Ok, going to follow the SimpleRoot OTA 1.47 how-to, but I have a few questions first.
How do I back up things like my Contacts?
What the latest "radio" and how do I check and get the newest?
How do I wipe caches? Or will the SimpleRoot guide tell me?
Any ROM recommendations? I was thinking of just trying Fresh.
Do I need to do any adb setup prior to starting?
I have been reading through the guides, but there is SO much info here, it takes too long to get through it all. Plus, I'm not even sure of all the questions I need to ask!
Thanks in advance for any and all help!
1. Use Titanium Backup. It will back up whatever you want, I backed up EVERYTHING (apps + system data) and it brought back all my settings, texts, even my scenes. I had to use Unrevoked on my 1.32.651.6 stock build to install TB, followed TheBiles "Idiot-Proof" guide for that part.
2. The radio is the baseband. I actually never flashed mine, and I haven't had issues, but I don't use 4g so I wouldn't know how that works. There are links to a few radios here, but otherwise check the thread or webpage for the custom ROM you want to flash and it might link to the recommended radio.
3. Wiping caches is done through recovery (Amon RA, Clockwork, or using ROM Manager from within a rooted ROM). You do it right before you flash the custom ROM. SimpleRoot will just root the phone, then you'll want to install ROM Manager and use that flash your preferred recovery (that's a whole separate debate).
4. I've been reading up a lot in the last day or two, and Fresh seems to be very popular. I'm using it right now, no problems so far! I've used DC, I had a couple of issues, CM6 is cool but still changing all the time. Go with Fresh at least to get your feet wet. Follow the guide that flipz provides in his Fresh thread.
5. I didn't use SimpleRoot, I rooted manually using ADB. If you're comfortable with using a terminal/command line (or at least typing and following directions) ADB might be a good idea. But if SR gives you a full-root, you don't need ADB at all. It's basically just a telnet connection to your phone.
Hey, whatdya know? I answered them all! There may be better answers, but I think this is all correct. PM me if you need more help, or I'll subscribe to this thread for a few days. I'm new but I'm learning fast and I LOVE this stuff!
Also, here's a good portal for you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709267
Titanium backup works great for most things but you have to be rooted to use it. Your contacts should be backed up directly to your google account if you have done it correctly. When you add a contact to your phone it will ask if you want to add it to google or as a "phone" contact. Make sure you save it as a google contact. Or you can go to your google account on your computer and sync all your contacts. I used SimpleRoot to get my phone started and then I went through this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915
That is where I started with everything.....fully unlocked and stock rooted with the newest radio. I also used Amon recovery from SimpleRoot instead of Clockwork. SR will clear all your cache, factory data, etc. Im running Damage Control ROM right now and love it. But it's fun to get your phone rooted and then just start using root apps and go from there. Oh, and the best thing for me about using SR and then going through the next thread I posted is that you dont have to use ADB. ADB is pretty simple but the SR + thread process took me about 25min.
Yeah, on that note, it's super-easy to just make a Nandroid or Clockwork backup of your flash, then flash something else to try it out. If you want to go back, just restore the backup and you're right where you were before.
And, of course, backing up contacts on Google is easier.
Running through the SimpleRoot and it got to Starting Part 2... and it's just hanging out doing nothing, been that way for a few minutes now. I didn't copy the PC36IMG file to the SD card, was I supposed to?
Will it bork anything if I disconnect, switch back to Disk Drive as the connection type and drop the file on the SD card? Do I need to do that? Am I retarded?
Not sure as I went through toast's manual method, but it shouldn't do any damage to start over. If Android is still running, I think the system will still be intact.
Well, I think I figured it out, sort of. I never got prompted to reboot into the bootloader until I disconnected the phone. Once I did that, it told me what to do. But, when I installed the update, the bootloader gave me this message: Main version is older, update fail!
Do I need to use the PC36IMG file for 1.47 now? SimpleRoot did push the PC36IMG file to the phone, btw.

