Hi All,
Being a newb, I couldn't post in workshed's thread. I found a solution to the navigation issues (The cause is well over my head, so someone please forward to workshed for me??)....
After flashing to GSB-3.5 I noticed navigation would randomly freeze, then cause a full reboot, not just a force close usually after about 10 minutes. I waited for 3.6 assuming Shed would catch it and fix, but the problem persisted through 3.7-odex with gapps 0613.
Reading through his thread; other's were suggesting the issue wasn't in the rom but in the GAPPS package or possibly in the CM themes or supercharger script, or possibly the titanium backup-"restore apps and data settings"...
I religiously Nandbackup and Titanium back-up all system and App data (due to all the scary phone brick warnings)
Anyway whenever I flash a new Rom, I run titanium backup, nandbackup, delete the android secure folder, then reboot into recovery wipe the caches, flash the rom, then the recommended GAPPS, cach2cache (sp?), CM and android themes, then reboot, allow the GAPPS to full install from the market installer (some addition apps install since i have the backup apps to google account option checked in CM settings), then i download titanium backup (pro) and I only restore the user apps with data (never batch restore system data.) I selectively restore my user dictionary, bookmarks, wifi, bluetooth settings.
This time I restored all of the user apps without data and only selectively restored data to a couple of apps like cardiotrainer
I remembered someone suggesting to delete the maps data and cache in settings>applications>manage applications, so i did that, then uninstalled MAPS, then redownloaded from market. after the install I rebooted and drove home from work...
navigation was perfect, I restored a couple of app's data, then drove to work the next morning...perfect...when it hasn't gone for more than 10minutes in the last 3or4 weeks without restarting my eris. I'll continue to test for the next few days, but i believe the solution was to not restore user app data for maps and possibly other apps.
background:
I had tried wiping and flashing gsb 3.4., 3.5, 3.6, and 3.7 and both 0dexed and non odexed 3.6 and 3.7 with and without themes and with and without supercharger., while running supercharger I'd use agressive, ballanced, and multitasking settings. after reading the one comment about wiping the map cache and data then reinstall, i tried it too (but without the whole re-flash process... with the same affect full reboot in ~10minutes) after every iteration I'd reboot and drive to or from work ---2 attempts per day for a while... I realize it was a little naive to assume that it was something to do with my setup and not the code somewhere...
All that to say with every new flash i always restored user apps with data, but never restored system data like people have said, but this time i dawned on me not to restore any data and try it.... i drove home it worked, i restored the data i mentioned above, and drove to work it still worked.
Sorry for being so wordy, but i wanted to give the dev's enough to troubleshoot or at least note for people not to restore all data...
Thanks for all the great work guys I really appreciate all the effort!!!
*update- worked for a day then the same force close issue happened.
I also tried Telenav GPS-nav with the same force close results. I'm a newbie so maybe don't take much stock in this but I believe the issue is in the memory management setup either with CM7 or GSB3.4-3.7, to test the theory I flashed the macdroid's Everevolv port which only contains "bits" of cm7 and an older release of Google maps... if google maps works in the older release, i'll update to the newest release and try it using this Rom
Maps issue
*update 2- I flashed Macrodroid's ported Rom found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1134907
He had pre-installed an older Maps version (be careful, it tried to auto-update right away) NAV worked perfectly for a couple longer trips... then I updated to the newest Gmaps and crash city!!!
Nice Rom!! less customization than GSB 3.7, but quick, no crashes, Macdroid included a flashable launcher pro (which I use), cache2cache works fine, I haven't tried supercharger but i will.
I'll try to find this maps version.apk to install on gsb 3.7 to see how it works... if it works fine I'll have to apologize personally to workshed and the CM team for having a smidgen of doubt. I totally dig the work those guys do!!
If you're still working on this there is a thread going here ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185340&page=5 ... about the Navigation problems. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be a fix for it yet.
Thanks, I'll make sure to share anything that might be useful

