[Q] A proper and secure phone holder - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would like to mount my phone to my ATV so I am looking for a smartphone holder. It musn't be a vaccum or bicycle type, because I want to mount the holder with two or four screws to the frame, so there are no doubts the phone and holder would fall off when riding on a more rough terrain..
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Why don't you look into Brodit or ProClip mounts? Hope this helps.

Thanks for your suggestion.
Active holder from Brodit should do the job, but it still isn't that secure. There is no additonal "limiter" from the left (or top if in landscape). Motorola has some excellent original holders, I wish something like that would exist for SE..

Brodit mounting question

I've already got a screen suction arm, and holder for the Wizard. These are connected together through the standard 4 prong connection method.
If I get just a Brodit active holder (http://www.gpsforless.co.uk/product_details.php?id=5839), will it connect straight onto the existing sucker via the 4 prongs, or will I need to get another screen sucker? This page (http://www.gpsforless.co.uk/product_details.php?id=5860) seems to imply yes, but looking at the Brodit on it's own, I'm not sure.
Thanks in advance.
I don't know which sucker you have, but the Brodit cradles come with a plastic swivel plate on the back with four holes, which are used to screw it to the mount. There are no prongs involved. Whether you could still screw the Brodit to your suction mount I couldn't say...
I've found the Brodit-specific car mounts to be excellent, and if you go to www.dsldevelopments.co.uk you'll get excellent help and advice.
The screen attachment you describe sounds like a Herbert Rickter product, the second link in your post is for an Artemis holder that is supplied with a HR screen mount. The normal Brodit powered holder you link in the first post will not connect to a HR mount, it needs a Brodit Pro clip specific to your vehicle.
I have tried coupling the Brodit holder to a HR mount and it simply doesn't work, there are addaptors for securing a HR holder to a Brodit Pro Clip but not the other way around AFAIK - Mike

Waiting for a ProClip Holder, Make your own!

I have been a longtime ProClip user, but I was tired of waiting for them to produce a holder. I really liked the OEM Verizon mount, so I bought one and found that it is quite easy to attach to a ProClip swivel mount (with move clip in my case). The Verizon mount is about $25-30, so it is actually cheaper than the ProClip part will be.
I did not take any "making of" pictures, but it is trivial to do it yourself. The back part of theh Verizon holder can be seperated from the front after removing four screws from the back. Then just drill two holes that match up with the swivel mount, find small screws to attach them, and reassemble the front of the Verizon mount.
I have several old holders that are useless, so I had parts around, and I really like the result. One downside is that you cannot access the center swivel mount screw to change the tension of the swivel wihout taking the whole thing apart, but I think I can live with it.

Nice work. I have considered doing exactly what you did. So does the phone enter a dock mode with that holder?
The phone does enter dock mode.

Nice! ProClip is second to none in quality and fit...but a few phone models later the price starts to add up. Personally I'm looking into either the tetax magnetic setup or the soundgate m2 to save some bucks.
Nice work for sure. If I stumble on a super cheap VW holder on eBay ill prolly do the same. Thanks for sharing.

MobileFun Universal phone vent holder

I've been looking for a decent holder for not only my car but my work van as well. Most vent holders suck...don't want multiple suction type holders attached to my windshield and the cig lighter/cup holder type holders just aren't my cup of tea. But then I stumbled upon this vent holder and it seems not only to have addressed the issues with most vent holders, flimsy clips, lack of stability and very little adjustability. Anyone tried it out? Strongly considering getting one....would help keep the phone cool since it's summertime here and I have the a/c going most of the time. See any potential problems with it's design?

Car dock that fits on 17mm ball mount (Garmin size ball mount)

I was wondering if anyone knows if any of the GS3 or universal car docks fit on a 17mm ball mount. This is the same size that some Garmin mounts use, and was also used with the T-Mobile G2X. I have a couple nice car mounts that I can use if I find a corresponding dock.