i had the same issue, you need to make sure all the steps are complete before you go into step 4 and boot into bootloader...so make sure after pushing the files you finish step 2 and 4...it worked for me...my pc kept hanging on some steps so i tried it on a different pc and it went throught perfectly the first time around.
Uhh, starting to get a little worried here. I deleted the PCIMG36.zip file per the "Starting Over..." thread, and copied the su-2.1 file on to the SD card. Rebooted into bootloader, selected Recovery per the instructions, now I have a red triangle with and exclamation point and an unresponsive phone!

you're fine that's just telling you that you're in recovery mode follow the steps....it should tell you to run a command in you're command prompt which will get you into recovery and then you backup nand, wipe, and load image from sd card
Ah, OK. I pulled the battery and it came back to life. Didn't see anything in that thread about commands, but I will read it again.
just boot your phone holding power and volume up button and then when you see the white screen go down to recovery and press the power button...now you should be in recovery mode from there just follow instructions. you should backup nand, wipe cache and wipe data, and install rom from sd card.
That's the problem, following this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915, I don't get any instructions for the recovery portion that match what I actually get on the phone. I don't get the different menu so I don't get a chance to flash from the su-2.1 file.
Arrrgh! Here's what I did:
Replaced the PCIMG36.zip file that was in the SimpleRootOTA folder that I downloaded with the PC36IMG-1.47.651.1_eng-hboot_RA-1.7.0.1.zip file (renamed to PCIMG36.zip)
Ran SimpleRootOTA, followed all instructions
When I got to the place in Step 4 where I was supposed to be prompted to install the update at the bootloader, it didn't happen. I assume that this was due to the fact that I had already applied that update
I unplugged, looked in the root of the SD card, found that the PCIMG36.zip file had not been pushed.
I copied the file on to the SD card, rebooted into the bootloader, let it scan the PCIMG36.zip file and apply the update, then rebooted.
So, that's where it sits now. I'm out of time and can't do anything more with it, so I just re-installed MyBackup and am restoring apps and data.
Any ideas as to what I should do next?
Hopefully you are just transposing numbers in your post? According to the thread you linked, the name of file should be PC36IMG.zip....you are writing PCIMG36.zip....those are very different.
edit...and if you are getting stuck at step 4...that sounds like what you did.

ok if you has updated without any errors and you're rooted...
1)turn off your phone power it back on holding the volume down button and power button at the same time
2)when you see the white screen with HBoot menu scroll down using volume down button, highlight recovery and press power button.
3)you should now see a different menu (black&green) you are now in recovery from here:
4)select backup nand it will ask you to confirm hit power button and wait till it backs up you're nand
5)go down to wipe data...highlight wipe data hit power, confirm
6)wipe cache...confirm
7)load rom from sd card (you should have the su-2.1 in you're sd card) it will let you choose, choose su-2.1 hit power, confirm and let it finish.
you're done wait for the phone to reboot into you're new rom

Yes, I was just transposing digits, DERP.
I will try again later. Thanks for all the help!
Well, I just booted into the bootloader, it scanned the PC36IMG.zip file, but didn't do anything else but put me back at the bootlader menu. I selected Recovery, hit the power button, then black screen with image of phone and red triangle w/exclamation point.
No idea what's wrong or what to do now except pull the battery.

I remember this problem and I'm trying to remember what I had to do. It seems like after it scanned the PC36IMG.zip it asked if I wanted to scan and I had to say "no" and then after that I could boot in to recovery. I remember it being some dumb little mistake that I made like 2 times in a row and then had a "d'oh" moment when I realized why I kept getting the red triangle. Man, I'm gonna try to remember this and post later. Hopefully you get it though.
Hi guys, i am a newbie here.
Last night i was trying to root my desire using unrevoked. I followed the guide from XDA step by step and everything seemed fine until word "done" appear in unrevoked.
After that, desire supposed to enter recovery mode and clockworkdmod but there was nothing appear in the screen. My desire suddenly shut down.
Can you tell me what am i suppose to do then because i want to put custom rom in my desire and now there's nothing i can do because it can't enter recovery mode (it only able to enter bootloader or Android OS itself).
Thanks

