Via RSD Lite. You can download it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100585 ( drivers are embedded in the zip )
Download and install Motorola Defy driver
- Download and install RSD Lite
- Open RSD Lite
- Enter Bootloader Mode on you phone (Power+VolUp)
- Connect phone to you PC (USB)
- Open RSD - Lite
- Flash new SBF

this link is from this forum..hope this will work
it keeps failing.... I downloaded another rsdlite and I still have the same issues, I wonder what the problem is.
There are a few things you can try to resolve that issue.
-Try different versions of RSD lite. Usually the latest 5.0 works.
-Try admin mode and/or compatibility mode.
-Try US eclair and froyo sbfs.
-If you have another PC try both xp and 7. one will work.
Remember - depending on how you installed your custom Rom you may not be able to "downgrade" back to the official Rom that you require. So if you have installed a 2.2. Rom and didn't use the fixed sbf method then you will not be able to flash back to the official 2.1 Rom. Likewise if you flashed the leaked 2.3 Rom without using the fixed sbf method then you can't go back to a 2.2 Rom.

Another computer worked like a charm, same OS Win7, weird.
Thank you everybody for helping out.
You are welcome sir! I have gone though this alot. Just sent my defy in I had to get back to stock. I practically completely bricked it. Desktop win7 wouldn't flash sbf but laptop win7 would. Was getting stuck at flashing group 33 at 3%.

Thank U Arpith.fbi!
I had to unroot and reclaim my sh**ty stock apps to install the recent US froyo update and found this thread. First time using RSD Lite, worked flawless. Thanks for the link to the sbf's. Tried #26 first and upon reboot it stuck my phone in an "m" screen loop. removed the batt, sim, and sd,... replaced... then phone wouldn't even show a sign of life. Got the white LED upon usb connection and that was it. RSD Lite still managed to flash it with sbf #25 and I was booted back to my defy with all my data except unrooted and all those crappy apps back. Installing official froyo update now and no more exclamation point!!! Gonna root again with superoneclick, hoping this will be my last update battle on the defy. Thanks again

Yesterday Samsung released a update for Bell GT-I9000M which fixed the missing 3-button combo issue (i.e faulty secondary bootloader, SBL).
Unfortunately the fix is currently only available to Bell customers thru Kies, so a registry hack and excess flashing is needed to update the bootloader to another variants.
I have been working on a new P-SBL Redbend fix, but unfortunately I bricked my phone (three times actually ) while testing it.
It seems that Redbend cannot program multiple blocks in a single run, unless the OTA commands are used (they are currently unknown). I could program the two blocks but the phone turned in a brick after succesfull programming. The reason is unknown.
Thats why I decided to revert back to Odin method.
With the newest method it is unnecessary to flash XWJM5 firmware in first, as the compatible Primitive Bootloader is included in the same package and will be updated at the same time with the Secondary Bootloader.
So here is the procedure (once again):
Preparations: Make sure you have the drivers installed (i.e Kies is recognizing the phone), adb available and "USB Debugging" turned on in "Settings -> Applications -> Development" menu. Type *#0228# in the dialer and check Voltage value (without USB plugged in) is atleast 3800(mV).
1. Unplug the phone from the computer (if connected)
2. Kill all Kies related software (tray agent, etc)
3. Start Odin3 v1.3 Downloader
4. Plug in the phone to the computer
5. Start a new command prompt and navigate to the folder / drive where adb is located.
If you haven´t downloaded adb yet, get it here.
6. Type "adb reboot download" to the command prompt and press enter.
7. Move to Odin3 v1.3 downloader and select the "Aries_P-SBL.tar.md5" as PDA file. Make sure "Phone Bootloader Update" is ticked and re-partition is unticked. Do not select any other files but "Aries_P-SBL.tar.md5".
8. Press "Start" button to launch the update process. It will take around three seconds to complete. After the update phone will reboot automatically.
Download the fix: GT-I9000_P-SBL_RCVDL_FIX_ODIN.7z
Both bootloaders are the latest version and therefore compatible with each other.
UPDATE 10/02/2010: Previous methods replaced with the latest (& the safest). ZERO bricks reported so far.
UPDATE 10/18/2010: If you don't want to read, then skip to message 124 of this topic to get the version compatible for your phone, and read all messages that follow for all other releases.
Wow you champ! this should make lot's of people happy.. mine works fine...

