[Q] Intermittent media playback issue, cannot fix, can anyone suggest further options - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had an Epic 4G since October, with flawless performance (other than the usual batch of Epic issues like GPS, TWS, etc). Recently however (probably starting about May-ish), I have an intermittent issue with media playback that has me very frustrated, and am hoping to get some help fixing it.
The Problem:
At random, for no apparent reason, my ringtone (a custom MP3) will cease to work. When this occurs, attempting to check Visual Voicemail messages also fails (messages won't play), and attempting to play back any MP3s in Music Player results in a "Sorry, this media format is unsupported" message. If I reboot the phone, or unmount/remount my SD card, the issue corrects itself, but will recur after 1-2 days.
What I Have Done So Far:
* Rebooted the phone (issue recurs)
* Unmounted/remounted SD card (issue recurs)
* Reformatted SD card, reloaded media (issue recurs)
* Reset to factory defaults via ## code (issue recurs, but takes longer - about a week for symptoms to return)
* SD Card Reader replaced at Repair Center (issue recurs)
* Wipe Data / Wipe Cache / Return to stock EC05 firmware via Odin, reformat SD card (issue recurs after about a week, same as with reset to factory defaults)
* Reset to factory defaults + data restore (different ## code than one used before, done by a Sprint tech at the local repair center - results pending)
After the first full reset, I reloaded all of my commonly-used applications immediately. On the second full reset (where I Odin'd), I waited a week before reloading applications, only to have the same eventual result.
I'm running out of things to try. I'm not reloading any of my applications this time, I'm only going to use the preloaded apps and see if the issue recurs again. Should it do so, the only other options I can think of are:
* Replace SD card
* Wait for Gingerbread update in case it's something in EC05
* Replace phone (in which case I will likely end up going with an EVO 3D)
I cannot get it replaced in-warranty (my phone was rooted, and when I was at the repair center today the tech told me they won't allow a free replacement because Sprint Corporate has flagged my account indicating that my phone was rooted), so I'll either have to make a claim through Asurion or just buy a new phone outright.
Is there anything else you all can think of that I can try to fix this issue? I'm open to trying a non-stock ROM at this point since my phone can't be in-warranty replaced anyway. Do you guys think this is a software issue? Hardware? Is it something with the apps I'm running, maybe (all of which are either from the Amazon Appstore or the Google Marketplace, many of which are also used by my friend with a Vibrant who has had no such issues).
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi buckminst, me and my wife both had the same issue. Were both on ec05. My phone is rooted and she is not. My phone stopped getting the mentioned error since I got to sfr1.2 ROM (which btw is awesome). She is still running stock and once in a while will get the interminent error you got. So maybe its something cooked into the stock ec05. My 2 cents.

Evo Froyo 2.2 update causing Sense slowdown

Hi all,
I recently updated through the OTA update to Froyo 2.2 on a stock EVO 4g (not rooted or messed with at all). When I finished the update, I sent a couple apps to my SD card (like Where was one, forgot the rest, maybe Flikie wallpapers). After that, the SD card was somehow permanently corrupted, I couldn't even format it on the phone or through a card reader on a PC. Anyway, then I started noticing extreme slowdowns on my phone's Sense interface (even today after putting in a new card). For example, when I try to type a text message, I put like a few letters from the person's name and it takes a good 30 seconds to show the results as opposed to instantly. Also, when a call comes in, the number shows up for a few seconds until it recognizes the contact, etc. Could it be because without a working SD card, things were put on the phone and now the phone is full (even though now I have a new card in there)? Or does anyone know why else this could be and maybe offer a solution? Thanks, greatly appreciate any guidance.
Hi all, just as an update, I got a new SD card in there, factory reset the phone, and all was well. However, now, again, after a few days, when I open the SMS app, and type a name, I get nothing for like 10-15 seconds, then it starts processing my request and pulling the name I was looking for. Any idea what could be causing this? This is the only remaining problem I have after the factory reset and reinstall of everything basically.

