[Q] External Charger for Galaxy Tab 10.1 - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Accessories

Any suggestions on an external battery? Woudl hate to buy battery with the wrong rating, have been using one for when I travel to charge my phone at least 3 times when away from a socket especially overseas

Needs to be able to supply 2A.
Tab will not charge unless it sees D+ and D- shorted together at about 1.24 volts (See the "make your own cables" thread and the "universal charging adapter" schematic)
I believe the Tab's internal battery is something like 6-7 AH. So the external battery will need to be a 8-9 AH Li-Ion to get one full tab charge (Charging isn't 100% efficient). That's around 4 18650s.

Don't have the expertise to make own cable, has anyone bought any external battery they can recommend?
I've used one for my phones for 3 years, I just change the cable and get 3 charges per full charge, a life saver for a frequent traveler

I think there's a universal charging adapter available from DealExtreme - I don't have the link, read through some of the other charger threads. Might try searching DX for "P1000"

I have a PhoneSuit Primo Power Core. It's a 7000mah battery that comes with charging adapters for several devices including the Tab. Works great.

Just got it from FRY'S for $99, love it, only beef, wish it used a standard USB wall charger , hate to have too many chargers

Does anyone know if energizer xp8000 would work fine with the tablet?

Can you clarify what you mean by "adapters ... including the Tab"?
I picked one up from Fry's and it works, but it requires me to use my Samsung cable that came with the tablet. I can trickle charge that way, and it does come with an adapter that provides the proper resistance to get the tab into "AC" charge mode, but there is no GT specific cable in the kit.
Is there another version that does come with a GT specific cable?
And does it need the resistance adapter?

Mine came with several adapters that works with various devices including my Tab. It had a USB cable with a round opening at the end and the adapters slide into the end of it. You might contact the company if yours didn't come with it..

Yes, mine came with that cable and a bunch of adapters including one that looked close but just wouldn't fit into the tab's slot so I assumed it was for iThings. I'll try it again and check the company's support site...

Samsung Batteries on EBAY (OEM vs. Generic)

Anybody have any experience with the Generic batteries on ebay going for about $5.00 each. Are these classing "you get what you paid for" or are the oem version just way over priced?
Please advise.
Update:
Purchased two batteries + charger (non-oem)... They last half as long as the Samsung OEM.
I bought 2 batteries + usb cable + charger + car charger for $8.99 (+$3.99 shipping) http://cgi.ebay.com/2x-Battery-USB-...863749?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f02cc0145
I knew they where not OEM or even not Samsung (like the picture). But they work fine. I have no complain.

@floppy - Does the car charger put out decent amperage? Or is it slow like USB? Also, the picture makes the battery charger look like a monster - is it as thick as it looks? Can the USB port be used to charge a phone while it is plugged into the wall?
thanks!
If you are looking for a decent car charger, get the Kensington PowerBolt K39224US . It puts out 2.1 amps and fits flush in you cig lighter...
if the wall charger is anything like a previous one i've owned, the dock charges the phone and/or a standalone battery... maybe at the same time, but probably sucks :\

Does the battery charger in this package come with its own AC power adapter or do I need to use my Captivate USB charger (or other) to charge the batteries? .

If you look at the additional pics on others and read the specs, you can see the AC prongs on the back of the charger.
you guys know if we already have review of that in the main SGS forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=733705
Also, if you read through the random shut-down thread, one of teh posts says Samsung is blaming the shut-downs on a charger/battery combination. It would be interesting to see if the aftermarket replacements cause such a problem or if its just a line of crap from Samsung.
I got 2 of the aftermarket batteries along with a charger and they seem fine.
not as good as OEM but do a great job as a backup.

