanks

I could feel WiFi siginal of 2.2 is much better that stock 2.1,
I suppose that the better performance will bring the fast battery drain,
if your custom ROM support WiFi N mode,
that really makes your battery life short that before.
I have the same problem and same settings as you. I read on other forum that people who updated to official 2.2 have even better battery life.
I cant even squeze 20 hours out of my battery :/
You guys should always post what ROMs you are using...
Opendesire 3.3, its the same with defrost.
i also had really bad battery life on those 2 roms
even doing nothing the phone would just keep dropping
go to official froyo 2.2
neophye roms for me have amazing battery life = 48 hrs..

Check if the phone goes to sleep correctly. Spareparts > battery usage: other usage, since last unplugged.
I had the same problem, until I found out that the phone was not going to sleep. (running and screen on percentages were way off. Almost 100% running and a lot less for screen on.
update to the last radio
I found that after forcing everything to install to SD card my battery life plummeted. There were apps/widgets that should have stayed on the phone. Once I moved these back, battery life was back to normal.
I use Systempanel to see the battery drain graph and could see a pattern to it.
Same issue here, Will try Neophyte tonight
Using this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741663, and it's fantastic! However batt life on .08 and .20 radio is a shocker. I watched a 1 min trailer on youtube, in and out and I lost 4% battery. Before with OpenDesire I'd be shocked if the battery percentage even twitched slightly.

I use Defrost 1.5a and I just use about 2% every hour when the phone is sleeping, and that's with auto sync and mobile data enabled. (disabled it's 1%/hour)
Always underclock to the lowest mhz when the screen is off using SetCPU and when you do use your phone make sure the brightness isn't too high.
I could make a whole list of tips, but I'm sure you'll find more than enough of those on the net.

(using Cyanogenmod 6)
When your screen is off, your phone should automatically go to sleep. Sometimes widgets or apps keep this from happening (like the music player), making it use battery as if you are constantly working on it.
How I resolved this issue was to find out what app or widget caused this. I ended up starting from a fresh reset, installing first all apps I really use (calendar/message widgets, powerstrip etc.)
I tested by installing an app, rebooting (or sometimes not), check the running time of the phone, turning screen off, and check again in 5 minutes. The phone should go to sleep in about 30 - 40 seconds. I am telling you this, because most apps causing this are widgets/apps running constantly.
However, I found in spareparts also that 'settings' was taking alot of usage time in usage statistics. A simple reboot did the trick from here on. But I am guessing I had installed something which made some app not close properly..
Maybe it is better to have a task manager/killer for these situations.
Running and Screen On percentages should not have too much of a difference if your testing and not using the phone while screen is off (music, bg stuff)
You could try juicedefender, it helps improve battery life by disabling unneeded connections while the phone is not in use

Current widget shows monstrous battery usage

Current widget constantly shows valued above 150ma on my dhd running android revolution 2.0.11. What could be the cause?

I actually meant whats OP's standby drain, but if yours is 171mA that's pretty high for standby (unless you're charging ).
To be sure, check Currentwidget log and see what it is over a period of time when the screen was off.
You can check what's been running by doing this...
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Go to Battery History
Change Other Usage to Partial Wake Use
Anything that's been keeping the phone awake will be listed.
As I said, my usual is around 2-5mA with screen off, that's with wifi or 3G always on, Facebook sync 4hrs, weather sync 3hrs, Flickr sync once a day and Gmail push.

with cm7 and radio 26.04.00:
-150,250ma with screen on
-18ma with screen off
with cm7 and radio 26.06.03.24:
-127 with screen on
-13ma with screen on
I use setcpu interactive, as I found as a good compromise
I saw a wierd behaviour, no matter the radio or other settings...
I use h3g, that's proven to be more drainin than gsm...but waste of battery is less with 3hg than italian Tim (gsm)... automatic brihtness seems more battery drainin than 90% brihtness....
another crap is the very poor radio-hardware.....my desireHD goes from umts to roaming whereas my little huawei ideos is always on umts (like old blackstone)....and battery goes down...
Did you get the current widget work now? I have the same problem, never be able to make the apps to write the log file, my two hd2 phone installed with desire_DL 3.5 SD version, both have the same problem. i kicked the log but never get the log file wrote.

Settings->About Phone->Battery->Battery Use
Get yourself rooted and grab SetCPU. I have a profile set on that which underclocks my CPU when the screen is off. Doing this GREATLY increased my battery life.
I also use Tom Hubalek's Battery Gauge Widget to help me monitor my battery. But, after using the RCMix S v2.0 ROM and calibrating my battery (and the mentioned CetCPU settings) I get a good day out of my phone with a lot of wifi and 3g usage.
Never had any issue so far with my battery... I am checking battery usage in the settings menu but it is not enough. Need to see what exactly using my battery 'cause its unacceptable to drain 60% in 5 hours... The only thing I can see that something is using (waking up) the phone even when the screen is turned off...
I am using SetCPU as well with Smartass governor... can not be the problem...
Also set a profile for screen off - i have it set to 245min-245max smartass. It seems to save battery more than just set on the main screen.