[Q] Desire freezes at startup screen

Guys,
Recently my HTC Desire seems to be having some problems. Right now I'm unable to start up my phone. It basically freezes at the HTC startup screen.
These are the symptoms I experienced over the past two weeks, which may or may not be related to the problem:
A couple of weeks ago, I was no longer to update the Weather/clock widget via 2G. Not a problem via wifi, and internet via 2G was also not a problem (my carrier doesn't have 3G). Around the same time the phone started resetting itself when I was playing Angry birds for a while (say, 10 minutes or so).
Then this weekend I took a flight, so I switched off the phone, then on arrival, it no longer wanted to switch on anymore. It almost got me into serious trouble!
The phone was never flashed with 3rd party ROM, and was running Android 2.2, which was an OTA update from HTC.
I tried going into the bootloader and clear the user data, and run recovery (not all at the same time). The recovery function didn't do anything other than reboot the phone. Ultimately I was not able to do anything with the bootloader. And the phone is still freezing on startup.
I also tried restarting it without the SD card installed (I read somewhere online that someone had a problem like that), and without the SIM card installed (I had a busted SIM card a while ago which made the phone do silly things like drop connection etc.).
Can anyone tell me what this could mean? Is this repairable? Moreover, if yes, is it actually WORTH getting repaired?
Is it possible to repair it by flashing a new ROM? If yes, how do I do this considering that I couldn't work out how to function the bootloader with the phone (though admittedly, I didn't have an alternative ROM either on the phone or on the SD card...)
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks

[Q] Problem with phone sending massive amounts of data

My girlfriend's Arc is sending up to 50 mb of data every day and also receiving somewhere near that amount. I've had several data monitoring apps on it and they all give pretty much the same amount, and those that show what's been using the data all say it's the OS itself, so I can't manage the data it sends by any other means than switching data off entirely.
This has been happening for about a month and seems to be getting worse. She was running Gingerbread and I did two fresh installs, but they didn't change anything. I've now put Generic Global ICS on it and it's still the same.
Does anyone have any ideas? Another side effect seems to be that it's killing the battery. Could it even be a hardware problem?
hello, the phone consume more battery because is always accessing 2G/3G/WIFI networks to send all that data, in fact, is 10x more than the normal ... may have several reasons: virus, GPS tracking, ghost email (which sends information to) hidden applications of own carrier. The last two have already happened to me and the only solution was to format ALL. It is best to do a fresh install, with another type of GB (a trusted one) and a new baseband. If the problem persists try to install ICS and, if you don´t like ICS, come back again to the GB(after install ICS) so you can be sure that everything was formatted. Obviously has to be with "Bootloader Unlock". I hope I have helped ...
If data syncing is turned on, it will keep checking to see if you have new emails etc.
A huge data hog is the facebook application. It was so bad that I ended up freezing it with Titanium Backup.
I don't think the problem is Facebook as that's showing in the list of apps that are using data and it's not using that much. I'll delete it and see what happens though. The data seems to be being sent by the OS itself, not any one app.
I'm already on ICS and that hasn't helped. When you say format, what do you mean? Do a factory reset? A clean install? I think the bootloader is locked, but I'll check that.
Could the problem be with something on the SD card?
If I understand correctly, you have the "locked bootloader" then the more certain is an hidden application (from your operator) that consume all this data and has nothing to do with Facebook, I use this and another mobile phone and never, not even close, it's consuming 100mb (in + out) as you can see a use of the following three days ... The best is to do "bootloader unlock" (without which you will never do a full format) or if still under warranty, and if you have not done anything that operators do not like, you go to the store and claim about that ... I think this kind of applications are never installed on the SD ... With "locked bootloader" a factory reset only reinstall the same stuff…

Problem: Game Apps won't stay installed

The first app I had problems with was Battle camp. After I downloaded the Christmas update the app wouldn't install. It kept throwing invalid manifest errors. So I Uninstalled the app and reinstalled it. Now it installs and I can open it. But, if the app gets killed from the app switcher or a couple hours of doing other things when I try to open the app it crashes and pops up with a suddenly stopped report that I can submit.
At that point I have to reboot to try and open the app with out the suddenly stopped error. After the reboot the app icon changes to a generic android guy. When I try to open it, it says the app isn't installed.
Last night the OTA AT&T update hit my phone. This morning 2 more games showed the generic android guy for an icon and said app not installed. Dungeon Hunter 4 and Galaxy on fire 2.
I didn't bother trying to reinstall them and as far as I know they didn't have any updates.
Now I went to play Star Wars Commander and it said there was an update. I updated and it installed fine. But, now I have the same problem with that app as Battle camp. Works once then auto crashes. On reboot it says not installed.
I am sooooooo wishing I had traded my Note 2 for an iPhone 6+...
Any suggestions?