Usual disclaimer... I tried searching, I really did. I found one thread about restoring apps that confirms I followed what should be done, but I had something I didn't want happen... happen.
I flashed my first custom ROM the other day, and it went pretty much as planned/hoped with a couple of glitches. I did the latest stable Cyanogen (6.0.2), and had a couple of the problems that other people did... the email app didn't work (found the cure (new apk) on cyanogen's forum) and I couldn't send/receive MMS.
The cure I found for the latter was to wipe data/cache, which I did through clockworkmod recovery.
When I initially installed cyanogen, I signed into my google account, used Ti Backup to reinstall all my apps, and then activated the phone (*228) . Worked great, everything loaded.
When I wiped data/cache, after rebooting, I signed into my google account (just like before)... and before i could start restoring with Ti, my apps started downloading from the market. Took much longer than a Ti restore, and it missed Tasker (which I bought directly from the developer... and for some reason was not in my Ti backup).
So what happened with the second restore? should I have stopped all the downloads and restored with Ti?
I've since done a full apps+data backup with Ti backup that includes tasker (I have no idea why it wasn't included, it should have been, and I've since backup up profiles from within the app as well)... but am confused about not just repeating and the same thing happening with the restore.
Any suggestions?
I did a lot of reading before I did this to be sure I wouldn't lose anything. Here's the step by step for others, since I was unable to find it all in one place. This is for the MT4G/Glacier, no idea if the process is similar on other phones. You should probably still read, but I couldn't find any of this all in one place:
If you flash, here's what you need:
- Rooted phone (if you need to root, search for the gfree method, it's the easiest)
- ROM Manager from the Market. Get the premium version.
- TitaniumBackup from the Market.
- Sync turned on for your contacts and calendars in your google account.
1. Go into TitaniumBackup, set the option to store the settings on the SDCard. Go into Backup/Restore, hit menu, and run the batch to do a full backup of system and user apps/data.
2. Go into ROM Manager. At the top, click the option to install ClockworkRecovery. Make sure it installs version 3.0.0.5. Then click the option to reboot into recovery mode. In recovery, make a ROM backup of your existing ROM. It will store on the SD card. Reboot back into the OS.
3. Go back into ROM Manager, scroll down to Download ROM's. You should see CM7 Nightlies in there. Download the latest build. It will ask you if you want to also download the GAPPS package, grab that also. When it's done, it will ask you what you want to do... just cancel. Go to reboot in recovery mode.
4. In recovery:
- Wipe/Factory Reset
- Clear cache partition
- Advanced -> clear Dalvik cache
- On main screen, install ZIP from SD
- Navigate to sdcard->clockworkmod->downloads->teamdouche and select the CM7 zip for your phone that was downloaded
- When that is done, install another zip from sd, go into the goo.inside.me directory and install GAPPS zip
- Reboot phone from main menu
5. Enter your gmail creds that you used for your primary account from before
6. Cancel the additional downloads thing when it pops up, this will pop up again later after you enable wireless
7. Go into ROM Manager, Select the Fix Permissions option, reboot (wifi won't work unless you do this)
8. Enable wifi and join to your network
9. Eventually you will get the popup again. Select the stuff that you want installed.
It will pull down all of your apps from the market and install them. If you want to restore user data for the apps, you can go into titanium and click on the app, and restore it with the data. Don't do this until it's done updating from the market. Do NOT restore system level stuff. You will cause problems if you restore system level stuff from 2.2 or earlier on 2.3.x.
You should also install SetCPU from the market, set to start on boot, set conservative mode, and create a screen off profile that limits to 368mhz/conservative. In advanced, leave the defaults, except change the cpu up threshold to 75, and the scaling percent to 11 or 12. Massive battery improvements. You can overclock with this also, mine is only overclocked to around 1100mhz. Some people are running 1800mhz. I heard smartass mode instead of conservative is also good, but haven't tried it.
Keep in mind that if you have an HTC phone with the Sense Framework, you won't have that anymore. So if you liked the Sense dialer (which I did), you can't get it. The stock dialer is functional, but not the best. DialerOne and Dialer2 look the most interesting, but they still aren't as good. If you have CSipSimple installed, remove it. CM7 has SIP built into it, and CSipSimple confuses the phone when trying to make calls. If you liked the Sense clock widget, you can get a replacement, search for Beautiful Widgets on the market. The built in camera app is not Sense either, but does all the same things. The Gallery is awesome, best gallery I've ever seen (stacks that you can pull apart and flip through, very cool).
If GPS doesn't work, download GPS Status from the market and use it to clear the A-GPS data and cache. It's the only app that can do it. It's free.
Also, if you want to go back to your previous ROM, you can flash back with the ROM Manager backup that you made. The only thing is, you'll have to downgrade the clockwork recovery bootloader to 2.5.1.2 first. You can do this by flashing a zip from your SD card. The zip is available somewhere on these forums. I don't have a link, but you can find it by searching a bit. The 3.0.0.5 version cannot flash a Froyo or earlier ROM for some reason. I'm not going back, so I haven't done this.
My TitaniumBackup realized somehow that I installed fresh, and it automatically restored my apps and data. It did NOT on my friend's phone. But, he has the free version and I have the paid one. If it doesn't restore your app settings, you can manually go in and do it. One thing that I've never been able to restore is Good corporate email. It restores, but it won't send or receive. If anyone has ideas on this, post them.
Note that I flashed with build 35, and it's been rock solid. Your mileage may vary. If you already have the software noted above, the whole process only takes about 5-10 mins.
Edit: Recovery 3.0.0.6 was released, and works with 2.2 and 2.3. So you wouldn't have to downgrade the recovery to go back a version. As of this edit, you can grab it here if it's not showing up in ROM Manager yet: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952433
Something to add... if you are using ADW or LPP do a backup if those also. I find that if you install it fresh from the market and not TB then press restore settings in their preferences it will load all the custom icons and custom dock. It saves alot of time. Nice writup for the peeps that need the pointers for a fresh and fast install of a nightly
FYI, Titanium backup works great at restoring apps. I would be weary of restoring data between android versions however, because some of the data will be of a different type and could cause lots of issues. Thats the reason for the full data wipe before flashing in the first place.

