finally taking the plunge and swapping to gmail as Google+ apparently needs a gmail account.
Ive done this through google itself (on the google mail site) so in theory its all done for me ... but what about my phone/tablet ? these are still set up as googlemail. Do i need to change these ? if so whats the best/easiest way ?
Googlemail accounts work just fine.

Googlemail = Gmail. Gmail = Googlemail. Samething.
cheers ... just wasnt sure if i needed to change anything on my phone as it still says googlemail
I have seen yahoo.co.uk address sign up - as long as they are associated to a google account then its fine

I'm still confused about syncing contacts. I have a Desire on Orange. I have a gmail account, and I use the htc mail app and connect to my gmail account using exchange. I sync my contacts to my gmail account using `google/sync contacts` from the sync page, and I sync my mail using `exchange activesync`. I do this because I can see/edit my contacts via the web gmail page (which is easier/faster than doing it on the phone), and because the mail app is better than the gmail app. But it seems that I have some contact information on my phone which is not visible via the gmail website. To pick one example, it's showing as a `linked contact` between 'exchange' and 'google'. Can I see my exchange contacts online? Where are they? I want them in one place, so I can back them up occasionally (I've already lost my contacts once as I set my phone up). It would seem to make sense, given that some contact info appears to be on exchange somewhere, to have them all there - then I can stop syncing with 'google' on my phone altogether, but I have to be able to see/edit/back them up first.
I've tried googling for this, but all I see is Googles own pages for other platforms, non-free apps to do exchange etc etc.

I have the same issues too
Well i don't use exchange, but i can say how i use my gmail sync:
I use Sync/google account on the definitions menu to sync my google calendar, contacts and mail.
This allows me to use mail on gmail app (not htc mail app), calendar on android calendar (i can use htc calendar widgets) and manage online contacts.
Since i previously added my "phone" contacts to phone memory and to a group on google contacts, they have linked to each other and i can mantain an online and local copy of them (this is great to add a hi res picture to contact, since i add the picture to online and local and then choose local picture to be displayed).
I do know that some fields from online google contacts and local contacts are different, and i think this is as stupid as the picture not having quality on google contacts online, but i hope they would solve it in a near future.
I hope that from now on, since google is saying that the BIG changes on Android are done, they will spend some time dealing with the little details that can be very annoying...
Same issue here.
Sync of Contacts
Google-Contacts -> Desire: works
Desire -> Google-Contacts: dosent work
If i try to add or change a birthday on the phone it does not arrive theo google-contacts account. The other way works. Biggest issue on this fine phone.

Hi, that issues are from Android and Gmail and not from the Desire.
You should add birthday dates to Google contacts or else the synchronization wont work well, but i do agree these are major stuffs that really annoy me!
There could be an interesseting thing.
I have Software-Version 1.15.XXXX (T-Mobile, rooted Phone) and i found an O2 User with 1.20.XXX - he said it works at his phone.

Uau! How can he have an 1.20.xxx? I have unlocked Desire also with 1.15.XXX and no updates for me!
Well I now have 1.21.405.2 updated from ota.
Sorry if this has already been addressed, my searches didn't find what I was experiencing.
I'm not quite sure what's caused this though I believe it may be due to removing the HTC mail widget off of my screen but now when using the HTC mail app or widget my Googlemail account and emails have disappeared along the option for setting up a new Google account. The Google mail app works fine and I can see the email is still being synced by I have no idea where this feature has gone from HTC's Mail app
Any ideas aside from hard reset?
In the mail app you select POP/IMAP and just put in your Google account details. It'll set up the servers and ports automatically.
After updating to the most recent Gmail app version(2.3.2), i seem to have lost the auto complete function while typing email addresses that are not stored on my phone.
I run two email accounts on the phone, the primary account which syncs contacts, works fine since the contacts are synced on the phone, but the secondary account, which used to do an online lookup(no contacts sync), does not auto complete anymore.
Anyone else have this problem with this version of Gmail?
Thanks
Can anyone please clarify if this app is supposed to auto complete addresses that are not stored locally

Hi..
Anyone know how I can get my Desire to support my google account? It seems to allow only [email protected] google accounts, but my account uses a non google email address...
Thanks...
I didn't know Google offered other domains, only Google.com and googlemail.com.
What is yours?

A lot of businesses and colleges use gmail but use it under another domain name. If you are talking about the phones gmail or calendar app you set it up as like normal under settings but enter the enter in entire email... like [email protected] that worked for me.

Hi...
Google doesn't offer other domains that I know of. My google account is via a non google email -- my pre-existing email address that I've had longer than Google has existed! Most android devices allow you to sign in to a google account with any email address. The Desire will only allow an [email protected] address.
I contacted HTC support and they said "open another account". Yeah, that's really useful, as my play.google apps won't be there (google won't merge 2 accounts) and my calendar won't sync (the Desire calendar won't see anything other than the primary account calendar).
So this renders much of the phone useless -- unless someone knows how to bypass this stupid HTC limitation....
Would installing a clean Rom, without the HTC additions solve it?

Thanks -- good idea. A clean rom install allowed me to get the accounts working fine!

it was the same for me, now i can login with my hotmail adress and my gmail adress to the same account.

I'm hoping this is possible.
So on my personal phone I always use the gmail App for my accounts.
I just recently started working for a company that doesn't issue cell phones, but will set up your exchange account on your personal phone, so i've gone and done that.
Everything works fine, accept the Exchange account is accessed through the Stock Email app, and it is also synching my 2 gmail accounts. Is it possible to remove the gmail accounts from the Stock email app? I've gone into the app's settings and I can't see anything to remove them. I can see the option to stop the sync, but that does me no good for whats already been synced.
Any tips?