Reset the device in the settings.
You mean do a factory reset?

SNAFU!!
I used My files to copy all my photos, easy note notes, zedge files, etc to my SD card.
I then removed the SD card after I checked all the folders to make sure there was data in the copied folders. I understand mounted the SD card and removed it from the phone. I powered down the phone and used volume up, home, & power button to get to the reset menu. I reset all data and cleared the cashe.
After the reboot I powered down and reinstalled the SD card. All the data I copied is gone. All the existing data I put on it with my computer (music, video from my note 2, etc) is still there. All copied folders from before the reset are empty. Photos shows all my pictures I copied as broken links that when you click on them it says no data found.
I reinstalled Battle camp and Star Wars commander. Both showed broken links 10 minutes after install I hadn't even got to opening them because.i was trying to find my missing SD card data. Both shortcuts say app not installed when clicked on.
I guess I will be stopping at AT&T after work to see about exchanging my POS phone.
i had problems on my S4 with keeping apps from disappearing on my homescreen. Turned out to be the install location of some apps. For some reason, some apps install directly to my external SD Card, which causes it to disappear upon reboot. I dont have problems with it crashing or uninstalling but maybe its related. Try removing your sd card and then installing it and seeing if it crashes with the sdcard physically removed.
AT&T is sending me a replacement
SD card installed or not. It is still losing apps. And, the writing to the SD card issue was enough for AT&T tech support to send me a warranty replacement. Their oustanding in store customer service not withstanding (sarcasm), I am pretty happy. The replacement is a refurb, but I will get it tomorrow. The kicker is the AT&T live chat guy says the manager of the store I was in should have replaced my phone on the spot instead of sending me home to talk to tech support myself. Maybe the manager should have been helping her girl, that was helping me, instead of hiding in the back room with the other 2 employees that were working. At least they are crediting me the 2 day shipping charge.
those 'refurbs' usually always look brand new. Good luck with it.
The Refurbished does look brand new
I got it activated and sure enough I am still having the same issues. Now the chances of 2 bad phones is pretty remote. So I grabbed my 32gb card out of my action cam. A sandisk SD card.
Formatted it and everything seems fine now. Apps aren't uninstalling themselves and my files actually transfers files to the card that stay after a reboot.
I guess my 2 64gb SD cards (1 samsung and one sandisk) are just funky. They work fine on my computer and in other devices but my 2 note 4s didn't like them