when you are in boot loader, use the volume down key and goto recovery and git power button. you should then be taken to clockwork recovery. this is where you can select your rom from SD card and flash
I've tried to do that and now it stuck in HTC Logo. Doest it mean i've to try unrevoked again or simply unroot it?
try rebooting by taking battery off. i'm not an expert but you might have to do it manually using the guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
did you install the unrevoked drivers?
Okay i will try. Btw, in case i want to unroot, can you tell me where i can get "RUU_Bravo_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.19.707.7_Radio_32.36.00.2 8U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126179" ? The link from XDA seems down and i can download any.
Me and another member have encountered the same issue, seems there's some bug in HBOOT or something.
Boot into Android, go to Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset. Once you confirm it, it will reboot your phone into Recovery.
BUT, unless you re-format (partition) your SD Card, you won't be able to get back in again (unless you do the Factory data reset again).
This seems to happen randomly. Right now I can get into Recovery just fine. But once the bug occurs, the only way to get it to stop is to format your SD card.
Now i am thinking to unroot it than trying to do the whole rooting step all over again. Can you tell me where i can get the RUU for HTC Desire Asia

Here you go:

Okay, i've done unrooting with HTC Desire RUU Asi and what happen now my SLCD is brick. I am really hopeless right now because guide for "SLCD Brick" doesn't even work in my phone because once again my htc can't enter recovery mode ><
"I am trying to use the guide from sprinker right now. Hopefully it will work"
when you are in hboot the volume down/up button work?
Hi all,
I also have the problem that I can no longer enter the recovery mode on my desire.
Basically, whenever I am in the bootloader menu (either by pressing vol-down+power, return+power, or via ROMManager) and then select "recovery" I get right back to the "fastboot" screen.
I tried uninstalling/installing/upgrading ROMManager and also tried flashing clockwork via the newest version of Unrevoked (downloaded yesterday).
Nothing helps :-(
What I didn't try, yet, is reformatting my SDCard or resetting my device via "Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset". (I don't want to install all my apps >again<; I'm also a bit afraid that I break something an then cannot even reflash using recovery).
Here is some more info about my device:
- Flashed rom: Leedroid 2.1a
- HBOOT 0.83.0001
- RADIO 5.10.05.23
I would be really greatful if anyone had a solution for this problem.
P.s.: in case I HAVE to reset/format: can I somehow make a backup of all my apps&settings?
Hi all, I have the same problem now.
Everything works, after s-off, except I can no longer enter Recovery - any solution?
I didn't find an easy solution. I had to do the following (some steps might be optional but I wanted to be sure):
- Formated SD card (ext3 and fat partition)
- Complete reset via RUU (RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_T2_Radio_32.41.00.32U_4.08.00.09_release_137222_signed.exe)
- Using unrevoked to reinstall recovery rom
- Reinstalled my custom rom (Leedroid)
Now everything works.
BTW: via TitaniumBackup I could backup all my apps and data quite easily. Didn't expect it to work that well
thanks- what about s-off - is it working now for you?
"s-off" = ?
I Have a similar problem... I can't enter recovery. When i press "recovery mode", I just get a black screen with a phone and a "!" in it.
Have to pull battery to reboot desire.
I have formatted sd.
Quite annoying, cause I need to wipe my battery stats, and I don't know any other way to do it, than going to recovery.
I tried to update ROM to Cyanogenrom which was unsuccessful - just get boot loop.
I also get the same 'red triangle with exclamation mark on phone' icon when trying to go to recovery mode.
So now I have a Desire which boot loops and cant enter recovery mode ...
anyone know how to get out of this one?
This might work for you
WAIT, BEFORE YOU START, CREATE A GOLDCARD. IT IS VERY NECESSARY. THINGS WILL GO WRONG IF YOU DONT.
YOU MUST BE ABLE TO BOOT GO TO THE BOOTLOADER MENU.
Firstly, download this file. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13240777/Desire Downgrade.ZIP
Extract the files.
Run the win-down.bat file.
Follow on screen instructions.
After the process is completed, Head to the root of your SD card and check if there is a file named P99***IMG (FORGOT THE EXACT NAME BUT IT SHOULD BE SOMETHING LIKE THIS) there should be one.
Secondly, disconnect your phone and turn it off.
After that boot up your phone while pressing the volume down button and the power button.
The bootloader should be checking for files after awhile and once it found the file that is supposed to be in the root of your sd card, press the volume up button (NOT EXACTLY SURE, SHOULD BE THE ONE THAT SAYS YES AND CONTINUE)
It should be writing files to your phone. and replaces everything. E.G: HBOOT, RECOVERY,RADIO and such.
It should be writing files successfully and then it would ask you to reboot. Continue with the reboot and you should be having your Desire back to stock. Perfect.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THERE ARE RISKS INVOLVED LIKE FAILURE OF WRITING TO THE HBOOT. PLEASE REMEMBER TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. MAINLY, DO NOT BLAME ME FOR ANYTHING THAT GOES WRONG.
FINALLY, YOU SHOULD BE READING EVERYTHING UP TO HERE AND THAT YOU MUST HAVE A GOLDCARD (A GOLD SD CARD)
Hope this helps you and please ask if you have further questions. PM me if the questions cannot be answered here. Good Luck
This should bring back your phone to stock. Root your phone again after it is done
i have the same issue. but i got stuck when trying to partition my sd card. Now i can't enter Android itself only the bootloader. But i also lost my clockwork recovery...
it keeps looping the HTC Quitly brilliant bootscreen... Forever!
i am now formatting my sd card with my pc. will i then be able to go into recovery again using a zip file from clockwork i found? using this:
fake-flash
Fake-flash is only possible with root access, you need to be rooted to use it. Basically, its a way to have recovery running on the phone without using a PC (making it safer as you are less likely to brick using no USB cable to push files, instead, you push directly from your phone). You can use "ROM Manager" from the marketplace to do this. Simply place the downloaded test recovery image on the phone and the downloaded rom zip (renamed to update.zip) and flash using ROM Manager.
Preperation
Download the fake-flash update zip from one of the links below
Copy the update.zip to the root of your SD card (the name MUST remain as update.zip)
When you want to launch the recovery image
Turn on your device with 'volume down' pressed and select 'Recovery'
When the exclamation mark appears, press and hold 'volume up' then press 'power'
Select the second option, 'Apply sdcard:update.zip
That's it, ClockworkMod recovery should launch!

