Defy crashes/ freezes/ causes network errors... - Defy General

Hi,
my defy is basically useless. It randomly freezes, reports network isssues, is super slow in the internet, looses wifi connection, doesn't recognise the sd cards, causes errors on the sd card etc.
I already reflashed Froyo CEE about 4-5 times, each time wiping/ formatting the sd card at first and after. I used different sd cards, all of them new, some class 2, some class 6 with different sizes.
Could I try another ROM ? Is the 2.2.2 3.4.2 002 179 Central Europe Version backwards compatible with the 2.2.2 ... 177 German version ? If so I would try that one...
http://and-developers.com/sbf:defy

I really need help on this please! I would try the other Froyo Version (the German one) and if that doesn't help I have to sell it as broken... It's a new Defy btw...

Anyone ? I'm really just about to sell it... tried everything!
Can I downgrade From the slightly newer CEE to 2.2.2 German Froyo ? They have almost identical version numbers...

You wipe the sd card? Boot to recovery by restarting then hold vol down +power. Then wipe data, wipe cache. Then flash again.

Try cm7

But I'm trying to figure out if my phone hardware is faulty. CM7 won't help me here.
I basically have 2problems: 1. random wifi disconnects 2. freezes
Now 1. could be related to my router, maybe I have to find different settings for it. 2. Could be related to any of my 78 apps installed so I'm currently trying to find out which one it is.
So far with a clean ROM I only got problem 1. but not problem 2.
*edit*
Ok I solved problem #1 (changes router settings to b/g instead of b/g/n), now I'm trying to figure out why I got constant freezes... However I did not get freezes with a fresh rom, so I guess it has to do with one of my apps, I suspect RootAppRemover, SetVSel, Autostarts right now...

[Q] Problems getting stable ROM

Phone was originally O2 UK, officially unlocked. Voda SIM
Rooted using Unrevoked (in OSX)
Radio 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
EDIT: Actually the radio reported as RADIO-5.10.05.23 in initial Recovery Hboot
I'm quite happy with clockwork recovery, wiping data (factory reset), cache partition, dalvic and do this between each flash attempt.
I've not loaded the phone with widgets or apps. Just ChompSMS, gMail, twitter etc
I'm having a real problem getting a stable ROM flash.
LeeDroid 2.2f (A2SD) was my first flash, boots fine, runs fine then seemingly random crashes usually resulting in O2 startup screen boot loop. Sometimes removing battery enables immediate reboot, sometimes when battery reinserted it goes into a tighter bootloop (O2 initial startup screen rolls round faster between boots). I really like the ROM and would love to get it stable.
Defrost 6.1 : Boots, allows me to complete the initial setup, then locks up solid as soon as it moves to the Homescreen
OpenDesire 3.0.6 : Seemed OK till I just rebooted it, then it froze at the ANDROID logo boot screen
I'm starting to wonder if it could be the SD card. It's an 8gb, only class2 - Have a class6 on order
If I wanted to return this to the standard would I flash an O2 or a Voda HTC Desire Sense ROM. The original ROMS I've seen for download aren't rooted and contain Radio - is this an issue ?
I just want to get this phone stable, I can't trust it and have had to switch back to iPhone3GS !
I think the SD card is the issue. Class 2 is just to slow. I assume you use an ext3 partition. If think that if you update to at least a class 4, you will be fine.
This is because a lot of apps run from the SD card. And when the card is to slow, android will crash. This happend to my brother when running android on his HD2 from the SD card. When using a faster card everything was stable.
Thanks, I'll put up with it until my class6 arrives. Seems a little better running latest OpenDesire, but locked up solid today just using (standard) Web Browser, battery out, 2 tries to reboot it.
If no better what RUU do I need to use to restore the phone?
Would it be an O2 one as that's what the phone originally was, and what the initial boot scren still is. A voda one as thats the SIM in the phone or just a generic Euro HTC sense one ?
TIA
Leedroid will be stable with the stock sd card and ext partition, so a class 2 should not cause the problem.
Are the 'random' crashes during heavy load or really random? If it's under heavy load you might have a faulty motherboard.
If you want to unroot you need the RUU that matches the software info from the original O2 rom.
They appear to be quite random, but I'm not sure what's going on in background at the time.
However they all seem to happen when doing network (3G) operations. Last one in LeeDroid was after scanning a product barcode using Barcode app. Previously it was sending/receiving SMS, Browsing etc.
OpenDesire (APP2SD) never rebooted, that ROM just locked up requiring a battery remove.
I've now updated to Modaco r9 rom without APP2SD which failed initially (it included an older radio). I updated the radio to latest version and so far I've not had a reboot crash or a lockup (touches wood). I've stuck with the Sense Launcher, rather than trying Launcher Pro, which I prefer.
So all the ROMS I tried previously had APP2SD, the seemingly stable one I'm running now hasn't. The EXT partition on this card was created using ROM Manager. When I get my next card do you think it would be worth creating the partition using Linux (I'll boot a VM of Ubuntu) or does Rom Manager do the same job.
TIA

