I have had an original Mytouch 3G and have rooted it in the past. I have put custom roms on it and tried out tons of stuff. I've been using a Mytouch 3G slide. When I was given it sadly it had the froyo update putting s-on. I know there is a method to root it, but have a couple of questions.
1)What is the disadvantages of S-on?
2)Can I flash different roms on a phone with s-on?
3)Can I back up a rom?
4)If I root my phone and use a wifi tether app will my carrier(T-mobile) know I am using wifi tether and charge me the fee for it?
I appreciate all help. Thanks!

1) The only disadvantage I know of is less customization options (no custom boot screen, extremely difficult to change system font etc...).
2) Yes, any rom you want.
3) Yes.
4) Nope =D

Ok guys I am coming from a Samsung Moment (of hell...) anyways, I really want to root this device and remove all the Sprint bloatware. My first question is on the moment loading the root and recovery onto the device for the first time would cause a complete data wipe, which meant a complete system rebuild. Is this the case here? In other words if I use toasts method of rooting will I lose all my data and programs and have to reinstall or will my data be fine?
Second question is if I downgrade to install Toasts root, after I remove the sprint garbage software will I be able to reinstall the HTC update? (as I believe it fixes some of the issues with the camera, etc).
Third there are so many threads its hard to nail down whats going on with rooting etc, is there any negatives to rooting right now? I.E. any features on the phone I will lose?
Thanks for the help...

To my understanding, you would lose nothing in the process, functional wise. Prolly lose all apps installed.
The threads you need are:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696961 (downgrade)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690762 (toast root)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=697636 (flipz rom)
Again, as I understand it (with help from joey), you downgrade, root/gain recovery, flash rom. this new rom is supposedly the update (radio and system) just with root enabled.
I can't be any clearer really as I have yet to do this and am learning/searching as well.
Or you could use unrevoked to remove all of the bloatware. Unless you are concerned about needing a full time root.
Unrevoked will NOT allow you to remove bloatware! Only toast method will let you remove apps for good.

Umm you should probably read the sticky instead of me explaining what's already there.

What will happen if you accept the OTA update after the phone has already been rooted (to fix the camera)?
Also, let's say that someone comes out with a custom 2.2 version that works well on the Evo (rooted obviously). If I wanted to put that on my phone, would I have to wipe everything? Or is there a way to just upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 without losing anything?

Found what you are talking about in another thread. It deals with the NAND protection.
Hey guys, I plan to root my 3G Slide with this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754669
However, I would like to know if it's possible to load Cynogenmod 5 or 6 on it before proceeding. Thanks
It seems so. The intructions say to have a ROM of your liking on the SDCard to flash. I've had root since the original method so I won't test. The article seem to answer you question though. I don't see the point in creating a new Topic

Regardless of how you root, you can load whatever ROM you want.

The only method I recommend for rooting is nbetcher's method, search the dev forum for it if you want. CM6 is the most current version for the Slide, why would you want CM5?
Also in the future questions should be posted in Q/A not development

I agree with cingall. I was one with problems getting the loop method to work consistantly, and the one you linked seems to be a chopped up version of nbethcers. I've rooted twice now using nbetchers method without issue and was originally running cyanogenmod.

Yeah I could never get the loop to work either it would never recognize my device in ADB. Luckily I stumbled across a post on Cyanogenmod's Slide forum that had an exploid root guide and that is how I finally rooted.
Nbetchers root method is definitely easier. In order to get the other method to work you have to unplug usb and loop then boot recovery but plug it back in before recovery pops up. It's really annoying. But to answer your question you should definitely load whatever rom you want onto the root of your SD card before rooting and then at the end you can flash it.
So I've been researching some different root methods, but I haven't really been able to find a specific thread based on what I'm looking for.
I'm looking for Wireless Tether usage a couple of times a month (e.g. when I'm traveling or something like that). This is ALL I want root for. I don't want a custom ROM or anything else.
What is the best root method if all I want is Wireless Tether to work? I don't even care if I have to "re-enable" it from the phone after a boot (e.g. a soft root). I'm trying to stay as close to stock as I can.
Please don't post about loading up a new ROM, I don't want that. I just want a clean, easy root to get wireless tether.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and assistance!
If Unrevoked 3.21 works for you, that would be the simplest option. It's not the least intrusive, but it doesn't require you to re-run it each time you start up your phone.
It doesn't require you to flash a custom ROM.

