best rom opinion - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is super subjective but im curious to see what the majority is....
right now im on virtuous 1.0.2 with the oc to 15xx.... but the last while my phone has been laggy as all can be, lots of programs such as sms and email etc is always freezing and crashing....
so since im switching up to sgs2 in a few days, wondering what ppl think is the best overall rom for our phones....
plan on giving this to my wife, so i want something with the least amount of bs, and great speed, fluid feeling, with good battery
Thanks all

Man there are couple of these already...

If by "couple" you mean "100,000" then yes.
OP, if you want a basic, stable ROM (aka not sense) you can check out an AOSP ROM like stock Gingerbread (I've used the one from Xboarder) or CM7.

Cm7 or sense

Ok so I have ran both I am currently running cm7 and I like it but I kinda still like sense so really irk what to choose as a daily drivervwhat do ya think?
sent from Cm7
I use CM7 as my daily, and I find it quite enjoyable. Sometimes I change the screen color just cuz I can.
I've tried both and enjoy sense more. It just seems more organized to me, but I've been using it since it was called touchflo3d on the HTC diamond.
Maybe I just don't like change, lol.
I really liked CM6 and 7 for the customization options but they were just buggie on my phone... maybe it was the kernels I used, maybe some random app or something but neither of them really had everything working correctly that I need/use...like sometimes GPS wouldnt work, sometimes it was the camera, both of which I use on a daily basis....
Sense on the other hand is much easier to find a ROM/kernel combo that allows everything to work as it should, with decent battery life... Has good UI IMO but lacks some of the customization options that CM had... I really couldnt tell an actual difference between the two types in terms of speed, although the "benchmark" tests always said there was a big difference
Just my opinion but I like Sense as a daily and then flash CM for a few days here and there, then nandroid back to my Sense....
I like CM7, but what you're really asking is whether Sense is better than ADW. Personally, I use LauncherPro Plus.

I'm currently running EViO with ADW.Launcher and I'm very pleased. It isn't as light as CM7, but seems very stable and the battery life (1.8) is nice.

Have you used any others? Fresh Evio Myns all run pretty fast with no bugs for me.
Personally for a daily driver i use "Sense". mainly because i have 4g in my area and use it. Once CM gets 4g bug free i will probably switch to CM.
I put sense in quotes because i remove everything i can from it including the rosie ui (i use launcherpro) and the htc widgets. Hate the rosie UI but like copy/paste and 4g.
Yea...I've used alot of roms since getting my htc....and I liked myns and caulkins...but mikfroyo with a netarchy kernel has had the best results for myself

I finally took the plunge and flashed MIUI this morning. I played with it for about 2 hours and and then nand restored MikfroYo 4.4 because i missed it.
I just couldn't see myself getting used to the iphone feel and the lack of wiimax really bummed me out. It was pretty fun having such a completely different feel though.

Most stable gingerbread

I have spent the past week trying out several gingerbread ROMs trying to find one that I'd stable enough for daily use. The most impressive one I used was ASC Bamboozled v1.1. It was super quick and had some cool animations like the TV animation when you turned it off. I would like something kinda of like that. I know that the gingerbread ROMs have a reboot issue and that doesn't bother me too much. It is a slight annoyance but not a deal breaker. With the source of gingerbread from Samsung floating around I was wondering if there were any stable ROMs yet.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
The animation is called CRT on and off I believe.

cm7 is the best. no reboots but it hasn't no 4g, which suxs.
I thought about cm7 but I heard there is a issue with voice calls and some of the standard things didn't work. Has that changed with the source? Nit worried about 4g seeing I don't live in a spot that has it. Yep throwing away $10 a month. I hate it.

Until the EXT4 kernel is released from source, find yourself a good stock RFS prerooted EH17 ROM to Odin and then Odin in mkasick's kernel from the new source. I don't think anyone put together a new ROM with the new kernel yet besides CM7. Or wait a few more days and I am sure there will be some.