Have you tried changing the Wi-Fi sleep policy? Also, pocket mode and fastboot, if you have those options.
My SetCPU is set to OnDemand. I thought Smartass was unstable and gobbled more power than it should? I dunno, though, I use whatever the ROM developer uses for the ROM; I don't change anything.
But you're right, my phone has lost 61% in 14 hours. 60 in 5 is wrong.
I think JuiceDefender has some of the features you're looking for, though:

Ach, I have mine to 245-600MHz when the screen is off. Any less and my rom is lacky when the screen wakes. Had the same settings as you for other none Sense 3.0 ROM's though. MAJOR power saving. If you leave your phone downloading, though, the screen off profile kills the download rate.
Check it out, upload a file to your phone via wifi, turn the screen off and watch the speed plummet to about 100kbs!
EDIT:
Anyway, I had a massive power saving when I used this ROM:

Dialer
If you're using a gingerbread based ROM, it could also be the dialer. At least it is for me. Sometimes he just goes crazy and I have to reboot the phone. Apparently the dialer checks the phones proximity using the sensors again and again.
For further reference and solutions see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1069251
Juice defender and Setcpu are in the same basket as task killers.
If you are using Smartass you don't need any profiles. Check your widgets, probably you have one which updates every second and kills your battery.

Just use the stock App Manager in settings. And if battery is an issue, go to About Phone, then battery and you can see whats been using it. Hope this helped
i like ZDbox app.
don't use task manager they screw **** up more then they fix, suggestion,
Find the list of safe to remove apps and remove ones u don't need, apps lik keis, mms, gmail/email, etc are constantly running, remove and replace wirh 3rd party counterparts.
Use a rom with CIQ removed, use undervolting scripts helps with battery aswell.
I can't stress this enough, DONT USE TASK KILLERS unless u know what their actually designed for.
Think of it like a PC in this sense, if you use taskmanager and kill a load of programs, depending on what u kill, can have horrible side effects, in the sense of android, when an apps not closed properly, peices can still exist in the ram.
Those peices can have effects on that, and other programs on your phone.
Your best bet for clearing ram is a reboot.
Simple, as for seeing programs running, hold home and hit taskmanager (plz keep in mind the above)
Or simply go to SETTINGS>applications>memory use and click running tab on top right.
Hope this helps. Peace

Ye there's no way it should b doin that..
10pm to 5:30am my battery drops 7-10%
@OP
2 possible solutions:
1.) Above post gut it pretty good
2.) Kernels not allowing deep sleep mode, flash a new kernel
#2 seems more plausible at this point considering your OP in full.
If its abnormal battery drain screen off ur phones not enabling deep sleep.
At this point most apps are effectively "paused" or slowed down
Making the battery drain almost irrelevant, my battery dies about 1% hourly screen off
Thanks to this mode.
Apps like SetCPU etc. Can also cause this if configured incorrectly
If using a CPU. Control app, uninstall it, trust the phone enough to do
Its own thing.
I will never recommend taskmanagers or CPU utilitys, if I did, what's the point in kernel deving besides OC?

Nandroid is the backup through recovery. These are not the same thing, but you absolutely need to do them both. Immediately. It's a 10 second operation that can save you hours of time later.
maybe it's just me, but 1% loss per hour doesn't seem too bad.

My guess is probably not as most custom roms have already been debloated.
Keep in mind too, as your battery ages, it's performance will decrease, so on a 1.5 year old battery, a 1% an hour drain really isn't too bad imo. you might be able to make it better, but it's up to you if you want to.put the time into trying.

It might, but I'd rather see an idle BBS log from you.
charged, reboot and turn on wifi before I went to bed last night. It did change some of metric, however it still dropped 8% from 98% to 90%...
My battery is about 3 months old, any suggestion what else to do to find out which app/process is consuming most of the battery?

Looking at your screenies, what I can tell right off is that many of your apps are polling constantly.
Android OS or System (I can't remember which atm) is probably your location settings broadcasting. Go into Settings>Location and also Google App Settings>Location and see what your location is set at.
HD Widgets is polling your location to do the weather, which is understandable, but see if you can change the refresh rate to further out (maybe every hour or so).
Carrier IQ and VisualVoicemail are only able to be disabled via Root. Once you get Root, then you can disable those (either freeze in Titanium Backup or pull the app out of /system/app or use Aerowinder's debloater).

polling apps: from wakelock, carrier IQ and visualvoicemail are the two that in the top, could be ones that using most of battery? wechat(x252) and weibo(x149) have high number but very short in time, do they have big impact on battery drop?
Location service is checked on all three items. I will turn it off to see the impact. I have to remember turn on before using gmap and turn it off after close gmap.
HD widges, already set the location to my home, not using 'detect current location'. fresh rate is 1 hour. I will turn on those battery saving features(don't update when screen off)
thanks.

I understand why people like WLD, but I really need to see a BetterBatteryStats log to fully understand what's happening. But you need root, carrier iq is pretty much spyware.

Post your logs here and I'll have a look. 4+ hours idle time, little or no usage. During the night is best.

If you are going to try and read that, then see you next week, hahaha.

Best thing to do is what Aerowinder said above and let it sit idle for 4+ hours or overnight with BBB running.
Then what we want to see are screen shots of:
Since Unplugged/Processes
Since Unplugged/ Wakelocks
Since Unplugged/Partial Wakelocks.
My superfecta is CarrierIQ ftw, Android OS (location) for Place, WeChat for Show and Sync services (calendar, g/email) for 4th.
One thing that I do like is that I do not see any FB, G+ or Twitter in your screenies. Those three suck (literally) on battery.
