I'm still new to both the boards and my HTC Evo 4G.
I've read a hundred times over that we still can't root GingerBread, nor can we roll it back to 2.2.
So to keep busy, i'm reading as much as i can and googling all over and came across an older app called DMUpdater.
Reportedly this app did let you roll back from 2.2 to 2.1, but not for the HTC Evo. So do you think it can be done on the Evo as well? Or completely SOL with S-On?
EDIT: As I keep reading, I don't think it will work, but maybe some one out there will find a way someday!

Hi, well over the past week I have noticed a bump or some sort of spot on the bottom of my evo. I have root and all that good stuff but it is really annoying and I want to take it to the store.
Does anyone one know what is the best way to take the phone back?
I mean I know I have to flash the ruu but I don't want the Sprint people to update the phone to 2.2 since I want root.
Thanks

There are plenty of threads detailing how to unroot and go back to stock. Find them.
As for keeping 2.1, if you have to exchange your phone you're going to be waiting for the luck of the draw. Some stores have older phones in stock with 2.1, but new ones are shipping with 2.2, so the longer you wait the worse your chances of finding a new 2.1. If they are able to service it, just tell them not to update the phone as you're concerned that the new update is not stable and you have seen several reports of decreased performance. They can't FORCE you to take it. Just make it clear when you hand the phone over, maybe even get them to sign a note.
There's sure to be a 2.2 rooting method soon enough, though, so you won't be out in the cold forever. Or, failing that, a way to root Gingerbread. . . .
Yes don't worry they will release root for 2.2 very soon
Okay, I had to make an insurance claim on my EVO and I'm getting it tomorrow, what to do you guys think my odds are of getting a new Evo with stock 2.2 froyo already pre-loaded??!!??!
I really am hoping it still has 2.1 than I cant still root it and not have to loose root if I get stuck with stock 2.2... ugh!!!!
So what do you think what are my odds?
(A) HTC Evo Pre-load with stock 2.1?
or
(B) HTC Evo Pre-loaded with stock Froyo 2.2?

I think by now they are coming with 2.2 unfortunately. However, always a chance.

Not good...
Unless the the tech who put your refurbed EVO together was lazy I am pretty positive most if not all EVO's are coming with 2.2. Of course there is the chance.
Whenever someone comes into my local Sprint Store wanting WiFi Hotspot (root) and whatever else, the manager sends em my # to root their phone. I was getting a lot of calls until the past week. I think 2.1 is drying out fast.
I rooted a ladies phone this morning. She bought the phone on launch but had thought the update process would take too long so she kept pressing cancel. Then she decided she wanted root and called me. She was just lucky I guess.
But all the calls I get lately go something like "I just got a EVO with 2.2 can you root it for me?" Its getting old.
Whoever comes up with a 2.2 root is going to get a nice fat donation from me.
well my faith isnt very high lol, but I will say about a month or so a go a friend of mine got his HTC hero replaced thru Sprint care insurance that some of us pay $7 a month for, and we got the Hero with Android 1.5!! which I was a bit shocked about....
I think you have a 50/50 chance right now. I was talking to a tech at a Sprint Repair Store and he said all of the refurb'ed EVO's he has received have 2.1, they are told to do the OTA to 2.2 before giving it to a customer.
He said all the new EVO's are coming to him with 2.2 on already.
Since you are getting it from Assurion, who really knows if you'll get a new one or a refurb'ed.
ugh!!! 2.2 preinstalled

That sucks dude
so is it just not physically possible yet, to downgrade to 2.1 or does sprint know of a way and there not telling us?
For those of you that don't like searching for answers here is the latest on the 2.3 root method for the EVO 4g.
Yesterday - July 6, 2011
[Q] When asked about the status of the 2.3 root for the EVO 4g
xhausx says :
Still no word on a new Gingerbread exploit. They found a way to get temp root with the Evo 3D and Sensation but unfortunately it doesn't work on Evo4G.
Sorry to everyone who has emailed me and I haven't been able to reply to. Ive been getting swamped for a few things lately and, although it says to email me for the update, there is still nothing I can do atm. I have something new I want to try when I am able to but for the moment our best bet is having HTC do it themselves.
[Q] Also when asked if the EVO 4g was locked down like the EVO3D was ?
xhausx then goes on to say:
ohhh no, not even close lol
One of the unrevoked guys was saying the Evo 3D and Sensation are locked down on a level they've never seen before.
The whole convo/thread can be found below.

