Hi there,
first: sorry for the 1.000.000th thread about the GPS sat fix on the DEFY, but I have tried several ROMs now and still have not found the solution for my problem.
The problem is: my DEFY does not get a GPS sat fix when data connection is turned off (e.g. roaming or turned off manually). In GPS Status I see up to ten satellites (in grey or sometimes yellow colour) but even after hours I do not get the fix. When I turn on the data connection (either 3G or wifi) I get the fix in few seconds.
I have tried several ROMs now from Froyo, over Gingerbread to now CM7 RC0, but all show the same behaviour. I have recently downloaded the GPS fix from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953630 but it did not help at all.
I have deleted the /data/location folder, reseted the aGPS data several times, nothing got better.
I feel like sending the DEFY in for repair but then Motorola will check it with aGPS and send it back unrepaired because everything works.
So, if anybody has a solution or hint I woul appreciate it very much.
Thanks in advance...
HMM !
Same problem here
it is true, without agps data, very difficult to get fixed. That's why we need agps.
I have CM7, with GPS Monitor Free and AngelDeath's GPS fix 1.2.zip installed, I am able to get GPS lock in couple minutes without any Data (on fresh restart).
Give it a shot
GPS Monitor does not solve the problem
Hi there.
@teruyume
GPS Monitor did not help, it shows the same behaviour as GPS Status. Finds many satellites but does not fix!
Can anybody check if he has data in the folder /data/location ? I deleted it as stated in the FAQ for CM7 and the folder is not yet recreated. Might this be a hint?
I really cannot tell what the problem is: good reception (10 satellites) but no fix.
I have also been having trouble with GPS on the Defy. It will get a fix very quickly but moving the phone will cause it to lose its fix. It will go from having a lock on 8/10 sats to 0/1 to 4/5, etc. It won't hold the lock for long. I tried AngelDeath's GPS fix 1.2.zip and that helped speed up fixes, but it still drops the fix if the phone is moved at all.
@hartmuna
I made a backup of /data/location and then deleted its contents (not the folder itselft). Then I got no lock at all. I rebooted the phone and it automatically repopulated the folder and began performing the same as it did before. You might want to create the /data/location folder and just leave it blank, then reboot the phone and see if it will populate it again.
I also took a look at location.cfg and noticed a lot of settings in there that might be worth tweaking, but I have no idea what they all mean.
I found the data/location folder with terminal, don't know why it doesn't sure vida astro. deleted it again but that doesn't solve the problem.
I think I might give official gingerbread 2.3.4 a chance after the weekend. hopefully this will help?!?
Does anybody have experience with the leaked 2.3.4 and gps?
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
I also had little problems to have the fix. And when I got (after several minutes) it loses during driving. The accuracy was too bad.
on CM7 rc1v2.
Anybody without GPS problems?
Hey guys, still no solution here. Tried every ROM out there.
One question: is anybody out there who does not have any problems with GPS fix without aGPS?
I am thinking of sending the DEFY in for repair...
With JBoogie3's blurry ginger rom I got 5 satellites used in fix in less than a minute (without internet). Try this rom before sending the DEFY in service.
same problem here, using last nighly and the problem still ocurrs, tried GPS-fix from angelofdeath but stil imprecise.
No solutions so far?
--
ive tried the GPS Monitor , he shows the lock, satellites, etc.. but, the gps with a "4 meters precision" put me on another street insted of mine, a mistake of ~50 meters (shows me on a paralel street instead of mine)
My standard Defy (still on Eclair) does fixes without Agps/data connection but after a trip of say 1000 km it can take up to 15 minutes to get a fix.
It also seems to help when I reset the Agps data first through GPS status (app).
GPS fix when not applying the UPDATE.ZIP
News from my side: I updated to CM 7 RC1v2 and this time did not apply the UPDATE.ZIP for my country described in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953630
And after few minutes I finally got a fix without aGPS data!
So my suspect is now the modified gps.conf. The original one is very short a has basically just the reference to the NTP and google aGPS server. The modified has far more lines that I have not yet studied in detail.
So, I will check the line of the gps.conf and try to find out what affects the GPS of the DEFY no to work...
Greetings from a happier DEFY user
That is good news. Would you be willing to copy/paste what is in your gps.conf file so that I can try updating mine without reflashing CM 7 and see if that solves my problem?

Sure, you will find the original.zip with the not modified gps.conf and then I installed the europe.zip from the above mentioned thread.
So far I am able to get a fix but for my patience it takes much too long. I am afraid that the GPS antenna of the DEFY is crappy.
Will do some more testing, any additional info is very welcome...