I'm sorry I can't answer your first question because my car has an usb port and I don't use the car charger I received with the bundle.
About the size, it's not really bigger than the battery and yes you can charge your phone trhu the usb cable when in the same time your are charging a spare battery

Nope - the port shape doesn't mean anything. The factory charger has a female USB end and it charges faster then a PC USB port.
Keep in mind that all testing (even with an ammeter) shows that the max current the captivate will draw is about 700 mA. There is no reason for any charger that puts out more then 1 amp.
I bought the Griffin power bolt that has 2 1 Amp USB ports - so i can charge 2 devices at once. Also, most car chargers (with just the uSB port - no cable) need to have the data pins shorted or the phone will only draw 500 mA.
There are a couple threads in the Vibrant and i9000 forum that document all this. I modified an extra cable myself and now my phone sees my 1A car charger as an AC charger.
I just got these along with some other stuff.... the charger. The led is red when charging or when complete?
red when charging, blue when fully charged
Does anyone know if this kind of battery is gonna HURT your phone? I know that it might not last as long as the OEM one, that is fine. Just worry if this kind of battery can get over voltage some time that can be bad to your phone ... Anyone confirm about that? Thanks

Wall charger ...

Hi,
Can you use the wall charger from the Galaxy Tab 7" ?
Please if you have both devices to try it.
I would like to import this new 10.1" to Europe, The Netherlands.
And I am wondering the wall charger requirements.
Thanks.
I would also be interested to know if the charging cable is compatible between the original Galaxy Tab and the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Yes it works. I'm using my cable that came with my 10.1 to keep plugged into my PC and I'm currently charging my 10.1 on the cable that came with my 7. It went from 0 to 50% so far no problems. Not sure if it charges any faster/slower than the one that came with it but I'd assume they are the same.
Thanks, so I can order NL gt 7 charger for my US gt 10.1 for use here in NL.

Thanks for that. Picked up a couple of genuine Samsung chargers from Tesco in the UK for £4.97 each (reduced from something like £40!). Potential UK buyers might want to grab a spare while they can!
i think he was saying that the cable will work. The charger might not. I was trying to use my cable with other USB wall chargers but the device won't charge on them... my guess is because they are less than 2ah. I would make sure the specs on the tab 7 charger match up to the 10.1 charger to be safe
The Galaxy Tab charger I picked up today is rated at 2A so it should be OK, with any luck!
cable and charger both work. both chargers are 5v 2A. one reason why it charges slower than the xoom and tf.
on the upside it does trickle charge via standard usb. my tf won't and of course my ex xoom wouldn't.
Sweet, i'm gonna have to pick one of these up then
Wow, those chargers are expensive on amazon. Does anyone know where to get cheap ones?
Ebay is probably the best place for all things cheap, unless you're wanting a samsung branded charger
Haven't checked for the exact right one but dealextreme.com has been the best in the past for misc electronics cheap.
good to know that. like many android gadgets, once you have it, next natural thing is to put several chargers in several places.

I hate how you can't just plug it into any usb. I have usb adapters everywhere and it would be nice if I could charge it while plugged into my computer
I posted this in another thread, but with these adapters, you can charge off ANY USB port;

I also use a few third party cables designed for the original Galaxy Tab and they work fine. So happy to be able to charge my 10.1v anywhere

it does, but it seems like 1% per 3 min. just plug it in and see. it's the only honeycomb tablet that i've had that actually does charge via usb (xoom, tf, and gt101). the tf doesn't, but i'm sure it would if i had usb 3.0.

Seriously, why not buy one of the adapters that I posted about and use any charger you want? I think I paid about $7 Australian for two and now I can keep using all of the USB wall and car chargers I have amassed over the years owning Win Mobile and Android phones
If your heart is really set on buying a proper wall charger, if it says it will charge a Galaxy Tab (original) or iPad, it should charge the 10.1

[Q] Car charger recommendations

Hello. I'm trying to pick a car charger that would work with the galaxy nexus. from what I've read so far the samsung CAD300UBEB/STD model seems to do the trick but a few review says that the battery discharges faster than the charger can charge it back under heavy usage. can anybody confirm or deny this?
and also, I would like to know if that same charger would work for a galaxy S2. I'm looking for a charger than can be used with both models because I have both phones. the listing of models in amazon website doesn't list the nexus or the S2. so I want to make sure before buying it. thanks!
I'm also interested. I was just looking at this discussion on Reddit taht goes a little more in depth

The motorola charger listed there seems work well for the nexus and also for the S2 according to amazon reviews.
I went with one of these and a USB cable, and it seems to work just fine. Also gives me a spare USB port for additional charging.