I saw that one, but I don't want to use a case. I will check how it works with the Nuvi mount I have just in case it does work.
Just use this adapter w/ the mount of your choice:

You probably could also use this one:

Now that is an interesting piece. I'll keep it in mind.
What I'm working with is I just recently bought another Pro-Clip set for my G2x and my new car. Since I have a G2x dock that fits on the 17mm ball mount I just bought another Nuvi mount from Pro-Clip. An adapter from the ball mount to something else will mean there's four pieces involved, and that's a bit much. I could return the new ball mount and get a GS3 mount from Pro-Clip but I'll have to eat the shipping on that.

I didn't see that Arkon mount the first time I read your post. I'm ordering one now, thanks. I think it'll work nicely.
I got my Arkon mount yesterday and tried it out. I used one set of the extended legs and it holds the phone quite tightly and it mounts perfectly to my Garmin mounts. Thanks for the recommendation vw671.

So does this part (I guess Arkon SM511 / IPM511) come with a 17mm socket ? which we can use with the garmin ball mounts ?
I understand you bought this part removed the clip and used it with your existing/old 17mm ball mount...

I'll see if I can describe this accurately, you do have to be a bit careful. It seems that Arkon mounts are sold as a combination of 3 main pieces. There's the black back with the grips, the phone dock, that's part of every mount, some come with extended grips and some might not. For the S3 you need at least one pair of extended grips.
The second part is a bracket that slides into slots on back of the phone mount and has a 17mm socket on it. The third part is whatever mount your car needs, suction cup mount, air vent, or various other options. That has a 17mm ball on it.
I have seen some Arkon mounts for sale that appear to not have the socket portion. I bought a full kit with the suction cup mount.
This one shows a good view of the parts. On the suction cup mount is the clip that attaches to the back of the phone dock, that is needed. That one doesn't appear to come with the extended grips, so I wouldn't buy that one, but it does give you an idea of the parts.
I believe some Arkon mounts, which still use the same phone dock, forgo the ball mount and instead use a mount that attaches directly to the back of the phone dock.

ProClip + Mountek Snap

I had been using the Mountek nGroove Snap for almost two years, but the thing they don't tell you in the product description is that the Mountek will compress and destroy the foam protector in your CD Player. When you take it out, your CD Player will look like a Hillbilly's smile.
I just bought a new car, and I didn't want that to happen again. I've always been interested in ProClip's offerings, since they are custom molded to fit your car, but the high price always put me off. For my car, I'd have to shell out 30 bucks for the custom mold and another 50 for the adjustable iOauto Pro Magnetic mount. Also, I couldn't find any posting anywhere that said that the iOauto Pro would hold the Nexus 5 securely without adding the included metal plate. I prefer my Nexus 5 naked.
My solution combines the Mountek nGroove and ProClip that more or less works perfectly with my Nexus 5 (I'll get to the drawback in a second)
Since I already had the nGroove, all I needed to buy was the Custom ProClip mount for my car ($30) and an AMPS ball adapter ($9.95), which I found on Amazon (search for iBOLT AMPS Adapter Plate).
The iBOLT comes with screws that are a little too big for the ProClip mount, so what I did was widen the holes on the ProClip with a power drill until they fit. Since both the iBOLT and ProClip use the AMPS standard, the holes lined up perfectly.
I'm happy with the finished product, although the ball on the iBOLT and the ball of the Mountek have a different texture. This made the Mountek piece sit a little too snug against the iBOLT ball. I'm thinking about sanding down the iBOLT ball until it can click into place.
Thanks for reading!
that looks awesome. id love to see some more pictures of it actually in the car. i might have just found my car clip!
Thanks for the setup. I was looking for a solution to this exactly. BTW you can take that yellow sticker off if you didnt know.
Thought that Proclip mount looked familiar. I have an XV Crosstrek and it looks like you either have an XV or impreza.