Hi,
Since I am new to the DHD I still do not know the correct way to get the GPS to work.
I have the GPS turned on, and I launched the Navigation app and it says "searching for GPS". It has been searching since the last 30mins without any luck.
Is this a hardware or software issue ? Anything I am doing wrong ?
MJ
You sat inside by any chance?
Yes I was inside my room but I was standing by the open window with the phone outside.

Ok, I have had similar problems and posted similar questions....
the first gps fix will take some time....the 2nd, likely a lot less...
What worked for me:
- I have setup gps to not work with network (wifi or 3G), this means it only uses the gps module....
to get a gps fix, especially in the car, it helps if you put the DHD near to the windscreen, so it is better able to pick up the GPS signal...
when I was inside my home, it took forever to get a fix, when I now put it in behind the windscreen, my DHD with silicon case gets a fix in about max 1 minute....if I use the Wifi or 3g network it is even less....
hope this helps
Try the miui site gps fix
http://www.miui-au.com/howtos/faster-gps-fix/
It works extremely well for me, and i do it every time i flash a new rom.
You could also try
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1252011
I don't see that much of a difference, but i guess its because i don't have a network connection on most of the time.
You can also try different navigation software. There are heaps of free ones on the market, and they seem to get a much faster GPS lock (Than google or HTC navigation).
I just realised that this thread was from ages ago :/
I'm also not too sure how i got to this thread in the first place...
Get gps fix or gps status & toolbox from the market to lock
Sent from my HTC Desire HD A9191
try a few of the suggestions from Q14 from ARHD thread. Updating the gps.config file as described (Q14:5) sorted it for me. I get a sat lock in seconds now.

Hi,
I am having trouble with GPS on my desire since installing gingervillain. On both versions 1.4 and 1.5 GPS just doesn't seem to be working at all. I've tried a factory reset from the recovery menu and have tried re-applying the zip file but with no luck. GPS is enabled but I don't even get an icon on the status bar at the top when it is supposed to be searching for a signal.
Thanks,
Chris
Reach for the skies
Go outside of your house. Point your phone to the sky. Your position should should showing on your GPS.
Or it could be the program itself? Try different gps using apps like maps, facebook places etc etc.
Also do post what radio you're currently using on your phone. It could help people diagnose your problem better.
Tried outside and using gpstest off the market with no luck. I don't usually have any problem with gps inside my house anyway. I don't even get an icon in the status bar at the top it's like it's not working at all. And before anyone says yes it is switched on! My current version is:
32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Any help would be much appreciated!

You must have the worlds strongest GPS in your desire. In normal ones, you need to be outside with the phone pretty much able to see the sky. On top of that, ideally it will need to be a clear sky.
Turn on GPS, open up Google Maps / your Navigation software (while outside). On my phone it only used to show the GPS icon in the task bar when a program was running that could use it.
Alternatively download GPS tools from the market (I forget the exact name).
If your GPS is indeed stuffed, take your phone back (if its under warrantee).
My GPS died on my phone. Completely. And before that it kept rebooting the phone. Had to take it back.

Hi
very interested in this thread as my GPS worked fine until I installed Gingervillain 1.4 last week and then updating to 1.5 on Friday
Radio : 32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14
I downgraded to GV 1.0 and my GPS was working ok again. I heard there was a known GPS problem fixed in GV 1.6 so I upgraded but the problem returned unfortunately. Any ideas?
Update the kernel with Villain set up, it cured my GPS problem.
GVChangelog:
Version 1.6:
* Fixed GPS problem (Thanks to CM Team)
+ kernel update defo works.

Hi,
Could you advise how I go about that? I thought the Kernel was updated as part of the gingervillain setup anyway?
Well I've had more fun with this! I just couldn't get GPS working on anything other than GV 1.0. I completely wiped my SD card and re-formatted the EXT3 partition. I then installed the stock RUU at which point GPS was predictably working. I then went through the flashing process of GV 1.6 and GPS was working this time. It was fine for a week or so but then the GPS stopped working again! I'm thinking it must be something to do with the dalvik cache now, that's the only reason I can think of for the GPS to stop working. I'm running out of patience with GV now so does anyone have suggestions for another stable 2.3 ROM I can move onto?
Thanks again,
Chris
like the thread title says i have this problem.. my google maps is always "searching for gps" in the Navigation function
few threads ago i was posted a problem with GPS STATUS or GPS TEST...
They were not finding any satellite...
later with the help of @superstick1 & @blbean i was fixed it... now these apk finds even 7 satellites!!!!(often LOL)
but Navigation continues without work.... some suggestion?
i was tested:
1-reinstall the apk. (not fixed my problem)
2-erase data caché OF THE APP only (not solved my problem)
3-fix gps sat. with gps status(not solved)but 5 satellites found...
4-use FASTERFIX.apk and then restart my machine (not solved)
EDIT: ufff! i´m desperate more tries:
5-flashed another recommened rom from coredroid thread: 12.28g.60.140f_26.05.05.27_M3 (orange uk)but its weird because i´m living in spain (orange es) (NOT SOLVED MY TROUBLE)
6-flashed another kernel: from leedroid 2.2.9 to my current BUZZ 1.3.8.3 1.2 GHZ MAX(NOT SOLVED)
I AM GRATEFUL FOR YOUR HELP BOYS (OR GIRLS )
Have you tried using a different rom and/or kernel?