I have the Motorola one already (the one with the blue LED) when I had my Droid 3, now it can't keep up with the Nexus' power drain. Just using it moderately on 3G only in the car today had it drain 3% over 40 minutes.

not according to this guy
I have a galaxy nexus cell phone which requires probably around 1.5 Amps when using GPS. The phone does not come with the car charger. It only comes with a 2A wall charger. My temporary solution has been to use a car power inverter that has house-type outlets on it (which I already had) so that I can use the wall charger in the car. This has been working fine, but for obvious reasons, is not my desired long-term solution.
Enter this piece of crap. Now, the phone and only requires a little over 1 A with GPS. With the real two amp wall charger, I am able to both run GPS and charge the battery pretty darn fast. But, with this charger, not only can I not use GPS without draining the battery, but even when not using anything special, the battery charging times are horrendous.
Stay far, far away.

Wow... granted, I am not using a GPS, but I never really checked the charge times. I don't rely on it for a fast full-charge.. usually just plug it in on the trip home and charge as much as it can until I plug it in at home.
Thanks for the heads up.. I am gonna have to keep an eye on it now.

I've researched this pretty thoroughly, and the key question is whether or not your GN shows "AC" when you check the Battery status, or if it shows "USB."
With most car chargers, it is seen as "USB" as if it's plugged into a computer, and will draw minimal current, generally not enough to keep up. I had 2 different chargers in my cars, none of which showed as "AC". I bought and then returned the Griffin PowerJolt Dual USB Micro Charger - it also showed as only "USB."
Finally, in one of the other Android forums I've been monitoring on this issue, somebody came across this one:
HTC T-Mobile myTouch 3G Car Charger
$3.12, free shipping. Mine came yesterday, plugged it in, and finally my GN showed charging as "AC".
Hope this helps!
When your smartphone shows your charger as ''USB'' this means that the USB data lines in the charger are not short-circuited. Then smartphone reduces its charging current to avoind any problems with USB laptop power sources
I made some experiments to check this point : see http://78michel.unblog.fr/?p=184.
I also opened a car charger and short-circuited the data lines on USB the plug . That way I have solved my previuos charging problem in my car during long trip.

i've used it now 4 times, twice on a trip from south florida to orlando.
It charges the phone just as fast, if not faster than my home charger. On the way back, my phone was at 35%, within 2 hours it was back up to 100%. No GPS and a couple phone calls.
on the way up, GPS on and it never dropped below 97%.
so i can tell you without any doubt what-so-ever that this charger works perfectly with the galaxy nexus and will charge it with Navigation and phone calls running.

I bought a charger very similar to this one and it works great in my car. I make sure any charger I get is rated 5V DC at 1000mAh at least.
I have 2 USB 2.5A dongle chargers, one by Belkin and the other by Kingston. Both register as charging via "USB mode" and do not provide sufficient power while the phone is in use(loses charge usually). I also have that Motorola Rapid charger but the way the cable is designed it tugs on the USB port and comes loose often. I ended up just using the normal USB cable that comes with the phone and a 140W power inverter. Granted, it's not the most compact of devices, but it works well. I got it from Walmart for $20. Here's a link to it:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Schumacher-XI14-Power-Inverter/15140199?findingMethod=rr
(and yes, using a power inverter will have the phone registering as "charging AC" and give a full proper charge.)