[Q] HD Roms crashing / freezing / restarting

I can not install a HD rom on my partners Desire without it either locking up / freezing in use, power button to unlock the phone will light the buttons but doesn't power the screen or phone just restarts. Stock rom has run perfect for near a year never any issue and I have been running Starburst ROM with DATA2SD for 24 hours without any problems.
It seems that HD roms just won't work!??! It feels like CPU/GPU hang ups perhaps from the different voltage/clockspeed they use? In any case here's what I did maybe I'm missed something.
This is a launch desire locked to T-Mobile with all the latest updates. I have rooted the Desire using the latest unrEVOked and there has been no problems with this. I partitioned and formatted the 4GB SD card to 2.2gb FAT32/1GB EXT4/300mb EXT4/125mb Swap using gParted and full wiped all (data, cache & Dalvik) of phone using clockwork recovery 2.5.0.7 and installed SupeROM v2.0 D2EXT. This wouldn't run for very long at all without locking up or restating.
So I wiped all and installed SupeROM v1.5 D2EXT and this was the same.
So I tried another SD Card and problems were still there.
Reformatted SD Card to 2.2gb Fat32/1.5gb EXT4 using gParted
Wiped all and installed SupeROM v2.0 D2WE this ran for longer but would still restart or lock-up.
Full wipe again and installed RCMIXHD v3.0 D2WE This would last the longest but would still lock up or restart phone.
Deleted all partitions on SD card and formatted it all to FAT32 restored data and Nandroid backup so phone was back to a rooted stock. Phone ran fine for hours.
Installed Starburst ROM with DATA2SD and this has been running perfect for near 24 hours uptime.
Any suggestions?
Just to add I've rooted my Desire and Installed SupeROM v2.0 D2EXT without a problem and that runs perfect.
1.5GB ext4 partition is generally too big. Maybe the SD isn't class 6 and can't run Data2SD right. Maybe an explanation of why it isn't running right.
I used a two SD cards with various partition formats and sizes the lock-ups are still there.
Something else I've noticed is that each time the phone restarts the date/clock resets to 00:00 6/01/1980.
Maybe just a bad flash of the rom. Reflash it without a wipe and see if it helps. Try another rom to see if it's hardware issue.
Tried a few roms and the only ones that don't lock up the phone are the non HD roms. I think it could be hardware fault, but it really does run fine with stock rom and starburst rom so I at a loss as to what hardware is at fault, since surely the hardware would cause problems with non HD roms.
I'm going to keep trying different roms and see which works best. Could be all irrelevant soon once an official GingerSense rom is released.
I have the same problem (black screen with lighted buttons) and I have seen it with official 2.2, starburst 1.3.3.1 and 1.3.3.3 (data2sd 0.7 and x1). Could be a hardware fault. Can I be so unlucky? I have already had it for service for overheating-bootloop
Cool HD v9 DATA2SD works with no problems. It's a HD Rom and it's very stable and very fast so it does the missus.

