[Q] Can't install any custom rom on Telus Desire - Desire General

I'm having trouble installing any roms on my girlfriends desire. Installing roms seems to work fine, right up until i try to boot the phone, it just gets stuck at the HTC screen, I've pulled the battery and tried again, but nothing works. I've tried multiple roms, and with every one, the same problem.
The phone is rooted, HBOOT 0.93.0001, S-ON, Baseband 32.54.00.32U_5.14.05.17
Anyone know what's going on? It's been a while since I've played with android phones, so I'm not current with all the lingo. I'm currently a WP7 user
Thanks for the help!

I'm assuming then it would be a2sd Rom?? Your ext3 or 4 setup? ROM manager sucks for this, use gparted or minitools(I've never used this one) and preferably a card reader.
Sent from my HTC Desire

Ya, I tried ROM manager for the partition, I'll give gparted a shot. thanks!

Ok, formatted the sd card, and repartitioned to FAT32, and 512mb of EXT3 and the same thing happens, it just hangs at the HTC screen after installing a rom.

How long are you giving it before pulling the battery? It can take 10 or 15 minutes on first boot. I'm assuming you've tried a couple of different roms.

yes, I have tried a few different ones. I'd say the longest I waited was around 25-30 minutes. In my previous experience flashing hero roms, the most I had ever had to wait for those was about 5 minutes, so I assumed the 30 minutes was long enough, and decided that nothing was going to happen.

i'm a previous hero owner, same thing happend to me, desire is different.
on all desire roms the op will tell you what hboot is made for and then to flash the alignement zip even if your sdcard is partioned , you have to otherwise the will never bootup and then you flash the rom plus whatever updates they suggest .
i think your hboot is stock, same as mine, but you need to S-off your phone in order to flash any roms, follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
try cool sensation or what ever takes your fancy
1-download the alignement zip , the rom and the updates if there are any
2- put all of them on your sd card (mount it or use usb card adapter)
3- go to recovery and flash them in sequence, usually alignement zip first + the rom and then reboot should be about 5 to 10mn any longer you in a bootloop means something wrong.
just have a good read before flashing any rom , and follow what they say.from step 1 till the end.
you'll get there, don't worry it wont brick your phone

I was under the impression that S-Off wasn't necessary for all roms, for example insert coin cm7. I could not get my computer to successfully boot from my flashdrive to perform the s-off with alpharev, so I skipped that step
I also flashed the alignment zip, and still had the same problem.

You don't need s-off to flash roms, I'm not and flashed many. Make sure your installing roms for the stock hboot, cm7 won't work. From what I've seen unless your having problems with your ext the alignment patches can be more trouble than good.

Thanks a lot! I found a rom that works with the stock hboot, and it worked perfectly!

What rom are you using with the stock hboot? I'm having same problem.
Also I'm assuming cm7 is cyanogenmod7, i thought it worked with the stock hboot?

Ok, so I'm having another issue now... The market is not working, I tap it, and it brings up a white loading screen for about half a second then disappears. I tried a reset, and I still have the same problem. Is there something I need to flash in order for it to work? The rom I'm on is cool sensation v6, and I didn't see anything there about anyone having market issues, so I'm not sure what the problem is.
Thanks again
EDIT: I notice that under accounts and sync, it says that sync is currently experiencing problems
EDIT EDIT: I just remembered that with my old hero, I had to first sync over 3g only, tried that, and it solved my problem.