Two things I didn't do from your instructions
1. didn't tick repartition
2. Only had Odin 1.0 (I think that is where is FAILED)
At least I know what to do if my phone comes back neutered.
GREAT NEWS!
So I assume that this method will also work on the international version of i9000, which was sold in europ and asia as far as I know.
Am I right? Anyone test it on an international version i9000 yet?

uVex, but you did not use this method am I correct? You used KIES?
Like you said in the other thread: "Just try it with a German T-Mobile Galaxy.
I use Kies to make the Update. After flash phone goes black and stay black "
Is there someone who succeed to install this fix on a Belgian "Proximus" device.
the answer is probably obvious, but this fix should work for every firmware, and having installed a lagfix (RyanZA 2.3in my case) does not matter either ?
Lagfix will not change anything.
This fix writes only BML4 partition.
thought so, but thanks for confirming.

will this change my original branded firmware or is only the 1 file that needs to be updated?

Any RomManager or Root installed ?
Hi Guys,
Just wondering if anyone can help me here.
I have a Defy, its sim free and unbranded and have been told that I will need to flash it to put CM7 or other ROMs on.
So I downloaded v4.9 and have turned the handset off and hold up while rebooting.
I followed the instruction and put the USB cable in but for some reason it will not pick the phone up properly or let me try to flash it.
It has pinged up that it has installed the USB Flash drivers.
So wondering if you guys can help?

Was told this would be an easier way!!
Have managed to install the root and the backup but cant get the rest of it to work properly.
Tried about 3-4 times and just too complicated.
I had a similar problem using 4.9 on my desktop. Not sure what the deal was. Went and used my wife's notebook with no problem. I ended up going to 4.7 on my desktop and have had no problems since.
Uninstall/reinstall rsdlite and get latest driver. Or try diff usb cable .
Try also running rsd as admin

Hi guys.
I just got a defy, first smartphone I have so I have no idea what I'm doing, I'm just trying to follow what seems to be the most popular guide to put CM7 on it.
Current question:
1) How do I check whether my phone is rooted properly?
2) In settings -> applications - > manage applications -> All > I can see SndInitDefy in the list (also under Dowloaded tab). If I click on it I can choose "uninstall". Could I do something wrong by uninstalling it and then installing it again?
Replies are greatly appreciated as I'm waiting for somebody to help me out so i can continue

Check lastest Motorola drivers. If not work, change to another pc to test.
Thanks for the reply.
I installed all the drivers and managed to root it.
I'm wondering, should I do anything besides just plugging in the phone and trying to run the program, or should i somehow get it into "bootloader mode", I've read that somewhere but not sure...

Yes you need the phone in bootloader.
To do that turn the phone off & then press & hold the volume UP button then press the power ON button. The phone will then go into bootloader & you can then connect the USB cable to the PC ready for RDS Lite flashing
Follow this great guide by Higgsy regarding the RDS flashing process - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853674
Alright, I got it into bootloader mode and the phone itself says
Battery ok
ok to program
transfer mode:
usb
But still no joy
Also, I wonder whether it's ok to use that sbf file:
JRDNEM_U3_3.4.3-11_BLUR_SIGN_SIGNED_USAJRDNEMARAB1B8RTGB03A.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNFRYORTGB_P010_A007_HWp3_Service1FF
It says USA but I'm in Europe, does it matter? I got it from the guide mentioned in my first post, apparantly it's "the one that Quarx used"?

Took a look at it, he says "##WARNING: be careful when flashing 2.51 firmware, firstly its patched so root isn't achievable by the usual methods, and isn't easy to downgrade back to other firmware - I suggest you search and read the various topics on it. My advice is to use 2.21 UK or 2.34 Deblur firmware##"
I just got the phone so i'm guessing it's 2.51 firmware. Is it necessary to upgrade it first?
Also, how do I know which country my phone is from?
If I shouldn't use the version which Quarx used on a European phone, I have no idea which one to pick from these:

Some more more info about the phone:
system version: Blur_Version.2.21.0.MB525.Retail.en.GB

OK your phone looks like it's a UK version running Blur version 2.21 & Android 2.1 eclair.
The sbf you are trying to flash - 3.4.3-11 is a UK froyo with MotoBlur (the USA bit in the filename is nothing to worry about & is OK to use) - it is a good ROM & I used to have that myself until I flashed the Nordic deblur sbf.
The warning that Higgsy mentioned was at that time version 2.51 had been released & it wasn't possible to downgrade to the older eclair versions.
I've only done a quick search in the Defy forums for the greyed out RDS Lite Start Button issue & there's some posts about it. But you could try uninstalling the RDS Lite & Moto Drivers programs then reboot your PC. Then reinstall, reboot your PC & try again with RDS Lite.
Hope this helps.

