[SOLVED] Facebook "Like" button leads to horrendous pageload slowdown - About xda-developers.com

Not sure if anyone else is running into this, but lately any thread I open on XDA is PAINFULLY slow. Scrolling is unresponsive for a long time. In my status bar in Chrome it says that the site is waiting on www.facebook.com to load..
Loading individual forums seems to work just fine. It's only threads that this happens in.
Is anyone else running into this? What is going on here??
EDIT: When the hell was the Facebook Like button introduced? I blocked the widget via the WidgetBlock Chrome Extension and now speed is back to normal.
Horribly poor implementation, I can't possibly be the only one who experienced this.

not sure. Becoming more happy I joined with the old style forum that doesn't have thank or like buttons...

thanks for the link, solved my issues
I was coming to this forum to complain
fixed my slowdown issues with androidcentral as well

I just noticed the "Like" button myself. Thank for the link to remove it.
Are we going to be seeing +1 buttons shortly as well?

If +1 buttons come to XDA, don't worry, because that Chrome extension I posted was already updated to block that too

I was having the same issue and have removed the while <li> that contained the button with AdBlock in Chrome for now.
I have PM'd svetius with a link to this thread.

Not really, since it's technically a google user blocking google, not google itself.

Adverts "pulling" page downwards

Have noticed this for the last few days using IE6 at work.
When reading the forums the page jumps to the Google Ad at the bottom, which means I have to scroll back up to the where I was.
Anyone else noticing this with IE6 or other browsers?

Nope only happens on this site. Think it's linked to the new type of Google ad which www.Swoopo.co.uk are running.
I can confirm this too, IE 7 Windows XP SP2, thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=396922

Very funny! Tried Dave's Link, did not happen for me this time also, I don't know could be because of slow internet connection, Prehistoric PC (P4 2.0 Gig )! No idea! But funny all the same, and thank GOD!

Pretty sure it the one ad which is doing it, I've tried to contact Google to see if they can sort it out. The other option is for the Google Ad Admin of the site to block ads from www.Swoopo.co.uk
Guessing for those outside of the UK won't have the issue as Google change the ads depending on which country you are in.

Tested on Vista Utimate x64 SP1 and XP SP2.
This is driving me mad, clicking on the link for the newest post just doesn't work with these ads as it moves the page.
Can anyone who has the Google Adsense admin add www.Swoopo.co.uk to the blacklist.

Can we get a Google +1 button?

With the huge response to Google + (Google Plus).... I'm wondering can the site implement the +1 button on pages? We have a "Tweet this thread" button. A Facebook "Like" button...but no +1

something else to bog the threads down with???
Apparently the facebook like buttons are killing the thread load times for some people.

Well, maybe they should be removed then...lol! How would it bog down the threads? But do people use them is the question? And if they do, that's a good thing...right?
This site is big on "Searching"... adding +1 would make things easier to find from Google (I think)
Where is XDA Developers on Google Plus?
I have requested this as well. I'm sure it will be added soon. They just have to work on the few remaining issues with the FB button.
@nrfitchett4 The slowness experienced by some with the button has been resolved.

Given the Android angle I'd hope to see +1/circle support as soon as possible, if only to be fair on the twitter/fb/google spread.
I agree with the idea of +1-ing the google search result too though.

If you do search in Google+ you can find "XDA Developers". By Tuesday morning there be probably 3000 people in there.
I've heard some say the mobile app will not find it. You have to use the desktop browser.
+1 button would definitely be helpful..

Intrusive ads? Post here!

The internet is full of advertisments and let's face it, almost every site that has an ounce of traffic uses ad revenue. The intention of xda is not to burden its members with ads that distract from the user experience. With that being said, if you have a problematic ad, please take a screenshot of the ad and post here so admin can take care of it. right now, that is the solution in place.
Thanks for your help in keeping XDA "intrusive ad free".