Of all the GB roms, Thunderhawk has been the most stable for me.
Hands down acs ics. Its super stable and fast and its ics themed. cyanogen is also great if you don't mind losing 4g and video. Although battery on both roms are fantastic. I get about 18 hours average on acs and about 23 on cyanogen. And thats with a stock battery with moderate use. Ive been switching back and forth for a while now. But been running acs as my default rom. I havent had one problem with it at all. No reboots, lags, gps lock issues, or things of that sort.

Here's the thing about 'stability'. All the GB roms look wonderful out of the gate and perform flawlessly for 3-4 days and then start to disintegrate, act out, cause FCs and freezes. If you want serious stability, you need to use a Froyo rom. If you don't mind a few inconveniences, CM7 is the way to go. It is the most stable of the GB roms and many phone owners are very excited about its possiblities down the road. Honestly, I work in a hi-rise in San Francisco and I don't even miss the 4G, the phone is that fast. The battery life alone is worth the call sound and video issues which are minor at best. IMHO.
everyones phone is different
some people have issues with cm7 and acs ics, and some people dont. so best idea is test drive both roms, to see have your phone acts it them. and with the video issue there are other players in the both markets that can help with that. and with cm7 its just plug and play no extra steps to get it to work and with acs ics there other things you have to do to get it to rite.
ACS ICS seems to be pretty good so far. No major concerns to this point, albeit early stages of testing.

Don't you know not to invest in something for features it may have one day... that's what got us into trouble with the Epic 4G in the first place (6 month late Froyo, endlessly delayed Gingerbread, TV Out, FM radio...)!
Anyways, whenever someone asks "what's the best rom?", you'll always get very biased responses. You'll generally hear cries of "ACS!" and "Cyanogen!". While the acclaim is generally deserved, my own testing hasn't yet shown anything too fantastic in their current GB versions. ACS ICS has a somewhat glitchy launcher, but if you like it have at it. CM7 did not have anything special I could find, nor did it perform to my typical battery standards.
Try them all out, each has their own merits and each phone performs differently with different roms. Don't forget the others like Hurricane or Urban.
Or you can just follow the crowd .
When I came to XDA, I read the threads under each ROM to see what the features were and what problems people were having. People coming here now are too damn lazy to do this and want us to tell them exactly what to put on their phone. I would lke nobody to answer threads on "what's the best ROM" and maybe people will stop being lazy and read.
If everyone liked the same thing there would be only 1 rom. Read like kenny and random suggested. Find the one with the most features that you personally need or want. I try just about every rom on here and always find my way back to thunderhawk. It just has the best mix of all the features I need working.

POLL: What is your favorite rom thus far

Just wondering what everyone else likes for a rom. Feel free to tell us your likes or dislikes with your current rom. With the choices we have available to us on this device, I'm sure some are wondering which rom is right for them.... this poll should give people some kind of direction.
EDIT: I must apologize. I must of been tired to miss putting viperROM on the poll list. Don't suppose there is a way to edit that poll is there?
I'm loving Starburst and glad I finally budged out of my curmudgeonly ways off of stock as I wait for CM. It's very full featured and allows tweaking without turning into a theme-fest. I was very surprised with it.
Though I am also preparing my phone to try out some other ROMs today....I'm a big fan of Calkulins work so I'm pretty eager to try that out.
Calkulin FTW
Although to be fair I haven't tried starburst yet. Didnt boot when I tried it but it was my first attempt at a custom ROM on this phone so I am sure I did something wrong