Thanks Noxious,
Could you elaborate on the method that is the least intrusive, even if I have to re-run it everytime I startup my phone? I'm assuming I have to re-run it from the phone and not the computer? I'm ok with that - and would actually prefer it if it's the least intrusive.
Also, how much will Unrevoked 3 change my device? Does it automatically load up a new recovery and all that?
I would also like to root for the same thing. How stable is wireless tether. I want to root just to use the wireless tether feature. I have read other forum posts stating it cuts in and out.
Basically I dont want to root if the wireless tether feature is kinda ify.
Can't you simply root and leave the stock ROM with Sense and all, and install Wireless Tether, SetCPU, and whatever else you'd want? Or do you need to have a ROM that someone's already made with all those things added to it?
Personally I'm holding off on Rooting until this 2.3/3.0 update.
actually in my opinion the unrevoked3 method is th easiest. the hardest part about that method is the driver installation. you do need to make sure you have all drivers installed and htc sync installed and then removed before you begin. If not it will hang during the rot process. unrevoked method of rooting actually changes nothing visually except for adding the superuser app(this is an easy indicator of being rooted). and the free wireless tether app from google is pretty much hands down the best. it is the one that most people include in their custom roms here is the apk for the wireless tether.

yes it does. it will install the clockworkmod recovery. not sure if it is the latest one but it is no big deal. do make sure that you make a backup as soon as you root. have fun buddy.

Are there any root options that don't? I'm just trying to stay as close to stock as possible with just the SU permissions to enable wireless tether. Thanks again.

None that i am aware of. But you need the recovery to make a backup. You can search the forum some more but I am pretty sure every root method requires some sort of recovery method.

i have a brand new evo with stock software... how would i get free wifi tether without getting a coustom/different rom?
anything will be appreciated..
thanks,
Zero.
Well first I'm obligated to inform you that this is the wrong section for a question. Now that I'm done with that, if you root and flash the stock Rom that's rooted, you can download WiFi tether and enjoy!
Just root it and download wireless tether. No custom rom needed
Depending on what your hardware, build, and HBOOT versions are, you can prob follow this guide: [ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02/2.10 S-OFF - Got the Game Upset Edition - Updated 12.16.10
Make sure you READ everything first carefully so you know what you are getting yourself into. And if your phone versions do not match, you will have to wait for either unrEVOked team or someone else to come up with a solution to root the new EVO's.
Good luck

Pdanet can be used without root and it can be used wireless with bluetooth.
ok this is my first sprint phone ive ever really dealt with on flashing roms and what not, currently its running stock, what do I need to do to flash/do to get a custom rom working on this device? do I need to turn off S-Off its currently On, and do I need to make backup of the radio's or anything like that?
Really?

Take a look at the link below. You will need to unlock your bootloader, install a custom recovery and the necessary superuser binary. Afterwards you can flash a custom ROM via recovery. S-off isn't a necessity on this device like it is with newer HTC devices, but it can be useful at times.

gotcha, the freedompop devices that ive ran into already at least for the HTC Evo are bootloader unlocked, with a custom recovery, I just wanted to make sure it was ok to flash a rom.. cause I know nothing about the way the radios work on sprints setup.., I know ill loose 4G which isn't a big deal since wimax isn't here anyways and that's gonna be shutdown sometime next year.. Another question is whats a good rom to put on this?

Can't really recommend a particular ROM, especially since I haven't had this device in several years. Best bet is to go read through some of the ROM threads in Development & Original Development and find a few to flash and then decide which one you like the best.