Are you experiencing any lag? Especially with Sense frequently reloading itself?
I'm not, no. It's really quite stable and a very smooth rom.
Sometimes custom skins crash and revert back to standard sense skin but the phone is still usable.
try to flash a RUU. Then root your phone again etc
It had solved many problems i had before.
Hope it helps you.

[Q] Random restarts

Hello,
I'm experiencing random reboots with the custom roms I'm trying out. So far this is happening with SGBS 1.1 and Cool VisionS v7.
The reboots happen when I use the phone, could be while playing music, using maps, or a task manager. Sometimes the phone is stable for a day, sometimes it reboots every few minutes.
Always wiped everything before installing the rom, and also tried wiping after to try to solve the problem. Also, reinstalling the roms didn't help.
What could be the cause (and solution)?
Poor hardware.
my sense UI also keeps restarting, gingerburst rom... 1gb data2sd

What do you mean? Poor quality SD card?
Tried the stock Desire Froyo rom and now also getting restarts. Happens during installing stuff from the market now. Everytime I try to install something from the market, the phone restarts after a few secs.
Any idea?

to be honest though I had some random restarts awhile back - happened about after 4 days or so - but it went away after a few reflashes

U just messed up something, try also to reformat ur sd card from ur phone (first do a backup of the sd card content)
my Desire suffered badly from random reboots and the only way it was fixed was with a warranty repair with HTC. They replaced the main board. For me just using maps was enough to send it into a boot loop
Thanks for the replies. Turns out that a repartitioning and reformat of the SD card did help. A MB replacement may not be necessary if things keep working like they do now.
Thanks!
I had in the last days same issue and i sent my device to the service center. They changed my motherboard. It's hw problem bro, send it to htc, good luck

[Q] InsertCoin 1.1.1 A2SD+ Stock HBOOT crash - hangs

Dear fellow Desire owners,
i really like my InsertCoin rom but it's getting on my nerves lately. It crashes or hangs frquently. I see the lockscreen but nothing happens except when I pull the battery.
This has been happening more and more. Sometimes I notice my phone has been hanging for an our or so. I then have to remove the battery to get it working again.
I first thought it was the radio so I flashed it with version: 5.17.05.23 but things are getting worse. This morning I had to use the navigation but it kept hanging. At last I reverted to a NANDROID backup I made a week ago.
My question now is: how can I find out what is buggering my phone? Is there a log or an app that can do some troubleshooting? Is it an app that makes my Desire so miserable? How can I know this? Please help me.
Thanks!
Go back to stock rom to find out if it's the rom. If problem persits, call HTC.
TouchPaled from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
Before you reflash again your Desire, you can check and format your sdcard.
Or change a new sdcard and faster speed.
If the same issue, it might be hardware issue on Desire.
Because I used IC ROM from 1.1.0 to 1.1.4, every version is so far so good.
So what you're saying basically is that there's no way of checking logs or troubleshooting or whatever?
So I did a full whipe and installed v1.1.3. Which went well for a week or so, but then it started crashing again on a daily basis.
I went ahead and bought myself a class 10 8GB sdcard. I just copied everything and did a nandroid restore. See if that works... And if that doesn't do the trick i'll try a full wipe and fresh install again.
Same problem
Hi,
I have exactly the same issue, could you give me the result of your experience with your new sd card ?
It's an old post but I would like to have an answer to my problem.
Thanks
All versions of insertcoin Rom were perfect... What class card do u use???
I use class 4... Works perfectly.....

