[Q] noob question about launchers and app organization - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all. I've been lurking on the forum for a bit over a month now while trying to learn as much as i could about android and the epic4g. It's my first android phone and first experience with android.
That being said, i have had experience with ios devices (i own an ipod touch 4g and ipad2) and jailbroken apps like folderenhancer, and prior to going to android i've exclusively owned symbian devices.
For specs, I'm currently running LauncherPro Plus as my launcher on the genocide 2.0 kernel with the Syndicate Rom Frozen v1.2 rom, rooted of course.
What i'm wondering though, is if there is some way to create folders and nest folders to better organize all of the applications i have on the epic. I've played around with Folder Organizer, and it seems okay, but it's not the most intuitive software, especially when you start nesting folders by using their labels.
I would preferably like it within the launcher, so that when i hit the application button (or whatever it is called, the button that pulls up the list of all installed apps), i could then click on my custom folders and quickly find what app i want. Having to flick and scroll through all my apps alphabetically isn't the most efficient method of organization (IMO).
Thank you!

I'm not sure about launcher pro, I used it for a few days but I like the Anarchy Launcher that came with the TrInItY rom when I was running DK28 so I've just always used that . You should, however, just be able to long press and make/ set a folder on whatever screen you are on and then open up your app drawer and find the app you want and long press on it and drop it in the folder you made. Don't know if that will help you accomplish what you wanted to do but that's what I did to group apps for easy access...

Go launcher does have pretty good folder options. I would recommend trying that one as well.

Tw4 meaning touchwiz? I haven't looked into that, but i will, thanks. Go Launcher i have seen before, and that was what i was going to try, based on how many themes and things were available for it.

Go Launcher EX does the folder organizing you want very well. You can even create folders in the app drawer and create shortcuts to each folder on the Home screen, etc.

I agree and use GO in this manner as well. And when u open app drawer and move apps in folders, if that folder also has a shortcut to homescreen it will have the new added app as well. I had launcher pro come on my rom as well but removed it for GO instead bc I like the folder setup way better

[HELP]How to cook Launcher Pro Plus into CM6?

I need some help into cooking Launcher Pro Plus into CM6. I bought and installed it to my current CM6 test5 from koush and it runs really, really good. Best one yet. I understand that it works great, as is, but I'd like to cook it in and take ADW Launcher out.
I know I would need to do much more than just switching out apk's. What other files would I have to modify for cooking it in?
Would it be much easier for me to push, pull, and modify a few files from my current ROM?
I just want it installed as my main launcher in system. The PLUS version is a paid app so I'm sure I won't be the only one asking how to do this.
7 zip works.

Wouldnt it be as easy as deleting ADW and the just pushing Launcher Pro to /system/
Don't really think you need to do anything else.

Heh. Well that's what i'm trying to find out. I thought I would have to modify more files to instruct the install process or 2.2 to look for Launcher Pro Plus, instead of ADW.
I'm a noob so I don't know.

You can have multiple launchers on your phone. If you put LauncherPro and others on your phone. If you have more then one installed at first it will ask you when your first boot your phone to select which one you want to run. It also has an option to set as default, meaning that is the default launcher that will always go to. If you don't set a default, every time you press the home key it will ask you which launcher to run. If you set a default and later want to change it to another launcher, go to settings>applications>choose the current default launcher and select clear defaults. Then it will go back to asking what you want to launch when you press the home key and you can choose a new default.

Why not just remove ADW through root and reinstall LauncherProPlus from Titanium Backup? Provided you already have a version saved on there?
So... you're going to put one of t
he few paid apps that deserves a couple if bucks in a publicly available download?
Edit: nevermind, my noobness didn't read the post more carefully. My apologies.

[REQ] easy app uninstall

Ok, I have noticed on some alternative launchers (like launcher pro for example) if you drag an icon onto the "desktop" from the app drawer and hold it on top of the trash for a few seconds, it will prompt you to uninstall the app.....
Is there any way of getting this implemented into some of the custom roms around here? or is there something I could install as an "update.zip" to acquire this ability? I like the stock sense launcher so I don't really want to install and alternative launcher for this.....surely there is a way!

It's an app you click into it lists all installed apps so you can uninstall easily its not the same thing but its easier uninstalls

I'll pass then....if I'm gonna do that then I'll just go into the built in manager apps and uninstall it.
Thanks anyway!
Like I said, it is a feature that I like about launcher pro, but I don't want to install a different launcher JUST for that feature. Oh well, I'll just deal with the normal process!