I thought that was mostly because of system. The apps themselves still store their data in sqlite databases, and their schema should not change between versions of the actual OS. I might be wrong.
app data is fine, system data is what causes issues. I should have been more specific.

The only system stuff I install is the accounts back up, email data, wifi access points, and account and sync settings. I usually dont have a problem installing this kind of stuff. I had a few problems in the past restoring some system stuff and it made things not work, a lot of force closes. etc.. I would open up say the sound settings in settings and it would never open it would fc 100% of the time. You know I bet a lot of the issues people have with stuff not working when other's have no problems are due to bad restores. I have not once in any of the builds(since 26 when I started flashing CM 7) had an issue with wifi or gps(knock on wood)

But the market automatically downloads all your apps for you. last time i did a full wipe i only used TB to restore data only, since the apps had been installed automatically from market.
You can use My Backup Pro to back up your SMS and MMS, plus bookmarks and a few other things. Very useful if you want to wipe and save your text.

You can also use My Backup Root (free in market) It is the same as My Backup pro but it is free.
Ok so I just barely rooted and flashed cm7 #40 to my glacier. Everthing is great. I love the rom. I just need help on 2 things. First, how do I get my contacts to sync back to my phone? I had done a factory reset twice before and they always synced back after I logged in my gmail account but not this time. I did sync my gmail before rooting and flashing and I also backed everything up with titanium backup but nothing. Second, when I first flashed the cm7 #40 rom I liked how when I locked the screen it shut off like if you were turning off a tv. I don't know what I did that it does not do it anymore. If anyone knows hows to fix my 2 problems I greatly appriciate it. Thanx.
EDIT: I figured out how to get the screen off animation back but I still have problems getting my contacts to push back to my phone. If anyone knows how to get them to sync it would be helpful.
EDIT#2: Figured out how to get contacts back. Was not able to sync them but just went to the tmo website, wrote them down and re-added them to my phone.

Did you install the GAPPS zip that came with the rom? if you didn't, do. Its the google apps file. That will load the market and apps.

wiped, re-flashed the rom and re-boot. it was the only way i was able to get the animation back.
I'm curious if there's a way to batch-restore data only in Titanium Backup? Only way I can see is to do it app by app.
Likewise, any way to batch-backup data only?
I searched the forum for something similar to no avail, so if I missed it, I apologize. So I had been running CM 6 stable for a month and everything was great. Hadn't upgraded kernels, or any other modifications. Turned my phone off for the night last night, and when it came back on, stuck in bootloop for no good reason why. So, oh well, I'll just flash a new ROM, no big deal, then tried CM7RC, it boots, I use titanium backup to restore everything, it all works well, until I reboot the phone again, and bam, right back to bootloop, but this time with CM7. I'm completely out of ideas, any help would be appreciated. I've wiped davlik, cache, did factory reset, everything I can think of.
Thanks ahead of time.
Try fixing permissions in recovery, if that fails then try wiping ALL data and installing CM again. If that doesn't work, try a Sense ROM, it might be an AOSP problem
so here's an update to my problem so far. What I had left out earlier was that I could install a new ROM, and I could reboot my phone and it would work fine. Not until I used Titanium Backup and restored all of my apps and settings did I run into a problem. With that said, I did as PGleo86 said. This time, it worked just as it had before. Phone was fine, until I restored data. So I thought about what I had installed last. So the last time I wiped everything and installed CM7, I used Titanium Backup, but this time I omitted a few programs and settings, namely, Amazon App Store and Angry Birds Rio. This time when I rebooted, it worked fine. So I am slowly going to restore the settings, apps, and data I omitted one at a time and reboot my phone to see if any of them put me into boot loop. Has anyone heard of anything like this before? Particularly with Amazon App Store or Angry Birds Rio? (I did recently upgrade my version of Swype as well)