Under Applications, find the market and try clearing the cache

It's a bit misleading, cm7 does not refer to cyanogenmod7 but cm7 partion table.
You will usually find 2 different versions of most popular ROMs.
1. A2sd
apps2sd, usually A2sd+. This requires the stock partion table. You do not need to be S-off to flash these ROMs
2. CM7
This refers to the CM7 partion table (custom Hboot). To repartion your nand you need to be S-off. These ROMs are data++ ROMs.
So, no you do not need to be S-off to flash custom ROMs, you do need to be S-off to resize your partion tables. More info in this thread:
This explains Data++ versus A2SD very well:

[Q] No sense rom works correctly

I rooted my Desire (SLCD; Unrevoked 3) and it seems to be ok. Non-sense ROMs (and stock rom) are working correctly - no problems. But sense ROMs hang my desire. I have to reset phone. Any ideas to fix it?
sorry for my english, I tried to write correctly
I've tried some sense ROM (2.1, 3.0, and mix), and for me too, the phone become laggy.
Actually I'm testing the gingerburst ROM (GB+sense 2.1) witch uses Data2SD to increase memory.
working perfectly - very smooth

When you say it hangs your Desire do you mean on boot or when you get to the homescreen/lockscreen?
(The english is ok by the way)
It hangs when it gets lockscreen. I wait about 10 minutes. On non-sense roms (cyanogenmod, aosp) and stock rom there are no problems. But I bought desire only for sense (especially for Sense 3.0)
@black3yed
I have never used data2sd, I will try that ROM.
Make sure you download correct version of the rom and configure your sd card correctly.

I have an unbranded original AMOLED Desire on Froyo.
Unrevoked 3 and AlphaRev S-OFF went fine. Took a nandroid backup.
I thought bravo_alphaspl-sense.img was supposed to allow the use of the original stock ROM, but installing it and restoring the backup makes the phone hang at "WHY SO SERIOUS?". After restoring the original partition table and reloading the nandroid backup it now seems fine again.
Is there no way to use the patched HBOOT partition tables with the stock Froyo ROM?
Any suggestions? I tried the IRC but no-one answered, but I'm a total IRC noob so I might have been doing it wrong.

With a nandroid backup, you make a complete image of the phone's state. This includes all partitions on the phone (/data, /system, /cache) and maybe on the sd card (sd-ext).
The sense partition table and the stock partition have different partition sizes for /system and /data. Important here is the /system partition. Stock roms (or better all sense roms) use not less then around 200 mb of the /system partition. All different partition tables than the stock one have a maximal size of 180 mb /system partition.
So if you restore a backup from a stock rom using a different partition table than the stock one, you want to move 200 mb to a place that has only max 180 mb free. That's why you get stuck at the alpharev splash screen.
The exceptions of this explanation are the sense roms here, from which mostly two different versions exist: One for stock hboot, one fore cm7 hboot. But this exception is not the case here.
Conclusion: When you use a stock rom, you cannot use any other partition table than the stock one. Unless, you do some modifications (see the post below).

No it's not, you either:
1. Trying to flash a ROM for non stock hboot (you need S-OFF and custom Hboot for this)
2. Didnt partitioned you SD Card with ext partition (or did it wrong)

all roms work fine except the ones WITH sense. Every one hangs at boot screen.
(the screen where it shows HTC originally i believe) just before the lock screen appears.
now i see i MUST partition my SD card (EXT3/EXT4) in order to use roms with sense ?
Yes.. I believe most ROMs require an EXT Partition on your sdcard. Can use gparted or minitool to partition it.
Another point to note is that sense 3 ROMs sometimes take AGES on first boot... sometimes it's a good idea to just leave it.. go do something, watch some tv.. go to the crapper, watch some more tv.. and then find it booted

[Q] Need help w/ Runnymede AIO install

This is my first post, otherwise I would have posted in the Runnymede AIO dev forum. It actually is two parts.
1. I have searched many threads and still can't find a fix for my problem. I tried to install Runnymede AIO four times yesterday. My phone is S-off, rooted, etc. I have what the installer says is a stock HBOOT, but it has the "Revolutionary" banner on the bootloader screen. Every time I installed and rebooted it would hang on the white "HTC" screen. I wiped the phone every time I reinstalled as well. I have the EXT4 Recovery. I tried the reboot into recovery, then reboot from there trick, and it still got stuck. I really want to use this ROM, but I can't get it to install correctly. Anybody have any suggestions?
2. I tried to change by HBOOT from the Revolutionary HBOOT to the CM7/r2 HBOOT from AlphaRev using Fastboot Commander yesterday. When I did that, it soft bricked my phone so I couldn't see the screen (I am assuming I have a SCLED model). I finally got it fixed and ended up finally just restoring my Nandroid backup. Do I need to use the downgrader before trying to flash a new HBOOT, or would something else cause that?
Well, I found the superb troubleshooting guide from bortak (and thanked as well!) and tried flashing CyanogenMod. It went without a hitch. I tried Runnymede AIO again. Stuck on boot. So, I thought I would try Runny Rom. Same thing. Why would it be that I can get CM to flash but not a Sense ROM?

