Editing build.prop - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

SO...I flashed to EF02 and now I am unable to use the Total Protection App. Each time I open it I get the message "Unsupported phone: Please check www.sprint.com/protection...blah, blah, blah". The only thing I can think of is that the portal does not recognize an Epic with Gingerbread to be supported. I know where my build.prop is; I've backed it up, and I know how to edit it. My question is WHICH LINE do I edit. There are over a dozen lines that say EF02 or GINGERBREAD. Do I need to edit all of them, or just one or two which the TEP program will only be looking at? If I do, should I change them all to EC05 FROYO, or has the TEP app worked with EE03? As with all system changes, I don't know enough about this issue, so I'd rather ask the stupid questions than brick my phone. I won't change anything until I'm 110% sure it will work.
radugb out

find the section that looks kinda like that but replace it with this.
Code:
ro.build.description=SPH-D700-user 2.2.1 FROYO EC05 release-keys
ro.build.fingerprint=sprint/SPH-D700/SPH-D700/SPH-D700:2.2.1/FROYO/EC05:user/release-keys

What are u making here?...

i am picky, i know, but the stock rom (rooted) is 100% what I like. there is not one thing that doesnt work the way i like it to.... so.... on that note
ive removed all the sprint apps, update.zip and its rooted but i cannot get the darn thing to stop asking me about the update...

I believe you could just rename or remove the systemUpdater.apk and it would stop checking for updates
.. I think thats the correct name but if its called something else please correct me
Edit: I would just use Titanium and "Freeze" the system updater at first. but i think this is removed on custom roms anyway so shouldn't be a problem to remove it

well, im a big fan of the syndicate rom but it carries over what i dont like
the "google" search is slower than the stock search
the browser seems slower
messages in the "call log" annoy me
cant search in phone app by last name
keyboard seems to "miss" letters
except syndicate, dk and ce based roms just seem slower
if i could build roms i would and remove the carrier iq and add the extra functions when you hold down the power button.
btw, im a guy.... i need to change my sn lol
so, im going to just remove system updater, hope that works
I'm with you,I liked DK28 the best out of all 3 FROYO releases, and I actually had DI18 on all day today just to see what it was like again; And I forgot how damn smooth it was compared to this hacked-up **** we have right now,I know EC05 is young (and I plan on building EC05 still) but I'm making a DK28/EB13/EC05 ROM with no carrier IQ,and most if not all EC05 mods should work,I start on that as soon as I get off work.

What you listed doesn't make sense...
the "google" search is slower than the stock search It is the stock search.
the browser seems slower Fast and checkerboardless in SRF.
messages in the "call log" annoy me Not present in SRF.
cant search in phone app by last name Fair.
keyboard seems to "miss" letters Better than DI18 and user-adjustable in SRF.
I don't think you need to defend SRF kOnane... I think my problem is UV kernels, but I still can't narrow down the static/pops. But this is what I've seen sofar, when fast scrolling (scroll fast, then remove finger fast) no pops, but if I scroll with my finger on the touch screen the entire time,it pops like crazy ; Which makes me think its the touch screen driver,or interference on the bus when using the touch screen...

Porting Roms from *** To the Evo

I assume this is the correct forum otherwise please move this.
What is the best article(s) to read if you want to start learning how to port roms from other android phones to the Evo? I've been searching on here and on google and it seems most articles are either outdated or only talk about editing existing cooked roms so I finally broke down and posted this. Yes I do use Linux and I do program in Java and .NET and do have a bachelors in software development but I have just never looked into doing this type of work until now.
Thank you, any direction I'm pointed in is appreciated.
I'll direct to you the Q&A forum.
Side Note:This goes in General, but im nice so ill answer you question.
There is no real BOOK to read, a java book is a good start, but you say you know java, so you can probably skip that.
Basically, this is all you have to do.
Download "Dsixda's Kitchen" to your linux distro(amazing software)
Grab a rom from another device.
Grab one of our(evo)stock roms(deodexed Stock 3.70 is good for froyo port,4.12 for gingerbread)
Open the kitchen, and find the option(#19 i think it is), and follow the steps to port it(hold on, your not done yet)
From there you will need do some manual work by tinkering with libs, tinkering with the boot.img, bascally just tinkering with everything related to booting(libs,ramdisk,hw-libs,etc.) untill you can get it to boot or bootloop.
If it boots, thats great, if it bootloops, youlle need to logcat it then debug it.
If you need help with something, pm me, other than that, thats basically(*note: i said basic, more complexed roms like sense 3.0 and non-htc device rom may require extra work)(*note2:alot of times, its going to be a no-booter, but just keep trying.)