From what I understand, its restoring the data that is killin it. You can restore all the apps you like, but when you start restoring data, it seriously screws with alot of roms. You will keep having the issue as long as your restoring data. Good luck dude
This may take a while but try reloading a few apps at a time to see which on in particular is causing the issue. I saw a post like this somewhere on this massive forum, but the person found out it was one app that was killing the boot process.
Different roms store data in different places. So titanium is writing data to somewhere it shouldn't be.
Hi, everyone; adding to the flood of questions...
I've been having some issues after a reboot lately:
- a couple of my apps will disappear. Namely Line Runner and the Merriam Webster Dictionary. I did some searching on this earlier and people who have had similar problems said it was due to the apps being installed on SD. I moved them to the phone, which seemed to solve the problem, but:
- rebooting also seems to make me lose my latest Google Search and Maps updates. The market will prompt me to update these. These apps are already on the phone, so no clue how to fix that one. But the most annoying thing is:
- after reboot, several of my game apps will force close when I try to open them. It seems like it's the more processor-intense ones: Pew Pew, Osmos, Anomaly, World of Goo. I thought maybe it was because of the undervolting/underclocking settings I have (from GideonX), but the apps work fine (running quite smoothly) after I install them, as long as I don't reboot. As soon as I reboot, if I try to open them again I get FC. If I uninstall then reinstall, they run fine again.
Any ideas? I'm running Juggernaut 4.1 with faux's 009u kernel and, as I said above, Gideon's script. I tried one reboot back to faux's stock clock/voltage settings, but I still got FCs on the apps. Granted, I didn't try it again or give it time to settle in or anything.
Any thoughts, folks? Thanks!
fix permissions? fresh wipe and install? clear cache? fiddle around
Ah, forgot to mention. Tried all of the above (fix permissions, clear cache, reflashed ROM, even recovered to my pre-custom ROM backup and reflashed from there).
I did some more testing on this, and I think I've narrowed down the problem. I flashed back to stock voltage/clock settings under faux's kernel, then reinstalled one of the apps I had issues with (Osmos). Upon reboot it still ran okay. So it seems I won't get force closes after reboot IF the app was installed under stock settings.
Does anyone know why undervolting and/or underclocking would cause apps to force close only after reboot?
EDIT:
Well, never mind. I did some more testing, and what I thought worked last time didn't work again. Must have just gotten lucky that time. Sigh.
Try wiping your phone with darksides super wipe and clean flash a rom. Check the md5 sums to make sure youre not installing a bad download
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Oh, wow, didn't even know about the existence of that tool. Will definitely give that a try when I have some free time this weekend. Hopefully I can report back with positive news.
Thanks!
Don't want to count my chickens, but using super wipe seems to have done the trick so far! Using super wipe before flashing Jugg 5.0 seems to have gotten rid of my problem of FC apps.
Thanks again!
I've used sultanxda's cm 13 rom since it's inception and only stayed there because of xposed. Since the official xposed was released, I decided to upgrade and have had nothing but problems.
To start with, I upgraded with TWRP by wiping (system/cache), flashing new fw by sultan, flashing the new sultanxda cm14 rom, flashed gapps, flashed magisk, wiped cache, and booted. After it booted it up, a lot of FC and apps staying on their splash window and closing.
So I tried RR and they fared well, but after a while it started doing the same. I could be not using my phone for a few hours, load whats app, and it would FC.
Backed up data (using TB), did a full wipe (system/data/cache), flashed fw, flashed rom, flashed gapp, magisk, xposed, and flashed the update.zip I created with TB. After boot and restore it did the same thing.
Thinking maybe it's the data, I did the above, but this time I didn't restore the data by TB's update.zip. I did a clean install, booted, waited for google play to restore by downloading all apps, then restored only the data using TB. This seemed to be having the best result and I used it all day with minor issues like whatsapp would not update until I launched it. So if people were sending me messages, I didn't know until I launched whatsapp.
Went to bed and woke up, same deal as the original problems. Lots of apps: Whatsapp, Web video broadcaster, whisper, signal, ring, sc, firetv app, and many more would either give FC or not launch. Only way I figured to fix it is restore the app only using TB.
I even tried reflashing the FW and Open beta FW again, but that did not help.
What is about my phone and nougat that's causing me to have these problems? I had no issue using MM with all of these apps. If they were not compatible, google would have not downloaded them after a clean install.
Anyone else having these issues or know what might be going on? I'm very tempted to go back to my MM backup and update the data for all apps if I cant fix this.

/using TB is known to brek google push messaging service. Alos when going from something that was on android m to android n, always do a clean flash (formatting both caches, system and data) When backing up, make sure to only back up and restore user data. Not a single piece of system info should ever be restored.

right, that's what I did this last time I reflashed everything. backed up all important apps, flashed everything, let google restore the apps, and restore only the data to the non-system apps.
would that have an effect of every other app though? I could not use web video caster even thought it was a fresh install, no restored data, because it would just FC.

The best thing you can do is grab matlog from the play store and run a logcat. The post it in the roms thread.
