Right now, I have a rooted Epic with DK28 on it. I want to upgrade to either EC05 or maybe a gingerbread ROM. I've read through this site, watched videos posted by qbking77 and I think I have confused myself...
I think I can Odin from DK28 to EC05 but that will wipe all the data off my phone and I will need to reroot it? Then, if I root it again, I can restore stuff using Titanium Backup?
I have read stuff about going back to DI18, and then upgrading to EC05. Is there an advantage to this method?
And as far as I can tell, I can not go directly from DK28 to a gingerbread ROM?
There is no advantage to going to DI18 then upgrading to EC05.
The best method for you would be to use titanium backup to backup all your apps and settings, using ODIN to install a prerooted copy of EC05 then using titanium backup to re-install all your apps and data.
You can go straight from DK28 to a Gingerbread rom as long as you flash the modem in ODIN but I would recommend holding out for an official release if you like to have themes and custom kernels.
Thanks.
I need to root EC05 to be able to use Titanium Backup to reinstall everything, correct?
I can't read today. Where do I find a prerooted copy of EC05?
I believe this one is it
http://k0nane.info/rom/SPH-D700-EC05-8gb-REL.tar
If not it is pretty easy to just re-root it.
Thanks
Once I have EC05, I can install custom ROMs, right?
You didn't need EC05 to flash custom roms, just the EC05 modem and a compatible clockworkmod (since you were still on DK28 I'm assuming you're on an outdated version of clockwork too).
You could always Odin in the EF02 leak and have Gingerbread in one step. Then root and restore your data from Titanium.
Here is the thread for a prerooted EF02 leak ROM:

Prolly. I really have no idea. After spending some time messing around when I got DK28 and thinking I nearly broke my phone, I decided to just leave it alone for awhile. But now I am bored and want to mess with things again

This is me a month ago All I have to say is thanks to qbking77 I was able to properly upgrade my phone to EC05 and flash SyndicateROM 1.2. I believe he has a video for each of the steps you need to take (odin to ec05, root, flash, install/update cwm then flash desired rom and, if needed, kernel). I followed his tutorials exactly and have a faster, more responsive phone and aquired it with little risk. Big thx to XDA for the info, ACS for the ROM and qbking77 for helping a noob out ^ -^

Ok, so I have a MAJOR problem. Before the eb13 froyo update came out, I tried to get dk28 on my phone. As of current, my baseband is dk28 but my build is di18. I got my wifes epic to the eb13 from the manual update cause I didn't screw with her phone. But because my baseband is still dk28, I'm guessing atleast, I can't run the manual update to eb13 to complete. I don't remember what I did or I could just retrace my steps and go back to di18 for my epic. Could someone help me get back to di18 for my epic, the easiest way please, I'm kinda an idiot. Id really like to get the official froyo on my phone. Thank you in advance!

be careful from odining the new modem alone and make sure you have a nandroid backup, i ran into system uid is unstable and got unlimited force closes, then nandroid restored then i had the new modem.
I did my research in and out of XDA w/o finding specific method on how to go about doing this :s From what I've read in these forums I found 2 different files from k0nane that, according to the people that posted them and my limited knowledge of this, lead me to believe that it will do what it is I am asking. One is "k0nane.info/rom/SPH-D700-EC05-8gb-REL.tar", and the other is "k0nane.info/rom/acs-ec05-modem.tar". (being a new user I can't directly link to the files)
I would like to know which one is the one I need to make my phone EC05. Now that summer is here I'm interested in installing ROMs, themes and trying to brick my phone ^ .^ Thanks in advance
PS: If it isn't too much of a bother, where in Odin does one place a .tar file? I've only used Odin a few times a while back; last time to put DK28 on my Epic :3
You used the first one you named. You put it in the PDA slot in Odin.
The second one is only the EC05 modem, which is pretty much the "radio firmware".
Just know that Odin does wipe out everything on your phone except your SD card.
Is there a way to upgrade from DK28 without wiping your phone?
My phone is rooted and I have CWM v2.5.1.
I have Titanium installed.
Thanks.
Search the forums for user qbking77 I think is his nick he has excellent videos on how to use odin and other stuff. I have links in my sig too but not sure if my sig shows well using xda premium.

Is there a rooted version of EC05 that will work directly from DK28 without having to go back to DI18 and lose everything? Or is there a way to backup apps and restore after ODINing ?
you can backup everything with titanium. Apps, data, contacts.. everything.