Hi SERGI.3210
We meet again. Lol. I notice from my own experience that if we often reboot our phone, the GPS state will be restarted. And hence it will take some time for the GPS to work again.
For example, I have once flashed LeeDrOid' v2.2.2 in the past few months(first time), and I got a fix very quickly. It will be within 5-15 seconds? At most it will take is 30 seconds. However, after I reboot for whatever reason(I forgot, but I am not flashing anything else), and the GPS takes more time to get a fix again. The situation got worsen when I am in the car to get a fix. Took about 5-10 minutes??
But after some time, tolerating such slow fix(I know, its annoying) it suddenly get back to normal again. Which means I can get a fix very fast again.
Many has recommended the use of GPS Status app to clear A-GPS data and then download them back again. It works for them it seems, but in some to a large extent, it did not really work for me.
Maybe you can try Ulysee Gizmos app from the market? It has the capability to download A-GPS data as well. Recently I try using it and it seems to fix my problem once again. When was it? Last two days ago. Lol. Now it still work fine. Hopefully this continues.
I am still use GPS Status to get A-GPS data. Which means I am using both of them at the same time. Probably both apps does fires out some solutions? Haha. Me not sure but you can try.
Cheers mate. =)

-4-I believe that I will think of burning my DHD.. lolololololol
thank´s for you usefuls posts man..
see you soon here
EDIT: i tried to install another GPS NAVIGATOR (sygic) BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTS... i´m really sure that the problem its that my device finds gps when he wants And if it is clouded less still
I am fine here thanks. Getting ready for work now.
In your case, the problem is nothing to do with the navigation software but your GPS cannot get a fix. It may due to hardware failure.
If the situation persist, probably you should consider sending your device to HTC for a check. But make sure you turn back your phone into normal state first. (i.e. unroot your phone)
i pretty much have the same problem ...
5+ mins to lock my position ..
RcMixHD 5.5 and a changed radio... i will just burn it..

good night buddy!!!!
i have soo good noticesx100000000000
THAKE THIS:
gps status:found 8 or 9 sat.
fixed in 62 segs.
google maps:working perfectly!
finding gps at the moment
15 meters position error max. (better than my htc hero)
THE MEDICINE:
1--Though I feel sorry very much I had that flahs another CUSTOM ROM
2--Then I´VE flashed the recommended radio and was foun 3 or 4 sat...
3--and the most important: flash the RIL for this radio in this moment i was found 8 or 9 sat.!!!
the only one thing that i don´t like (nothing nothing) is the custom rom:
RCmix 6.1.0.1 (ported from desire s)
i´m COREDROID LOVER and RCMIX seems too simple but i preffer the good performance before beauty things...
Nevertheless when it does a few kilometres and tested well the GPS I will try with Leedroid (froyo) to see if I obtain the same results
Good for you buddy!
Usually if you got a fix pretty quick, it will have errors ranging to 30-50 meters(that is from what I obverse based on my device that locks within 5-15, max 30 seconds). Then it will adjust overtime. Well, still better than doesn't get a fix at all.
Hmm.. RCMis HD6.1.0.1? The Evolutionary Sense ROM? I have not try that yet.. plan to try after my exam. Currently concentrating on my exam for this month. Also quite satisfied with my current flashed LeeDrOid v2.2.3 ROM now. Lol.
Probably will be trying Miui too. I would prefer staying with Sense ROM as there is unlikely to have Premium Navigation in Non-sense ROM. If I would to try other GPS apps, I will have to pay for it. Premium Navigation is free for life for me in Malaysia + Singapore. Also finding addresses with it is easier, unlike other GPS app.(i.e. cannot search address). Probably due to the names of addresses here. Here uses Malay names and not English.

