If you unlock it, it costs nothing. Just go overseas, buy a sim card, and pop it in your phone.
Carelessly swyped on my phone so there may be some weird typos

How can I tell if my SIM is unlocked?

I am S-off and Rooted. How can I tell if my SIM is unlocked? I will be traveling to Amsterdam this week and want to verify that my phone is ready. Do I still have to call Verizon for an unlock code?
Thanks!

Moved to proper forum.
I am not sure if the s-off and root alone are enough to unlock the phone. I had to call verizon to unlock my phone. It was a very simple call to verizon global department. The regular call assistants are useless so make sure you get transfered to the global department.
you must have either used an xtc clip or called Verizon to be sim unlocked.

To check if the phone is SIM locked, do the following:
Secuity==>SIM Lock==> if there is a cell to enter unlock code then the phone is SIM locked, otherwise the message will be "The SIM lock Disabled" Good luck.
I am not sure about this but i do not think that is true for some phones because if you root and unlock it with some of the procedures here for some phones it still will do that but your sim is unlocked in the actual hardware and not a software unlock someone correct me if im wrong.

In order to switch to GSM you have to have an activated SIM card in place from a local provider (AT&T or T-Mobile); otherwise, the phone will not stay in the GSM mode and will default into CDMA.

[Q] Unlock Phone to Network (UK)

Hi
I bought my Galaxy Nexus from someone on ebay and I assumed it would have been an unlocked phone .. However after using it for 2 months, it was suddenly unable to access the network (Vodafone, UK).
After upgrading phone to 4.2.1 and changing SIM card, there was still no improvement. Then Vodafone informed me that my phone is "locked" to their network and I need an unlock code.
I have, since, purchased an Unlock code, but the device does NOT prompt me to enter an unlock code when the Vodafone SIM is inserted. The directions in the unlock procedure have been advised as below:
1.So... type *#7465625*638*
2.Then type YOUR UNLOCK CODE
3.Type #
4.Press ENTER or OK
I have no idea how to type a number in the dialpad and press "Enter" because the only option I have is to "dial" .. which leads me to a "no network" error.
At my wits end ... any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
thanks !
If it's a Vodafone phone then a Vodafone SIM should just work - the SIM lock would only apply to non-Vodafone SIM cards...besides, all Galaxy Nexus' were SIM-free AFAIK

I don't know what network the phone was tied to earlier .. but I bought it and was using it with a Vodafone SIM. It's not a Vodafone phone per se .. and I was quite sure my phone was a SIM-free unlocked phone anyways.
But the tech support team at Vodafone say that the phone is locked to their network.

[Q] HTC One V Sim-Unlock Help

First post, need some helpful advice
I have a HTC One V on Virgin UK networkwhich I need to unlock. I purchased an unlock code online as after researching, came to the conclusion it (as of yet) cannot be done for free.
Anyways, I inserted the new sim card and turned on the phone but I dont get any pop up message asking me to enter the code. All guides I've read say that this should automatically pop up. I done a hard reset but that didn't help. The SIM is definately detected as I can look at the details in settings menu.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Are you on a custom rom? I think you have to be on stock to sim unlock a phone with a unlock code.

Not using a custom rom, phone is just out of the box
If I boot the phone without sim and then insert the new sim I get the following message;
"Unable to detect your SIM card. Please make sure that your SIM card is properly inserted and restart your phone."
After reading about it,
Does the phone accept your non-Virgin SIM? Do you get network access?
Not every phone is carrier locked.
You may also want to try disabling the HTC Fast Boot option. It does make start up, slower but it forces the it to actually shut everything down. It should be: Settings -> Power -> Fast Boot
Option A) Shut the phone down, after disabling 'Fast Boot', make sure the non-Virgin SIM is inserted, turn the phone on.
Option B) Hard Reset/Factory Recovery with the other carriers SIM inserted.

Network Unlocking

Hi can someone please help me.. So i am trying to network unlock my phone.. I have already obtained the unlock code. But i have no idea how to input the code that i have without a non-tmobile sim... My phone is t-mobile.. Is there any way i can input the unlock code without a non-tmobile sim card??
If someone could please let me kno hw to it would be great. Thanks in advance
I don't think so. When you put in the other SIM card it triggers a prompt for the code. Easiest thing to do is borrow a friend's sim, or you can buy sims on eBay for $.99. Or just keep the code until you have the other SIM card for the other network you plan to use it on. If your not using it on another network the unlocking is kinda pointless.

What's your T-mobile model?
There is no other way to unlock without a non-T-mobile SIM as far as i know. You may follow the below instructions:
1. Switch ON your mobile with a Not ACCEPTED SIM Card.
2. If your mobile asks for a PIN code, then enter your SIM card PIN and press OK.
3. T-Mobile Affinity will ask to enter an "unlock code".
4. Your mobile is now unlocked.
I also followed these steps to unlock my mobile. I got the unlock code from TheUnlockArena.com here they provided permanent unlock code.

unlock without sim card?

At&t gave me an unlock code so my note 2 can be used in China. I don't have a china sim card yet. It seems I need the sim to enter the code. Is it possible to unlock without a sim card using the code att gave me?
No just get one of your friends TMO SIM and that will prompt for the unlock code!!!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk
Any non att card should work. I had tried to unlock with older nonatt simthat I cut down to the micro sim size to unlock
Alternatively you can just use the hidden menu to unlock which does need the sim unlock code and other sim if I recall correctly
