[Q] 2.1 style search - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i have android 2.2 at the moment. is there a way to get the old style of search behavior on android 2.2? where you double tap the search key and the whole phone search comes up?
thanks!

Are you talking about being able to search for content on the phone? If so hit search key, tap the icon to the left of the text field, and select the things you want to show up in searches.

thank you but while i did mean being able to search for content on the phone, i meant something more like in 2.1, how whenever even if you're in the browser, if you press search once, it'll popup the browser address bar field, and if you press it again, it'll pop up google search for content on your phone. the google search wasn't its own application back then, but it is now.
basically the advantage to what i'm talking about over what we have now, is that you don't have to be on your home screen to bring up the phone-content search, you can be anywhere and double tab search, and also the search phone-content thing loaded a lot faster on 2.1 when it wasn't an application, than it does now.
do you have any idea how i can get this functionality in 2.2?

Don't think you can.

New Incredible User - some sense weirdness?

Sorry if this has been answered, but I did some searches and couldn't find any answers.
Basically, I just moved from the Droid to the DI, and am loving it so far. Sense has really surpassed my expectations (especially after root) - however, there are some frustrating quirks i've noticed.
The biggest one occurs in web browsing. If I tap the address bar, it only automatically selects the page's url after http:/, meaning that I can't search a term without deleting the http, and then typing in my search phrase. I poked around in settings but couldn't find a preference for selecting all text in the address bar.
Has anyone found a way around this? Thanks!
When you tap the address bar, tap the search (magnifying glass) that will delete everything in the box so you can type your search string.
You can just tap the search from anywhere to bring up the search function...that's not part of the browser.
Thanks for the tip. Small thing, but just part of adjusting to the new phone. Loving it!

It is part of the browser. If you look the searched items in the browser will be different from the searched items when you just press the magnifying glass without being in the browser.

[Q] Change from HTC's "Search Anywhere" to "Google Search"

I am running MikZ 1.16 and have noticed that, when I press the hardware search button, "Search Everywhere" comes up instead of "Google Search." I was wondering if there's a way to change the default to "Google Search." I have looked everywhere for the solution, but have come up empty-handed. I greatly appreciate any suggestions
The only way I know to do this is to click the search buttom-menu-search settings-searchable items and uncheck everything but web. Of course the downside to this is that from now on you will only be able to search the web when using the hardware key, but thats only true if you are not in an app.
Thank you for the tip! I have already done that step. While it does alleviate some of what I don't like about "Search Anywhere," it's not the solution that I seek. HTC's search is clunky and visually annoying when it repeats what I type over and over below the search box. I should clarify that I want the hardware button to open the default "Google Search" app, completely bypassing "Search Anywhere."

IE built-in dictionary option

I was reading a scientific article on my phone today and thought that it would be cool if IE offered some built in dictionary. Since copy and paste was implemented when you press a word it is automatically highlighted and the little icon pops up that enables you to paste. I was thinking it would be awesome if, in addition to the copy icon, there was another icon that looked like a magnifying class and when you pressed it a mini popup came out of the word with the definition from dicitonary.com or something.
Is this possible?
Would anyone else welcome such a feature?
Highlight the word and press the Search button on your phone.
Just tested this but it requires many more clicks/presses.
Your method:
Press word
Press search button
Press search result
My method:
Press word
Press define button
There would also be significantly less waiting on the data connection if my method was implemented, even more so if it was an offline method.
I would welcome the feature, but there is no such or plans as far as I know. It was good back in the days that Encarta was available and we could use the accelerator in IE to find the meaning of words.
The option given by RG is good enough.
True RG's suggestion is better than nothing, my problem is that it's inefficient and I want my phone to be as efficient as possible.
Ahh encarta

Return to forum (thread) listing?

Am I missing some way to easily navigate back to the forum page when I'm at the bottom of a thread of postings?
vBulletin (that's not what we're using here, right?) has a dropdown at the bottom of every page where you can select a forum to navigate to, and by default it always has the current forum being read already selected, so you can just hit GO.
Here in XDA I get to the bottom of a page and can't figure out how to get back to the topic listing, except by going back to the top of the page, and clicking on the forum name in the forum->subforum->threadTitle navigation.
This is very cumbersome.
Pressing the BACK button on the keyboard is certainly an option, but this suffers from not updating the topic listing page, so I can't easily see which threads have new posts since I last visited them.
Sorry for the small novel explaining this.
If you use Chrome then you could use the XDA Toolbar (see my sig), made by one of the handsome and witty intelligent devs of this very site
It currently has a "Jump to top of page" button on it, which will halve your problem, but there will be a release soon that will include the ability to double-click that very same button and go to the parent forum (exactly like what you're asking for). The advantage of this is that you have to be neither at the top or bottom of the page to use it.
If you don't use Chrome, get used to pressing the home key a lot
Thanks for the response! Yes, I found the 'top' line quite a while ago, but never thought of using the home key. That helps a lot.
I look forward to the upgrade!

Web site search and pop up keyboards-KF

I am having a problem with the quick search and kindle fires pop up keyboard. If you use the quick search within a forum the keyboard pops up then disappears. This is using the stock kindle Kb and Swype. And dolphin HD and silk as well.
The only way to search and have the keyboard stay up is to go into advanced search. Then both keyboards work fine.
Just wondering if it might be a glitch in the web coding.
When I say quick search I mean clicking the search button within a forum typing in the search field that pops up immediately.
Does it the same way in search this thread too.
BTW, I just checked it out on my droidx and it behaves the same with Swype and also the multi touch keyboard.
Not sure if I was clear in my first post.
I am talking about searches on THIS forum. XDA-Developers.com
I am not talking about searches in general.
I am talking about the specific problem happening on this forum!!
Are you referring to the Contextual Search "pop-up"?
That probably was never intended for mobile use but you can easily turn that off in your User CP > Edit Options or this URL:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/profile.php?do=editoptions
and uncheck "Enable Contextual Search"
Thanks for the reply. No I am not referring to the contextual search. That it's already disabled in my cp.
If you look right above the first post in this thread there is a "search this thread" button on the right. If I click that, a search box comes up right below the button. It is in that box that I am having the problem. Same for the "search this forum" button on the forum index.
The only way to search is to then go into advanced search. Then the keyboard will stay up so I can type.
Btw, thanks again. I realized I may not have been real clear in my first post.