To be honest, and maybe this means I'm a ****, but when I read about people having all kinds of problems with a rom or a kernel or a mod or anything my first thought is automatically "they probably fncked something up."
A vast majority of the times this is, in fact, the problem. I'm on my 8th? 9th? Android device. I hack 'em up to pieces. I try to be a good boy and read everything thoroughly...but I don't. I skim for the important bits. If I screw something up it's usually pretty obvious, then I fix it, then it works. I have never actually had a ROM that has destroyed my battery life (I have with experimental kernels, but, to be expected), I have never lost 3G function, I have never gotten unfixable bootloops, I have never killed my wifi or 4G to where a full wipe and reflash didn't bring it back...never. For years now I have been hearing some wild problems from people and never actually experienced any of them for myself in a way that wasn't fixable, by myself.
I have gotten better battery life, faster internet, working youtube, faster wifi (the 'wifi n' mod on Evo4G), etc etc etc.
I don't know, I'm always skeptical of people claiming a rom or kernel are screwing things up when there are other people with no problems at all.
Alpha and Beta roms notwithstanding, lol
viper for some reason not on here..
but anyway, my vote is for viper. Need to try Calkulin more though
yeah.. where's viper? I think the rom is quiet good.. and nobody 's seems to complain much on his thread..

[Q] New guys to android couple of questions...maybe more

Hi...some questions about roms. There seems to be 3 main/best/popular roms for and E4GT. Starburst, Blazer and Calkulin...if I'm wrong tell me please.
1.) I have not found a way to really tell them apart especially as a new guy. What are the major differences.
2.) If I'm not gaming and simply am looking for best user experience speed which one is the best. I know quadrant tests don't really tell the whole story.
3.) I have CyanogenMod on my Touchpad and really like the customization on it like setting up what volume based on time. Does any one of these offer that option or additional options. I noticed that Blazer has CyanogenMod Libs I don't know what that is but that maybe what i'm looking for.
Thanks for the help.
Honestly the best thing to do us flash them and see what one you like the best. That is part of the joy of android.
I have tried both of phantoms ROMs and I like Blazers the best. Naerok one is awesome too.
Once we get cm on this phone we will see a lot more options in my opinion.
Hope that helps!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
To be honest, all the Roms are fast and none will show any lag because the device itself is that good. You will not be able to notice any one Rom opening an app quicker then another. They will all lay games just as equal.
Right now I am using Calk's rom but it doesn't mean one is better then the other. I also believe Viper is working on an updated Rom based on his twitter post yesterday.

Are there any ROMs that actually work

Are there any stable e4gt roms that are better than stock ek02 with everything working cuz battery life is a poor trade off for working features in my opinion. Example if wimax is not working or tether to get more battery life whats the point

I am also not sure how to approach this. There are only a few roms that don't support wimax.. I suggest calkulins. It's my go to rom. I've heard starburst is pretty good too.. But in the future, please try to read a bit. maybe look at the roms that have a lot of view and/or comments. The OP of each thread will tell you just about everything you need to know.
IMO, there is no more stable custom ROM right now then UnNamed. If I wasn't so flash happy, I would stay with that but I'm changing ROMs every 2-3 days now...
But anyway, yeah UnNamed is the best ROM as far as stability is concerned.
Oh and I got over a day of moderate use from it. Don't believe me though, try it out!

MJHawaii is right.. UnNamed is a hell of a rom especially with a few tweaks added in. I am quite sure you will not find anyone unhappy with it. Also like mentioned before there is a whole development section of great roms. Just make sure when you try them all you do not restore data and flash all of them cleanly and not on top of each other.
For battery life on this phone may I recommend 200-800 since your phone can clearly handle it...
no offence, but either dont flash and stay on stock or there is always the good ol flip phones!

blazer is my daily driver.
i have not tried a single rom that has just flat out been unstable or unusable though; i steer clear of early/experimental builds, bust most of the roms in the dev section for this phone are pretty complete and comprehensive.
this is my first android device and initially i had trouble just rooting the thing, but thanks to xda's dev section my first flash was a piece of cake and i've had no issues or major complaints in 3 months of jumping rom to rom.
Just an observation. But your avatar shows you have at&t, shouldn't you be in a different section? This forum is for the Samsung epic 4g touch. Maybe thats why the roms aren't working. Unless you just havent updated your profile. (Im guilty of that as well)