Don't forget some of the most important stuff is in the build.prop and update-script.
Word of advice, look at a sense 2.1 and check out the base that was used. You can also use beyond compare and basically skip Linux all together. Using kitchen to deodex the ruu is a good first step. Choose option 11 in the menu.
Personally, I would start off with a working port and changing apps and moving stuff around. Also get a good list at which libs are associated with what. But use stock bins, etc, xbin, hw libs, and ported apks, framework, and software associated libs. Stock boot.img and a good updater-script. Also know key
Things like the EVO density is 160, vold_stab is usb, amkd is rotation, gsl hw accel stuff like that.
But first things first, Google is ur friend and use the q&a section.

ah yes, forgot about build.prop, and i think the kitchen takes care of updater script(unless the device has specific mount pointsor you want text or to clear cache and system). i was just getting the basics to boot, from ther he can debug the errors out of the log.
What about something A LOT simpler like adding the CRT animations to a ROM? any pointers? Any TUT you can point me to?

I'm actually glad this thread is still here we don't get to learn much from the devs here. I mean its mostly do it yourself but a getting started guide isn't a bad thing. Mods are quick to move and people are quick to flame but I say leave it, where else is the knowledge pool? Can you really learn this stuff in Q and A seems like it would be mostly help my phone doesn't boot...

Check out the APKTool, APKManager threads. Lots of great valuable information in there.
I sometimes wish XDA focused more on the "HOW TO" and less on the delivery aspect. The more folks developing, the further we will be along
Another great way to get started is to mentor with another established developer.

Well said. People love to flame anyways and XDA is famous among other Android forums for being so harsh. This thread helped me out big time, and it's especially nice to see Leoisright and myn in here giving up a few pointers, because I too was curious about porting. I never worked up the confidence to ask, just too worried about it being passed over or getting flamed because I'm young and curious.

Many can, but for best purposes, why? You can have a lovely rooted, stock version that I believe they just updated. Otherwise look at qbking's vidoes on Odin/Heimdall to stock. No real reason to, unless you plan to sell or repair it.
When was this update?
And lately i havent been receiving any texts and was worried that it may have something to do with being rooted? idk..
and i know nothing about rooting/unrooting so when the day comes and i have to use my warrenty, id like to know how to unroot it.

Check the dev section, but not receiving texts may be an issue way easier than going back to stock. Also, be sure to state anything you've played with that makes you think it could be attached to s/u status. Lots of people will be happy to walk you through a variety of things that won't make you lose all your data.
honestly i love the whole rooted idea. I rooted my phone to use a screenshot app..but i feel like i can do more with it...the thing is..idk how. I wish i can get themes on my phone but everything seems so complicated. I probably wont unroot now...but since we're both here, any ideas on how to add themes to my phone? and maybe even reset to the default theme.

Did you flash a Rom after you rooted? What instructions did you go by? Be aware, it's 12:33 here and your questions may get differred to everyone else until morning. If you're on certain main Roms, you might be able to easily flash to either a new Rom or theme with little effort. This is where it can get tricky though and retracing your steps out loud will help people walk you to what you need until you get more acclimated to searching and "shopping" for what you what in here. remember your thanks, donations and verbal support, people like to help here

The Root is right. The word "brick" is used too much. I can only remember a couple of people actually bricking a phone thus making it useless. 95% of the problems can be fixed with Odin. I didn't know a damn thing 6 months ago. I had to Google "rooting your phone." Now I test ROMs,themes, and kernels for developers. I could never go back to stock now. Rooting really frees the phone to make it your own. Flashing ROM's, themes, and kernels is easy and if you have any questions, there are people like me that are glad to help. Also, qbking makes great videos if you are a visual learner or want to see the process before you do it.