So just to be sure....
1. Titanium backup
2. Odin to DI18
3. Upgrade to Ec05
If I have CWM 2.5.1 is it necessary to upgrade to latest version?
Is step 2 necessary or can I go directly to EC05?
Thanks again
U can get the stock ec05 tar here

So after ODIN a rooted phone, root privileges will be gone? So I will have to re-root?

Did you attempt the manual update zip via flashing it in CWM?
Did you flash a custom GB based ROM?
Thanks.

If you followed the instructions right, you've already hosed what was previously your "stock" rom.
First, did you make a backup?
If so, wipe and restore.
If now, flash a new rom.
Did you already update the modem?
If its still on EC05, flash an EC05 rom.

MY PROBLEM IS THat i cant even get it to show up on odin!
You don't Odin to flash a rom, so that's beside the point right now.
Don't get flustered here, I am trying to help.

Dude, just restore your nand backup.
If you want to go back to stock and become unrooted, go to youtube and search samsung epic return to stock. Watch qbkings video. You will need the ec05.tar file, samsung drivers for your pc, and one additional file that should come with odin, and a valium. There are turtorials everywhere around here, but for step by step "easy" instructions, use qbkings video.

Two options if odin doesn't see your phone. Try a different cable I bought mine at staples 15 dollars for a better 6 foot cable. Second option is remove the battery hold down 1 and power insert battery. That should get you back in. Then odin to stock ec05. Find a rom of your choice like randomrom thunderhawk. After it installs use the ec05 to ei22 modem flash. That is the method that I upgraded worked like a champ.
If odin doesn't see your phone, try disabling your antivirus and firewall that was causing me problems a while back with Norton I think.
Hi guys,
I'm running a rooted nightly CM7 build, and it's really great, however I've heard some really good things about the EL30.
I have two questions.
1. How can I get from my current build to EL30? Do I need to odin? If so can I get some links on what I need to do.
2. I forgot :S.
Thanks
Steps:
1. Find odin 1.85 it should be in the restore a bricked epic forum as well as the ec05.tar
2. Use the instructions and odin back to stock ec05, once on ec05 get on wifi and mess around till the prompt to update to ei22 comes up and install it.
3. Once on ei22 ill link you the update.zip you can flash in the stock recovery and you'll be good to go.

What possible goods things have you heard about EL30 that you don't have on CM7?
UPDATE: If you're currently on an ICS rom and need to go back to a GB rom, just follow the instructions on this page. I chose to use the "SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-oc-sfx.exe" self extract file, which clears all user data. This didn't wipe my pictures and videos that were on the internal memory. This will take you back to a rooted EL29 GB rom. If you want CWM, you can then follow the instructions provided by the amazing QBKing77 in his walk-through video. Thanks to everyone below for their help in clarifying the process!
Hey guys,
There have been a lot of bricking stories going from ICS back to GB roms, so I want to be absolutely sure I understand what I need to do in order to get back to a GB rom. It sounds like my only option is to use ODIN to install a GB rom, correct? I'm currently on the unofficial CM9 test build, but want to get to the CM9 alpha 1 rom.
Do I basically follow the instructions in this thread using the one-click file that resets user data? This will completely wipe my phone and get me back to the rooted EL29 rom, which is GB based, correct?
Sorry for the stupid question, but I hope that once this gets answered, others will be able to find this info helpful as well. Thanks!!

That's what u want. Flash the full restore (not no data) though Odin and you're back to stock el29 rooted.

You can even use mobile Odin and flash tar the pro version will leave you rooted also ....I do it this way then flash cwm el26 kernel in mobile Odin and restore cm7 & then flash aokp , cm9 , codename etc takes a little longer but no bricks this way

Of course!
Guys,
Thanks again for your help. I went ahead and ran sfhub's one-click ODIN using the SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-oc-sfx.exe self extracting file, and everything went smoothly. I'll update the op for future reference.
You are doing it right. sfhub actually spent the time and put together a one-click that includes CWM! "SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED_CWM-OneClick.exe" [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23521848&postcount=377] when we started having all the bricking. As was already mentioned using his one-clicks are the absolute safest. And as was also mentioned they work in Mobile Odin, though I would rather use the PC, it's good to have that option incase the USB gets 'locked' out. Just read the part about the triangle and how to remove it. That Dude is a life saver. Thanks sfhub and all you other devs.