There was another thread, I think in the General that discussed all of this, what people came up with was the best combination if you want a dual port usb charger is to make sure you have a "charging only" USB cable. This cable will not make your phone think it is connected to a computer. You can tweek a data/charging cable to work but some people messed that up so it is probably worth just spending the $4 on a cable that works.
Here is my combination that works great. With this set up I can have on my navigation going with the screen on the whole time and stream Pandora over Bluetooth into my car and the battery still charges really quickly.
Dual USB Port with a 1 amp port and a 2.1 amp port (2.1 amp port is for tablets or power hungry devices - like the phone while navigating). http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0056VNVV8/ref=oh_o01_s00_i01_details
Charging Only USB cable:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003VYBCAY/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details
This combo has me as "Charging AC" whenever I am in the car and I still have a port open to charge another one of the 27 or so different electronic devices that seem to clutter my life!
Some details on the changes I made on my car chargers

Thanks for this. It's been driving me mad how car chargers and cables are so inconsistent. Pun intended.
Seriously, why can they come up with a standard and call it a day?
I have a had a few GPS/Pandora runs. Even while it says AC charging and my charger is rated for 1A, it drains the battery by 300-400ma.

Struggling with a car charger

Hey, I am hoping someone can help me find the correct car charger adapter for my Galaxy note. I have tried a few and struggled.
I am looking for an adapter similar to this ... http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002C3AFHG
The problem is that it doesnt output correct (5v, 1mAmp ... read comment http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R2LOQFBMC3I746/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R2LOQFBMC3I746) ... as a result, the charge is very slow and not useful for using device as a sat nav.
Is there anyone who has bought such an adapter that charges well?
Thanks.:cyclops:
Yes. The stock SAMSUNG car charger charges at a rate sufficient to increase the charge in the battery while using a nav device.
A search in this forum will find an older thread that discussed this. On member tested many car chargers and discovered that the SAMSUNG was the only one he found that performed properly.
Based on that review, I purchased the SAMSUNG charger on either ebay or amazon (don't remember) for a very good price. I also saved a great deal of money by not purchasing a bunch of cheapies that didn't work! I have been very pleased with my purchase.

You'll have to do the rest yourself. I'm not going to buy it for you.

You can use any standard usb charger and get the correct current with a modified USB cable.
There is a thread in the forum tells you how to modify it. Basically, shorten the pin 3 and 4 (data differential pair) of the USB connector, and you will smile.

I'm using a cheapo 1amp USB car charger and a standard micro usb cable. Works well with my Note.
Currently I'm using a 2100mah output car charger with 2 in 1 (apple + micro usb) charging head to charge my notes. It can charge and ipad with no problem.
Fast charging from the 2.1A output
Difference betweeb 1a and 2
Hi guys,
My cheap car charger I bought from ebay do not charge my note, when I use the navigation.
1) How do I check whether they are 0.5a or 1a. It is not written on the charger and not in the description on ebay. How do I mesure that, with an android software?
2) Is there a difference between using a 1a and 2a car charger or is this limited to 1a anyway?
thanks
I have purchased this very recently and looks like it is doing a good job. My phone gets charged perfectly during my driving

Interesting.
This is what I just bought on dealextreme.com:

Will see if 2.1A will charge it faster... At least I will have the option between 1A and 2.1A
Samsung stock charger is the best. Charges my Note at the same rate as the travel charger

That's what I posted in the first response to the OP a month ago. I only bought this one car charger for $19 including free overnight shipping.
I am amazed when I read of people buying several of the cheapies that almost never work as well as the OEM charger, because they think $19 is too much to pay for a charger. They spend at least that much on multiple chargers plus MULTIPLE SHIPPING and still don't have a charger that works well!
Just buy the OEM. You'll save money and have a charger that works well when using Sat Nav.