Thanks.
We should be getting a root method soon enough. After all, it's been over a month!
For those who like rumors - There's an interesting one making the rounds about a possible upcoming 2.3.4 patch from Sprint for evo4g/3d for google voice/video which will include an unlocked bootloader.
This was recently tweeted by @agrabren and was being discussed on http://www.facebook.com/pages/S-Off-for-Sensation-and-Evo-3d-NOW/117107248377328

If/when a new rooting method comes along for the most recent Evo update will it be applicable to the Japanese Evo? The JP EVO's come stock with 2.2 and hboot 2.15 if that matters.
I've been reading through the posts that are going around about the phone and know that there are some people really wanting the root but not so many (publicly) saying that a dev is working on it and HTC doesn't seem very reliable for unlocking phones.
OKay for weeks now i have been searching ways to Root my HTC EVO I have been looking and looking maybe i am confused so now i see great methods to root the files are no good such as ginger breaks and other ways such you tube videos but unable to find a video who do play by play how to do a easy successful root method now i am currently S-on my Hboot is 2.15 and build number is 4.24 now i know unrevoked is not working since the update make a long story short if anybody has some of a method please reply in a nice way and don't bash me because i may not know this phone stuffed by i am geek in computers so we all have good things what we do best.
Put simply, 2.3 hasn't been rooted yet, they're making progress but you're out of luck for the moment.
Still no method yet, waiting impatiently, check the forums multiple time daily. I'm sure there will be an announcement when it available, so just keep your eyes peeled. Just rooted my wifes evo because she never accepted the OTA, now I'm drooling in jealousy.
That hurt my head

Well I have my HTC evo 4g fully rooted with unrevoked. What I did is I broke my phone and I'm under the black tie program with sprint. I called asurion to get my NEW AND UNUSED PHONE. They asked if I would rather it come fully activated. Or would I rather activate it myself. I told them I'd rather activate it myself. I paid the 100 dollar deposit and while Isaac activating my phone I stopped the firmware and software update. It only comes on the phone as an ota if you activate yourself. If they activation it you will be stuck where you are. After stopping the firmware update I was sitting at stock android 2.2 aka froyobwith hboot 2.10. If you're willing to spend 100 bucks to do this, it will come a lot faster than the HTC bootloader update or the developers hacking methods. No offense to the development team. You Guy do an amazing job. But yea, that's the way I did it. Then I rooted with unrevoked and am currently running cm7 and am extremely happy with improved battery life along many other things. Maybe this will help you

I agree with this. NEVER EVER EVER EVER LET SPRINT activate a phone. DON'T EVEN LET THOSE ASSHOLES TOUCH IT! Biggest mistake you can EVER EVER make! spread this around. :-D However!, I find it hard to believe on the "I called asurion to get my NEW AND UNUSED PHONE."
It might not be unused but it definitely came in mint condition with the froyo firmware on it so that's all I needed lol as of right now if you're willing to spend the 100 bucks its well worth it in my opinion. Good luck getting root guys ill see if I can't find a way to help the devs and the others working in the collaboration in the development section.

That is not necessarily true. My evo was destroyed in a car accident. Asurion sent me my replacement. I was hoping it would be 2.2 and denied their request to activate my phone. When the new phone arrived, it had already been loaded with 2.3.3. I didn’t even bother to activate it and ended up going back to my rooted hero for the time being. Getting a replacement phone is a crapshoot. There are multiple posts on XDA giving anecdotal reports of replacement phones. Most are shipping with gingerbread. Some still will have froyo. Some (very few) will come with S-off. Don’t assume that by breaking your phone and dropping $100 you will automatically be shipped a phone capable of being unlocked at present time.

It really depends on if the phone was made before the ota release date and whatnot. You cn request that it come with 2.2 instead of gb. This method may not work for everyone but I know that it has worked for the friends I have around my area. They saw what happened and wanted to try it and its worked for them. If you feel that its a longshot at getting the right phone
Then by all means stick with what you've got. I just was willing to try anything to get rid of gb. But now I'm running cm7 with a tiamat kernel and am very happy. Little side note: I actually didn't break my phone on purpose.

I see your method and point so I am in KCMO AKA Kansas City MO doing some research online and from Best Buy they have an HTC EVO for 99.99 in white Android 2.2 and even called them to confirmed but doing some thinking and playing around on the Android Market SPB 3D its Awesome since I cant root my phone but I pay the 14.95 that way my phone is not harm and I have my warranty still but i am sticking with SPB 3D
They just came out with the revolutionary root for gingerbread. Look in the android dev section and you'll find it. It works too. I rooted a friends phone using that method and he had absolutely no issues with his phone. Even though my usb cord had a short in it there was no problem with it that made it brick even though it disconnected multiple times. Id have to say that it is a very safe root method. So check it out if you're still interested in root