[Q] looking for darkest market apk

im not new to rooting but after i have been running srf 1.2 for months, i wanted to try to look into a new rom. main problem? i miss my darkest market. it was just wayyyy easier to read when the screen was black and text was white. i cant remember who created this but i remember i had to flash it in cwm.
i hate the newest market style, with all the boxes and graphics and putting the apps into two columns. for now i installed a vending.apk which i believe is the market based off eco5. in titanium backup, says version is 2.12. i wouldnt mind the next big updated one bc this seems to run a little slow but idk and dont fallow into which version market i should find. i have had the darkest market installed forever now but i lost it after i cleaned my phone.
can anyone help me? wether its the darkest market file or guide me to the market version before it changed its UI. thanks

[Q] Sweep/puzzle unlock for Epic 4G like other variants?

Put it short, Epic is a decent device and I love it. But one thing I can't quite understand is its screen unlock (DRAG TO UNLOCK). I've checked out quite a lot of videos of other GS1 variants and of course seen GS1 i9000 around me and they all use the "sweep screen" unlock method. Well I know if I want more customizations I "OUGHT TO" flash custom ROMs (and I do, I seldom stay on stock) BUT times when I want to have a genuine Samsung feel I feel disgusted by E4G's unlock and want to "sweep" like other GS1s. Any workarounds (porting only the lockscreen)?
P.S. I'm on FC19 and decompiling the framework reveals "zzz_unlock_puzzle_xxx.png"s which stand for puzzle unlock (another common GS1 feature) and "zzz_unlock_arrow_xxx.png"s which stand for sweep unlock. Don't know how to enable them. Looks like Samsung has hid quite a lot of things from us (e.g. the hidden standard GS1 boot animation)
NOTE: MY ONLY PURPOSE IS TO LOOK AND FEEL AS "GS1-ish" AS POSSIBLE SO SORRY DON'T SUGGEST 3RD PARTY LOCK OR AOSP LOCKSCREEN.
Well, I'm not so keen on manually forcing the different lockscreens, but an alternative you could look into (if you so desire) is WidgetLocker. It's not native, but it allows you to customize your lockscreen! Sorry I can't be more help.
AOSP lock screen flashable is all over. Do a search for it and I am sure it is laying around. My TPR uses it. Puzzle unlock got broken in Gingerbread and was always buggy.

If I can bear 3rd party lockscreen then Xiaomi Lockscreen imitates "puzzle unlock" quite well. WidgetLocker is customizable but looks too lame.
But no, I literally won't bear ANY process in background other than SystemUI, inputmethod and current launcher. 3rd party's not my dish 'cuz just seeing them hanging around is annoying.

If I need AOSP looks I'd nandroid back to CM7. The only purpose I use FC19 is that it looks like GS1 and GS2...
And if it's "buggy" then it means there's a way to at least enable it, no?
I'm sorry, but I have to....
PUZZLE UNLOCK!!! My baby!! Come back to me!!
On a serious note, if you want to try this you'll have to be on either EC05(Froyo) or EI22(GB). The EI22 version was buggy though.
Anyways, you could always do something like:
Flash Legendary Rom RC 2.2:
and my Sony UI theme: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1370907 (for EI22, BML and MTD versions available)
This method is BML only.
Flash the stock EC05 froyo rom*: http://db.tt/k4FM5Oa7
*Note if you are on MTD, instead of flashing this, you need to Odin and repartition to EC05, then follow the rest of the steps.
deodex it by flashing this: http://db.tt/sBFyThTN
then flashing one of these themes to get the lockmod:

Why "sorry"? I'm glad to see at least somethin' really answering me!
But look I'm on latest FC19 and I don't want to be the old timer with E_XX gingerbread or even froyo ROMs. So since there are mods, there must be ways to add it. And based on the fact no one has the source code, I can say that mods are done at "decompile, mod, recompile, sign" level, no?
Then do I have a way just to try adding it to my existing FC19 installation?

If I need AOSP looks I'd nandroid back to CM7. The only purpose I use FC19 is that it looks like GS1 and GS2...
And if it's "buggy" then it means there's a way to at least enable it, no?

I thought that was the slide over to unlock you were talking about. And your welcome!
Zanderman's answer was what I basically said....it is not currently available for what you are running. Find Maddogin and see ifmhe will teach you how to make it happen.