and then installing a ROM with it?
(sry for bad english)
i'm having the exact same problem. i've tried fake flash and it does nothing for me, so does flashing the clockwork recovery image. the only one i haven't used yet is the downgrade...hope that will help
Hi guys, I rooted my phone (2.1) using unrevoked, then flashed a new rom into OpenDesire.
When I go to recovery, phone is stucked with the HTC screen (need to remove battery).
What should i do?
thats a bootloop.. just find the RUU you were running before and flash!
hope this helps!
Hi,
Similar problem to some issues I had trying a variety of ROMs.
Something that seemed to work for me is reflashing the ClockworkMod (assuming that what your using) by using ROM Manager. I found that flashing an old version 2.5.0.1 then reflashing 2.5.0.7 seems to work. No idea what's going on but it's certainly a pain popping the battery.
Give it a try.
Regards
Colin

Hi,
I just bought a Desire today.
its
S-OFF
rooted
running leedroid v2.3d
thats all I know.
Im downloading the InsertCoin Sense 2.1 1.0.8 CM7 Rom right now.
How do I get things right without messing up my phone?
pls someone guide me how to install this rom propely and what's the required files etc2
Im really confused right now.
read a bunch of stuff here and couldnt find an answer
hopefully someone would help me out
thanks!
edit:what's the MD5sum for?
it says as a requirement on the insercoin thread that its either a
A2SD CM7 HBOOT - cm7 hboot from alpharev.nl - the one with 130 mB for /system
- 1 gB ext2/3/4 partition
A2SD+ STOCK HBOOT - stock hboot - the one with 250 mB for /system
- 1 gB ext2/3/4 partition