have you tried post#4 from Runnymede AIO thread, the detailed FAQ and installation guides in PDF format?
my immediate guess it that you don't have an ext partition set up on sd card, as i don't think you've mentioned one. CM does not require one to boot, but Runnymede AIO does.
well done for solving one of the problems yourself, many ppl can't find that troubleshooting guide for some reason...

For the Runnymede AIO install, I followed the 4EXT Recovery and Runnymede AIO installation sheets to the T. I did every step that was shown in them, including making a 1024mb EXT4 partition on the SD card, which showed when I checked the partition tables. I did a complete install from those sheets at least twice and it still would not move past the white screen. I let it set for 1 1/2 hours and it didn't move on.
For the HBOOT flashes I used Fastboot Commander as well as tried flashing from fastboot in the SDK. I was wanting to flash the CM7/r2 HBOOT so I could get the AD2SDX function.
My guess would be the ext partition of the sd card is acting up. When you format it using 4ext recovery did you pick the option to save your fat32 partition? If that was the case, backup your sd card contents to a computer and use 4ext to format the entire card this time including the fat32 partition. Pnce complete put your files back in the card and flash again.

The first time I formatted and flashed, I backed up to the computer, formatted the entire sd card, and transferred everything back. After that I have done it both ways when trying to flash again, with the same result.
I don't know if this makes a difference or not, but I thought I'd throw out there that I have a CDMA Desire (US Cellular).
After digging around, I think I have found that the CDMA is most likely what my issue is. I found this post ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1476469 ) that says Runnymede AIO is GSM. If that's what the problem is, that really stinks because that ROM looks awesome! I don't remember the threads about the ROM saying if it was compatible with CDMA or not (in fact I only remember one mentioning it with a patch, and I've read that the patches don't even work). So, is there a list or something that I've missed that tells what works with CDMA?

Ahh, yes, you'll often find such minor details left out of your OP to be the ones that are the biggest problem.
Sorry, you cannot use Runnymede with CDMA. There are actually only a very few ROMs made for CDMA devices, but if you search "CDMA" in the Dev section, you will definitely find something you can use.
PS, you may like to know that yes, Runnymede is an awesome ROM!!
Well, I installed Cool3d Runny v7 last night in CDMA mode. Still ended up stuck on the white screen. Guess I'll try Runnymede007 with the patch next...
Did you full wipe before install??
Also, occasionally, you might get a bad download, so might be worth dl'ing again, just to be sure...
Yep, did full wipe. I forget what the error was it showed. I'll try dl'ing it again. I just finished trying to work with RunnymedeMod007. I can't get the script edited for the CDMA patch. Needless to say, I am getting very frustrated.
unfortunately I've found that some of the CDMA patches don't work like they say they do
(in fact I've found one and that was the ics bcm)
make sure you have the right partition sizes that they want for the rom to work
use cMTD to change partition sizes:
http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/23984-guide-to-installing-cmtd/
DONT USE ANOTHER HBOOT
if that didn't work check with the dev and see if the patch actually includes a bravoc kernel. if not it has a very very slim chance of working
if it doesn't work after that i have no answers
if resolved and working please post what you did so others may do the same
I'll see what I can do. For RunnymedeMod007 it says to delete a line from the script. I unzip the file, edit in Wordpad, zip the file, and save to SD. When I try to run it ai get an error. The zip has a root folder inside of it. Any idea what I'm doing wrong, or how else to edit the wcript and see if the patch works?
Edit script with Notepad++
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio using XDA Premium App
Tried using Notepad++ to edit and it took out the script, but I can't get it to save back into the zip file. Tried zipping the entire file and ended up with the "file-in-file" problem again.
Ok, I redownloaded RunnymedeMod007, verified the MD5, unzipped it, edited out the line as he said to do, zipped the file, signed it with AndroidSigner, moved to SD, and, it failed. Whenever I zip the file, it makes the "Runnymede etc" zip file, then if I open it, there is another file inside with the same name, and if i open it, then all the info is there. I can't get it to zip without that extra folder inside, and I think that's the problem with this installation.
Also, I tried downloading Cool 3D Runny and doing a CDMA install with it again. I got it installed, but it hung at the white HTC screen again. I gave up after it was that way for an hour and did a battery pull.
The HBOOT partitions are all set to stock sizes, EXT4 partition set at 1024mb and aligned.