3a charger + charge adapater
If you just want it easy and dont mind the cost, get the sumsang charger - Im just not sure if it shows up as "AC charging" or the slower "USB charging" and if it will actually charge up with full brightness on, GPS, wifi, bluetooth all at once... I do use all those at once.
But if your ok with a bit of fiddling around, get a 12v step down to 5v 3amp power module and use it with a dedicated ic chip charger cable - it will work with all androids and even the misus iphone and will always give fast AC mode charging with more amps than most phones need. or use it to power 2-3 devices.
$5 for the power adatper

$2 for the charging cable (example)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-in1-mult...903429?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3cc9932cc5
$1 for a cigarette connector, only to use the cigarette connector body.

The important part is getting a charger cable with the inbuilt IC chip to tell the gnote to go into AC charging mode, otherwise this solution has been working great for years.

[Q] Need Opinion/info on Qmadix 4.4A USB Triple Travel Charging Hub...

So Im in desperate need of at least one more Wall charge for my galaxy note 8.0 and Galaxy S4. The only problem is they're either pretty expensive for the more legit products, or sketchy. I just need the white box part that goes into the wall outlet. SO incredibly embarrassing and frustrating that I can't seem to figure out what it's actually called. In any case, through my searches I found this:
Qmadix 4.4A USB Triple Travel Charging Hub
It allows for three ports, but each port is designated differently. well, okay... two are the same (1A), but ones different (2.4A). I have no clue about electricity, except to know if you don't use the samsung recommended converters it could damage the battery in the long run. Im under the impression that both of my devices require 2.0A. Does this mean only the 2.4A port would work?
Is anyone familiar with this Item Ive listed? Could I use this device to power bot my Galaxy Note 8.0 AND Galaxy S4 at the same time?
It seems like such a great deal and very compact. Can't pass up without at least asking about it.
again, Im asking about the:

I appreciate the reply. I had actually seen that and immediately fell in love... but I just as quickly wrote it off because of the additional cable thats required to plug it into an outlet. I need something more compact... something with collapsible prongs.
Another one I was looking at is this one iXCC Dual USB 4.2 Amp (20 Watt) SMART High Capacity AC Travel Wall Charger...
Any thought?
Ports listed as 1A might still be able to supply 2A for your phone, but they might be right at the top of their current limiting (thus running warmer). The whole thing about using only Samsung provided charger is just to scare you off so you buy their original overpriced accessories But there is a truth to it as well, when you buy cheap stuff from ebay where they sell 1A rated outputs labeled with 2A and can run into a problem above (overheating, which causes short, which can cause a damage to your phone). Anker is a trusted brand with a decent quality control, RAVPower is good, and I heard of QMadix before as well.
Here is a problem. When you are dealing with wall outlet converters with multiple outputs that carry a lot of heat/power, you are too close to the main electrical outlet. So, I would be careful not too overload these. Maybe using 2 devices plugged in at a time is ok, but NEVER 3 at a time. When you have something like that 40W Anker converter, you are placing it away from the outlet, it exposed to air circulation from every side (cooling it better), and it should have some fuse or internal protection in case of a short. I understand, for convenience you need wall converter that plugs in, but make sure you get a double one, not the triple output one because i would consider those to be not as reliable when you are charging 3 devices at the same time while plugged into a single wall outlet directly.
Anker also make this one: www.amazon.com/Anker®-4-Port-Charger-Travel-Adapter/dp/B00EI8SS4U/ - but I would not load more than 2 ports at a time. Or if you load 3 or 4 ports, make sure it's not overnight when you are sleeping and that all 4 charging devices are not drawing max current
Btw, one quick question... The Anker 40W 5-port USB wall charger... Should I only charge 2 devices at a time with it aswell? or was that referring only to chargers that plug directly into the wall because of the heat issue?

You can use all 5 ports on that one (40W version that doesn't plug into wall outlet directly). That how I do it all the way, mostly using 4 ports at once to charge my Note 2, my Metawatch smartwatch, my mp3/DAP player, and external battery. Sometime also add my wireless headset too