which one should I use/download?
the ROM that I downloaded has a md5sum of MD5: b7e9f7e7dc60b79874920dfcde50ac76
please please anyone?
MD5 sum is to chceck if your download was uncorrupted. MD5 of downloaded file must be identical to the one provided in ROM thread ALWAYS CHECK MD5 SUMS, if you flash for example corrupted hboot or radio it WILL brick your device
now, what you must do, since you are already rooted and S-OFFed:
1) make sure you have 1GB ext3/4 partition on your SD card, AFTER FAT32
if it is there, you are OK, if not use Gparted (bootable CD) to make one, mount SDcard in recovery and partition your SD
2) since you downloaded CM7 hboot version of insertCoin go to alpharev.nl and download CM7r2 PB99IMG then put it to the root of your SDcard and boot phone into bootloader (vol down+power) then wait until it finds the file and accept the flashing of new hboot >> this will change partition layout. [2nd method possible but you would have to have ADB @ pc correctly set up, which i doubt you have, so do it PB99IMG way CHECK MD5)
3) boot into recovery, wipe all, wipe dalvik and choose to flash downloaded insertcoin.zip
once it ends reboot, and after 15min it should boot up android, if not pull the battery cause smth didnt work out.
what could have gone wrong:
-your sd-ext wasnt done properly (double check or re-do)
-your recovery was outdated (report back here, i will help you updating it)
thanks for the response!
how do i check for the md5 of my downloaded file?
I have a clockworkmod v2.5.0.7
im downloading gparted now and will the files on to a disc after.
or can I use any partition master apps?like minitool or easeus partition?
please guide me how to partition it properly
its a 16gb kingston class 6
and how do i update my recovery just do be sure
edit: sorry for these noobie questions. I was really shocked how hard it is compared to flashing hd2s and defys
and yeah I have adb installed on my pc with the required files in it. the thing is I never used it. not even once sorry :0
anyway will try repartitioning my sd card now
you can check MD5 with program called HashTAB: once you install it, right click on file, choose properties and choose file hashes panel.
updating your recovery: find topic here on desire forums for clockwork mod 4.0.0.5 - if you download a .zip file you can use a fake-flash method which means booting into CWM 2.5.0.7 then choosing to flash CWM4.0.0.5.zip and this will launch new CWM, however you must do it every time you go into recovery.
if you want a permanent install of CWM 4.0.0.5 download its .img file, check MD5, put it into your androidSDK folder, put your phone into fastboot mode (back+power) and in windows command prompt (cmd) type:
cd X:/ANDROIDSDKLOCATION/tools [navigate to your SDK installation folder]
fastboot devices [this should give a serial number]
fastboot flash recovery FILENAME.img [.img file must be inside /tools folder]
and it will flash it permanently
you can find a video tutorial on how to partition SD in Desire Android Development sticky thread, its one of the first 3 or 4 threads, videos for noobs, all is there
also in thread tagged [TUT] you can find video on how to use ADB
I just partitioned my sd properly w/ gparted
downloaded the Desire_recovery-clockwork-4.0.0.5-j_r0dd_mod.zip
what do you recomend?fake flash or flash it permanently?
and could you please clarify this
2) since you downloaded CM7 hboot version of insertCoin go to alpharev.nl and download CM7r2 PB99IMG then put it to the root of your SDcard and boot phone into bootloader (vol down+power) then wait until it finds the file and accept the flashing of new hboot >> this will change partition layout. I downloaded the PB99IMG_cm7r2.zip, what should I place on the root of my SD card?the zip file or the .IMG file?then once I press vol+power I just wait then accept then it will install it?
then after that I just copy the nandroid backup onto my SD card and flash?
one more thing.
what's the best or recommended radio?
note:I cant connect to any data connection.either using 2g/wcdma,wdcma only or 2g only.
I dont know if it's the rom or what.hope its not a hardware issue though
My reception is always full by the way
note:here's what I did. placed the PB99IMG.zip on the sd then turned the device off then pressed vol down + power, a prompt asked for a update.I said yes then asked me to reboot. I answered no then went to clockwork recovery then flashed the insercoin rom after wiping cache and dalvik and factory data reset.rebooted the device and now im waiting for my phone to completely boot.
hope I made everything right
you gotta read more carefully dude
as i said, if you downloaded CWM.ZIP (ZIP FILE) FAKE-FLASH is the ONLY thing you can do with it. if you would have .IMG FILE permanent flasing from fastboot would be the only possibility. SOZ BOUT THAT !!! i just looked at this files, it is not flashable ZIP, this is an .img file packed into a .zip (LOL) unpack it, check MD5 Sum provided inside the .zip file and flash it using fastboot !!!
also some instructions taken from alpharev.nl (they are just under the table with hboots): You can also download the corresponding PB99IMG zipfile, put it on your sdcard, and rename it to PB99IMG.zip. Then start the phone in HBOOT mode (VolDown+POWER) to flash the HBOOT without a PC. It is however still necessary to either restore your nandroid, or reflash your ROM after doing this. The partition LAYOUT has changed, the actual data still needs to be 'moved'.
so rename the cm7r2.zip you have to PB99IMG.zip and put it on your SD (not in any folders) then go to bootloader with VolDown+Power, wait around 10 seconds and confirm flashing new HBOOT
after doing this, you cannot simply restore a NANDROID (if a ROM was made for stock hboot, it will not work on CM7 hboot this should be kinda obvious) you must flash a ROM designed form CM7 hboot so, for example InsertCoin CM7 (it is because on stock hboot system files are 250MB, and then on CM7 you have only 145mb, so restoring a NANDROID that had 250MB/system wont work, wont fit, wont boot)
i suggest you read full info available on www.alpharev.nl
best radio ? well i am an up-to-date geek so i always use the newest though you should be fine with any. if you encounter any problems though (with reception or wifi etc) you should consider upgrading your RADIO. however if you will change your HBOOT to CM7 (which is also treated as data++ by alpharev AND Ultimate Online Kitchen cause of the /cache size) you will be able to flash new radio ONLY from fastboot (it is also said on alpharev.nl :If you downloaded Bravo Data++, please notice the /cache partition is too small to hold Radio flashes from recovery. You can however flash the radio just fine with 'fastboot flash radio radio.img'. Just extract the radio.img from the radio update.zip beforehand.)
about data connection.
go into settings > wireless > acces points (you gotta find it, i dunno how are these named in other laungauges) and set up your APN correctly (you should find correct settings for your mobile provider on thier website, or just google it)