SIM card recognized but no service

TL;DR
Moto Z2 Play - XT1710-07
The phone recognizes the SIM card but there is no signal (no service). Tried several things, including flashing a custom ROM. I'm considering buying a new motherboard and changing it myself, but first want to know if anyone knows more about this issue or has an idea/suggestion.
Edit: As an added bonus, something that only now I realized. Now when I charge it, it gets EXTREMELY hot. Like I-can't-even-use-it hot. I used to use the phone while charging all the time, but now I can't even hold it. Seems like the problem is when it tries go past 80% charge. It gets super slow, keeps trying and gets hot. Now I don't know if it's a software problem caused by the various flashings or if it's something that would remain even after swapping the motherboard.
Edit 2: I did a full discharge of the phone and recharged it while turned off. It seems to have normalized the battery problem
Edit 3: RIP. I tried to remove the screen before deciding about buying a new board. In the process, I ended up tearing the digitizer flat cable apart. Now I don't think it's worth it buying both a new screen and a motherboard.
The full story and things I've tried
My phone was working all nice and dandy until it stopped having signal/service. Wifi works normally, but anything related to the SIM card doesn't, like phone calls or mobile data.
A list of things I've tried somewhat in order (both of time and of complexity):
* My SIM in another phone: it works normally, so the problem is not the SIM itself
* Another SIM in my phone: it doesn't work, so the problem is definitely the phone
* Using the second SIM slot
* Changing "Preferred Network Type" between the available ones (4G, 3G, 2G, including Enhanced 4G LTE Mode on and off): this one and the next two items don't really make sense to me, since these options seem to be only related to mobile data (4G/3G internet) connection, not to phone calls which is also not working, but I tried them anyway
* Manually selecting the network: Errors with "Selected network unavailable" and, after trying to register for a while, toasts another error saying "Can't connect to the network, try again later"
* Manually selecting the APN: Tried both selecting between the two options available and manually adding an APN by googling the correct info for my carrier
* Simply booting into fastboot and restarting bootloader: a video on YouTube claimed that it was a temporary solution and that I'd need to do it every time it lost signal. But it didn't even work the first time
* Disabling CQATest and then restarting bootloader (and also clearing its data/cache and removing its permissions): a lot of videos on YouTube claimed this was a solution, including for other Motorola phones. Apparently CQATest prevents the phone from working properly in some scenarios. But I think only when you de-google your phone? Not sure. All I know is that it didn't work either
* Using the phone connected to the wall charger: I think this was another YouTube suggestion, and it actually worked for a few minutes. But I guess it was just a coincidence, as it never worked again
Now for some more... "forceful" attempts:
* Factory Reset: Not sure where I saw this suggestion, but it was pretty much the next logical step. Gathered courage, backed up all my data, etc, aaand... nothing again
* Flashing another ROM: Guess it was here at XDA that I read that it was a problem with Motorola's stock ROM. That, paired with my belief that it could still be related to CQATest being installed, I again gathered more courage to flash a custom ROM. I chose LineageOS and found out that it was no longer supported, but decided to install the last official release. I also read that the problem was the Pie modem firmware, so it all seemed to be going fine since the last official release is Oreo 8.1. I flashed it and BAM it worked! ... for a few minutes and never again. I messed around with LineageOS, tried some of the previous things again, but nothing.
Then, I tried to restore my TWRP backup but it didn't work. So I searched a bit more and downloaded the Stock Pie ROM, flashed it, and closed the bootloader. And then I realized the restore probably didn't work since my backup was made using Pie and my phone was on Oreo. Maybe some files/partitions were missing? Also, when I was creating my TWRP backups, I tried creating a full system image backup but it kept erroring. Only later I realized the problem was that the USB Drive was FAT32 and the full system image was bigger than 4GB. Oh, well, now I know.
So now that I'm with my phone pretty much back on square one, I take it to an authorized repair shop. The clerk said that it was a common problem, and that sometimes it could be solved "by software" and that they'd try that. The other option was to change the whole motherboard, which they didn't do because it was "not worth it" and "almost the full price of a new phone". After two days, my suspicions were confirmed: they didn't fix it with their "by software" attempt. At least I didn't have to pay anything.
When I got the phone back, I put the SIM in again and it showed the icon as if there was signal. But when I tried to call someone, the signal disappeared again. I tried searching a bit more, went through all pages of Q&A here at XDA forums and there were like 3 posts regarding loss of signal. All without any response. On YouTube, I found some videos offering a suspicious .bat file. Upon inspection, it merely erased the modemst1 and modemst2 partitions and then wiped user data and cache. I tried it, nothing to lose. Also didn't work.
Now I'm contemplating a few options:
By watching some disassembly videos, I saw that, when opened, the phone has some parts that act like antennas. I thought that maybe those were not properly connected to the board? Maybe they got dislodged during a fall? Seems unlikely tho, since they are screwed in. I searched for a new motherboard to buy and it's a reasonable price. But I'm afraid it'll have the same problem (or develop it in a short time) since I can't find anywhere what the true cause of the problem is.
Another option is to just give up, buy a new phone and use this one as if it was a "small tablet" lol
So, do you guys have any other suggestions or ideas as to what might be the problem? Maybe a tip like "solder a wire to this spot to create a make-do antenna"? I don't really know where else to search.
If not, thanks anyway for those who read it all