thake this gift for your help! (pressed your thanks button) you winned it
Okay, this seems just another common GPS problem with a DHD. But I find it intriguing.
It happens to me since I bought the phone, second hand.
I've already made the mod to the antena (soldered wire) and use the AGPS Patch and FasterFix to choose the server. Nothing solved it.
So, when the GPS works, it works really fine, no abnormal signal loss, not too much lag.
Note that it only works fine when I turn data ON, so it can download agps info.
There comes a day when I turn data on, go outside, turn Sygic on (or other gps program), and no satellites at all. GPS Status indicates the same.
I can go for more than 15 minutes without gps fix. It can go for longer, but I don't have the patience. I reset the AGPS info with GPS Status and download a fresh one and the problem remains.
If I restart the phone, 99% of the times, it solves the problem.
Now, I found out that a program called Quick Reboot (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...Glub3NvZnQuYW5kcm9pZC5RdWlja1JlYm9vdEZyZWUiXQ) avoids me having to restart the phone. Plus, GPS Doctor is quite efficient too.
So, I have to run Quick Reboot, then GPS Doctor, then Sygic or other Nav Program. Not very handy, if you're already driving...
Now, what on earth is this?
Hardware seems fine, because it doesn't fail, for example in a 300 km trip. If it gets a fix, it stays on nicely.
It sounds a software problem, deep in the OS itself.
I'm on Android 2.3.7, CM 7.2, but tested this on various CM based roms, ICS, rooted OEM ROM and it behaves the same.
If anyone can help... or share experiences... Any devs?
Thanks
I dont think it is going to get any better than that. I have the same experience as well with ICS ROMs. However, some ROM's dont do it so often.
i have same issue on default rooted rom wwe3.12.405.1.....
it may be problem with some specific models or all od dhd series
and its very random and happens on trips mostly
agps /wifi/mobile data nothing fixes it
restart fixs issue instantly ...
once after restart gps gets fixed it works perfectly ...
I have this exact same problem, and I'll try your tip for using the Quick Reboot app.
I'd also recommend the app AGPS Injector which enables you to start GPS based apps e.g. navigation etc. 'via' AGPS injector. It automatically downloads AGPS info before starting the navigation app. You can even create homescreen shortcuts for navigator apps which do it all with one click. Perfect!
I'm going to try combining this with a Quick Reboot using Tasker, again so that it does it all with just one click. I'll report back if it works.
Yep, automated steps would be great, like:
auto data on / agps injector / auto data off / run gps program
or even
Run Quick Reboot / quit Quick Reboot / auto data on / agps injector / auto data off / run gps program
:silly:
Just got a total GPS blackout an hour ago, and the combination Quick Reboot + AGPS injector (bought the full version) didn't worked for me, despite 5 or 6 atempts.
Then gave up and just went for a try with Quick Reboot + GPS Doctor and got it working without rebooting. :good:
Sounds like I need to try GPS Doctor. I've had good success with AGPS Injector. For me, I spent ages trying to find an app which gave the same results as using the AGPS reset and download in GPS Test, and that did it. Maybe there's some regional variation.
Do those apps just force a download of the links in the gps.conf file?
Have created setups using Tasker which I'll try tomorrow. Also found the app Fast Reboot which does a similar thing to Quick Reboot, so I'll compare the two.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda app-developers app
Yes, could be a regional variation.
Don't really know what the AGPS info download does.
I've used that Fast Reboot Pro program, but didn't do the trick for me.
Hi,
I have a strange issue with my Gnex.
I used to run CM11 nightlies on my device, but I noticed that the device loses GPS signal while navigating (using Waze for example) and then it takes like 3-4 more minutes (if at all) to recover the signal.
So to test it, I flashed stock back (rom, recovery, kernel).
but I still have this issue. I cannot navigate 5 minutes straight without losing the GPS signal.
I tried to run GPSFix, but it didn't really help.
Any idea/suggestions what can I do?
thanks guys!

Is your device activated on a cell network? Gnex by default has assisted gps, so it needs a data connection to establish a fix. What you describe could happen as you leave Wi-Fi, have no signal, and it takes 3-4 minutes to grab the gps ephemeris data from satellites. Just a guess.
If this isn't your problem, have you tried using GPS status and toolbox app to Resetand redownload agps data?

Hey, thx for the reply.
Yes, I have a 3G connection and WIFI turned off.
I tried the toolbox, used it to reset data etc - but it didn't help
Well, the only way to truly know would be to flash a stock image and see if that works. If it doesn't, then you have a hardware problem.
Give GPS Test a go (search on Play store, I can't put external links here, it's the one from Chartcross Limited). It helped me a lot some time ago when I had your same problem.