It doesn't happen all the time but I have this "mobprizes" redirect when visiting XDA.
Happened to me a few times so far, not sure if others are experiencing it.
Same as chazam ^^^^
First instance of it today. Web URL is mobprizes.com and the site header says 'Android Rewards'. Tried to browse XDA via Dolphin browser on Android and was auto-redirected to this spam page; you cannot press 'Back' or 'Exit' in the browser and have to click 'OK', whereupon another window opens asking you to enter your mob number (supposedly so they can contact you to sort out sending you your prize - which if you do a quick search on Google means you will receive plenty of premium rate text messages and no prize!).
Not sure what you folks can do but thought would mention it.
Incidentally, when performing a search re: this, one of the replies was on Yahoo Answers - when I clicked on this I was redirected to the same damn Android Rewards page!
I also noticed another forum in the search results is experiencing the same thing. Seems to be spreading.
Attached.
That ad at the bottom left corner just popped up from nowhere. I may not have captured it completely sry...
Edit: it's an IE rollover to view ad.
Hey everyone,
I have also created a forum where people (including myself) are experiencing similar problems.
Perhaps it would be a great idea to share our knowledge between the two forums and see what we can do to get rid of these annoying ads.
would of if i didnt have ad block

The JS alert window looks like that, since FF4.0. Type javascript:alert('test message') into the address bar.
Please remove this
I'm not really bothered by the ads so i dont need an ad blocker but this 'IE rollover to view' ad is being a pain in the rear.
Pls get rid of it.
Thanks.
Edit: started using ad blocker
i clicked a reply notification from an email sent by the forum
this is the page it took me to
i blanked out my location to stop aliens tracking me
No offence meant to anyone here, but I'm quite surprised at all of this. Adblocks for Chrome and Firefox are available easily, nobody uses IE anymore and if you're on XDA you probably have a rooted phone and should logically therefore have an adblock app. If you really dislike ads, there's no need to put up with them

Don't the ads only work if you click on them? As fas as I know nobody actually clicks on the ads unless it's by accident to disabling them doesn't really have a negative effect on the site

New Avast is too annoying, will be migrating our thousands of customers off it
I'm going to haveto agree with the OP in this one.
The advertising is becoming annoying and the re-registering method has been made to be difficult to see where the free option is...
Quickfix I disagree with you, this product is the most popular free Antivirus not because of bull**** advertising, but because of word of mouth!

I just had the same thing. I click on 'OK' or whatever it said when i should probably have just used the back button. It took me to the mobprizes thing which is clearly a scam. Hopefully just being taken to the site but not clicking anything wont have installed any malicious (i've literally no idea about android malware/viruses etc.).

Disabled open in a new tab by scroll-wheel click

I don't know why but such useful browser feature doesn't really work on XDA-Developers forums. For example I see a itneresting new on the right side widget. I middle mouse button click it, but it won't open in a new tab, but instead it will open in the current tab just like I would left click it. I can give you numbers of similiar behaviours like that over the xda. That's really annoying.
Why is that happening and are you guys ever going to fix it?

Suggest you try an alternate browser.
Also try a fresh profile in case something in your current profile is the cause.
Its not working for me can you suggest me an other way ?
Does it still work correctly on other sites?
Not a Chrome user so can't really help with it.
General troubleshooting though. Try other sites. Try a clean profile.
Try other tools with the problem site.

It does work correctly on every other website. There's no "clean profile" option in chrome and I have no idea what do you mean by "other tools".
This issue happens with particular stuff, like the widget with the news on the right side of the thread view.

I'd actually would prefer to use the old theme either way so I could use Dark XDA Stylish theme by @GermainZ as for me it looks much better. Just a presonal preference.

We had additional google analytics code on those links, my guess is that was blocking the open in new tab option. We made this change a long time ago so this must have been long-standing.

XDA Forums keeps logging me in??

I'm experiencing a strange issue with XDA and it's forums. I'll click the XDA forum link on my bookmark bar (Chrome or Opera) and I will be auto logged in, so that's great. But if I click to go to any different page in XDA, it keeps re-logging me back in instead of remembering that I just did that.
Does anyone know a fix for this as it's quite annoying.

That's a limitation of our API...everytime you load a page, it has to "reach out" to our API to figure out if you have new notifications. But the team here says they're working on a fix to store this info locally so there is no delay :highfive:

I also have this problem and can confirm that changing the theme from 2015 Dark to 2013 fix the annoying "Redirecting..." issue.
Hope that it will be fixed for the Dark theme, too, because 2013' looks so old now!