Is there a way to save app layout / folders when flashing ROMs?

I find myself spending considerable time "re-organizaing" my phone after flashing. Is there a way to keep the folders I created, and better yet, the layout of my homescreen, widgets, etc. when flashing new roms?

Most custom launchers support this. I've used go launcher ex, adw launcher, and launcher pro and they all will backup your configurations.

Thanks jwiner for asking this question. I assumed the answer was no, so was glad to see that I could back up using ADW settings. I am on CM7 currently but hadn't paid much attention the ADW settings until now.
Does that back up the widgets too? After restoring with TiBu I always get a "cannot open widget" or something like that. LPP says it's an Android thing that can't backup widget configurations
Sent from my CM7'd Dinc 2 using XDA Premium App
Widgets will be saved in the spot you set em. However, you will need to delete & reset each one.
That's been my experience as well. Thanks
Sent from my CM7'd Dinc 2 using XDA Premium App
There is no way with stock HTC sense to save the layout.
Custom roms with alternative launchers do have so options however you still need to reinstall the appropriate applications for the widgets to function correctly.
Same here
I'm using ADW and as far as I can tell, you can backup only the current layout, but I want a way to save each of my layouts and be able to go back and choose one of them again like you can in the Sense layouts. It takes me several days to get everything set up, custom icons made, and tweaking until it's just right. So it sucks that you can't go back and reuse all of them when you want.

Do you use Titanium?
I thought launchers with backup/restore only restored settings and actual apps on the screen. Every time I used them they never restore widgets, I always have to remove the gray block and re-add the widgets.
If you use a folder tool like folder organizer Titanium will backup those folders and apps inside of them.

[Q] best launcher and why?

I use launcher pro, but I was wondering other people's opinion because I don't. Know what makes one better than the other. Performance speed.and things like that. I just know I hate touch wiz.... thanks in advance.....

Agreed, golauncher does it for me, but the apk is rather bloated and after reviewing has a lot of useless features that make it sumwat battery unfriendly.. would b nice to have an alternitave with similar features without all the unnecessary extras

I've paid for and used Launcher Pro and ADW EX each for months, then I saw saw the thread here on sslauncher. Free, and amazing. I'm never going back to the others.
Launcher Pro was my favorite, but it is becoming outdated due to lack of updates. GO Launcher EX has great features and is free. ADW EX is also good but it is a paid app. I would go with GO Launcher EX. Its fast, lots of customization, and its free.
I actually like TW compared to the others I tried (which is about all of them). I like to be able to touch the dots to change screens instead of swiping. I can go from homescreen 1 to 5 with just one touch. Same with the app drawer. I have 12 pages of apps. I don't need to keep swiping from one page to the other to get through them all, or if I have it on continuous, I don't have to scroll from top to bottom. If I'm on page 1, and I need page 10, I just tap that dot.
I like Go better than all the rest. I like the ease of being able to long press an icon and then being able to delete from screen, change the icon, or add a gesture on the homescreen.
I also like the fact that in the app drawer you can hide apps from showing without having to freeze them using titanium backup. I use this to keep my app drawer organized. I hide all the apps in the app drawer that i have in my dock. No point in having them show up in 2 places.
Also with Go you can have up to 3 docks. you just swipe left or right to get to more apps on the dock. I use this to keep my homescreen as clean looking as possible.
ADW Launcher EX is great! But on ICS I use APEX, Nova Prime, and sometimes Trebuchet, but I only have ICS on my Kindle Fire right now so I can't get the full experience on my phone. ADW Launcher EX can be themed in multiple ways, I use the ICS theme on my phone. So basically use ADW!

You would probably have to find an app or a different launcher to do it, i have looked all though this rom and found nothing to create folders outside of the stacked folders on the homepage

Yeah, why don't you re-read the question.....
EDIT: I devoured the Trebuchet v0.1 (CM9 default launcher) in and out, but can't find a way to create tabs or manage tabs in app drawer. Currently I have around 270 apps and games on my phone, so I need the feature badly! I finally gave up and purchased the Nova Launcher Prime for $5; it's the best launcher ever, it got everything I wanted.
For the free alternative, try ADW Launcher. ADW has been updated to match the look and feel of ICS, and although it's not as smooth as Nova, it DOES HAVE folders and custom tabs in app drawer. Cheers.