Alright, I'll try that and hope that works. Sucks to be so bad at stuff like this
Thanks man, appreciate it.
No problem hope it works out.
Have a search on the Defy forum if it doesn't work as I'm sure there's been a few others with that same problem you have.

So that seems to be ok, thanks for that. Now the following steps and hoping I don't brick it or I'll be dead in the water
I'm now going to try and get SndInitDefy_1.4_2.apk installed via the SD card...

I wonder: if the new version comes out, will I have to do all these steps again or how does that work?
New problem:
I installed 2nd initi 1.42 from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032212
I rebooted the phone, pressing volume down while it was starting, and now I get a screen with a "triangle and an exclamation mark" and the little android guy
Phone doesn't do anything, can't even turn it off by pushing the power button...
edit: figured I'd just pull out the battery and put it in again, managed to turn it on normally again but I wonder what the problem was with trying to put it into the boot menu...
New problem:
The guide says:
"9. boot into boot menu by pressing the vol down button when the blue LED lights up on boot up"
But I never get a blue led like this guy does:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3ZHocqB2yI
I have no idea why I'm not getting a blue led
Does it mean 2nd init didn't install properly or something? (it said that it did)
from memory, it needs to boot up twice I think, for it to start working

Make sure you have the latest drivers from Samsung installed on your PC. Reboot the phone, reboot the PC, start as fresh as you can. Best way to go about it is to Odin EC05, One Click root with CM3 (purple version) and go from there.
Check the stickied thread with the old stickies in it, you'll find everything you need in there. And last but not least, for the love of everything holy, don't use the stock cord. Get something decent, blackberry cables seem to work the best for me. Make sure the port you're plugged into on your PC is on the back (so it's direct into the board) not one of the front ones.
Well first off, having the thread title as "???" does not help anyone with searching for answers.
I'm trying to understand your situation: So you say you were on Eclair and rooted, and then was able to upgrade to Froyo while rooted? That's not possible. The update would have failed after seeing a file system mismatch.
For Eclair and Froyo, the 1-click root method works. However, for Gingerbread you have to Odin a custom kernel and recovery, then install the Superuser app. Once you have CWM installed you can flash any EL30 rom you wish. The modem is upgraded manually. Look in the dev section for the sticky thread that has the thread link in it.

To follow up on your Odin woes: use a different USB port that is directly on the motherboard; and a different cable.

Well i know that but the site wouldn't let me name it anything, I mean like 15 different titles that i wasan't allowed to use. Anyway I was able to fix the phone up, i was having a driver issue & that's what was stopping Odin from detecting the phone in downloader mode.
I tried to patch my phone with CM9-ICS-MR0-111207-jordan-KERNEL-2.3.4-Quarx build and when I rebooted I get this
bootloader
09.10
err:A5,70,00,00,23
battery ok
ok to program
connect USB
data cable
Now I have googled this and found many options.
So far I have tried these.
droidforums.net/forum/droid-x-hacks/68222-unbricking-your-droid-x.html
When I do this I get a error (in linux ATM so cant tell you the name will get it ASAP) and I have got rsd lite 5.7 and the latest drivers from the motorola site. I have tried many roms and placed it in C:, My documents, in the RSD folder, on the desktop, in the download folder. Always open the program in admin.
Also this:
droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-sbf/23638-linux-solution-your-windows-rsd-lite-problems.html
I have tried many of there ISO images and all boot and say they start to do something, then it says failed! rebooting and then it reboots and says to remove battery and go into these option (which I cant as it will only boot on the boot loader screen I tried to get into recovery and no luck) so it was a fail also.
I hope there is a solution as this is a pain, I may of put a to high rom on and cant revert back??
I am sick of googling and alot of the links come back to this site and have tried many but all seem to be repetitive and what I have tried.
Thanks in advance

Get the baseband switcher app It changes the network related files to the ones correct for your country/network! You need to set it manually, though, so, it may take a couple of tries to figure out which one is the best choice