[Q] Help me figure out what happened to my phone? Poor signal/battery/wifi ect

It all started with errors playing music and movies off my SD card, then it I had trouble flashing Roms / or backups from my ext SD card. When these i/o problems with my SD card started so did my poor battery life, os lockups, very poor cell signal, and wifi was weaker but not as bad as the cell. The phone is almost useless for using data or making calls.
I did some digging and I found others who has this problem and it was the 32GB scandisk SD card that was at fault. I had the same card so I removed it, it seemed to make the unit better didn't lock up anymore, but my signals are still horrible. My wife also has a sprint S3 and right next to each other she always has more bars than me now, I'de say her signal is ~10dbm better than mine. Another symptom is when I plug in my MHL adapter my data and cell signals goes to Zero and dont come back till I remove it.
I dont flash roms to often I've been running the people rom for months now till this happened then I tired a few others.
I have tried 4 diffrent roms pure stock, rooted stock, the peoples rom, and CM 10.1 rc4. I have tried 2 radios MB1 and MD4.
I have also been running without any Ext SD card at all.
Any ideas? Thanx in advance!

Forgive me for the simple question, but what type of wipes have you been doing between Roms? Factory Resets, /system, caches? It's possible a clean flash (after wiping /system, /data, and the caches) will help with some of your issues.
There are also build.prop edits you can make that have helped some people. I don't have a link to them, but I'll start digging.

Good question, but I did try factory reset, and wiping everything. I even formatted system and all internal data to try something. I normaly use TWRP so i tried once in clockwork.
The first thing I would do is resolve the issue with the SD Card. If it is a SanDisk as stated in the OP. Go to the SanDisk website and make a Copy of the Post on their site admitting to the issue with SD Cards. I believe it was only on the Ultra Cards, but I would double check. Go into the store you purchased the SD Card, and show it to them. They should exchange it for you no issues. The reason I say this, is because it's what I did at Best Buy. They gave me no problems whatsoever. I then would suggest you download the latest MD4 Firmware/modem/baseband from HERE, and Flash. Then Update PRL / Profile. After that DL the latest TPR v3.17. Since you mentioned that is what you are using. Do a FULL Wipe : System, Data, Dalvik Cahce, Cache, and Factory Reset. Then Flash the Rom. Let it settle before adding any apps. See if all your issues are gone. If they are add back your Apps. I would avoid restoring Data as much as possible. Especially for system apps.
Usually sometimes, its the phone being dinky too, ( Back screws not on tight, Random hiccups while the phone is on with 700 mb + Ram Avail etc )
Sometimes its hungry apps hiccuping your phone, I suggest using Greenify to put some high ram apps not needed into hibernation mode.
There's a few 3g / wifi speed tweaks you can do in the build.prop settings as mentioned above.
The same happened to me as well on my S3, My SD Card is a patriot 16 gb class 10, But sometimes it'd be kinky and read
write copy or move files at 5mb 3 mb and even lower. When I do Nandroids it'd use to be 2 mb - 4 mb speed.
There's also SD Card tweaks you can do via Rom Tool Box, giving it 2048 kb.
My GPS doesn't even lock on, even on Stock ICS and JB Roms, I would have to keep reflashing the same rom until i'd get an insta lock on GPS.
Or just plain formatting your SD Card using the PC and then putting it on your phone.
And another one is turning off or freezing Sprint Connections Optimizer, That tends to get quirky with your
phones signal, trying to find the closest tower for 3g,4glte, connecting to strongest last remembered wifi etc.
And sometimes if it's worth your time, use an app that recalibrates your radio signal. That sometimes works for
me. Around my area, im usually getting -65 to -74 dbm, and sometimes when i get lucky, -94 dbm after recalibrating
the phones radio + updaing Profile and PRL.
What I did to fix what issues i had was doing a Odin OC full restore to stock MD4 with full data wipe.
Re-Rooted, flash TWRP Rec, Delete Davlik Cache / Cache 3x times, turn off the device. Pull the battery for 10 minutes.
Re-tighten the back cover screws, Put the battery back in, Re-boot into recovery, Re-Do Dalvik Cache / Cache Wipe 3x times.
Then Reboot.
My SD Card is now read and writing at 10/11 mbs. My Radio signals are around 85dbm ( Its still quirky going from 70-90 )
and the only time my phone hiccups is when my phones antivirus does it's autoscan or any of my apps of that matter
auto updating.
I know this isn't much info but if it helps the least tiny bit, at least that's a start to refreshing your device.