Won't boot, freezes at Droid iris

Dinc won't boot. It was working fine then just froze, powered down, restarted but with reduced battery percentage. After a few more moments rebooted and now freezes after informing me it's a "droid" and the rotating red eye comes on.
Trouble shooting steps and order performed: result
Booted into hboot and tried factory reset and clear : No change
Tried flashing Gingerbread .zip file via hboot. Formatted SD card to Fat32, booted into hboot, it recognized the file and asked if I wanted to continue, I select yes and it seems to install. Asks for reboot, then freezes.
Tried same process as above but with froyo file, same issue.
Tried reinstalling .92 hboot. It seemed to take, but no change.
Tried installed GB again on reflashed hboot: No change.
Flashed 1.02 hboot. Now it boots to saying "droid" and shuts off. I think it's done for, but I'm realllllly hoping someone can think of something else that may take care of the problem.
Are you s-off or hboot unlocked? If you are can you flash and access recovery still? If so go to recovery, wipe everything in mounts and storrage menu except sdcard and emmc and then flash a rom and see if it works. If it dosent it sounds like some kind of hardware failure. If your not s-off or unlocked i would unlock hboot with htcdev site, fastboot flash recovery, and then try as i stated earlier with wiping in recovery and flashing a rom.
Sigh....I was able to install recovery through your method. Really straight forward. I'm able to get into cwm and able to install rOMS. I tried three different ones. Two ics and ruby the aosp ROM (froyo). I chose the ruby ROM so I could also install a different kernel to see if that would work as well. Before every ROM install I wiped/formatted everything. Same as with the kernel.
I have a different radio to flash as well, will try that later.
But each time it does the same thing. Freezes during boot. On the stock plus ics ROM itfroze at the same point as on the base ROM...at the Droid iris.
So it looks to be a hardware problem. Could I possibly partition the internal sd if that is the problem. What about turning off the radio all together? I don't need it on, as the phone will be used as a more player only. I saw a post about scripts to disable the radio, could I bake that into the ROM before installing it?

It may be possible to bake it into a rom. You would have to open the script and ser what exactly it is changing, and then see if you can change it in the rom zip. But if i remember correctly the script actually executes a system file in the /system/bin folder called radioptions with a command line option of 1 or something. You may be able to edit the radio file in /system/bin, but im not sure i will look in to it some.
Edit: The radioptions file is actually an ELF file, it is probably possible to edit it with some special pc software, but i have no clue how. Most of the text in the file is a bunch of giberish and weird characters.
Bumb!!! reply hoping someone notices this with a solution! I really need to get my phone back up and running.

[Q] Serious (BIG) problem with DHD. No GUI, can't even finish setup.