Alright so heres my issue. i soft bricked my htc desire hd. i have backups for my stock and cm7 on my sd card. but thats not the issue. every time i go to hboot it wants to update my radio b/c of the zip on my sd. updating the radio or not, it reboots right to the soft brick. so i cant restore any roms that were stable. any ideas to get past this?
Do u check for errors on eMMC? Maybe this is problem? (DHD and similiar phones, like Vision have eMMC chip, which like damage himself). On XDA you can find tutorial for check eMMC.
And next, what is version of your hboot, and radio which you want to flash are not older than existing radio? Maybe... You can try to flash via fastboot from ur PC, upload radio.img to folder with fastboot, open CMD, go in CMD to folder which have this files [for example, if u have this folder on desktop, in folder "fastboot", u should write "cd desktop\fastboot"], and next run "fastboot flash radio radio.img" [if ur radio file have radio.img name]
Sorry for my language. I'm very beginner in english, because im young, from Poland, and never learn english (only myself in home).
I writing this to get 10 helpful post, i have new tutorial for root and S-OFF Desire HD with 3.13.xxx software, which i can't root with any tools.

Sorry, I don´t actually get what the issue is. There´s not such thing as a soft brick..you are bricked or not. Anyway, just erase the PD98IMG.zip file in the sdcard, try to get to recovery and flash a custom rom. That should get you back to a working state...
Awwwww.... sorry, i misunderstood...
U DON'T want to flash radio...
Exactly as @up, you should delete all files what start name from PD98xxxx.xxx and go to recovery. Anyway, you can try to flash complete original ROM (BUT ONLY OLD VERSION!) via fastboot, should work
to be more specific..
how to i delete the radio update zip from my pc. the brick isnt allowing me to mount my sdcard..if i could delete the .zip then i could flash a cm7 backup..

If you don't have a card reader for your pc, you can remove the card from the phone until you get to recovery. After recovery starts you put the card back in the phone. Go to mounts and storage to mount the card. From there you should be able to restore whichever backup you would like.