So 2 days ago a friend bought an HTC Desire HD. It was working fine, but since it was second hand he wanted to hard reset it, and so he did. After he did that it started doing what I am showing in the video below(but it was with an older version, gingerbread I think). It was also going in CWM 10 sec after it was put into a charger. After I tried installing custom roms and roots, I installed what is said to be a stock ruu:
RUU_Ace_Sense30_S_HTC_WWE_3.12.405.1_Radio_12.65.60.29_26.14.04.28_M_release_225512_signed

It is obviously(visually) a newer version of the software the phone uses, than the one it had when he first gave the phone to me.
Nothing seems to have worked at this point, I'm desperate. After that 4th option of the setup(scheduled sync) it just goes black screen with a status bar and nothing. When he first gave it to me it used to display an error that said something like setup couldn't load, and with options to close it, wait for it, or tell HTC about it. It CAN receive SMS and calls, but there just isn't any GUI(menu, or whatever it's called).
I'm also providing a picture of the bootloader below.
I don't need the phone to be rooted or with any particular ROM or version, I just need it working normally.
Any help/assistance will be welcome! Thanks in advance

If you already have s-off and cwm, why not just flash rooted stock rom? It should work fine if the rom can be flashed successfully.
If it is not, it is most probably hardware issues, although i am not so sure myself.

Make a full wipe before flashing the Ruu. Flash a custom recovery in fastboot, do a full wipe, then flash a ROM (stock or custom) To see what happens
Already did all that. When I first got the phone I used the full wipe function of cwm(and of the stock recovery) a couple of times, but every time it was stuck at that point of the initial setup with the error showing up.
Is there a file SPECIFICALLY for the initial setup that I can flash to the phone, because I flashed different recoveries, roms, boots and even radios manually before installing the stock ruu. I haven't set up a phone before, so I'm not sure, but as I can see there are still 2 or 3 options left to select ,after that scheduled sync option, before the phone could run the main menu(gui or whatever).
Oh, and btw, when I updated it with that ruu, the setup visually changed and by that I figure out it gets flashed as part of the ruu, but still with the same problem. Can it be some kind of hardware problem of the internal memory? No matter how much I searched and where I looked I never found someone with a problem even close to this one.

Whatever I was doing to the phone it didn't usually have an sdcard in it and was booting without an sd card, tried with and without, no changes.
After I installed that sense ruu i can't seem to get back to gb, any ideas how to do it? I also can't get cwm to work now, even though it flashes without any error or problem I can only ge the htcdev root(already did) with this ruu, I think but I don't get any changes except that there is a watermark on the first line of bootloader.

So, like a half of a year ago I've got my Desire, second hand. Now I didn't want to be stuck forever on Android 2.2 and old Sense, so I decided to root and install a newer rom. Rooting and S-OFF were succesful after a bit messing around, but it worked. So, I've tried a lot of roms, but just a few of them seemed to work, Usually the ones, I didn't need. Right now I'm on the Touchwiz 5 JB rom, but it sometimes has a problem with the microphone. Else than that, it works nicely stable, many times more stable than the 2.3.3 RUU from HTC. But don't really like the interface, I'm a huge fan of Sense.
Now I didn't get any Sense rom to work, all the way from the 2.1 Sense roms to the newest 4.1 rom (where the number is the Sense version). I only got some plain roms to work, which I've used a little time, but they don't really satisfy me.
So, the tech information: rooted with Revolutionary, so the recovery is the ClockworkMod. The phone is also S-OFF, runs on HBOOT 6.93.1002, and currently runs on the Touchwiz 5 JB rom. I've tried almost all roms with Sense, exept for some new ones (4.0+) since they still have a lot problems with things I need to have.
So, I hope somebody is able to help me.
Looking right now, I haven't tried the latest Cooldroid Revolution yet, so I'll try that right now.
Tell us a little about your sd-ext partition.
I'm 99% certain you didn't create EXT partition on SD card, or you didn't do it correctly.
Use 4ext recovery to partition your SD (create 1GB ext4 partition and nothing else, rest will be FAT32 where you store your media etc.)
Reason why Touchwiz 5 JB worked for you, is that it doesn't require EXT partition to boot, since you have to activate a2sd script manually using terminal.
And without a2sd you will run out of space rather quickly.
Well, I indeed have no EXT partition, since I've tried that once, but resulted into a USB brick and malfunctioning SD-card. I will google it whenever I've tried this rom.
